In this case it seems that rebut is the right word, since McCain didn’t simply deny Durbin’s accusation, he attempted to disprove it.

“Rebut means to argue to the contrary: “He rebutted his opponent’s statement.” Refute connotes success in argument and almost always implies an editorial judgment. Instead, use [the words] deny, dispute rebut or respond to.” AP Stylebook

It continues to boggle the mind how from day-to-day these lame rethuglicans can’t remember what they said in the last 24 hours. What does their staffs do all day – just beat off all the time?? My friends, since I see it a couple of times in this thread I feel it is a good time for a friendly reminder that the correct grammar is DemocratIC Party. Even my friend William F. Buckley refused to play Lush Limpbaugh’s, Bill O’Loofah’s, and basically every single modern-day Repub’s silly little reindeer game of “Democrat Party.”
