Loretta Sanchez’ Chief of Staff confirmed to the OC Register that she would make it to Washington in time to vote on the health care bill today.
I’d feel more comfortable putting her in the undecided category at this point, based on what I know. Groups like the Courage Campaign and OFA are really pressuring her.
In addition, I think you have to pull Rick Boucher into the undecided column. He’s been wavering for days after coming out as a pretty sure no.
That would make the vote count 206-207, with 9 undecideds and 9 possibly in the Stupak bloc. Stupak scheduled another press conference that was postponed; stay tuned.
UPDATE: Incidentally, here’s what Sanchez tweeted on March 16, 5 days ago:
1 in 4 Californians lack health insurance (including over 190,000 in Orange County). Major, major drag on state & local economy!

It was clear yesterday that Sanchez had not confirmed her vote either way.
Boucher is R 11 he aint voting yes and Sanchez aint voting no
Kos diarist following Luke Russert’s tweet says Stupak 8 confirming executive order language, with agreement and text to be released at 12:30 ET.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/3/21/848550/-Breaking:-222-w-Stupak-8,-WH-exec-order-on-abortion-to-be-released-at-12:30-p.m.-EST
I would expect that DeGette and her posse have to approve of the language too.
The way I reading it the dems are gonna get 220 now…the Stupak group will fold except Stu and Barry and the UnD except Davis and Boucher
Even if Stupak votes “yes”, I hope that gal up in MI doesn’t lose momentum in her primary challenge to Stupak. Stupak is poison to Dems.
The EO means nothing and of course DD and the choice group will accept the only question is who in the group will take it as their holy cover and bite the bullett and if they fall for it then they really were just BS’ing all along which most every one knew to start with
In a way, it doesn’t matter if this bill passes or not. Of course, if it does, the creeping corporate tyranny will have quit creeping and taken a huge step forward in instituting itself. But even if the bill does not pass, we already have absolute proof of the fact that the US government is a wholly corrupt edifice, the two parties having no relation whatsoever to any sort of “public interest”. We have proof here that the government is completely broken and dysfunctional, and not reformable through any regular process or means.
And if Obama issues an executive order giving Nancy Pelosi and the anti-abortionists (might as well lump Pelosi and all of the rest of the “liberals” in Congress in with “Stupak and the anti-abortionists”) what she wants, then, rightfully, the Democrats will have assaulted one of their biggest and most active constituencies. They’ll get what they deserve, we can only hope -
Maybe the media should take a hard look at the Stupak show. We’ve got multiple press conferences that have been scheduled and cancelled…You can see the guy spin his position one way on Fox News (“I’ve got a lot of OTHER problems with this bill!”) while taking a far different position on MSNBC (“I really WANT to vote for the bill!”)….He’s yet to produce a firm list of the “Stupak
2520dozen1068″… This guy is clowning everybody. It sounds like Sanchez was a release. They thought they had enough votes to allow her to vote no.
This signal, that she will be there, imho suggests how close this thing still is.
That sure sounds like a rationalization for a “yes” to me.
Of course, if she’d bothered to read the FDL “fact sheet,” she’d find that this bill won’t help her constituents.
WAG alert, back when Rahm thought he had plenty of votes, it sounds as though the plan was for Sanchez to miss the vote.
Yup, it’s there for all to see. With Bush there was some plausible deniability, now that ‘dems’ are showing their true colors, that’s all over.
I apologize for not knowing this, but what is the magic number? Anyone?
Obama, is poison to Dems. Don’t you KOS people get it? Obama is signing the “Executive” order.
And the “E”O means nothing, meme is getting old already too, damien. You all are in full force today.
Did ya’ll put your talking points up on the fridge last night or stick them in the bathroom so you can see them when you take your first piss on women today?
Missing a vote like this to attend a fundraiser doesn’t seem like something she’d do without a ‘permission slip’…
216.
Thanks. Serious arm-breaking going on at this point, I’m guessing.
I hate this business of Pelosi “releasing” individual Representatives so that they can vote NO on the bill to appease their conservative constituencies. That kind of political maneuvering is sick. Vote your damn conscience and let the chips fall where they may.
And that will become your standard talking point too for future usage. “Women” signed off on this too.
That the myth, none of them has a conscience. There was a quote from a staffer in Matt Taibbi’s article on HCR.
“This is all a game to these people – and they’re really good at it.”
It’ll pass. There are more than enough corporate whores in the Dem party.
I just love the latest hyper-rationalization for passing this bill – that it will allegedly, and for the first time, make health care coverage a right. Really? A personal statutory requirement punishable by fines? Is that what “rights” have been reduced to now?? Some “progressives” are really grasping at straws to make themselves feel better about this disaster.
It sickens me that the same person who took low cost birth control out of the stimulus bill is now ready to ensure that the same women he wouldn’t provide low cost birth control to, now be required to go through childbirth and suffer through begging for the support for not only themselves, but the child they were literally FORCED to bring into the world.
And another thing. Don’t forget you little fucks, some can smell your talking points from a mile away. Our noses became quite keen. We will never forget.
I was happy to see you had removed Marcy Kaptur from the list, but I will clarify it again – Rep. Marcy Kaptur announced in Ohio that she would vote yes. I would have been so sad to have to stop publicly supporting her.
I am in Snachez’s district, and a member of the MoveOn group here. Regardless of whether it would help the large number of illegals, it would help the large number of uninsured.
A win today will make immigration reform easier; a loss may kill it. She needs to vote yes today, for her constituents, and the progressive movement as a whole.
Where does this bill say it will help “illegals”? (Such a horrid term to call people that are not legal residents). I thought Obama said in the State of the Union “that is not true”, when responding to the Republican who said “You lie”.
MoveOn isn’t progressive. It’s Dem partisanship at it’s finest. Perhaps if you are a real progressive you should rethink your support.
This bill won’t help the undocumented (I agree, a better term); but it WILL help those who are poor, most of whom are Hispanic (in her district).
And the MoveOn people I meet with are Progressive to their core.
Again, we win today, immigration reform will be easier.
Tell us all that in November. Don’t forget to write a diary about it on Kos.
The idea that Sanchez was going to miss the vote was silly, as is the idea that she will vote no. She’s a yes. If she gets a little confused, her sister Linda will straighten her out.
Pelosi has the votes. If Loretta needs a pass, and Pelosi has an extra vote or two, and Loretta thinks she needs a pass, she might get released, otherwise Sanchez is a yes. Believing otherwise is delusional. If Obama got Kucinich, Pelosi will have Loretta. Easy. There will be no Democratic NOs except Blue Dogs.
And don’t forget. This is not the first “Executive” Order that Obama has signed regarding women’s bodies: The first was to rescind the 11th hour Bush Conscience Clause that expanded Church. It was painted then as a major victory for women. It was not a victory.
It gave HHS “orders” to examine Conscience Clauses, after a 30 day public comment period. I never heard the new language come. Now I have with this bill. It extends the conscience clause to cover entities, insurance companies as a whole, not just the doctors or pharmacist. He extended corporate personhood in this bill in more ways than one. He got back to us alright!
He signed that first EO just prior to his speech at Notre Dame where he first started his rally cry for “common ground”. The EO trick for common ground should be coming clear to everyone by now. One would think.
You used the qualifier “regardless”. Now you say it “won’t help”. Make up your mind. Don’t you all get it by now, real progressives are not going to allow the history of the methodology and results of this bill to be rewritten.
And the man would not sign an “Executive” Order to stop the prosecution of DADT until it might be overturned. I remember the KOS talking point then: “It could slow down the process because the Republicans would lash out harder.”
Reason 60: “Regardless of whether it would help the large number of illegals, it would help the large number of uninsured”
They are mostly the same group, so the bill would not help them.

According to figures from the Pew Hispanic Center, 59 percent of undocumented immigrants, 29 percent of Latino documented residents, and 14 percent of Latino U.S. citizens are uninsured.
