Arkansas Times reporter/blogger Max Brantley has a great write-up on Blanche Lincoln and her troubles in Arkansas. As a trusted local source, Brantley has more credibility on Lincoln than any of the national wags trying to claim that she is only “voting her state” by threatening to block health care reform. Tell that to the guy from Arkansas. Brantley says that Lincoln’s politics have moderated over time, and that she’s threatening her political career with her role in the health care debate:
The hard-core Republican base voter is motivated almost to the point of violence. There’ll be no presidential race in 2010 to swell turnout. A Democratic campaign operative in the Delta — his work is turning out black voters — told me that people with solid reasons to support Lincoln, including legislative favors, just don’t seem to care about her fate [...] The Lincoln campaign seems more obsessed with money than people, apparently thinking that a huge treasury alone will guarantee success. They are wrong. Whoever wins the Republican nomination will have ample money, in either direct or indirect support, to get out a message.
She was combative with reporters Saturday in announcing her deciding vote to allow debate to begin on health legislation. She said she’s doing what she thinks best for Arkansas voters, not serving a special interest. Even if she’s sincere, her position is harder to articulate and still boils down to protecting private insurance companies from competition..
I still can’t believe that, in the fullness of time, more Americans wouldn’t appreciate a successful effort to provide more people with health coverage and more protection from the cruel whims of insurance companies. But time is short for 2010 candidates.
Brantley seems to believe that Democratic fortunes in Arkansas could be tied to Lt. Governor Bill Halter, who he believes could beat Lincoln in a primary, especially if she votes against the interests of her constituents on health care:
Perhaps Lt. Gov. Bill Halter will test my theory. The Father of the Arkansas Lottery and the recent champion of a successful free health clinic for a thousand of the state’s needy, Halter will never be more popular. In the Second District, where barely a quarter of Democrats are happy with Lincoln, the dissatisfaction is not because she’s too liberal.
Halter, should he jump in the race, could win a Democratic primary that will have few other contests of note and an incumbent with a tepid base. Moreover, given his pluses and given the fact that he would have no Senate record to pick apart, he might be able to win the whole thing. You’d think that prospect might count for something in Lincoln’s further health ditherations.
In 2006, Colin McEnroe became the traditional media source with the most perceptive take in Connecticut during the Lamont/Lieberman primary. Max Brantley could be that source in 2010, especially if Halter takes the plunge and challenges Blanche Lincoln.

Maybe Blanche DuBois Lincoln will take her well earned income from Phama/Health Care handouts and retire to Tara. Different books but what the hell.
you do know of course that she is often referred to as Plantation Blanche, right ?
Well fiddle-dee-dee! She’d be right at home with the Plantation Party. Time enough to consider a Lieberman.
OT:
“Stock markets, bond markets, credit default swap markets, currency exchanges, and even gold and oil have all taken a beating in the past two days as investors realize the world doesn’t work the way they thought. There still are unexpected default risks out there even in unlikely places, and the deflation rippling through property markets worldwide has not abated. Those who lent to Dubai – including some of the biggest banks in the world, who are already severely stressed by bad debts – are going to lose billions of dollars even if Dubai merely postpones interest payments for six months as requested. Many investors now expect much worse than that, though.
So here we have a country that used to have oil which has now run out of the same. It has turned to massive amounts of debt to sustain not only its existing lifestyle, but to build a fantasy land of McMansions, luxury malls, trophy office buildings and theme parks for the wealthy. It has nothing anyone wants to buy and consequently stocks the shelves of its stores with goods from other countries it buys on debt. It has done all this using impoverished labor that works under a modern form of indentured servitude, in which the typical worker incurs excessive debts of their own that can never truly be paid off by their earnings. It creates an enormous income disparity between its privileged few and the huddled masses kept out of sight.
Sound familiar? When do you think global investors will start connecting these dots and ask: exactly what is backing the debt of the United States that has flooded the markets in the past nine years under Bush and Obama? At least Dubai had a presumed rich uncle in Abu Dhabi that would come to the rescue, even though now everyone realizes that was a very costly mistaken assumption. In the case of the US, the United States was the rich uncle everybody else looked to in order to solve global problems. Now that rich uncle has gone crazy in its own orgy of gambling, whoring, and over-indebtedness.”
But inquiring Villagers want to know: will Halter destroy the Democratic Party for generations,
the way Ned Lamont did?
Oh please, pretty please a primary opponent for lackey Lincoln and her insurance company masters!
FU Lincoln, trying to screw the rest of us out of healthcare.
linky?
Blanche is one Lincoln we can do without. I’d follow that primary and
support an opponent.
OT. Thank you to the people behind the scenes at FDL who got me back
online last night.
Primary her away. Put her under some much-needed pressure to shift leftward. Be the Sestak to her Specter. Do it, do it, do it!
As Alan Grayson said: You don’t beat Republicans by trying to be like them.
Bush/Cheney had a full eight years in office. Obama has been in office for less than one. There are many Bush family connections to Dubai. Seems wrong to include Obama at this point, but that does lessen the focus on the Bushes, if that was the intent.
Paul Wellstone, one of the greatest liberals of our generation, was loved in Minnesota because he stood strongly for things, he didn’t beat around the bush like Lincoln does.
Yet another Rhodes Scholar from Arkansas named Bill… Sounds like he would be a big improvement on Lincoln. From Halter’s wiki bio:
I’m loving this guy more and more.
Even if she shifted leftward for the health care issue, I doubt that we can ever trust her again – if we ever did.
Yep, I hope he decides to throw his hat in the ring.
well if he does, he will be bucking AR Dem Machine – including the Clintons – remember how pissy Bill got about Olbermann and “politicizing” healthcare
I take some hope in his jumping out of one race and jumping in to the one for Lt Gov – above my paygrade to know whether he was being pragmatic or opportunistic, but it does show the ability to read a situation and adjust accordingly
I don’t know how much influence the Clintons have left in Arkansas (some, undoubtedly). Pretty clear that Bill at least supports Blanche.
would love to hear Max Brantley’s take on the Clinton’s current level of influence – unfortunately, I am kept out of his comments due to a technical glitch
let us also remember Jane’s post the other day about HCAN’s big fat thank you to Blanche – he will clearly be bucking Party Mandarins
Cool! He sounded (and looked!) really good on Olberman when he was discussing the health clinic.
Primary Blanche!
Perhaps we could get together a “promise to donate list” for the Lt. Gov if he decides to run. No doubt the power structure has already warned him not to so but if he knows there are other $’s out there he can depend on then then he may take the plunge.
I learned while I was in Little Rock last week, that she’s known as Plantation Blanche, by many of her constituents.
I would say Halter may not have enough name recognition at this point here in the state, but all the coverage he has has been positive. He championed the popular lottery both as a state legislator and especially at Lt. Governor, and embraced the free clinic while the state Party ran it down. Wealthy Northwest Arkansas (land of the Waltons and Tysons) will go GOP, leaving the rest of the state and it’s uninsured open for a Democratic challenger.
If the Senator from Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield helps in killing healthcare, I’d say Halter would be ahead by default.
All these dumb dems like Lincoln trying to please Repuks in their state who won’t for them anyway
I think “we’ are making a mistake by letting Plantation Blanche off the hook so easily if she votes for this awful bill. There are many more reasons to call her out… and replace her.
With apologies to mr bard…A Republican supporter by any other affiliation stinks as bad. If Ms Lincoln is in the seat what good is having a democratic party in the Natural State, anyway.
Let’s not forget the Clintons’ “helpfulness” in the Lamont-Lieberman fiasco.
Clinton has not “aged” well.
Brantley would envision only one of his own ilk as an able substitute for Lincoln now that black smoke is trailing behind her downward trajectory following her Landrieu-wannabe play on the debate vote.
Clearly healthcare and all of us little people are the secondary (if not tertiary) objectives to politicians; its all about the “play”. Any bill excreted by those chambers wouldn’t pass the stink test if examined closely.
The fact that the senate can produce 2000 pages and put it up to a vote with less than 48 hours to peruse tells me there are many hands in this pie that are submitting pieces of their own interest with gratuity to the senator who introduces the amending of the bill in question. Proof of this is any public observation of this group of individuals.
Sen. Byrd, by example, couldn’t do anything but dampen a seating surface by himself. He is a puppet to the majority leadership propped up in appropriate attire by aides. Like Weekend at Bernie’s.
