Multiple sources report that New York Governor David Paterson, reeling from a damaging New York Times story about intervening in an aide’s domestic violence case, will end his campaign for Governor. An announcement is expected later today.
The Times printed three successive stories about Paterson in the last couple weeks, after rumors flew that their stories would force a resignation from the Governor. To be clear, no resignation is expected yet, just an end to the election campaign, although the former is being discussed.
No official announcement has been made, but the Post says one is expected later today. Two sources familiar with the decision confirmed to TPM that Paterson will end his campaign.
A Democratic source familiar with New York politics tells TPM the Times story was a “profound disappointment” to Paterson’s friends and staff. “There’s an ongoing discussion about resigning his office,” the source said.
National Democrats are confident that they can hold the New York governorship, an official with the Democratic Governors Association tells TPM.
Three of the statewide Democrats on the ticket in New York State in 2006 have now resigned their posts or declined to run for re-election: former Governor Eliot Spitzer, then-Lt. Governor Paterson and former Comptroller Alan Hevesi.
Paterson was inundated by allies with requests not to seek re-election, according to the Times.
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, one of the survivors on the Democratic side of that 2006 election, is widely expected to seek the Governor’s office.

Not from NY, but my hopes are on Cuomo.
O/T Andy Stern is being named to the Debt Commission.
“Obama will name David Cote, chief executive officer at Honeywell International, and former Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Alice Rivlin to the panel today, an administration official said. He will also appoint Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, and Ann Fudge, the former chief executive officer of Young & Rubicam Brands.”
Saw that, will have something soon.
Oh, great!
As a NYer I’m quite pleased with this. Patterson has been the very definition of worthless.
I like what I know about Cuomo, and he’s been nice ans viscious as AG on big corporation, ala Spitzer.
Term and a half for Cuomo as NY Governor, then a run for President in 2016.
