Roger Ailes, the Chairman and CEO of the Fox News Channel, will appear on ABC’s “This Week” on the roundtable segment. He will be joined by George Will, Arianna Huffington and Paul Krugman, in what could be one of the more interesting Sunday morning shows in recent history.
I’m racking my brain, but I cannot recall Ailes ever giving a public appearance of this nature. He’s much more of a string-puller behind the scenes. Perhaps Barbara Walters, this week’s substitute host for the departed George Stephanopoulos lured him into the spotlight. Walters and Ailes are reportedly friends.
Ailes was the recent subject of a long feature in the New York Times, which included some not-so-flattering information about his personal paranoia:
As powerful as he is within the News Corporation, Mr. Ailes remains a spectral presence outside the Fox News offices. National security had long been a preoccupation of Fox News, and it was clear in the interview that the 9/11 attacks had a profound effect on Mr. Ailes. They convinced him that he and his network could be terrorist targets [...]
His movements now are shadowed by a phalanx of corporate-provided security. He travels to and from work in a miniature convoy of two sport utility vehicles. A camera on his desk displays the comings and goings outside his office, where he usually keeps the blinds drawn.
Mr. Ailes said he received frequent threats over the years, but his concerns for the safety of his family were heightened by an incident at his New Jersey home after the 9/11 attacks. There was an intruder on his property, but no arrest was made. In Putnam County, he has bought several properties surrounding his home. A sign outside his house shows an illustration of a gun and advises visitors that it is under video surveillance.
It’s unclear how much security will be required outside the Newseum, where “This Week” is taped, on Sunday.

Cheney-like pants-wetting. Why are our Strong Daddies such fraidy-cats?
Yep – paranoid tough guys.
Sad life to be constantly afraid. Wasn’t there some rumor of this guy running for President or somesuch?
Ailes and Fox are making themselves a lot more important than they really are. I don’t imagine the “terrorists” know who Ailes is.
Fear Junkie!
Roger Ailes answer questions honestly without lying or assurances that no such question would be asked? I’ll believe that when I see it.
Funny that he reminds me of the gunfighter who always sat with his back to the wall because he was sure the rest of the world was gunning for him. I think it was Wyatt Earp, who was also quite a killer.
Is Roger showing the world that he will take over Fox after Rupert is dead?
I think they should move the show to Guantanamo, where they can provide the necessary security and have better rules for asking questions.
Barbara will ask him what kind of tree he would like to be. George will take 10 minutes asking a dumb ass question that could have been asked in 10 words. Krugman will attempt to be cerebral and Arianna will be shouted down. Typical MSM bullshit.
His self absorption and opinion of himself matches his visage: over-blown.
Saber rattlers, war-mongers, and chicken hawks all suffer from the same malady; gutlessness to the core. They have no problem sending others to die and do their dirty work, they talk tough, and are full of bluff-and-bluster. When it comes time to engage face-to-face and put it on the line, they fold like a cheap lawn chair. Deep down, they know what they are and that’s why they hate people of real principle so much.
I don’t think the terrists are dumb enough to attack Ailes. He’s the best guy on their side. Think about it: he magnifies any terror they can create by a factor of at least ten.
Scrapin’ the barrel even more than usual…
Typical schoolyard bullies…
He learned it from Cheney’s “BE AFRAID, BE VERY, VERY AFRAID” motto.
I used to enjoy watching the occasional Krugman/George Will smackdown but This Week (like the rest of the talking heads shows) has become must miss TV in my home. Sorry Babs, your friend Woger doesn’t inspire me to tune in.
Very True.
ALL the networks work for the terrorists. On 9/12/01 I unplugged my TV and left it off for two weeks, preferring to get my news elsewhere. Didn’t make any difference of course, as the resulting hysteria went on for months/years.
Ailes is more concerned about DFH libruls coming after him than foreign terrorists ’cause you know how much the Left loves violence…
Ailes has always run their “news” operation. Murdoch is afraid to overrule him. The question is when Murdoch kicks it, will his offspring challenge Ailes?
Of all the TV Networks it’s obvious that ABC has developed a case of “FOX News Envy” and is now trying to imitate them in hopes of boosting their ratings. You know, breathless, hysterical “breaking news” type journalism with little or no fact checking and never challenging the assertions, propaganda talking points or outright lies of those their “journalists” interview!
You just watch, this weekend Ailes will make assertions that would embarrass Beck, Bill O, Rushblo and Hannity and no one on the “panel of experts”, especially Barbra WA-WA will challange him on them.
Ailes is gonna play these chumps and this program like Clapton does a guitar and even more of “Idiot America” will tune to ClusterFOX…
Disney, Newscorp and NBC Universal are partners in Hulu. Disney also owns ESPN, and since they took over, there are quite a few more flyovers before games-football plus national anthem plus fighter jets flyover= patriotism. The MOTU are very thorough.
I wonder if anyone will ask him how long he will subsidize the Money losing Glenn Beck show. I think I’ll ask his boss on Tuesday at the conference call, “Glenn Beck has lost over 80 advertisers. What impact did that have on the overall profitablity of the division? We know you have patience for money losing entities but when do you expect advertisers to return to the show and overall revenues to increase?”
Murdoch is putting up his London newspapers for sale and I’m sure that he’ll sell the NY Post now that he has the WSJ. I think he’ll stop after he gets the NY Times.
It might be a good time to put pressure on Murdoch. If Ailes isn’t there, neither is Beck. Bell-ow will be there regardless. I also wonder how many of Beck’s lost advertisers just switch their contributions to other Faux shows. Still, getting rid of Beck would be big.
Do you have a source for that about Murdoch selling his London newspapers? Given the (still) prestige with which the Times is held, he’d be holding on to that one for forever.
As far as him “getting” the NY Times? By getting, do you mean purchasing or driving out of business? My swag would be that he has no desire to own it but would delight in driving it out of business (or make it as irrelevant as the NY Post)
Not a fan of Wolff, but his sources are pretty strong and he had unheard of access to the Murdoch clan. I think he’d rather own both the WSJ and NYT, but would settle for driving them out of business. If it gets to that point, he won’t have much competition and his ego would demand another brand-name toy, IMO.
http://www.newser.com/off-the-grid/post/382/is-a-tweet-news-and-is-murdoch-selling-his-papers.html
Well, since he does already own the WSJ, I doubt if he wants to put it out of business but yeah, I do think he’d far more like to run the NY Times out of business via the WSJ than to own it (as shown by his attempts to build a metro version of the WSJ that apparently is not going all that well)
yes, my sentence was unclear. I meant he would settle for putting the Times out of business. Murdoch at once loves and has destroyed the newspaper business. I believe he is only happy when he is running his print empire. That is his passion, and his strategy has been to own multiple newspapers, drive out the competition, and then buy the best brand. I just cannot see him passing on the NYT when it becomes available.
His family seems to be more interested in televison.
I wonder if Barbara Walters has designs on Scott Brown. She confessed to relations with the last GOP Senator from Massachusetts, after all.
