The troubles of Sen. John Ensign have finally dawned on Republican leaders in Nevada. They realize that having a corrupt, indicted leader at a time when they’re trying to take down the state’s Democratic Senator with candidates who have embraced that same indicted figure would be devastating. So gradually, they’re backing away from Ensign.
Rep. Dean Heller kicked off what looked to be a coordinated effort today.
U.S. Rep. Dean Heller stopped short of calling for U.S. Sen. John Ensign’s resignation, but he said Wednesday his fellow Republican’s ethical woes are dragging him down and could end up harming the state’s GOP candidates in the fall.
“The fact we have a wounded junior senator, yeah, it is cause for concern,” Heller said.
“Will it have impact up and down the ticket for Republicans this fall? I think there is the potential for that happening,” he said on KRNV-TV’s “Nevada Newsmakers.”
Heller went so far as to say that he thought a “stronger voice” was needed in Washington, and that he declined to challenge Harry Reid because he feared the Ensign fallout would bring him down.
Similarly, two former Clark County GOP officials openly called for Ensign’s resignation. Clark County includes Las Vegas and the majority of the population of Nevada.
We are on the verge of great victory come November, but the most long awaited victory can quickly slip through our grasp unless we immediately put the focus back on conservative issues. We call on all true conservative Republican leaders and activists to speak out now for the resignation of Senator Ensign.
There is no uprising by Republicans to fight the barrage of anti-Ensign media. Nobody is coming to his rescue. Only a small handful of Republican candidates have even sought his endorsement.
Nor are the elected Republican leaders in Washington throwing any lifeline to Senator Ensign. While they are not publicly calling for his resignation, they are not supporting Ensign either. Let’s all stop ignoring the problem. The only way the Ensign-problem for the GOP will go away is if enough of us call for his resignation.
I suspect this will only get louder in subsequent days. The Nevada GOP is in serious self-preservation mode. This has less to do with Ensign’s conduct, which is deplorable, and more to do with the threat to victory in November. For that reason alone, Ensign may actually be held accountable for his conduct, a rare thing in the GOP.
…Atrios is absolutely right, it’s downright bizarre that nobody in the media seems to care about the Ensign scandal.

I get a kick out of the way Atrios uses “John Edwards” in his headlines
You mean it isn’t OKIYAR after all?
There will probably be a move to declare that Ensign is not a ‘real’ Republic. I hope he stands strong, if only for the entertainment value.
It still is OK but just don’t let people know you are paying off everybody and their husbands.
INOKTLIYAR
It’s NOT OK to lose if….
The funniest comment I saw on the Tiger Woods apology tour was “I’d come out with strippers, defiant as ever.”
No, there’s a nuance to the rule – It’s Not Okay if You’re a Repub Who Will Lose and Take Your Party Down With You.
Given Nevada’s governor, Jim Gibbons, behavior it may be that Ensign is just trying to figure out why he is being picked on. Nevada Republicans, it appears, have a lot of things to explain.
OT a little http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/08/power-struggle-inside-the_n_529884.htmlThe struggle for the souls of the Democratic Party a Huff post today reveals the in fight of Progressives versus Bluedogs. Huge donation are given with the hope of Progressive legislation only to support those who vote against it when elected.
Could someone do an extensive post on how this gets manipulated. The same things are occurring with well intended votes explained as… well it is not politically possible to do that kind of legislation. If it is not possible to live a decent life should we all accept homelessness? Like to see that post on the tools of manipulation in one post.
With so much sexcipades surrounding the Republics these days, their Christian supporters might come to realize that they are supporting a party that is only pretending to be religious.
Like Steele, I hope Ensign stubbornly tries to hang onto his seat, though that’s not fair to the people of Nevada. I would like to see him, as a convicted felon, forcibly expelled from the Senate and I would like his fellow Republican Senators’ votes on record for all to see.
The GOP just realized that Rep Mark Foley cost them an election? You know a scandal is bad when Michelle Malkin and Bay Buchanan both criticize a GOPer.
Senator Ensign though did straight sex the lobbyist thing for the husband however could involve prison time a sex scandal is the public reason the GOP wants Ensign gone.
Otherwise Diaper Dave Vitter should be out and Michael Steele.
Well, they’re already primarying Gibbons, and he’ll lose. But Ensign isn’t up for re-election this year, so he’s just a big problem sitting out there.
It’s gone now — bummer!
But yeah, it’s amazing how much effort is being made to kick the political corpse of a man who has been retired from politics for over two years and hasn’t held office in over five years, whereas a sitting Republican governor and one-time potential presidential candidate gets all but ignored in comparison.
Atrios has a wonderful wry sense of humor. I used to love his pony awards.
Elliott, I am confused. I went to the page and I don’t see “John Edwards” anywhere. Am I missing something? I scrolled all the way down the page…
EDIT: and the comments on the Ensign post are downright bizarre!
If the voters of Nevada are dumb enough to dump the Senate Majority Leader for a Republic with no seniority, they deserve no sympathy.
If only Ensign had run for vice president six years ago and was completely retired from politics.
Then, I tell, you, THEN, they’d pay attention.
Oh sorry, whenever he posts about Ensign, he uses John Edwards name in the title instead of John Ensign since the media is preoccupied with Edwards and oblivious to Ensign.
Look, Charlie Rangel is, in his own corrupt way, just as bad and the Democrats have shielded him very effectively. Nancy Pelosi did her considerable best on Rangel’s behalf. I really like what I’ve seen of Rangel, but the guy is beyond ethical redemption and should be sent home, at the least. He probably won’t be any time soon, so let’s not get too high handed about Ensign. Who’s a creep, for the record.
Someone on Dkos commented that she’s come to believe that far from being the exception, Ensign’s screwing off, on the taxpayers’ tab, of course, is a commonplace. Being caught out is the exception. I agree.
Your linked story encouraging him to resign so the rest of them could sail to victory was interesting but I think they forgot a vowel.
Reminds me of when I worked for the state. The mainframe based Payroll Machine System (PMS) was used by almost entirely female clerks in order for employees to get paid.
OK, thanks. Guess he changed it before I looked.
This is well worth a read for those who haven’t seen it:
Deconstructing the facade of John Ensign
Funny thing is, Ensign actually was one of the names being mentioned for the GOP in 2012. Look at the guy: He’s straight out of Central Casting. Very good-looking. He would have rocketed to the top of the lists if his mistress’ husband hadn’t pitched a bitch.
Getting a conservative pro-lifer out of a position of power in the party is a bad thing? Where are you from, dK?
All of our elites are pretending to be religious. Prayers, bootstraps (for picking ourselves up) hard work and suffering are for us proles.
Free money, sex (gay and straight – whatever their preference), drugs (Hookers and Blow) are for our elites while they preach “the gospel of long suffering, hard work and the love of Christ Jesus” to us for “our benefit”. Nothing but “Prayers” for the families of miners – murdered by capitalism.
Ensign, Sanford, Larry Craig, Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, the Pope and all the merry banksters come to mind.
Sigh, you’re probably right, and I have my concerns about Rangel as well.
I think the issue with Ensign is not just his screwing around, but:
1. The Republics are still touting themselves as the party of “family values” (whatever the fack that means anymore) and hold themselves out to have some sort of special dispensation from the big man upstairs.
2. Ensign was a big time supporter and initiator of impeaching Bubba Clinton for Clinton’s sexual escapades. At that time, Ensign blabbed all about his vaunted Republican family values. So, if Ensign’s so darn concerned about Bubba….
3. Ensign has more than sexcapades going on. He’s done some illegal financial shenanigans with the cuckholded hubby (not just mommy and daddy buying him off). That’s just plain wrong to have done a criminal act, and then get sit in the Senate large and in charge.
And so… the disgust level is there, especially because of the standard R hypocricy and double standards. Look, I know Ds are nearly as bad, but they tend to be slightly less hypocritical about all this junk. I could care less who Ensign played the hokey-pokey with (not my problem), but I do have an issue with a sitting Senator committing crimes (the hubby lobbying job crap) while on the job.
More than annoying and bloody typical of most R voters to turn their heads and look the other way.
Too true. It’s all a Kabuki show, esp the religulous junk. C Street is just a front for boys to do what the fack they want, and then somehow say that it’s ok for them, but not you for you and me, bc Jaysus said so.
Ensign, btw, is a big C Street dude. But of course, C Street has many Ds getting big handouts and cheap rent. Certainly not just an R thing.
They aren’t pretending to be devout or religious. They are practicing hypocrisy.
David, is your Magic Eight Ball sending you any forecasts of what might happen if Ensign did resign?
Does NV law allow Corrupt Republican Governors to name the replacement, or is an election required?
Does the “choice” [appointment vs. election] depend on the amount of time remaining in the Disgraced One’s term?
Given that any interim replacement will be just as bad and lack the baggage, it seems we’re much better off continuing with the badly wounded n-SIN as the senator. Just by remaining in office, n-SIN continues to hurt his fellow Repugs, both in the Senate and in Nevada. Even if Gibbons (rather than a successor who is cleaner than Gibbons) were to appoint a replacement, the replacement would be a lot cleaner than n-SIN, at least until the dirt is uncovered. Let them twist slowly in the wind.
Not really, Badwater.
The Christian Right is notoriously quick to forgive and forget, providing the one being forgiven is right-of-center. And, they don’t really seem to be all that concerned when one of their guys breaks a commandment.
Look at how many times Bush out-and-out lied. People in my Texas church were still four-square for the dude. They NEVER got over how he told that gathering of ministers that he “got down on his knees and prayed every day.” (Somehow it did not matter to them – although I constantly pointed it out – that it was a bunch of MINISTERS he was addressing. If it had been a bunch of plumbers, he would have said he played around with his sink pipes for recreation.)
Unfortunately, for the Christian Right, it’s not what you DO that counts; it’s what you SAY you do.
Charlie Rangel is a war hero, who served his country with everything he had. Ensign is a rich brat asshole! Big difference!
Sounds like you’re aware of Charlies’ story. Lots of courage and leadership in that guy while in Korea.
Too bad about his judgement as of late.
Rachel kicks his butt on a regular basis…
