We keep threading the needle when single payer solves the problem. Everybody in, nobody out. Kids,their parents, veterans, unemployed, sick, well, smart, dumb. Band of brothers and sisters. The French got it right when they said, “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity (and Sorority). It is a three legged stool, that will not stand when two legs are stunted. We have sacrificed equality and fraternity for the almighty Liberty.

Here’s the problem currently:

As I understand how SCHIP works, states and the federal government both contribute to a program for children whose families don’t qualify for Medicaid but who cannot afford insurance on their own, allowing them to purchase affordable state-run plans.

There are great discrepancies in the willingness of states to fund SCHIP plans. And the current budget crises in states mean that the program is held hostage to the budget balancing absolute amendments in state constitutions.

Folding it into the exchange when the exchanges are fully functional and the subsidies are in place for folks with the very incomes that qualify for SCHIP now means that states will be out of the picture and families will not be stigmatized for being in a “government program”, a fact of life in some very poor but proud parts of the country. That will mean that more children very well might be covered. I think that Dingell and Rockefeller can find common ground on this that will improve the conference bill. Figuring out what safeguards are needed will be important. And phasing the folding in later instead of sooner will isolate the changes from the current political controversy over healthcare.

No, not necessarily. The insurers strategy is to load up the exchanges with those who NEED AND USE health services, ie; the poor, elderly, children and the sick.

That will burden the fed program, and eliminate spending on care in the private insurers, to increase their profits and help destroy the fed program.

THAT is a corporate gateway to eliminate ALL entitlements, to privatize all entitlements.

We should NOT fall for shit legislation, and so far, HR 3296 IS shit legislation!

Interesting piece right now on Countdown on Michelle’s Little Press Conference on Health Care Reform. Funny when John Boehner holds up his copy of the Constitution and then refers to it’s preamble and recites the Declaration of Independence. If you watched, note Ms. Bachman mouthing the words along with him. Neither of them know? You can’t make this stuff up.

SCHIP is better for kids because the exchanges are not ready from prime time–they are going to fall far short of what’s promised.
As a political matter, with the Academy of Pediatrics and Jay Rockefeller determined to maintain SCHIP as a separate program there is no way in the world it will be eliminated. Yay for Jay!
