A major development: Chris Carney (D-PA) will vote yes on the health care bill. Carney was sort of part of the Stupak bloc, but wasn’t on the list of Democrats who co-sponsored Bart Stupak’s ultimately failed amendment.
Carney was present at a meeting between Speaker Pelosi and three anti-choice Democrats (Carney, Kathy Dahlkemper and Steve Driehaus). The fact that he came out of this and decided to vote Yes bodes well for the Democratic leadership.
UPDATE: Carney’s statement.
In addition, Jim Costa and Henry Cuellar decided to lend their support to the bill, but I already had them in the count as Yes votes (Cuellar actually announced yesterday, I believe).
Seeing fellow Californian Costa come home, and with Dennis Cardoza’s main complaint, the deem and pass strategy, rendered moot by the House leadership going away from that path, I think we can confidently put Cardoza down as a Yes, too. UPDATE: That’s confirmed.
UPDATE: Jerry McNerney is a confirmed list, he just went out to his list and said he would support reform.
The new count is 204 Yes, 205 No, with now 12 undecided and 10 assumed in the Stupak bloc.

About FDL News Desk
Well, I’ve said before I appreciate your hard work on this, but as I’ve also said before, this is a done deal or Pelosi wouldn’t have called for the vote immediately after the 72 hours were up.
I wish that weren’t the case, but it is what it is. The national Democratic Party, led by one BO, wanted this bill. They worked in every instance for the crap in this bill and against the good suggestions.
So they’ve got the votes. They’re just arguing over which Democrats in swing districts they can let vote no. They wanted this, and they’ve got it.
From tomorrow forward, it’s our job to make sure they own it, IMO.
I’m very glad there’s other people like me who don’t own it, and who tried to stop it.
It is really ugly to watch, though.
From Carney’s statement: “I am voting for this legislation because all Americans should have the same insurance choices enjoyed by members of Congress and their
families.”
What am I missing? Where in this legislaion am I given the same choices AND benefits as a member of Congress?
A mandate is not a choice!
Yep.
Yeah, me too. When I first came here I realized this was the best political site on the toobz. To see these folks stand up against all the negative thrown at them makes me realize even more what a great group folks these are.
When you realize there are a lot of people that do genuinely want to do the right thing, it does tend to give you hope that someday the right thing might get done, against all of the odds.
Thank you for that Jane, Jon, David, and ALL other folks here at FDL. Most importantly including the commenters here. Be proud of your stance here, you refused to bend to the status quo, and that’s a good thing. Even in defeat, that’s a good thing.
I love this site.
Yep “squared,” OFG.
cubed.
Actually, there is a stipulation where the members of Congress get their coverage through the exchanges. Really.
This is the kind of shit that infuriates me. These people are a disgrace.
Thank you so very much for the detailed reporting on the health care bill vote. I greatly appreciate the up to date information you have provided.
I am completely against the bills being offered as health care reform. I do not think they will make health care more affordable. I do not think they will be any more sustainable than Medicare.
The continued support of 3rd party payment will only increase the moral bind for physicians like myself: In advising my patients on what is in their best interest, I am put in the position of detracting from the good of the community. If forced to considered the needs of the community, I can not truly advocate and advise my patients on what is in their individual best interest. this is true in both private and public third party payment systems, but at least when done within the realm of private insurance, the patient is making a choice.
Caring for the less fortunate is important…but should not be attempted by means which trample on the inalienable rights of others. The only solutions which will be moral and practical (sustainable) are the ones found within the political bounds of the respect for individual rights, equally before the law. The current bills do not accomplish this.
Starting over would be hard and in some ways discouraging….but is completely necessary if we want to help those in need and preserve the principles of life, liberty and property which have made this nation so prosperous and generous.
I realize that the majority of commenters on this site are in favor of of the bills. I hope you will have the grace to see that there are carefully thought out and deeply held rational reasons for disagreeing.
Whatever happens in the vote, we will continue to be citizens and neighbors together in wonderful country–but our disagreements will not be resolved.

Add a .50 tax to every fast food order which exceeds 500 total calories. With the millions of those sold every day in America, that would help illuminate the issue, discourage the consumption a little, and toss billions of dollars into the kitty to finance health reform…

Checking the whip count up at the top of the page which now shows 204 Yay but nobody in the “Lean Yes” category, vs 205 against, 10 “Lean No” and 9 Unknown. Wouldn’t it be ironic if this bill is defeated by Blue Dogs, the Stupak bloc, and a few progressives…but Dennis Kucinish sacrificed all his integrity and all his standing and all his future, just to be on the wrong side?
On the one hand, that would be sad. But on the other hand it would be fan-fucking-tastic, because we now know what he isn’t made of.
