President Obama popped in on the White House press briefing today for one of his first question-and-answer sessions since July. And the two big topics where this White House health care summit scheduled for February 25, as well as the subject of bipartisanship and both parties working together in Washington. To that end, the President said that, if his nominees for routine appointments keep getting held up in the Senate for no good reason, he would consider moving many of them through recess appointments “in the upcoming recess” which begins next week.
On health care, the President reiterated his pledge to get a bill done, similar to his Organizing for America compatriots today. He called the rate hike by Anthem Blue Cross in California a “preview of coming attractions,” and while he acknowledged there was little he could do about that, he maintained this is why a reform bill is so important. “I don’t have authority to issue an order lowering everyone’s rates, if I could, I would have done that already…. There’s no shortcut in dealing with this issue… Without some action, it is very unlikely that we see any improvement over the current trajectory.” He added that this was the first year in history where more people were getting health care from the government than the private sector, and that the erosion of the employer-based system had to be shored up by something that controls costs and covers more people.
Speaking about the issue with nominees, Obama said that, while he respected the Senate’s role to advise and consent, “qualified nominees have been held up despite having overwhelming support… That’s not advise and consent, that’s delay and obstruct.” He made note of the blanket hold, recently lifted, by Richard Shelby, and the 96-0 vote to confirm Martha Johnson to run the General Services Administration, which took 9 months. President Obama today asked Republican Congressional leaders to put a stop to all the holds on his nominees, and he said that if they persisted, “I will consider making several recess appointments during the upcoming recess.”
The President proceeded from the expectation that the Feb. 25 health care summit would actually take place, although he did not agree to any of the list of demands put forth by Republicans in their recent letter, particularly the idea of scrapping the bill entirely and starting over. He said that he’s starting from scratch only in the sense that he would be open to ideas that meet core goals of coverage expansion and cost containment. What he would not do, he said, is to agree to every single aspect of a Republican wish list for health care without getting them to vote for it. “Bipartisanship can’t be, I agree to all the things they believe in or want, and they agree to nothing that I believe in or want. That cannot be the price of bipartisanship … that’s not how it works in any other walk of life.”
It’s unclear how much more the President can concede on these points, anyway. The Senate health care bill is chock full of concessions to Republicans already. Presumably the idea of the meeting is to add on, or pretend to add on, one more layer of that, and then advance to a vote to get this done.
Obama said that the process of the last year had the effect of contaminating the substance of the bills. He thinks that a public airing of the relevant parts will actually increase public support in the process and the policy. In exchange, Republicans get a public showcase for their ideas.
He said that the White House has not refined the agenda for the health care summit, though he did say that he wanted to make sure the CBO would be available to answer questions. “Let’s establish some common facts,” the President said.
Other topics included energy, financial regulation, Iran’s nuclear program, and jobs.

In that private meeting between Obama and the Repugs, apparently Boner and Obama had some of those “testy moments.” The meeting supposedly did not go well (*surprise*). I wonder if Obama has learned anything from all this, is capable of learning, or even cares to learn.
Any doubt the GOP will keep Congress in session during the Winter recess just like the Democrats did to Bush. And claim the Dems did it too.

It would be nice if he actually follows through on this.
He’ll consider it, huh? Scary stuff.
Since the Republicans don’t control the Senate (which is how the Dems managed to stay in session the last 2 years of BushCo), it won’t be an issue at the moment.
Subject to change after November of course.
Here comes the “arrogance” (uppity no matter who says it)!
He called the rate hike by Anthem Blue Cross in California a “preview of coming attractions,” and while he acknowledged there was little he could do about that, he maintained this this is why a reform bill is so important. “I don’t have authority to issue an order lowering everyone’s rates, if I could, I would have done that already…. Well, this is a preview of coming attractions with Obamacare. If insurance companies do this now without a mandate, just wait until the insurance companies get the IRS to force you to buy their product. If you don’t think rate hikes would be made worse with Obamacare, go look up the concept of Captive Markets to see the bad effects that has on pricing. Obama cut deals with corporate lobbyists that would have actually lead to reduce costs, so instead Obama passes on the high costs to the middle class. Things like the Dorgan amendment and other such things that would actually lower healthcare costs were killed off to benefit the corporate lobbyists resulting in a huge middle class tax increase while defeating the purpose of this bill – which the original purpose of this bill was supposed to be to get HC as a percentage of GDP reduced, but instead Obamacare actually exacerbates what Obama said was a crisis by making more people by more expensive products while taxing the middle class to provide corporate welfare. We could have had real reform that actually reduced costs (instead of just shifting costs around and raising costs), but Obama has fought that all along the way.
Yay, recess! And, then nap time with milk and graham crackers.
Good for the President. I think he’ll do it. Since I can only speculate, why not go with the positive? I think he’s ready to challenge the Shelbys.
go away kid, ya bother me
How’s L’il Bit’s eye coming along?
My new Buddy is turning out to be a best friend.
What did O have written on the palms of his hands?
Stitches out of the eye Thursday we hope! Thanks
demi,
You funny. Thanks, I needed that.
Oh? Not the dissolving kind, then?. Well, good on him anyway.
(((puppy love)))
Talk, talk, talk. Obama talks the talk but rarely walks the walk.
Some people are just little black rain clouds. It’s okay. I’ve got an umbrella.
Raven,
I think I got this right.
A couple of days ago you had a comment about the snowstorm in Washington D.C. and mentioned that a walk past the Vietnam Memorial would be good about then.
The very next day a picture appeared in our local paper showing the Memorial and the reflection off the granite of two people doing just what you suggested.
That is a very special place and I never miss going there when I am in Washington. I have friends names on that wall.
Citizen Raven:
Wadup with the “stitches” thing…did yer pooch get tangled up with sumpthin that shoulda been left alone?
Citizen AppleCanyon2:
I haven’t been in DC since November of 1966…now that we are empty nesters, the wife wants ta go ta DC on a road trip in the Spring since she’s never been there. She thinks I should make a stop by the monument when we go but I don’t know if I can handle it…I got a bunch a names ta look up.
What he SHOULD have learned is to KICK THEIR ASSES!
It’s a phenomenally powerful monument. Gird your loins & do it, even if it makes you break down. It has that effect even on people who don’t have names on the wall.
I’ll believe it when I see it. Obama’s still kissing GOP ass with his “health care summit” when it’s obvious to everyone in the fucking world that the GOP doesn’t want to work with him.
Citizen Bluetoe2:
I’m gettin’ tired a havin’ ta defend my President for what he HASN’T done but then I step back and look at what HAS been done on a lotta fronts and by whom and I get my shit straight about who the enemy is and where the shots should be fired. I don’t think this last year coulda been any better politically given how he put his staff and administration together but I do know that it coulda been a whole lot worse. I think he’s taken the best shots the fascists have outside of a CIA sniper and now he’s gettin’ his legs under ‘im and he’s fixin’ ta stick the politics right up the fascists’ asses. Now I could be wrong and he might really be a dumb blond in disguise and might just cave in to the krypto-Nazi motherfuckers but if that’s the case then we’re gunna ALL be in the street tangled up with some East European Blackwater mecenaries.
Dog and Pony show. They ARE working with him. This is all just one big fake kumbaya. He openly admits supporting basically anything they toss at him. Not sure why he doesn’t just finalize it by switching parties.
why announce it, just do it. wouldn’t it be nice to see dawn johnson appointed? i am not holding my breath.
Next he’ll threaten to hold his breath until he turns blue, or write a sternly worded letter or two!!
Citizen, they won’t be Eastern European mercenaries of Xe, they will be red blooded Americans throwing in their lot with the fascists hoping to gain wealth, power and prestige. Americans have proven they are more than willing to fire on their fellow citizens with deadly forced if the pay is good and the order is given. Besides there are many in the U.S. that are just itching to kill some lefties.
Norske,
I wrote you a long description of the Vietnam Wall and then the #$%#$&
comment disappeared before I could send it to you.
My computer is kicking out but I will get back to you if this comment goes through.
Norske and Apple. Lil Bit had a second cataract surgery. As far as the Wall, I prefer to go there either during vets events or very late at night when there are no tourists. I don’t expect most people to treat it other than “another road side attraction” but I just don’t want to be there then. I went with a group of vets after a Delta to DMZ event raising $$ for the women’s monument and had a intense experience with a nurse who was afraid to go down to the wall because she “didn’t know” any of them, just treated them and sent them on. We walked and I put faces and stories with some names and it seemed to help her.
As far as “handling it” that’s for each individual. At the 20th Anniversary I took my turn reading names and was fortunate to be able to read my good friends that night.
Norske and Raven,
I will have to get back to you on the Wall. Having trouble with the computer that will not let me write longer than a few sentences before kicking out.
Raven and eCahn’s at #21 is right on.
Citizen Raven:
Thanks Brother Freebird…I feel exactly like that nurse you spoke of and for us who were doin what she did it’s too hard to confront all a those names and not have enough faces. I spent 6 months as night “NCOIC” of a pre-op ward in the largest Evac Hospital in the Central Highlands, the last six months were spent with the orthopedic surgical team doin casts and tractions and circulatin’ in the OR… there are so many that deserved more’n I had ta give and I don’t know how I will handle facin’ ‘em all again.
Citizen AppleCanyon2:
Peace Brother…you know where I’m at most a the time, I’ll be ready when you are.
We did the best we could and they know that.
Dont hold your breath on this guys. O talks a great game but seems to come up short when it is time for action. One day, maybe, perhaps, he will understand that the republicans goal is to destroy his presidency. They have no interest in working with him. His election is an direct affront to their innermost white supramacist beliefs and no amount of reaching out to them is going to work. They are going to hate him regardless so he might as well give them something to hate him for by kicking some ass and getting some things done. But again dont hold your breath waiting on this.
You know I had a compression frac T-6 in 75, Harrington rods installed.
Hugs Norske.
Ditto!
I love the wall at night….not only quiet, but on the walk you can feel the going deeper into the dangerous darkness. An amazing feeling…fear, and all.
