If anybody was actually paying attention, they’d see the Republican national security brand melt before their eyes in the past couple weeks. They first smeared the White House about reading Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab his Miranda rights. Then it came out that Abdulmutallab was talking after an interrogation process marked by help from his family and the citing of good treatment as key to the value of the intelligence. The GOP responded that the White House wasted 6 weeks, as if bonds are built overnight. Now, John Brennan has revealed that he told GOP Congressional leaders THE NIGHT OF THE FAILED BOMBING that they were taking Abdulmutallab into custody.
White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan revealed Sunday that he briefed four Republican congressional leaders on Christmas night about the arrest and subsequent handling of the suspect in an attempted sky bombing.
“None of those individuals raised any concerns with me, at that point,” Brennan said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “They didn’t say, ‘Is he going into military custody? Is he going to be Mirandized?’ They were very appreciative of the information. We told them we’d keep them informed. And that’s what we did.”
The revelation could undermine Republican complaints about the reading of Miranda rights to the Nigerian suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmatallab.
Ya think?
Marcy has hit this already, so I won’t dwell. But we should all re-emphasize something. In response, Kit Bond, one of the four Republicans briefed (McConnell, Boehner, Bond and Pete Hoekstra, the minority leaders and the ranking members of the Intelligence Committees, were the four), said, “Brennan never told me any of plans to Mirandize the Christmas Day bomber — if he had I would told him the administration was making a mistake.” What Brennan said, and all he had to say, is that Abdulmutallab was in FBI custody. Because it proceeds necessarily from there that his Miranda rights are read. That would be the standard practice of law enforcement in the United States.
Republicans are not only bloodthirsty when it comes to national security, they’re also willfully ignorant.

The Republican national security brand has been bullshit for a long, long time.
As I keep pointing out to my Republican friends, “enhanced interrogation” is just as legal AFTER the suspect has been mirandized as before.
If I was defense atty, I might try to make the case that since the THREAT of transfer to the military system was and is still there and since the abuse of suspects in that system has been well documented, therefore anything he said was under duress and inadmissable.
Boxturtle (I’d probably lose, but my witness list would be interesting)
The last time I counted Democrats outnumber Republicans. It was their call…who’s running this country anyway….oh I forgot…Blame it on Bush!
The last time I looked Democrats were runnng this country….do the math…they’re the party in power….or are they….? I’m surprised Dayan didn’t blame it on Bush!
NBC’s “Meet the Press,” David Gregory interview with CIA ‘secret team’ member, John Brennan, accomplished one thing in spades.
The interview was so obviously pre-scripted and contrived between the media and this senior member of the ‘national security state’ that any but the dullest viewer could immediately see that these two elements of the corporate/financial/militarist EMPIRE — that rules our country by hiding behind the facade of its two-party ‘Vichy’ sham of democratic government — is a monolith that speaks and deceives as one voice.
There was nothing more to be learned from the supposed interview (monologue Empire dictate) because the factual issue that the national security state’s intelligence service actually allowed ‘Christmas Bomber’, Abdulmutallab, into the US precisely by its own agents, regardless of the possibility that he would kill US passengers, was politely ignored and not mentioned by either Gregory or Brennan.
This fact, that the CIA over-rode the State Department’s efforts to pull the visa and allowed an armed terrorist into the US on a commercial airliner seems to have been missed or silenced not only by Gregory and Brennan in this phony contrived interview, but by the New York Times, the Washington Post, and all other complicit Empire controlled media in the US.
Why not report the results of the January 27 hearing of the House Committee on Homeland Security which established that US intelligence agencies stopped the State Department from revoking the US visa of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab? Why not indeed, NYT??
This fact is not going to be able to be successfully buried as many others have — since its in the House record.
