I never had Sanford Bishop in my counts until his name showed up on the Stupak amendment yesterday. But apparently, he decided to vote for the bill late last night, which changes the calculation a bit, in favor of Pelosi and the Democrats.
“Unfortunately I think that my constituents are split right down the middle, so in a sense I’m dammed if I do, damned if I don’t,” Bishop said in an interview.
“If I’m going to be dammed, I want to be damned on the side of the angels, on the side of what I think will be an obligation as a Christian to take care of the least of (us) and to make sure people are treated fairly,” he said.
Bishop’s conversion is pretty momentous. It means that the leadership needs only to flip 1, or maybe 2 (depending on Chris Carney) more Democrats, along with running the table on the undecideds, to get to 216.
The new whip count would be 203 Yes, 206 No, 12 undecided, 10 Stupak bloc.
UPDATE: Melissa Bean will vote yes, as well. So will Baron Hill, but I already counted him as a Yes based on other statements. So it’s 204-206, 11 undecided, 10 Stupak bloc.

“to take care of the least of (us)” – noble thought, for sure, but is it accurate? will the bill mostly help or harm the least of us? imo, at best it’s not clear, and the support is there for much better with the people and the congress; but not in the white house or the dem leadership.
just came across this interesting comment on another blog:
“As a physician who has NOT been a member of the AMA for years, this is one of the reasons why. The true number is that the AMA represents less than 17% of physicians – many of those being non-clinical academic physicians as well as medical students. The Democrats have also BOUGHT the AMA endorsement by giving them exclusive rights to produce medical-billing codes – a huge revenue stream for the AMA, especially in light of recent declines in membership.
More telling are the 18 medical specialty societies who have come out against this disgusting monstrosity.

“
Notice how Stewart and others point out how the reich-wing talking machine parrots the same phrase from many people? They all get the ‘memo’ or fax from RNC, then go out and all say the same thing – it’s really ridiculous.
“it’s not perfect, but…”
Now, doesn’t this remind you of that?
This bill is a mistake. The abortion language should have been added from the start and the public option better articulated back in SeptemberOctober. To think this trillion dollar bill will win or lose on 1 or 2 votes is hardly good enough. The loser will challenge this and we will waste another 18 months after the election watching it gutted with even less teeth than it has now.
Cardoza just complicated things. He said he is not going to support the bills passage via “deem and pass.”
Reported by “TheHill.”

he said he’d vote against the rule in the Rules Committee, not the floor.
Still an out for him, but he probably goes to undecided. I’ve been watching him and Costa. Cardoza has a decently funded GOP opponent.
