Just a couple great stories where students show themselves to be far slicker and more clever than politicians, and better reporters than the traditional media.
Mike Huckabee gave an interview to The Perspective, a magazine out of the College of New Jersey, where the former Arkansas governor compared gay marriage to polygamy, incest and drug abuse. After The Perspective published a story, Huckabee released through his PAC a snide, dismissive statement saying that the college student who interviewed him has no future in journalism:
The young college student hopefully will find a career other than journalism. I would ask that he release the unedited tape of our conversation. I believe that what people do as individuals in their private lives is their business, but I do not believe we should change the traditional definition of marriage. Not only did he attempt to sensationalize my well known and hardly unusual views of same-sex marriage, he also inaccurately reported my views on Michael Steele as GOP chairman – I offered my support and didn’t “Rip into Steele” as his article asserted. I had a candid and frank conversation with the group about health care, education, the economy and national security while the young journalism student, instead, chose to focus on the issue of same-sex marriage and grossly distort my views.
In response, The Perspective took the bet, released the statement and stood firmly by their reporting. As well they should – they described it completely accurately. While other outlets might let a snake like Huckabee get away with his criticism of the reporting as part of a controversy, the Perspective merely called Huckabee’s bluff – and won.
Even more interesting is the story of Sarah Palin’s scheduled speech at Cal State-Stanislaus. From the moment it was announced, students at the school demanded to know who scheduled and funded the speech, estimated at close to $100,000. They kept digging and digging, and they eventually found the contract for the speech – in a dumpster.
The document found in a campus Dumpster does not include her compensation for the June 25 speech to the CSU Stanislaus Foundation.
It does specify other requirements to be provided by the foundation, including round-trip, first-class airfare for two, a suite and two rooms at a deluxe hotel and transportation via SUVs or black town cars.
It also requires that Palin’s lectern be stocked with water bottles and bendable straws.
State Senator Leland Yee and advocacy groups were previously denied this information – the students found it. As Yee explains in a statement, they discovered foundation documents intermixed with the collegiate documents, which would violate state law:
“It is truly shocking and a gross violation of the public trust that such documents would be thrown away and destroyed during a pending investigation,” said Yee. “Found within the same files as regular university business were financial statements and documents of the CSU Stanislaus Foundation – demonstrating that the foundation is operated by taxpayer-funded employees within the university itself. How can they possibly claim that no tax dollars are being used for the Palin event when state employees are called in on their furlough day to help avoid public scrutiny?”
The students blew the lid off a real story of misuse of public funds.
Maybe we shouldn’t worry about this “death of journalism” after all.

About FDL News Desk
If anyone’s trying to kill journalism it’s the six media conglomerates who stole America’s airwaves and national identity. No one cares about the Tiger Woods story. Media conglomerates just kept pushing the story because it allowed them to ignore the real news. We’re witnessing a coup. Concentrate media ownership and refuse to cover anything but trivial bullshit. The result: the masses have no real news. That’s the goal. They don’t want us to have any real journalism. They want something like the 9/11 Commission or the Warren Commission which acts like investigators, but ultimately does none of the real uncovering. We need a more robust national public media outlet to rival the oligopoly currently in control of all our minds/culture.
I agree; no one cares about the Tiger Woods story.
My household is one of the 800,000 that have rejected cable TV. I watch news on my computer. I am not going to pay the MSM to watch them sell me things, while they get paid by the sellers too. Talk about double dipping. I get movies. I read more. Just finished Catherine De Medici: Renaissance Queen of France. Excellent read. The number of folks who are just fed up with the slop that pours out of the idiot box is increasing.
WTF did cHuckabee think? That they wouldn’t DARE release the tape that totally backed them up and disputed cHuckabee’s account? Wingers and recording equipment don’t get along….
Hah Rachel is covering this now…. great!!
We feel that same-sex marriage, laws prohibiting gays and lesbians from adopting children, and ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ are legitimate policy concerns about which to question national political figures.
Line em’ up. Top to bottom.
Rachel Maddow covering this even now.
Truth teller..
Gotcha!! a ST Paulie Girl please…..
(:>))♥♥
she did tear him a new one… Ahh the wingnuts..
c(_) Best I can do is a cup of coffee…. ;-)
tay… Peets??
Luckly, that’s all they found in the dumpster that they thought was worth reporting on.
Update, in NYT via AP:
Please call the WAHHHHmbulance right away. K?
Doesn’t seem to occur to this man that the students have a right to know where their money is going and how much it is. Money that could be used to lower tuition etc.
This is really interesting. If they are smart they will get on the horn to some wingnut donors and ask that they underwrite the whole thing. If they are smart. If they are stupid they will keep denying it and spend time focusing on the “dumpster” aspect of this.
You know I really should offer my services to people who get in the middle of a wingnut storm, they need to help and the mainstream media is not going to help them. They will let the he said she said nature of the “controversy” become the whole story.
If Michael Moore is charging 100,000 for speaking and the school is laying off staff then they shouldn’t be paying him that much either.
Hey Teddy, did you get my email about maybe going to the tea party in SF tomorrow? It would be fun! The last tea party in SF I sent a bunch of info about the host to the Chron so that they would at least ask him some real questions about his radical views, this time he is not going to be there so I’m going to go and ask a few of the questions the press never ask.
*waving at Spocko*
Live Long And Pester, dood!
Back later – must attend to dinner.
where the former Arkansas governor compared gay marriage to polygamy, incest and drug abuse.
What no bestiality? What a slacker that Huckabee is. Chuck Norris would be appalled.
The students blew the lid off a real story of misuse of public funds.
Go students!!!
Have you ever listened to Huckabee’s unctuous commentaries? They are trying to turn him into the new folksy Paul Harvey. (BTW Paul Havey dying was a good send for the radio networks, they didn’t have to pay him anymore. His kid tried to pretend to be his dad, ‘Hey I have the same last name! It’s just like having my dad!” But they said no.
If you read these entertainer contracts it is astonishing how much money they make and all the weird clauses. I wish I had a copy of some entertainers contracts to see if they have morality clauses.
I steer clear of those events, Spocko, but please let us know how it goes!
I’m simply unable to contain my anger at their ignorance and stupidity.
Have fun!
Seems to me the university president crossed the line into serious defamation territory when he accused the students of burglary in this case.
Contrast these examples of the proper function of journalism with James O’Keefe’s hatchet job on ACORN. Since the discrediting of O’Keefe’s little videos, by people like Rachel, there’s been nary a peep out of Fox News regarding the destruction of ACORN by lies. Of course journalism as lying is the Right’s approach to the dissemination of information in America today. It was the full light of day, as it were, that brought the Pimpster’s hack methods to our attention. Because the approach to journalism exhibited by these students was basically sound, the light of day only strengthened their reporting. Kids show the way! We in the Progressive community should trumpet the hell out of this.
Wasn’t Fred Thompson supposed to take over for Paul Harvey? Perfect job for Fred, probably involved about 45 minutes a work a day. Instead he had to up and run (ok, walk) for president in 2008.
