Continuing this theme of a subtle but noticeable comeback for Democrats in the polls, two more out today show Michael Bennet and Arlen Specter coming back in their respective races.
In Colorado, Bennet is in a dead heat with expected Republican nominee Jane Norton, with each at 43%. Bennet isn’t in the greatest position here because the poll shows him with more unified support in his party, while Norton leads among independents. But Norton’s comments about Social Security being a Ponzi scheme, a reflection of her far-right beliefs, could erode that indie support in a hurry. Andrew Romanoff, the former state House speaker challenging Bennet in a primary, actually leads Norton, though it’s unclear whether he’s positioned to win the Democratic nomination.
In Pennsylvania, Arlen Specter is holding steady, with a healthy lead over Joe Sestak in the primary and a measurable lead over Pat Toomey in the general election. Sestak trails Toomey within the margin of error, but his name ID is very low (and he only has a couple months to raise them). Specter’s favorables suggest that he can win a general election over Toomey.
I would say that, regardless of the candidate, Democrats see improved chances to hold these two seats.
