I’m surprised this hasn’t gotten more attention.
But Nelson decided later Thursday to hold off after Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah, said he thought that the measure was being rushed to the floor. Hatch had expected to be the lead sponsor of the amendment, and he said he thought it was “discourteous” that Nelson was preparing — apparently at the behest of his leadership — to call up the amendment without Hatch’s consent.
Nelson said that the amendment’s language was not finished, and that groups opposed to abortion — notably the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops — needed more time to review it. Additional time, he added, might lead to greater bipartisan support.
Separation of church and state, baby.

So when does a fetus have Human Rights protection?
When it’s no longer a fetus but an actual baby able to live outside the womb All it really is before that point is a parasite.
And, uh, how much extra time have groups opposed to forbidding/restricting abortion had to review the language?
Oh, heck, I know the answer to that.
Bishops. Reviewing.legislation.
Jefferson, Washington, Hamilton, Madison, etc., etc. rolling over and over in their graves.
When, oh when, will the god of abraham be resigned to the dustbin of history?
Somebody wanna tell that scumbag Nelson that according to my constitution
“…no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States. “
When it stops being a fetus & becomes a Human.
Oh, BTW — Fuck you.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t apply to legislation. /s
It applies to Senators and The Public Trust, so —
Why is Nelson submitting His Vote to a religious Test.
Why do the bishops have any say in legislation?
They’re not part of Congress (and shouldn’t be, either, as long as they think their views are more important than those of the other 300 million people in the country), and they certainly aren’t any part of government.
Someone needs to ask Nelson about that. In front of video cameras, preferably live.
If Nelson thinks some religious higharchy needs to vet the legislation, why not more denominations wieghing in on it too?
Don’t the Baptists, Jews, Methodists not count in Nelson’s mind.
Seems like Nelson has allowed Catholics become the state religion by default.
It is just rediculous that Nelson hasn’t been booed out of the chamber for this stupidity and lack of Constitutional prudence.
Oh wait that state religion thingy might also be defaulted to the secret C Street gang too. Nothing like suprimicists gaining advantage over the Constitution. I hear they are going to ground now, after their cover was slightly blown.
Why don’t we just charge Ben Nelson for being an agent of a foreign government? (The Vatican)
At this point, like all lobyists of a minor viewpoint, the Catholic church should be taxed.
