Ending one of the shorter political careers in recent memory, Rep. Eric Massa, a freshman Democrat in a swing seat, will not seek re-election, possibly because of a recurrence of the cancer that almost took his life several years ago.
As I reported last month, Massa was diagnosed with terminal non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and was given just a few months to live. He survived, became active in politics and won his Congressional seat on his second try. Since then, he has become one of the more outspoken freshman members of Congress in the country.
CQ reports that the cancer has returned, but attributed it to a source. Massa has been raising money for another run, so my assumption is it would have to be something like that for him to abruptly leave. Massa scheduled a conference call at 3pm ET to make the announcement.
UPDATE: Politico is reporting (no link) that Massa has been accused of sexually harassing a male staffer, and that this is the reason for him stepping down. There’s no corroboration whatsoever for these allegations.
UPDATE II: ABC quotes a source saying that Massa will immediately resign. We’ll know soon enough.
UPDATE III: On his conference call, Massa confirms that he has had a recurrence of cancer. He will retire but not resign. And he said on the call that “I will now enter the final phase of my life.”
Hey, thanks for “winning the day” and smearing a terminally ill man with anonymous sources, Politico! Get that Pulitzer application ready!
UPDATE IV: Just wondering if John Bresnahan, Jonathan Allen and Josh Kraushaar will burn their sources now that the main reason for the retirement, as described by Massa, is terminal cancer.
UPDATE V: Glad to see that the National Journal sees fit to relate Mark Foley’s case, where we had multiple instant messages from Foley trying to bugger pages, to “some people say” Politico bullshit.

Damn, what a shame . . . a fine human and a delight to watch on the political stage.
I wish him and family well.
Very disappointing. It was a great day when he pushed shotgun wielding Randy Kuhl out of the office.
I admired him for standing up to a very intimidating Tea Party crowd at a town hall
that I attended back in August. Not all of his votes were ones that I liked,
but he is a courageous individual and will be sorely missed.
This certainly comes out of left field. It’s sad to lose someone like Massa.
What a pity. Sounds like illness, if he’s going to resign. I hope it isn’t as serious as that implies.
If true, good riddance. Who’s next?
Massa was on a very short list of true friends of the single-payer movement in Congress. I will miss his contributions, and I withhold judgment on rumors of allegations.
Fucking Politico needs to be ignored. It’s just the less rabid sibling of FOX.
Maddow and others could take a lead here by not legitimizing them as a source.
Good luck, Mr. Massa, we need more like you.
I’ve learned to distrust stories based on anonymous sources like this, even if it’s from “multiple” anonymous sources. This is why. I don’t know much about Massa, but what I do know about him made me doubt that he’d be chased out of DC by the “male staffer”.
Politico really is a crap publication.
If the harrassment rumor is bunk, then in my view Politico would be ethically obligated to reveal its anonymous source.
For Rep. Massa, I am so sorry.
For Politico, my contempt merely increases.
Unfortunately, Maddow isn’t responsible for legitimizing it – I’m afraid it was taken ever-so-seriously from the moment it began, just because its founders were MSM members-of-the-village in good standing.
It’s a pity, but there it is.
Fat chance. This is how lying is done in DC these days – anonymous whispering to a reporter whose lack of ethics makes him a willing stenographer.
Politico as usual is not fit for my dog to shit on.
Massa is a good Man, and not just because he is a former Navy officer. He represented the People of his district, and not the elite or rich.
He will be missed in Congress. There are too few like him there.
Why don’t you go Teabag youself? That’s about all the brainpower you appear to possess…
[modnote: please don't make it personal, thank you.]
as if!
dupe
Why are you defending sexual harassment?
There is no evidence of any sexual harassment. Massa is resigning due to a recurrence of cancer and doctor’s recommendation.
Part of the point of this post is how despicably Politico used an anonymous source to smear Rep. Massa with unconfirmed anonymous sourcing. without more than this headline from Politico, some of us are not inclined to leap to conclusions.
Eric’s statement….

You’re going to have to read his statement more carefully.
Massa did not say that he had a recurrence of cancer.
Massa did not say his doctors recommended retirement.
Massa did say that the rumors of sexual harassment are based in reality.
But he won’t take questions.

Much light and love out to Eric and his family. Good that he’ll be out of that toxic atmosphere.
Sexually harassing someone of the same sex? Sounds like Massa’s going to switch parties!
He already did.
Massa’s statement clearly attributes his retirement to his terminal cancer, following a serious recurrence in December and at the advice of his physicians. He cops to using “salty” language when angry (compare Mark Foley, who used creepy language when horny).
However, he did not explicitly deny that harrassment complaints were ever filed against him. The issue would be a lot cleaner if he had; if he can close that door definitively, he should. Firedoglike is right that a careful reading of the statement leaves room for some suspicion; however, that commenter also seems awful quick and awful gleeful to regard Massa as some kind of sex offender.
Not true.
Massa says he had a cancer scare in December. A cancer scare is when you think you have a cancer issue (or another cancer issue) but do not.
Everything Massa has said points to sexual harassment being the reason behind his decision to retire.
