A letter from Rep. Diana DeGette to Nancy Pelosi will vow to vote against any health care bill that includes the anti-choice Stupak amendment. I guess that’s a “going forward” letter, since DeGette and everyone likely to sign it have already voted for a bill with Stupak’s language in it. It’s considerably harder to make this threat now, but they’re making a go of it. And they claim to have the votes, with 41 signatories so far.

As Members of Congress we believe that women should have access to a full range of reproductive health care. Health care reform must not be misused as an opportunity to restrict women’s access to reproductive health services.

The Stupak-Pitts amendment to H.R. 3962, The Affordable Healthcare for America Act, represents an unprecedented and unacceptable restriction on women’s ability to access the full range of reproductive health services to which they are lawfully entitled. We will not vote for a conference report that contains language that restricts women’s right to choose any further than current law.

The letter will be released today, with the full list of signatories.

Earlier, the Pro-Choice Caucus in the House signed off on Rep. Brad Ellsworth’s compromise language, which could be a fallback in negotiations between the House and Senate in any presumed conference committee.

Meanwhile, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a member of the House leadership, said today on MSNBC that she is confident that the Stupak language will be stripped from the bill after the conference committee.
