Politico runs a beat sweetener on Mike Ross today, positing him as a bravely bold centrist under fire from the liberals and conservatives (so he must be just right!), with an EXTREMELY buried lede. At the tail end of the article comes this nugget:
Whether or not any of the mud has stuck to him, Ross isn’t taking any chances back home.
Ross, who got his start in politics as a personal driver for Bill Clinton during Clinton’s 1982 Arkansas gubernatorial campaign, will bring his old friend and former boss to his campaign kickoff in the town of Hope.
OK, this says “campaign kickoff.” I don’t know if that means a fundraiser, a public event, or what, but regardless of the mechanism, this is a Bill Clinton endorsement of Mike Ross. The guy who has been out front among the Blue Dogs in opposing a public option and supporting worthless co-ops.
At Netroots Nation, Bill Clinton asked progressives to settle for whatever bill that can get out of Congress. Apparently that means settling for whatever Mike Ross wants.
I’m trying to get confirmation from Pres. Clinton’s office on what this “campaign kickoff” is all about.
UPDATE: Right from Ross’ campaign site:
Join President Bill Clinton and me in Hot Springs on October 17th!
I am sure you’ve seen the attacks on me in the past few weeks by powerful special interest groups questioning my character and running negative TV ads against me.
I need your help now more than ever before. I am kicking off my re-election campaign Saturday, October 17th, 2009 at 5 pm at Horner Hall at the Hot Springs Convention Center. My good friend, President Bill Clinton, will be the special guest. Tickets are $100 or whatever you can afford. Please come and invite your friends. It is important to show that we will not back down and not give in to those trying to destroy me.
I can’t do this alone. Your contribution to my campaign committee will help me respond to the special interests’ attack ads that are up on TV now, and are likely to continue through November 2010.
So, it’s a fundraiser, that’s confirmed. Nice to see Ross playing the martyrdom role, too.
…as for this proposal from Ross to open up Medicare to people under 65, first of all he disowns the proposal the moment he mentions it, and second, he would only consider it if Medicare rates were increased so much it would bankrupt the government. Not a serious plan at all.

Can’t hurt to ask Ross’s office, to. Might be interesting to compare the responses…
NOOOO!
Keith Olbermann has publicly appealed to Pres Clinton to help find a Little Rock venue for the Arkansas free health clinic. Sometimes I wonder if wealth hasn’t gone to Bill’s head.
This NewsDesk thingy is sweet.
Mike Ross as minion to Bill Clinton… it ‘splains a lot.
When will Bill start raising money for Sestak?
somewhere Lane Hudson is smiling
and just because there isn’t the hometown connection, do not be surprised to see him fundraising for Blanche Lincoln – it’s what they do
Updated – unhelpful, Slick, to the cause.
If Bill Clinton is raising money for Ross, what is Clinton getting in return?
Having Ross somewhat independent of corporate money could be an attitude adjuster for Ross.
Balloon Boy is safe
Bill always was a Bluedog-ask any gay.
And that Pfffttt you are hearing is the dreams of the media to milk the story for the next week as the newest shiny object of distraction.
Ross and Clinton?
Wow… the Big Dog has turned into a lap-poodle. Sad.
Ark. Lt. Gov. Bill Halter has helped secure the Statehouse Convention center in Little Rock for K.O.’s free health clinic.
And Ross set up this fundraiser with Clinton (in Hot Springs) days after FDL announced their ad would air.
“I am sure you’ve seen the attacks on me in the past few weeks by powerful special interest groups questioning my character and running negative TV ads against me.”
Would these be the Communist-Fascist-Socialist-Librul-Outside Agitators I’ve heard so much about? Obviously, they’re takin’ over.
“Powerful special interest groups?” You bet, Mikey.
Is that a joke? He and Hillary are the ultimate and leading originators of the DLC/Blew Dog groups. This is why it was so important to keep a Clinton out of the WH again, which we did thankfully.
But I read a few threads down that you are a troll if you say bad things about Clinton…like maybe the Ds and Rs (and “moderates”) are hard (not impossible in many cases, but hard) to tell apart.
Bah, lets give it more time and see what happens, then we may be allowed to speak our mind.
“At Netroots Nation, Bill Clinton asked progressives to settle for whatever bill that can get out of Congress.” ; hopefully someone told Clinton to go fuck himself.
This sux.
WTF is up with Bill?
Maybe he’s really the asshole narcissist I was hoping he wasn’t.
Never met ‘im but I’ll certainly relay that message if I ever get the chance.
A young Mike Ross was once Gov. Clinton’s driver.
“Safe” is relative. *g*
I don’t imagine mom and dad are real happy with the lad. I am glad that he’s safe though.
That surely must be his only qualification. He doesn’t have any others.
Bashing the Clintons for the sake of bashing them is one thing. Discussing Pres Clinton’s actions, e.g., pushing and signing NAFTA, DADT, is another.
Comment numbers are 1 off in the “in response to [...] @ [..].”
I smells a rat.
Hopefully, you can follow-up after the fundraiser. Who attended. How much money was raised. The volume of tears stirred by his martyrdom.
what the heck is this all about?
Ross bringing up Medicare for all??????
OK .. I tried watching Tweety.. it lasted about 6 seconds before i found myself scrambling for the remote.
The end of the article sums it up.. he’s talking about something he doesn’t actually support. It’s all kabuki spin.
It says so much, doesn’t it, that Bill Clinton was asked to speak at Netroots Nation? What were they thinking? Mike Ross is a corporatist stooge and Bill was a corporatist President. What is surprising is that anyone would be surprised at the two getting together. The same way that in retrospect none of us should have been surprised at Obama taking Lieberman back into the Democratic Senate Caucus so easily. We need to ditch the rose colored glasses of our expectations and accept that all of these guys get on so well together because they are, in fact, all the same.
6 seconds is about all it takes on cable for someone to say something incredibly stupid or wrong.
You know, the more we know about the Clinton’s, the less they leave behind as a positive legacy. I expect soon it will be down to nothing.
Too bad Mr. President. With this you have voted to kill us, go to hell.
And the crux of Bill’s message at NRN… pass anything and call it victory.
I could not agree more about the legacy part. I can not remember a President blowing through what positive legacy he had so quickly or reminding us of his negatives so much.
I see what you’re saying.
It seems to me that we are at a point where several things have become apparent. The first is that the netroots progressive community is in broad agreement as to why the PO is an essential element of HCR. The second equally important is that as a group it has been influential in having the PO advanced to the point of near acceptance.
I think it is time to take the next logical step which is to assure its passage by exerting the only influence that counts, namely financially influencing the outcome. A concerted well planned effort should be undertaken to finance alternative candidates to unseat present democrats who are opposed to the PO, this is a sufficient reason to unseat them.
Acting in reasonable unison contributions of $25 to $50 a piece assuming 400,000 like minded progressives give or take, the influence on who becomes elected would be determinative.
At this stage, the number of candidates that need to be influenced have fortunately reduced to a manageable few. Such as Lieberman, Landrieu, Lincoln, Nelson and maybe Bayh. The need to take this step has become clear because all that has been gained by sheer of effort has not been enough to detrmine the outcome. Having come this close, the opportunity should not be lost.
The fact that a galvinized electorate can influence the adoption of popular measures is a message that will shake the very foundation of the current system that is so detrimental to the public good.
He endorsed Gavin Newsome for governor of CA. (Newsome is, IIRC, trailing Jerry Brown. If he thinks this will help, he may be in for a really big surprise.)
Yes. It was satirical.
Good Grief! Bill Clinton was always a turd. The only thing I liked about him was that he drove Republicans crazy.
