Republicans, still not finished with their temper tantrum, have blocked committee hearings across the Senate today, invoking a little-known rule requiring unanimous consent to holding hearings after 2:00pm. Among the hearings cancelled is the confirmation of Goodwin Liu to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Pat Leahy released this statement:
Senate Republicans’ tactics of obstruction and delay know no limit. They have objected to reasonable timetables to consider President Obama’s qualified judicial nominees, and now they are objecting to allowing the Judiciary Committee to conduct hearings in connection with these nominations. Senate Republicans continue their ill-advised protest of meaningful health reform legislation by exploiting parliamentary tactics and Senate Rules, to the detriment of the American people and, in today’s instance, at the expense of American justice. I urge them to reconsider and allow this hearing to proceed as scheduled.
Don’t hold your breath.
Forgive me, but isn’t the solution here to schedule the hearing at 8:00 in the morning, and even if it looks like it’ll go past 2pm, to suspend it and carry it over to the next day?

Well,it’s not like it happened in a vacuum.
wisdom of powwow:
shekissesfrogs, if you haven’t already, you might want to read powwow’s diary, Anatomy of a Backroom Deal’s Public Face: The case for letting Congress do the legislating on health care reform.
not in a vacuum indeed.
if we’re going to have a reality-based discussion of congressional abuses, it will have to include the abuses by both parties.
I love powwow’s diaries and comments. I wish I had CSPAN so I could watch it.
I think all of the abuses should be laid bare without regard to party.
you don’t need cable tv to watch cspan. you can stream online or, if you have dialup and the video is too much bandwidth, listen to the audio only on the stream for cspan radio. here are some of the direct realplayer links i hope are of use to you:
cspan1
cspan2
cspan3
cspan radio
also, a while ago i made a webpage with lots of the direct realplayer links to cspan and the audio feeds for congressional hearing rooms that you might find helpful.
