A true tragedy and a political crisis in Poland:
A plane carrying the Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, and dozens of the country’s top political and military leaders crashed in a heavy fog in western Russia on Saturday morning, killing everyone aboard.
Television showed chunks of flaming fuselage scattered in a bare forest near Smolensk, where the president was arriving for a ceremony commemorating the murder of more than 20,000 Polish officers by the Soviet secret police after the Red Army invaded Poland.
The irony, noted above, is that they were headed to Russia to commemorate the Katyn massacre. As former President Aleksander Kwasniewski told Polish TV today, “It is a damned place.” The leader of the lower house of Parliament now takes over as President, but must call elections within 60 days.
As you can see, a substantial chunk of the political class was on the plane:
Among those on board, according to the Web site of the newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, were Mr. Kaczynski; his wife, Maria; former Polish president-in-exile Ryszard Kaczorowski; the deputy speaker of Poland’s parliament, Jerzy Szmajdzinski; the head of the president’s chancellery, Wladyslaw Stasiak; the head of the National Security Bureau, Aleksander Szczyglo; the deputy minister of foreign affairs, Andrzej Kremer; the chief of the general staff of the Polish army, Franciszek Gagor; the president of Poland’s national bank, Slawomir Skrzypek; the commissioner for civil rights protection, Janusz Kochanowski; the heads of all of Poland’s armed forces; and dozens of members of parliament.
Kaczynski has an identical twin brother who runs the conservative Law and Justice Party he represented as President and who used to serve as Prime Minister.
In a statement, President Obama called the loss “devastating.”

I am sure it was not a conspiracy. Has Underwear Bomber been set free yet?
The Katyn massacre
My Polish half went numb after reading this.
Haven’t they suffered enough? And why the hell were so many high ranking people together on one plane, the one which has been giving trouble to boot!
um, but WTF were all these high-ranking officials doing on one bloody flight?
Best wishes to the people of Poland. This is a genuine tragedy.
Sorry to nitpick and intending no disrespect to anyone, particularly the people of Poland who have my deepest sympathy. I do not believe this is an example of irony. Tragic coincidence seems more applicable.
Sadly, this is not the first Polish leader to die in a plane crash. Probably no country (other than Russia) suffered as much as Poland during WWII.
How horrifying.
It’s true – there are some places too blood soaked to go near.
Another bright victory for free market capitalism and the Chicago School of economics. When you starve the beast, your government flies in ancient planes.
Former Prime Minister Leszek Miller, who survived a helicopter crash in 2003, told Polish news he had long predicted such a disaster.
“I once said that we will one day meet in a funeral procession, and that is when we will take the decision to replace the aircraft fleet,” he said.
Also on the plane was Ania Walentynowicz, the “Rosa Parks” of Poland who started, inside the shipyard, the Solidarity Strike at Gdansk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Walentynowicz
Perhaps the most tragic loss is the Central Bank Governor Slawomir Skrzypek, who stabilized the zloty, and has created the strongest economy in Eastern Europe while Hungary, Czech Rep, Slovakia, & Ukraine decline and Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia collapse. The economic recovery in EE and EU are substantially dependent on the handling of Poland’s economy. It’s a critical point now.
All our prayers and condolences to the dead and their loved ones. Strange, if the murder of those people had not happened so many years ago, perhaps these people would not have died going to that site. It seems that all people, no matter how self righteous, have blood on their hands.
Thus illustrating just one weakness of a caste system.
I remember, all during WWII (yes, I’m old enough to remember, but I was in school then) being told that the Nazis had perptrated this attrocity. It wasn’t until much later, the true culprits were proved to be the Russians. Of course, that was when ‘Uncle Joe’ was an ally.
There is an excellent Polish movie “Katyn”. Netflix has it.
And remember, when political figures die in a plane crash, it’s ALWAYS a tragedy (and it is) but it’s NEVER a conspiracy. Whether this horrid event, or Wellstone’s death, or that of Robert Kennedy, or Mel Carnahan, suggesting that some group might have conspired to bring these aircraft down just marks you as a ghoulish conspiracy nut.
It would be interesting to see the deaths-per-passenger-miles of political figures versus average travellers.
And how soon after the Kyrgystan government collapse? I.e. former Soviet satellites.
I was in Poland for almost a week this past October. I really felt comfortable there (I’m an American Jew of Polish ancestry), and I’d like to go back this summer for the International Chopin Piano Competition.
Plane crashes and coal mine explosions and earthquakes are on my mind. The nuclear arms treaty is the only thing positive I can think of.
Question: was this the Polish government that volunteered to host CIA torture black site prisons?
Or just the successor government that kept all details except air traffic records a state secret?
Or did they set an example and come clean?
Dear Starbuck. Let me talk to your Polish side for just a minute or two. I think your said something imbecilic about polish suffering. Gee, when the viciously anti-Semitic poles were killing Jewish men, women, and children before, during, and, yes, after the Holocaust, that was OK? Did you know there was a major pogrom committed by the Poles against the Jewish survivors of the death camps when they came back to their pre-war homes in Poland? So I guess Polish suffering is terrible, but the suffering the Poles inflicted on the Jews is acceptible and OK. A pox on your house.

Your ignorance is showing. Why in the world would a person claiming to be of Jewish ancestry want to go to a country which is for all intents and purposes a huge Jewish graveyard? Did you stop off at Auschwiitz? I don’t think many Jews felt comfortable there!

Dear Fellow Canines:
Apologies all around.
