The push in the House and Senate for finishing the Senate bill through reconciliation, and the push to include the public option in that reconciliation sidecar, has focused attention on the need for 50 votes in the Senate. The road to 218 in the House (actually 217 now, because of two vacancies) has been less discussed, but people are starting to understand that passage is not guaranteed there. And the main impediment has always been Bart Stupak and his allies on the abortion funding issue. He considers the Nelson amendment from the Senate bill unacceptable, and the reconciliation sidecar strategy offers no way to ameliorate it within the current bill.
I was pleased to see that President Obama’s health care proposal did not include several of the sweetheart deals provided to select states in the Senate bill. Unfortunately, the President’s proposal encompasses the Senate language allowing public funding of abortion. The Senate language is a significant departure from current law and is unacceptable. While the President has laid out a health care proposal that brings us closer to resolving our differences, there is still work to be done before Congress can pass comprehensive health care reform.
Let’s recall Stupak’s statements during his brief media flurry after getting his amendment passed last year. “We won fair and square on the floor of the House” was basically his point of view. He considers this a settled victory, and he cannot return home and explain to supporters that the victory transformed into defeat, and he assented to it. Maybe that works for him on some other issues, but not this one. Even though the Nelson amendment may have the same practical effect as Stupak’s, only the latter has his name on it. And the anti-choice groups and the Catholic bishops have Stupak’s back on this.
After understanding that, it becomes a simple question of math. Stupak probably brings 10 House members or so with him on this, not because they are as invested in the abortion funding issue, but because it’s a nice way to vote against a health care bill they don’t want to see pass anyway. All of those votes would need to be made up on the other side, with members flipping from No on the House bill in November to Yes on this one. Virtually all of those potential flippers come from conservative-leaning districts, and all but three are up for re-election in November. If Nancy Pelosi can find 10 votes out of there she’s a miracle worker. I don’t buy Jim Clyburn’s spin that the House would get even more votes for the bill on the second pass. And Bart Stupak provides the reason why.

I don’t see House members voting for something so toxic.
I also think House Members have read or need to read the powerful article by Gleen Greenwald.
The white house and democratic senators are playing progressives for complete fools.
Now it is Jay Rockfeller turn to play the role of villian.
See Jay Rockfeller was for the Public Option when he knew it could not pass with 60 votes, now all of sudden it can pass with 50 votes, he is against it.
The White House and Senate Dems are laughing at Progressives. They have been playing this shell game for years, this current batch of Dem Senators and the White House will never pass any worthwhile Progressive Legislation.
This is why we Progressives must hold Harry Reid feet to the fire, make the Seante vote up or down on the Public Option and other important Progressive legislation, so we Progressives can see who our enemies are.
( I am thinking the Senate is full of a lot rats, acting like progressives, but hate progressives ideas)
We already know Obama is full of it, Mr. I love the public option, and when he writes his HCR bill it no where to be found.
This is why it will be important this fall and 2012 when these Blue Dog (traitors of the Dem party) come needing progressive help for us progressives to say NO!
All Blue Dogs dems must have a primary challenge.
Members in the House have better wake up, the White House and Senate Dems consider them complete MORONS!
I keep hearing that people think there’s a path to pass this thing. I check to make sure I’m hearing right. There are so many obstacles I don’t see how it’s possible I don’t even see any realistic game plan in evidence.
But here’s the issue: even conservative leaning districts are in favor of a public option. I think the main thing that has driven all the activity over the last 3 weeks or so is the polls that show voters consistently and in many cases overwhelmingly want a public option and will vote for a politician that gives them that. Stupak may lose his seat, not over the abortion issue, but over the public option if it passes. Think about that.
In an era of diminishing resources and almost total financial and economic collapse, it’s always comforting to know there’s no shortage of assholes.
Hey Bart: You’re right up there with the best of ‘em. And say hello to your homeboys over at C Street…
Government by the corrupt and the crazy. The Republicans have no bill at all nor any ideas. The Democrats have various proposals that run the gamut from the awful to the horrendous. No matter what happens this is not governance, not even a caricature of it.
I live in Bart’s district. Someone PLEASE do a profile of this district. It is suffering. It has to have thousands and thousands of people uninsured. Blue Cross Michigan raised its rates 30 percent last year. The hospital;s and clinics in this huge district have been punished by the current system and struggle to make it.
He cannot allow himself to deny his district important, life-saving health care just because of his theology on abortion. His stance is not popular here, and when people here find out what he will give up in the name of his personal religion, they would toss him out.
Bart does not tell anyone “back home” that he is voting against the healthcare bill because of the abortion language. He won’t say it here. His staff won’t say it.
I hope someone out there can do the research on this district and realize that the profile here is perfect for healthcare reform.
He could be defeated with an even half-sensible opponent.
During his campaign Obama was the height of savviness, quick to react to challenges and respond to the public mood. Then he gets in the Oval Office and within a month that’s all gone. It’s not just progressives but his base generally and it’s not just ignoring their desires but sticking it to them at every opportunity. Healthcare is the model. Bad ideas that get worse. And the persistence in them even when at this point a win is as devastating or even more so than a loss. What we are seeing is government, political elites, and a President totally divorced from reality.
Oh, but we tried and tried! We really did! It was those bad Republicans….Pleeeeeese send me money…..
And when the democrats loose a bunch of seats in November, it will be read as “They were too partisan and we must move-to-the-center”
I’ve given up on them doing anything worthwhile. If they pass something, it will almost certainly be a corporate giveaway nightmare. I like that the subject keeps coming up, though, because it is a rare look into exactly where people stand before elections. Do you really believe in a public option? Do you really believe in women’s right to choose (and not just Stupak but my senator, Barbara Boxer, who was willing to sign off on Nelson’s crap)? This doesn’t usually play out so openly.
I’d almost feel sorry for Obama since in normal times his backroom deals and ditching of public options wouldn’t even have hit the national radar and he wouldn’t have to deal with this crap. Who cares if a few left of the left fringies complain on blogs nobody reads, right? Oops, today too many people are actually paying attention to blogs. Only he’s selling us down the river so I feel sorrier for us than I do for his sorry ass.
Your thread title and first sentence tells it all.
The Bill. It’s As If, and yes, I am a Valley Girl the only legitimate topic here is Health Reform.
On the other hand, I have noticed some articles about banking institutions here and there.
You may be too busy writing your columns to see that there seems to be a drop in the number of commenters here and there, depending on the post.
Trying to help the Lake, not hurt it. Why else would I post a diary every Sunday.
Forests and Trees is what I’m saying. Thank you for your hard work, especially when it’s so narrowly focused. Guessing that’s an assignment.
Do we have a plan if this bill does fail?
The site meter actually shows no real drop in visits but it is true that there seems to be less comments. I think people are so frustrated and stressed that they are speechless and feeling powerless.
I think the only way to make a change is to boycott the insurance companies. Hard choices to make.
No drop in site visit’s: That’s good
Feeling powerless: That’s what the MOTU expect.
Ummmm, so basically we turn the country into a big die-in? That’s not a plan.
Didn’t Stupak announce he isn’t running again? Good riddance to another pretend Democrat. Maybe the coming November purge will rid us of more of his buddies.
Uh-uh. He said he won’t run for Governor of Michigan. He’s not going anywhere.
Dunno… wondering if they are foolish enough to think they can bluff and strut this sh*t out long enough to take them into election campaign season, and then as usual, cave…
Then, after November 2010 with Kirk, Ellsworth etc in the Senate — and who knows who in the House — god knows what the new HCR bill will look like. The Pharma lobby et. al I can’t believe have given up the ghost yet! They know they still have the time and money to work both sides of the aisle.
Yes, and think when was the last time the Democratic party (our supposed opposition party all those years against the rethugs) actually supported, even sponsored a real progressive/populist? The system has been rigged for a while now — the problem is, what are we going to do about it…? Tinkering with the House, and not the Senate, and only making noises (usually too late) at and around primary time just ain’t gonna cut it.
and the DCCC is just begging the guy to stay…
Also I’ve noticed that LGBT community have not held back on their outrage at the Democratic Party supporting Ellsworth’s run for the Senate:
However, I’m still waiting to hear from women groups, especially NARAL and Planned Parenthood on what the Democratic Party is blatantly doing to us when supporting a Ellsworth candidacy.
Hey, he’s a team player. Who can blame them?
Status:
The hospitals are merging, that is.. the “big” regional hospitals are merging (Munson in TC and Spectrum in GR) after having eaten all the small local hospitals and clinics. Great concern over this. Then there is the Grand Traverse Pavilions where you can live if you are aging and can afford the care (funded by tax dollars and takes care of the GOB’s) Health care reform is desperately needed.
There are a very few clinics for the rural poor- mostly by DO’s who are not owned by the above.
You will find a flyer for women in the local post offices advertising free mammograms through the County Health Dept. Surprised there still is one? (But-disdain for things public by the ruling Chamber- except for their tax increment financing welfare and use of public bonds.)
Stupak should be ashamed. He may have the Vatican, but the stunt he is pulling has angered 50% of the population who have never been addressed by him in the district before and I think Jesus, who had no patience with this kind of small-minded, self-gratifying “conscience”. Stupak must be planning an exit and a lobbying job with the robes.
?? Maybe mobilize a public option-non-profit HEALTH CARE MARCH ON Washington? AARP WHERE ARE YOU? TEACHERS- WHERE ARE YOU? RETIREES WHERE ARE YOU? SICK PEOPLE EVERYWHERE WHERE ARE YOU? JOE AND MARYSUE WHERE ARE YOU? Now, that would be something. Millions of Americans that have had it. Showing up to demand health care. Horror of horrors- wouldn’t that just scare the shit out of the liars? What better bi-partisan march for all Americans than non-profit health care or Medicare for all. WE WOULD HAVE A BILL BEFORE WE HAD A CHANCE TO BOOK THE DATE.
FOR OUR CHILDREN, OUR PARENTS and our children’s children. Lets screw with them and mean it. They can’t get away with any more of this crap.
