Nancy Pelosi failed to commit today in her weekly press conference to whether language from Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-IN) would be included in the health care bill set for a vote on Saturday. “(Ellsworth’s) work has been very important, and we haven’t made any decisions about amendment,” said Pelosi, who added that Ellsworth and other “pro-life” Democrats do want to see health care reform pass.
The Ellsworth Amendment would make explicit language prohibiting “federal funds for abortion” and ensure access to insurance plans that do not cover reproductive choice services, but really wouldn’t change current law to any degree, certainly not to the extent of radical language sought by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) which would effectively ban abortion coverage in the individual and small group health care market.
Pelosi vowed at her news conference that she will have the votes to pass. While some Blue Dogs, like Gene Taylor, haven’t been lobbied and are strong no votes, Ellsworth said yesterday that his language would bring along “three or four” conservative Democrats who had been hedging on the bill. Adding them to the two new members of Congress set to be sworn in today, both of them health care reform supporters, Pelosi is probably correct that she has the 218 necessary for passage.
But the White House is taking no chances. President Obama will visit Capitol Hill tomorrow to round up votes for reform.
The House Rules Committee will meet at 2:00pm ET tomorrow to finalize the language on the bill.
