It’s delightful to see someone in the media go after Politico for their stenography. J-Mart looked like the cat who ate the canary having to dodge the question about how Dick Cheney was using Politico as his conduit. And there’s simply no excuse for it. Cheney uses Politico because he knows they won’t challenge him in any meaningful way or even ask him a follow-up question, preferring to just be a printing press for the “Cheney Times” pamphlet. Maybe there’s a content-sharing agreement; we didn’t learn that on this go-round.
But I think of all the people to hit Politico for this, the last person qualified to do so is Chris Matthews. This is the guy who takes Cheney’s blast fax to Politico and turns it into a 20-minute segment, over multiple days, every time. Sure, he may criticize the former Vice President, but if there’s no such thing as bad publicity, Matthews is Cheney’s Col. Tom Parker. And he allows Cheney to drive the discussion on his show the moment he utters a word to Politico.
Here’s an 8 minute Hardball segment on Cheney from December 9. Here’s 9 more minutes on December 1. Another 9 minutes on October 28. And 9 more on October 23. And this. And this.
I’d be willing to bet that every time Politico rents out some space to Dick Cheney, Chris Matthews dutifully puts it on the air. And yes, he’ll have people in to criticize the soundbites, and he’ll jump in himself, and whatever poor fool defending Fourthbranch will be overwhelmed. But the guy will get his message out. It’s almost like Hardball is being… well, used, as almost a… conduit.
Matthews has never been the most self-aware person, but I wish somebody else would take the lead on criticizing Politico for reacting to every utterance of a disgraced former Vice President by giving him valuable media space.

About FDL News Desk
So why is Tweety talking tough to Darth? Tweety is a weather vane is the Media finally figuring out we are the majority?
And Jonathon Martin is a legitimate “journalist” in the eyes of the Village. Really quite pathetic.
That grin on Martin’s face wasn’t so much cat that swallowed the canary. More like the canary just pooped in his mouth. I thought Matthews nailed him, righteously.
Johnny “Petunias” Martin was the erstwhile cub reporter featured in the famous Meghan McInsane video at the McInsane
cabinmassive estate bar-b-que. He brought flowers for Sindy, and Meghan thought that was so sweeeeeeet! Tee-hee! And I remember some sort of thing where he would was hounding Obama one day when Obama made surprise appearance in the Press Room, and started pissing everyone off. Imagine he showed that sort of drive when doing his stenography for Shrub or DeadEye Cheney. The Tweety kabuki dance is so tired. Notice how he lets the last word be Petunias reciting a Repub talking point as “there’s a case to be made….” Pathetic all around.
Does anyone still watch Matthews?
” a disgraced former Vice President,” David Dayen what solid evidence do you have that Dick Cheney has performed any illegal acts that would warrant that remark. Your charge leads me to believe that you are just another “left wing nutjob” that is trying to ruin this country!
I so rarely watch Tweety for this very reason: he gives too much ultimately fawning publicity, and hence sycophantic endorsement, to rightwing criminals, like Dickbreath Cheney, Felon DeLay, KKK Robertson & so on. Even when Tweety is purporting to be tossing his very own hard balls at the right, he is at the same time giving them deep french kisses on the mouth.
No thanks. Rarely watch this thoughtless tool for that very reason, but I can believe the contents of this article. It echos my feelings exactly both about Tweety’s hard balls and the vapidity and cupidity of Politico. Bah.
Wow. It’s hard to believe it, but FDL is sporting the deceptive HCAN fundraising ad based on the notion that the House bill still has a chance to pass. I saw it on Kos today and said to myself “it figures”, but to see it here, the only major progressive site that finally told the truth about health care reform, is really sad.
when exactly did more of the same become the change we can believe in?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington%27s_Farewell_Address#The_Dangers_of_Political_Parties
The Dangers of Political Parties
“Washington continues to advance his idea of the dangers of sectionalism and expands his warning to include the dangers of political parties to the government and country as a whole. His warnings took on added significance with the recent creation of the Democratic-Republican Party by Jefferson, to oppose Hamilton’s Federalist Party, which had been created a year earlier in 1791, which in many ways promoted the interest of certain regions and groups of Americans over others. A more pressing concern for Washington, which he makes reference to in this portion of the address, was the Democratic-Republican efforts to align with France and the Federalist efforts to ally the nation with Great Britain in an ongoing conflict between the two European nations brought about by the French Revolution.”
“While Washington accepts the fact that it is natural for people to organize and operate within groups like political parties, he also argues that every government has recognized political parties as an enemy and has sought to repress them because of their tendency to seek more power than other groups and take revenge on political opponents. He argues that these parties’ efforts to seize power and exact revenge upon their opponents have led to horrible atrocities and will ultimately end in despotism as people throw their support behind the most powerful faction and the faction focuses on increasing their own power instead of promoting the public liberty.”
“Washington goes on to acknowledge the fact that parties are sometimes beneficial in promoting liberty in monarchies, but argues that political parties must be restrained in a popularly elected government because of their tendency to distract the government from their duties, create unfounded jealousies amongst groups and regions, raise false alarms amongst the people, promote riots and insurrection, and provide foreign nations and interests access to the government where they can impose their will upon the country.”
Is Cheney the quintessential “energy” corpo-aristocrat who cannot control his passion in the lust for endless profit as Jefferson feared?
Disgrace does not = criminal; that is your own inference. He is a snarling disgrace, and even some of his own buds have been critical
of his behavior toward a new Commander in Chief. You do not have the
facts to mount your specific attack; I am sure you can/will try again.
Is shooters co Hal.. needy of free socialist war protection some where and not getting it? Is Haliburton in or wanting to go in Yemen?
Chris who?
“Self aware” and Tweety in the same sentence. He’s getting so bad he’s become self mocking. Usually don’t even flip thru to see what he’s saying, but on the rare occassion when I do, the cringe factor is unbearable.
Chris Matthews works for a gigantic corporation, which is a legal entity solely and ruthlessly dedicated to profit by any means necessary. Why are we even surprised that he serves power?
Another way to look at it is that Cheney’s Big Bass War Drums, louder and loathesome as they are, provide great political cover for our WAR ESCALATING , Peace Prize Winning Pretzeldent.
Frankly, I bet Dick Cheney is laughing his ass off at the Public’s naivete every night. As are the kept men and mistresses of the punditry class, if you watch long enough, they’re Security State adherrants all. Like Matthews, who regularly engages in the kind of overt warmongering zealotry that makes the coldest of Cold War cadavers seem positively cuddly.
I suppose if Cheney lives long enough, maybe we’ll see the same sickening ex-officio chummy-ness between Obama and Darth Vader that we now see with the Big Dawg and Poppy Bush.
War Mongers ALL. Palatable packaging or not.
While the plundered populace takes their eye off the ball.
And continue paying for this propped up Empire in Decline.
Of course, it’s always facilitated with the ~Looky Here~ brand of dog whistle incredulity from the media.
It’s a sap’s game.

the cringe factor is unbearable.
Seconded.
All jerks need principled men to remain silent! Leveraged servitude?
What’s a Tweety thread without this oldie but goodie?

Creepy dude, that Matthews is…
Patrick Fitzgerald said that there is a cloud over Cheney’s head after Scooter Libby was convicted in the Plame case. Cheney’s approval rating is under 20%.
Disgraced.
Good God, man…you dispute the obvious!
It’s true, Bush controlled the DOJ through USAG Gonzalez.
But come now. Cheney emerged without even a scratch on him. Nothing.
The spineless Democratic Congress saw to that.
Pelosi with the her much vaunted Majority meant to “Drain the swamp” in that disgrace of a 110th Congress willingly cleared “the table” for Cheney for political reasons.
Viewing this through a partisan lens anymore is ridiculous.
The Democrats have been enabling this all along.
As Obama is doing now.
RevBev, please point out the alleged “disgraceful acts, ” back up your views with fact not left wing rhetoric.
If we use your logic, the majority of Americans “polled” are against Obama care, the majority of Americans think Congress is doing a lousy job, (Dems run the Congress,) Obama’s ratings are in the tank, the misery index is the lowest since your pal Jimmy Carter ran this country…disgraceful, tell 25 million farmers in California that Democrats are holding up legislation that would feed millions of Americans, but the survival of “smeltfish” is more important than their livelyhoods. Oh, by the way, let’s give away more American hard earned money to enept countries for global warming. The word “crap” is not strong enough for your off the wall opinion.
“Viewing this through a partisan lens anymore is ridiculous.”
You are correct. The lenses serve as blinders to realities. The reality being, corporates identity has gutted America. The procedural due process rights of states and corporations enabled by the 14th Amendment have eviscerated the constitutional rights and protections designed for the individual, like Dred Scott!!
We have will now permitted corporations to placed a premium on life itself! Dred Scott was deemed property. Now Life and liberty is a function of servitude to monopolistic corporations who now profit from your coerced, forced associations into health insurance contracts under fear of IRS tax penalty? This is truly fucked up!
Americans need protection from corporations who “”buy”" the rule of law, undermine the public trust and destroy life and liberty in their lust for endless profit!
Who’s paying you?
Sir, if you cannot see any disgrace in Shooter, including my reference to his tasteless attacks on the President, we do not even speak the same language. I am happy to “fold ‘em.”
We are a reality-based community and we rely on facts.
Patrick Fitzgerald said that there is a cloud over Cheney’s head after Scooter Libby was convicted in the Plame case. Cheney’s approval rating is under 20%.
Disgraced.
Why do I not scroll past the troll?
One particular egregious, recognized by his own groupies, was in his pretend search of the Veep candidate for W. Nice how he elicted background/confidential material on potential candidates, and used it to discredit them and position himself….disgraceful? Unethical? Take your pick. Just part of a pattern.
Great question….I think it was the disgraceful/criminal equivalence that hooked me. What tripe. Thanks
At least Tweety brought out the political calculation. Gosh, it’s 2010 and we’re ramping up for midterm elections. Gosh, we’re talking about terror and national security again v. the economy. Gosh, there were tips about the suspect, yet he was not apprehended. Gosh, there are ties between Chertoff and full body screening manufacturers.
Gosh, I wonder why, after so many years of “Bush keeping us safe”, a guy would be able to wander onto the plane with a faulty bomb. Did something change? Did Obama appoint new airline security all around the world? Did he have Panetta change all CIA personnel? FBI?
Gosh…
Yeah, if the troll can’t see that Dick Cheney is disgraced, there really is no hope of inserting truth into the vacuous cavity of its skull.
This comment is of the same quality that shows up on the SF Chronicle every g-d day. floater in the punchbowl.
Me? I just love Dick Cheney and his manliness. Wow! What a hunk! So flipping MACHO that he dodges war FIVE times to have a baby! That’s macho. Sending other kids to war and saying “so?” That’s macho.
I gave up on Tweety a long ago for being a limo-liberal; his preoccupation w/ Cheney has turned tracking the former VP
into a minor cottage industry of sorts. Given MSNBC’s ratings
and programming challenges (they’ll try anything), Tweety’s
a soft touch for the Cheney-mill crowd, but I don’t think there
is much traction to be had w/ all the attention (it is truly
boring stuff). As far as keeping in the public eye–Cheney is
on the outside w/ his nose pressed up against Twitty’s window
pane (and MSNBC loves it).
Yellow and the Rev, are we ignoring Democratic poster boys, Charlie Rangel and Tim Guitner, the “tax cheats?” What about Cris Dodd and “sweetheart” loans from Countrywide, The Ben Nelson, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Max Baucus Show. How about, Hillary’s campaign donors?, the word Disgrace has two meanings, it all depends what party you are in…excuse me I have to TV’o Chris Matthews (do you feel the tingle?) and duck Keith Olbermann’s paperwods. I’ll tell ya..these two tell it like it is!
crooks are crooks no matter what their party affiliation,
and then there is Cheney…
Amplification of the message is all that matters. No matter what the viewpoint, the message is broadcast.
Hey, points for using the grammatically correct “DemocratIC.” William F. Buckley would be proud, since he refused to use the modern day Repub “Democrat Party” childish game too!
Elliott, Elliott, Elliott…You are right about crooks, both parties are stocked with them. But to call one crook a bigger crook than the other is partisan. Democrats and Republicans, they’re all crooks. Most politicians, from local city councils to our “so called” representatives in Washington, are driven by lobbiests and money. That’s how they keep power. And we’re the poor “saps” that perpetuate their tenure.
Absolutely. That’s been their whole trick since they started consolidating all the MegaMedia 30+ years ago.The above video clip is a perfect illustration, especially with the last word bit, the part most people remember when all is said and done, where the propagandist Johnny Martin says there’s a case to be made that Obama doesn’t take threats to the US seriously, as if that’s a fact. And here’s a word from our sponsors…
Ah, the ‘ol false equivalency game. That’s a tried and true one for y’all, that never seems to get old no matter how often it’s proven incorrect.
Bonkers, with all due repect, what in the hell are you talking about?
We are a reality based community.
Dick Cheney–in addition to his corruption with lobbyists, Halliburton, etc–outed a spy working on Nuclear Proliferation issues. He illegally spied on Americans. He violated the Geneva Conventions by normalizing torture. He had a hand in “losing” emails and corrupting the archiving system which is obstruction of justice. He formed CIA hit squads to assasinate foreign leaders.
The list goes on and on, and that is only what we now know. Dick Cheney is in a league all his own when it comes to corruption.
Medium still the message.
high treason outranks crook
Once again, you have no facts backing up your allegations, only opinion, if we ran our country on public opinion, this Administration and Congress would be out of office. Chaney, believe it or not, could be our next president. Take two Zantac and call me in the morning!
Oh man, this has got to be performance art.
Hey, I’d vote for Lon Chaney for President.
I dunno, his last run on LSH wasn’t that bad.
It was about time Matthews slammed Politico for just being a stenographer of every Cheney Talking Point.
How many times before yesterday did Matthews go to Politico and their writers as if they were writing the “Bible of News”? Way too many!!
I’d rather vote for Don Chaney myself – at least he’s alive
try to keep up, sparky.
Hahahaha. Whatever.
If you can’t have a discussion based on objective facts, which clearly you cannot, there are plenty of other places that will accept you. I suspect politicalcircus has plenty of other clowns to play with.
Well, that’s an easy one. He wants one of the Cheney’s on his show. Whatever it takes to get them there…
I would think shooting someone in the face as not only disgraceful. It most likely was also criminal behavior if the facts were known.
