Speaking with Neil Cavuto on the Fox Business Channel tonight, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) stated flatly that he would not vote for the health care bill moving through the Senate.
I’m struggling with this. As of this point, I’m not voting for the bill. … I’m going to do my best to make this bill a better bill, a bill that I can vote for, but I’ve indicated both to the White House and the Democratic leadership that my vote is not secure at this point. And here is the reason. When the public option was withdrawn, because of Lieberman’s action, what I worry about is how do you control escalating health care costs?
Crucially, Sanders said he’s not voting “for the bill.” That is not necessarily a vote against cloture. There’s an opportunity for him to vote for cloture and against the bill and still be technically correct about his intentions. For conservative Democrats, procedural votes and up or down votes on the bill became one and the same, leading to the hostage-taking process. Perhaps Sanders is still trying to extract more goodies from the bill, maybe even in the area of community health centers.
Prior to this statement, Sanders has said he was undecided on the bill, and signaled that he thought the reconciliation process would have been a better use of the Senate’s time:
“If I had my druthers, I think reconciliation is an absolutely appropriate way to go,” he said. “I think what people who oppose that will tell you is that you can’t have the kind of comprehensive legislation that the Senate is trying to deal with now—and that may in fact be true—but there are a heck of a lot of things that you can do that would strengthen our health care system in a cost-effective way that could be a giant step forward for the American people.”
Other Senators, like Russ Feingold, have remained undecided, but Sanders is the first of the more liberal Senate Democrats to go as far as saying they would not vote for the bill.
Some conservative Democrats also remain undecided, like Ben Nelson, who is reportedly “weighing” whether or not to support new language on abortion services penned by Bob Casey.

Hold the line Bernie. I’m with you!
At least get rid of the mandate, then Obama can have his “victory”.
{{Sanders}}
more like breaking snooze
Imagine what it would have been like if Sanders said he would vote for it.
If he would only vote no on cloture, he would probably get the reconciliation he wants.
BTW, here is a question for those who know more abt Senate rules. There was a bill which survived the initial cloture vote. What happens to that bill? Would Reid have to introduce a new bill that will go through through two new cloture votes?
Bernie! Bernie! Bernie!
Forget not voting for the Bill we need Senators with the Stones to Filibuster the bill like Joe threatened too!
If Joe one Senator got everything he wanted with a threat of a filibuster imagine what 2 or 3 senators can get if they threaten to filibuster!
That’s what I’m talkin bout!
Can you blame him with what the Bill has become (or not become)?
Keith Olbermann to make Special Comment!!!!
Another bit of negotiating skill that progressives haven’t picked up yet – he who can stop a thing controls that thing. If there are even a few progressives who are willing to stand up for a good bill, then Obama and Reid will have to rethink their strategy.
Good on you Bernie.
Before someone brings it out on me, I did in fact write this diary today
http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/19274
I retracted it in a later comment when I learned about this. The same comment posts my reasoning of why I said it at the time.
Big enough to admit when I’m wrong, Bernie just proved me wrong.
Thank you for giving to hardened of a Cynic a glimmer.
WOW we do win sometimes.
jo6pac
Yea, a socialist acts like a socialist. Meanwhile none of the rest of these clowns are now, and never will be, socialists.
harry reid and rahm, lips firmly planted on each of lieberman’s butt cheeks, try to twist bernie’s arm.
Kill the Bill Baby Kill the Bill!@!
what a fucking disaster this has all turned into! We are being betrayed by the BO administration. This is a give away to big Money who are heavily invested in the Health Care Industry… We are LOST!@!
I am not now, nor have I ever been a Democrat.
If that isn’t 11-dimensional chess I don’t know what is.
I don’t take anything for granted including Sanders’s “socialism.”
During the McCarthy days there was a comedy routine about beards that had this in it:
“Lenin had a beard. Gabby Hayes has whiskers.”
I knew it was too good to be true that we agreed.
I’m with Bernie Sanders also. I don’t think we need a bill that mandates people to pay these leeches in the insurance companies!! We need to abolish these insurance companies and go with a not-for-profit agency overseen by the government LIKE MEDICARE !!!! To hell with these executives and their big payouts !! Why should we give any money to them anymore…THEY’RE THE MIDDLEMAN RAPING US !!!!
My gramps used to say my hippie buddies and I that played softball looked like the House of David.
Probably the closest facsimile you’re likely to find in the U.S. Senate in this era when any stance which does not serve corporate interests is defined as the EXTREME left.
Kismet.
AND A NEGOTIATOR FOR THE INSURANCE COMPANIES SAID…WE WIN !!!! HE WHO LAUGHS LAST, LAUGHS BEST !!!!
And of course we had Lennon and Marx
relax with the caps pal
Again, during the McCarthy days the CW was that only 2 kinds of people wore beards – Beatniks and, as J Edgar pronounced it, commonists.
Facial hair and commonists really got his knickers in a twist.
LOL
Didn’t do much for Harvey Shirley either.
Dude had some real demons inside.
Maybe there are no real Progressives?
He preferred clean shaven men in suits?
Champaign police chief, right? My dad wasn’t a big fan of the “longhairs” either. Not back then anyway. He mellowed considerably after retiring from the force.
KO
Indubitably, although I’ve never heard any suggestion that he wasn’t monogamous.
You got it. Did you know George the cop who got his jaw broken by a guy who hit him with a frozen chicken? It’s funny how much tension there was in the early 70′s and then we all got to know each other on the street and at Parkland and things cooled off.
of mice and men
Urbana cop? I didn’t know many Champaign cops. Was his last name Hendricks?
i love him
Thank God. Maybe he’ll vote against cloture too.
I may join his party and leave the Democrats.
“the cartel”
Can someone ‘splain to me why forcing poor people to buy medical insurance is “socialism”?
I think he was CPD, we got to know him when he worked campustown and would come in the Leather Shop when it was on Green.
Not “cartel”; “mafia”.
quoting KO…and my 2cts……..mafia takes care of widows and children
best KO yet
I know that you were quoting KO. I’m suggesting that mafia is a better word than cartel because the customers of the medical industry are vulnerable. Heh. KO’s getting there, just called them mobsters.
Hope you washed your hands after launching that bird. Seriously though, that must have sucked. Poor guy probably took a lot of ribbing from his colleagues too.
Time to eat. Down the road…
mafia is more honorable imo………g
peas bro
KO calling for resistence to law. Good.
KO will not buy…………………..
Um… The gummint is making us all do the same thing… SHUT UP, THAT’S WHY… Wolverines!!!111!!! /wingnut
That gave me a headache. I need another beer…
They only protect their own. Kill all the others. Just like medical insurance corps.
Maybe something harder to drink would be more appropriate.
i thought they werent so good to their employees
Oooh… I do have a bottle of Woodford Reserve that I can hear whispering to me. I like the way you think!
oy this country is so fukkkkkkkkkkkkkked
Depends on how you define “your own.”
To Whom It May Concern:
I am disgusted with the American congress! This country is broke, our infrastructure is in shambles, our banks are reaping billions of tax payer money and now, NOW we are held hostage to the health insurance companies. We were promised by Senator Obama during his campaign that we would have change. I thought he meant change for the good of our country, but what he must have meant was that he would leave us a little change in our pockets after he was done with us! He has helped the banks, the insurance companies and the military industrial complex but not the people who truly need a voice; that would be the rest of the 90% of the American people. I know that big business is important to our country and that they employ millions of people, but if they keep sending our good jobs overseas for slave labor and business are enslaving American people by making them pay for broken banks, pharmaceutics and insurance companies and sending our young people overseas to fight in shameful wars, there is no way this country can maintain a healthy standard of living except for the top 1%. It amazes me that the congress and president Obama so blatantly help big business when the democrats promised to help the middle class and people in need especially with health care. We the people need to have a stop gap if we feel that we are not being represented . We the people need a vote of some kind to override the horrible damage this congress and other congresses in the past, that have lied to us over and over, to fix the wrongs and make them right. We the people need to have some way to speak out, like a federal referendum, when the majority who put people in office, are not being represented. We need this option NOW even if it needs to go all the way to the Supreme Court to take back our country and begin a new age of democracy.
Well, if you consume that tonight, you might have to buy another bottle to drown greater sorrows later. Just sayin’.
etu Brute!
Woodford Reserve is sippin’ whiskey, and tomorrow’s a work day. Plus, I have a good sized bottle of sake in reserve for when things get REALLY bad. (I never get a hangover from sake… Love the stuff!)
Plenty of “Brute”ishness to go around.
I don’t like saki and have a bottle that I brought back from Japan in 1994. I’d be privliged to contribute it to you at the appropriate moment, assuming it’s still OK.
human beings in this country ,are gene damaged……..
Oh, my! You know the address…! What should we decide on as the “trigger?” The loss of both majorities in 2010 or the loss of the White House in 2012 due to catastrophic mismanagement?
gaw………id love to expatriate
i just yearn for a quiet place in Europe
KO’s comment was freakin epic.
Someone youtube that ASAP so I can link it everywhere
Seems like Christmas might be a good enough excuse. Might not get it in the mail until after New Years though.
Be careful with that.
The reason I stay in the US is for one reason and one reason only. The first Amendment. No other country in the world has something similar. Granted we’re not doing so hot with it right now either, but that is my fight.
I’m a first amendment absolutist.
Lovely! My birthday is in January, so that will work out splendidly! Thanks.
I submit to you that wealthy people getting wealthier actually is progressive……
Right you are. I was very close to going to live in Toronto years ago, but there was that 1st Amendment thing, plus all the rest of that lovely Constitution and Bill of Rights stuff… Stayed here, despite loving the hell out of Toronto and having a nice job all lined up.
Wonderful. A positive sum game!
Obama said that the economy will crash if this bill does not pass. More blackmail. He has taken his cue from the banksters. What does he think paying between 17% and 22% of your income will do to the average family? economic crash.
me too
tru dat
his mom is whirling like a dervish in her grave
I’m tottering on the edge of 64 in January. One more year and I can retire. HAHAHAHAHA! God, sometimes I crack myself up…
this isn’t a win. i’m quite sad to hear this. how many people will die this year now because we are a bunch of whiners and don’t get everything we want ASAP? how many of those with pre-existing conditions will be denied care? how many of the unemployed will not have adequate health care?
i am not happy about this.
and it’ll crash worse in a few years if it does…. since there’s virtually no cost management in this bill. We’re not idiots, Mr. President. You said in your speech to Congress that cost growth mgmt is at the crux of the matter and you were right. Now your minion in CT has just gutted the last vestige of cost mgmt from the bill.
So in the long run fewer people will be insured due to affordability, those that are will pay more, and the higher costs will accelerate the system’s imminent failure.
At this point, losing the mandate is not enough for me.
I want recissions, pre-existings OFF the table, and fully banned.
I want caps on lifetime and individual OFf the table and fully banned!
I want that regulatory piece that I forget the name of and what it does, ON the table!
I want a lot.
Losing the mandate is not enough. We can get more.
And later in the process, NO Eshoo and NO Stupak!!!
This shit’s not over. Feet to fire, press them all!
Smells a bit like kabuki, given all we’ve seen come down, don’t it . . . *G*
Someone elsewhere today suggested he’s a Dem Socialist, which is NOT the good old fashioned all in for the people socialists of the 20′s/30′s.
He’s a corporatist socialist, I’d suggest . . .
this statement should be used to hound him out of office, amongst many others.
Bada BING!
I want insurance companies out of the picture.
We don’t have a 60 vote majority. We have one bleeping Senator.
House Of David could NEVER beat THESE GUYS!
*G*
But yeah, I liked the beards!
So did womens clothing!
He drew the wrong lessons from his mother’s experience of the system.
The narcissist that he is decided that he would personally financially rise above the financial conditions that so disadvantaged his mother.
Instead he failed to act as an empath, or a humanist or just a decent human being.
That is a false honor among that pack of shit tribe that kills so easily and quickly. Thieves, killers, pure evil. They have no honor, it’s a myth from the movies you are meming.
KO lit a petard under the Obama Administration’s ass, with his special comment.
What makes you think ANYthing the Senate has up for grabs at this point will do ANY of the things you say? Only those who are sick now, and can PAY HIGHER PRICES, will see any coverage, and THAT will only be as far as the government subsidy takes them.
I don’t think the Senate plan(s) mean what you think they mean.
Don’t have cable. What did Olberman say?
An absolute to your first sentence.
A disgruntled sigh to the reality of not just one senator, but our president, and his COS, and the WHOLE CONGRESS!
It’s a steep hill we climb.
We climb it anyway, because we must.
We can die in the lowlands, or die on the hill fighting.
Was it Wiener or Dean who shot Harkin’s fancy starter shack down with the Medicare analogy, reminding us that since then Medicare hasn’t improved one god damn bit!
at this point who gives a rat’s ass. strip it down to essentials: put in on one page with big print then reconcile reconcile reconcile. after this i want blood on the floor of congress and joe lieberman naked out in the snow.
¥eah, the attempt above at liveblogging KO left me quite uninformed and clueless as to what actually went down.
I can work with that.
Called out Obama on substance (broken promises re: public option and his no to mandates position), as well as on plainly moral grounds. Kill this perversity was KO’s final position. A beaut. soon a hit on YouTube, I hope.
Wendell Potter says its Socialism for the Corporations and Corporate gouging for us.
we all can. seriously, democrats grow a pair. it’s not as though banging heads and losing is any better than “winning” with this limp piece of shit anyway.
We elect them to rep us, and make our lives better.
They get elected to get rich, and pay back favors to those that got them elected.
System’s broke.
Don’t know how to fix it. Well, I know how, many know how, but not how to get it actually done.
There’s the rub.
Well , maybe if they are illegal and undocumented, that could be the “tribute” they pay…
Gibbs’ “irrational” quip is going to make Dean stalwarts very, very cross with Obama.
i haven’t assumed the worst of elected officials but this is about nothing more, at this point, than the president and the democrats to simply play hardball and get this done. reconciliation exists for a reason and the GOP has absolutely no problem doing what it takes to get any measure of garbage passed. but the democrats are trying to be what? NICE. f*** nice. get it done.
Howard Dean and Bernie Sanders are better men than the Democrats deserve. I wish Dean would consider a primary challenge against Obama in 2012.
And on Wall Street – no cigar for Obama, just smoke out his ass for us:
“It was just a matter of time before the administration’s covert plan of rewarding bank execs for massive failure by allowing them to load up their balance sheets with record risk once again, while paying out historic bonuses, blew up in Larry Summers’ face. Today’s attempt by the government to not only allow the failed Citi management team to pay itself an infinite amount of money more than it deserves for destroying one of America’s landmark companies (why the hell is Vikram Pandit still in charge of the Titanic?) but to pretend that it “generated” another taxpayer win by selling off its shares at a profit, was aborted after hours, when Citi could barely find enough interest to sell $17 billion at the embarrassingly low price of $3.15, below that government’s cost basis. This will preclude Obama from making a TV appearance tomorrow of how the US taxpayer made even more money by backstopping Moral Hazard. What the US taxpayer however did do, is funnel money straight out of its pocket, into that of Vikram’s worthless lackeys.”

You are one of the few left, Bernie, who actually give a shit about the American people. Thank you

awesome
Hurray for Senator Bernie Sanders!!!! At least there is one senator with some backbone and who really is for the people of this country.
apparently that kossack was right all along
Bernie Sanders is God
I agree. This Bill must die a horrible death. At the very least it should be renames the “health-care Insurance Companies Screw the Taxpayer Act of 2009″. Read more details on my blog at http://joergsprogressivetalk.blogspot.com
where I comment on the lack of stones that Democrats in Congress seem to have, and how it’s going to cost them dearly in the 2010 midterms.
Go Senator Sanders. I feel betrayed by the President and the other Senators.
hell ya bernie, weiner and all the others have caved so please stick to your guns on this!
That’s exactly what it is. Couldn’t have said it better.
Now the real negotiation begins.
Sen. Sanders is a good man and means well, but in the end, i strongly believe he will fall in line with the rest of the toads in the democratic party. He has my respect. Interestingly, Sanders is more of a democrat than the actually democrats he caucuses with.
Is it too late to vote for Bernie for president?
Im so proud of Bernie .Where’s Feingold ? Keith rocked it tonight. Never been a bolder soul on cable .Obama ‘s business socialism won’t play anymore as the electorate realizes monopolism is corporate communism that expropriates public wealth to privatize government and snuff the competition and innovation of free enerprise .
This all they got now? To threaten us with national bankruptcy? You’re kidding me, right? Right?
cross posting moderator asleep or sumpthing:
The U.S. Army War College warned in 2008 November warned in a monograph [click on Policypointers’ pdf link to see the report] titled “Known Unknowns: Unconventional ‘Strategic Shocks’ in Defense Strategy Development” of crash-induced unrest:
The military must be prepared, the document warned, for a “violent, strategic dislocation inside the United States,” which could be provoked by “unforeseen economic collapse,” “purposeful domestic resistance,” “pervasive public health emergencies” or “loss of functioning political and legal order.” The “widespread civil violence,” the document said, “would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities in extremis to defend basic domestic order and human security.” “An American government and defense establishment lulled into complacency by a long-secure domestic order would be forced to rapidly divest some or most external security commitments in order to address rapidly expanding human insecurity at home,” it went on. “Under the most extreme circumstances, this might include use of military force against hostile groups inside the United States. Further, DoD [the Department of Defense] would be, by necessity, an essential enabling hub for the continuity of political authority in a multi-state or nationwide civil conflict or disturbance,” the document read.
Intresting.
Question is whether we can get used to the permanent reduction of quality of life quick enough to re-hybernate or not.
Dear Vermont,
Thank you all for producing two of the most sane and courageous national political figures that exist: Bernie Sanders and Howard Dean. May one of them decide to primary Obama’s ass in 2012 and be victorious, because he is a traitor and an asshole.
Sincerely,
Ryan
The health insurance industry has acted predictably! An historical repeat like The mindset of slave owners, who placed their myopic self interest (profit) first, while usurping the rights of people, because people are property! The Curse of Dred Scott created by Justice Taney?????
At least Bernie has balls and realizes this alleged reform is a Trojan horse, for the continued raping of America by health insurance corporations which are anti trust exempt, and many tax exempt??
As the “Alcoholic” has a deleterious effect on the remainder of his family, the health insurers decimate the “Republic” to feed their addictions????
Corporate Slime in Corporate Crime, eviscerating life and liberty all the time, for what? Like DRUNKS in denial!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bernie shouldn’t have shown his card, he should waited until the last moment until they cast the votes and voted no to tank this mandated pile of shit that they call hcr.
Not sure. They will now try to twist his arm by any means. Thats got to be countered by grassroots support for him, and Burris or any other senator thats willing to put up a fight!
