I just spoke with Tamyra D’Ippolito, the candidate who was already running in the US Senate primary as a Democrat in Indiana before Evan Bayh ended his re-election bid today. D’Ippolito’s potential presence on the primary ballot complicates the ability for Indiana Democrats to handpick a nominee. If nobody qualifies for the primary, Indiana Dems can choose the candidate. But if D’Ippolito qualifies, then she would be the only candidate on that primary ballot, and Brad Ellsworth or Baron Hill or whoever would have to run a write-in campaign to defeat her in that primary in May.
So how’s D’Ippolito doing? She’s collected 3,500 of the 4,500 signatures, 500 in each Congressional district in Indiana, which are needed by noon tomorrow in order to qualify. D’Ippolito said that she’s particularly short in IN-08, in the Terre Haute/Evansville area of the district. Her campaign manager has contacted all of the heads of the county Democratic parties asking them if they would help her get on the ballot.
But she’s not getting the sense that they want to be helpful in that effort. “Politics in Indiana is the old boy’s school. They’re getting ready to put one of their own in,” D’Ippolito, a cafe owner in Bloomington who gained experience in politics running a primary campaign for Gretchen Clearwater in 2006. “My gut feeling tells me they’re meeting in a room, I don’t know if they’re smoking cigars,” D’Ippolito said, basically working under the assumption that Bayh’s announcement was timed so the state party could pick the nominee by themselves. “The timing of this is amazing.”
D’Ippolito told me she is the first woman to ever run for the US Senate in Indiana. Her impression from working on prior campaigns and from this one is that Indiana political culture is a “tight old boys school, it borders on sexism.” In a state where the population is 52% women, D’Ippolito says “in the future, we women of Indiana are not going to tolerate” the chummy, insider culture.
She’s heard the rumors of Brad Ellsworth or Baron Hill, both US Congressmen, jumping into the race. D’Ippolito ran the campaign of Gretchen Clearwater against Baron Hill in a primary in 2006, which Hill won.
Far from being chagrined by the lack of help from the state party, D’Ippolito was enthused by the attention being paid to the race. “Today is a very exciting day in Indiana politics,” she said. Even if she didn’t make the ballot this time around, she vowed to run in 2012 for the Senate against Richard Lugar, which would represent an improvement. Lugar ran unopposed in 2006.
The petition for state primary ballot placement is here.
UPDATE: The fact that Jill Long Thompson was the Democratic candidate for Governor in Indiana just two years ago would seem to cut against D’Ippolito’s suggestion that Indiana Democratic politics is ruled by men.

Why didn’t Bayh wait until after the filing deadline to announce?
I have a couple of hours available right now… any way to do some quick phone banking for her?
Tell me about her take on the issues? Is she progressive?
Check out my post: http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/29850 She is a real Democrat.
She’s anti-war, anti-poverty, and almost certainly a better candidate than Evan Bayh ever was:
On Facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tamyra-For-Senate/178606233224
Official website:
http://www.tamyraforsenate.com/
I updated my Facebook status to spread the word, though a phonebank this evening would be even better. Thanks for your work, Dave!
Any idea where these petitions are supposed to go? To her office? Does she have to be the one to physically file them?
I just spoke with her today and looked at her platform. She seems like a real-deal progressive.
I don’t know. Look at the comment section for the site off of TPM from people who have actually talked to this woman outside of some campaign talking points:
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/02/another-dem-already-in-race-for-bayhs-seat—-but-doesnt-have-the-needed-signatures-yet.php
This does not strike me as an electable official or someone I want in the United States Senate. Yeah, it’s anecdotal, but before pushing a candidate shouldn’t this site do more than just talk to her on the phone once and read a web page.
You do not need to be in contact with the campaign to get signatures. Registered voters just need to sign this form, and get it turned in to their local county clerk’s office by noon tomorrow (February 16).
From commenter L-Ro over at TPM
I don’t get the impression that they’re pushing a candidate, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to highlight the only candidate currently running on the Democratic side.
The fact remains that if D’Ippolito doesn’t get on the ballot we’re almost certainly stuck with Hill or Ellsworth, neither of whom would be a progressive Democrat. And we’ve got less than 24 hours to gather signatures.
Maybe D’Ippolito isn’t the strongest candidate, but she’s a genuine progressive, which is more than I can say about the likely appointees.
Do you have any counter proposals given the imminent deadline? Draft John Mellencamp?
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/2/15/135156/528
(Okay, that might be awesome, but it probably won’t happen.)
Not sure what kind of candidate she’d make, but she could use some Web-Design help.
Wow, I guess that does it. Some random person on TPM spoke out against her. We’d definitely better not support her.
If we are destined to lose the Senate seat in Nov., I’d rather a real progressive run than some “practical” candidate that will only serve his corporate masters just like Bayh did. She might be “unelectable” to you, in ol’ Conservative Indiana, but they said the same thing about Scott Brown in liberal MA.
Bowers has new post on OpenLeft begging readers NOT to help her.
http://www.openleft.com/diary/17405/#216611
So the choices are “unelectable” progressive, or conservative Democrat.
Not promising.
From what I’ve learned about Indiana politics in the past, those are comments I would expect about any woman candidate. Calling someone ‘fringe’ because she has a vagina is totally within bounds, apparently.
Personally, I don’t care whether she is “serious” or needs assistance to tie her shoes* — if she manages to move the discourse and the party farther to the left and away from the Bayh and Emmanuel approved style of governance. As long as the Democrats preserve a majority in the Senate, it might as well be a majority that supports progressive principles.
Besides, what have the “serious” legislators done for us lately?
* hypothetically — I’m not claiming she’s incompetent as others have; considering she’s a staunch advocate for the public option, she’s already shown herself to be much brighter than Bayh.
I live in Bloomington, and sadly, I would echo the TPM commenter’s remarks. If she ran her campaign like she runs her ‘restaurant’ she would be beyond-unelectable. No progressive option might be better than this option. In fact I’m amazed that this is even being considered.
She needs to have them taken physically to county election boards by tomorrow noon. The national media seems to think the deadline is Friday but it isn’t. If even one county chair was cooperative I would be shocked.
The same condition exists for the possible Republican challengers. So they are basically stuck with what they have, Hostettler and Coats being successful in the signature effort or not.
Bayh had a tough time getting signatures in the Marion County(Indianapolis) area, relatively. Meaning his people actually had to hustle for them when people refused to sign at the traditional clubs and other venues. But he likely got them. I think.
anybody is better than an establishment ‘wheel.’
but again, I’m not in Indiana, so ….
I know it’s fiction, but Eddie Murphy’s character in 48 Hours demonstrates the point. If she were to say she cares about people over corporations, she’d get my vote.
I’m voting anti corporate, and encouraging others to do the same.
More and more, this sounds like an amazing Fuck You to the Democratic Party from Evan Bayh. What a horrible odious man he is.
I think Billy Tauzin’s retirement from PhRMA is the trigger here, I really do.
If this lady can’t put up a decent photo that wasn’t taken with a cell phone in the dark, how in the name of God could she get elected to the Senate much less do a decent job? I know you need health insurance, but not as my Senator, please!
That was the case in 1994 and 1998 when I ran for state legislature.
I think a draft Lee Hamilton movement is the best shot for getting a more progressive Senator in the seat Bayh is leaving.
Here’s FireDogLake’s big chance to make a big change. How about helping her get up?
I contacted one of the workers for the Independent Voter’s Party campaign for mayor of Bloomington in 1991 (then and now a Union backer and mostly Democrat) via facebook. He’s working to get signatures.
I’m leaning that direction too. Maybe she’s not a great, establishment candidate, but it’s better than what the state party is likely to appoint so I’ll work on signatures this evening after work.
More from Indiana residents on D’Ippolito:
I sure hope Ms. D’Ippolito gets on the ballot in time. It will pretty much assure the GOP wins Bayh’s seat.
Indiana is not California.
I’d like to see her do it just so Rahm doesn’t get all excited at the prospect of putting one of his own, indebted to him and him alone, into the race. Besides, with the anti-incumbent, anti-establishment feeling out there, she might give the Repubs a run for their money and at least scare some insiders even if she doesn’t win.
opportunist ex-Banker… spoiler
If Bowers is against her, it means she’s a-ok to support.
Yeah, let’s help the DSCC and State Party Establishment to choose Bayh’s replacement. Won’t matter that he’ll be just like Bayh and vote the way his corporate masters want him too. I’m sorry you are against trying to run a candidate that would actually represent people.
And they said the same thing about Massachusetts. No way would they ever vote for a Republican!
Look at americas finances, gulp and try again. I’d rather see a failed restaurant owner than a successful lobbyist for Casino economics any day.
I think it’s unfair to sexists to say that politics in Indiana “borders on sexism”. It is out and out sexist. The timing of this departure is pure Rahm Emanuel. Guys from Chi town think they own upstate Indiana politics anyway. Why not the rest of it?
How recently was that? In one interview she said had cancer in the past with no health insurance from her restaurant. I think she has recovered.
That’s my impression. He announced late, and this works best for the GOP, who can pick a candidate from a primary field. It’s almost certainly an FU to Harry Reid, who, according to one of Bayh’s own aides, was only informed of this decision shortly before Bayh announced.
I follow Bowers’ reasoning, but I don’t find it especially compelling here. As others have (including Bowers) have noted, there’s a serious anti-incumbent mood out there, and the two most likely candidates for the Democratic Party of Indiana to nominate are both sitting congressmen. Neither is progressive.
In short, Bowers’ “pragmatism” is going to get us a conservative hack who will probably lose anyway.
If nothing else, losing a chance at picking their candidate would indicate to the Democrats in Indiana that they need to pick candidates who are more progressive. If it takes a relatively modest effort to get into the primary there, then I suspect it could be done any time a Democrat announced he was retiring.
RedState is now trying to get her the signatures. I am not linking to them.
Although they think she’s a ‘he.’ Idiots.
Oh, for God’s sake. If she does get on the ballot, we’re stuck with Dan Coats. Hill or Ellsworth have an actual shot of winning, D’Ippolito will just get massacred.
I have been a “lurker” on Firedoglake since it started. I signed up somewhere and posted one reply…when Christie left.
I had to get my password again to post here.
My head is steaming. As much as I admire DDay and his posts…I cannot support Progressives supporting Tamyra D’Ippolito to replace Birch Bayh!
This would be a disaster from what I’ve read about her.
Blindly going off and supporting any willy nilly Dems just because they seem “populist” (her being owner of Italian Restaurant) would be as bizarre as the Far Right supporting that idiot Sarah Palin because she “hunts moose and packs heat.”
I’ve been a supporter in money as well as signing almost all Firedoglake’s petitition efforts in the past. I’m a real lefty Dem…but to support a person who has such baggage for SENATE goes beyond anything I could do with any money of mine. For the HOUSE she might be an interesting mix but NOT for SENATE!
I’ve read DDay for years over at Digby Website. So, it’s not like I’m clueless about how we need to elect Progressives. But, from what I’m reading from “TPM” and “Open Left” this woman has terrible credibility. And, I worry that there are those on the left that will support a candidate just because they are FEMALE over anyone else…suspecting they will be better!
If Firedoglake supports Tamyra D’Ippolito then I will have to say that I will never sign another petition or give a dime to their efforts to support other candidates.
I wish I didn’t have to post this…but there are just times when we Dems can shoot ourselves MORE in the FOOT by supporting a candidate like this one..Tamyra D’Ippolito.
I love this site…it’s kept me sane since Obama hired Rahm Immanuel…but this time it’s just misguided nonsense to support this person thinking she’s PROGRESSIVE for the SENATE…when there’s no Hard Evidence that she is.
Just saying…I had to go through hoops to get my password and all to say this. But, I have donated to your ads that you did with Glenn Greenwald and Alan Grayson…and supported peititions against Lieberman. We’ve given to Act Blue through Firedoglake…but I will NEVER SUPPORT Tamyra D’Ippolito. It would be like what happened in Massachusetts..and I couldn’t handle that.
Sorry…in my anger I said “Birch Bayh” who is Evan’s Father…and a better man than the son.
Reminder to Self: Never post in anger..
I’m sure my mistake will mark me as a Freeper…but Firedoglake can check my donations…THEY KNOW I’ve supported them!
Respectfully,
TakBak
I would love to know exactly where in this post I “support” D’Ippolito. Is it because I talked to her? Where is the endorsement here?
Which races around the country do Progressives need to be involved in? Who are our candidates?
Remember, in this year of discontent we should be a good focused force which can support a small-ish group and yet do well since all about us there could be incumbents falling.
Let’s make the most of this year and focus our energies. Don’t spread out too much.
This is all too funny. I’m from Chicago and I thought our politics was nutty!
Tamyra D’Ippolito will get just enough petitions with help tonight from the left and right. The Dems will then have to knock a liberal woman off the ballot in front of a national audiance. With football over, I needed some real entertainment. Bring on the clowns!!!
I don’t think she will get enough petitions because they have to validated to make sure they are registered to vote. So unless she can nab 8k sigs she’s toast.
I hope she doesn’t get it. From what I’ve read from people who have actually looked into her past. Her business has failed and is close to foreclosure. She is illegally living in the loft apt over the building and has raised since Oct. $660 or so and she has been proven to lie in interviews.
She would get stomped in the general election by 30-40%. Hell she has been collecting petitions sigs since oct and is still down 1k. and from what I’ve read is that she needs 500 names in each county from registered voters. Then her names can be challenged.
I think its sad that FDL in under a day has latched onto an unknown stooge just because she is a woman and label herself as a liberal.
This place is starting to turn into a joke. If FDL wants to be taken seriously you shouldn’t hope into bed with republicans and you shouldn’t hand then senate seats.
Some pretty aggressive accusations.
Should be accompanied by links. Please.
http://openleft.com/diary/17405/insen-please-for-the-lobe-of-god-dont-help-tamyra-dippolito-get-on-the-ballot
has condensed a lot of the stuff.
I forgot to ad that she worked for Lehman Brothers on wall street for 25 years.
UPDATE: The fact that Jill Long Thompson was the Democratic candidate for Governor in Indiana just two years ago would seem to cut against D’Ippolito’s suggestion that Indiana Democratic politics is ruled by men.
So, when Dem women say that the Indiana Dem party is an old boys’ network, the women should be mistrusted. Why? Because a woman once ran for governor as a Democrat in Indiana (and lost miserably, BTW).
LOLsob. You’ve no idea.
d’Ippolito may be irresponsible and unrealistic, but I think it’s interesting that conservatives & liberals alike can’t wait to point out that yet another woman in politics is crazy. Haven’t heard THAT before.
In any event, unfortunately Bayh is about the only type of Democrat who could win a senate seat here in Indiana. He’s been riding his father’s coattails for years, and he’ll do anything to keep from making a stand of any kind (unless it’s conservative). I hate to be defeatist, but Bayh knew that the Dems were losing a senate seat when he annouced his retirement from the Senate. He’ll be on the board of Eli Lilly before we know it.
Do we really want a Progressive, why not get the real deal and get a communist to run?
