I’ve got to go. Here’s what you need to know:
• The Rules Committee markup starts at 10am ET tomorrow. I wouldn’t totally expect something Stupak-related to jump in there at the last minute – whatever the deal is would probably have to take the form of a future guarantee. The procedural hurdles seem too large.
• Bart Stupak has a press conference scheduled tomorrow morning. We’ll know what we need to know from that.
• The President meets with the House caucus at 2:45pm ET tomorrow. Harry Reid will be on hand. The Senate doesn’t want to release the memo intended to prove that they will pass the reconciliation sidecar, but that basically confirms that there is one. I imagine Reid will bring it with him.
• Bob Etheridge is a yes, Heath Shuler a no, blah blah. If you’ve been following along here you already knew that.
• Politico won the afternoon, I didn’t pay any attention to Memogate and I feel like a better person for it. More here.
• The student loan piece in the bill has really been slashed:
But the amount going to education spending and aid for college students is far less than the Obama administration had hoped, largely because the savings from the switch to direct federal lending is now estimated to be $61 billion, rather than $87 billion.
In addition, $9 billion of the savings would be used to offset the costs of the health care overhaul proposed by the Democrats — an amount that lets the health care proposal meet requirements for the package to go through the budget-reconciliation process.
On top of that, $10 billion of the savings would go to deficit reduction.
Much more than I expected to offset and reduce the deficit. Some of the best parts of SAFRA have been wiped out. Historically black and minority-service colleges still receive $2.5 billion under the bill, though.
• Orrin Hatch trying to scare House Democrats about reconciliation changes.
• Arizona drops their CHIP program. California almost did this last year. If the funding isn’t there in the states, and they refuse to raise the revenue, you’ll see more of this. Awful.
• This explanation for the achievement of health care – not helping!
• Paul Broun casually mentions “the war of Yankee aggression” on the House floor.

Also: Dan Choi speaks after his day in court
“There was no freer moment than being in that prison. It was freeing for me, and I thought of all of the other people that were still trapped – that were still handcuffed and fettered in their hearts. And we might have been caged up physically, but the message was very clear to all of the people who think that equality can be purchased with a donation, or with a cocktail party, or with tokens, that are serving in a public role. We are worth more than tokens. We have absolute value. And when the person who is oppressed by his own country wants to find out how to get that dignity back – being chained up and being arrested – that’s how you get your dignity conferred back upon you. And so I think that by actions, my call is to every leader – not just talking gay leaders – I’m talking any leader who believes in America, and the promises of America can be manifest. We’re gonna do it again. And we’re going to keep doing it until the promises are manifest. And we will not stop. This is a very clear message to President Obama and any other leader who supposes to talk for the American promise and the American people. We will not go away.”

I think Cao’s a firm no now. My impression also from speaking to his office. I’m a constituent.
dave, how can you say politico “won” the afternoon? they were among the first to spread the disingenuous piece of fiction memo. just because they posted a correction later, doesn’t absolve them from their negligence to source or confirm their story.
come on, buddy, unless you are talking strictly about page views, there’s no way politico “won” anything today.
it was a joke

Unemployment soars in U.S. metropolitan areas
“The Riverside and San Bernardino area of Southern California, along with Detroit-Warren-Livonia in Michigan had the highest unemployment rates for areas with populations of 1 million or more. While Detroit has been hurt by fluctuations in the automobile industry, Southern California has suffered mostly from the bursting of the housing bubble.”
