Welcome to FDL News Desk, our foray into newsgathering here at Firedoglake.
I’m David Dayen, your cub reporter for this enterprise. You may know my work from my own site D-Day, as well as the California progressive blog Calitics and my time as sidekick on Digby’s Hullabaloo.
At FDL News Desk, we’re going to dig into the day’s top stories and overturn as many rocks as possible. Obviously, the health care debate is predominant in Washington, but there are lots of other important stories, from climate change to financial reform to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the never-ending cycle of elections. So there should be enough to keep busy.

My dad, who had a Neiman Fellowship, was press secretary to Pat Brown and was editorial page editor of the LATimes during its one sort of liberal phase, was most proud of something he did as a cub reporter for the SF Chron.
He was truly a cub, working the police beat, when he interviewed a man in jail for some crime committed in Chinatown. AS he listened to the guy he thought hmmmm something doesn’t sound right. Long story short, he convinced cops they had the wrong guy and steered them to the right guy.
May you have a great cub year. We, too, are dday fans.
