Jerry Brown put it best yesterday – “Meg Whitman isn’t just happy buying commercial breaks, now she’s trying to buy the newscasts, too.”
In fact, Whitman is offering video news releases of her speeches, in an effort to manage all media appearances rather than face the press. Even in media-poor California, this is starting to wear thin. It’s rare enough for a local news station to even use the word “politics,” so clearly this got under KPIX San Francisco’s skin.
But while they may be offended, if these VNRs didn’t come with some controversy, a lot of stations would bite at this. You have no idea how much of your local news is packaged this way. Station budgets are tiny, and reporters are scarce. If a station doesn’t have to send a crew to a Whitman event, and can instead get the footage plopped into their lap, they’ll be sure to run it – and they won’t add much context to it, either. This would guarantee favorable coverage for Whitman across the state. Which is all she wants – the ability to run a gubernatorial campaign without those pesky questions and reporters.
The brutal efficiency of Whitman’s tycoon-led campaign, with its focus on marketing and media management over anything substantive, is kind of jarring. This must be what it’s like to live under Silvio Berlusconi in Italy.
Of course, it would have a chance of failing if her Democratic opponent bothered to articulate a vision for what he wanted to do as Governor.

About FDL News Desk
With the Greens we have either Deacon Alexander or Laura Wells. As Wells’s site says:
But, hey, David, if you want to give free publicity to the candidates of the status quo, then maybe you deserve the status quo.
Still my favorite explanation for why Meg decided to run for Governor.
Looking for love in all the wrong place.
Speaking of retired people’s amusements, got this one the other day.
Moonbeam is 72, and has as much of an articulated plan as Halter. Seems to be a D disease.
The TeeVee stations can pay for her “service” eventually (because it’s the free market, right?) using PayPal… conveniently owned, by… wait for it..
Meg Whitman!
ROTFLMAO!!!!
Judging from what I see on our local station my guess is about 85%. We have talking hairdos that seem to do not much of anything other than puff pieces on local establishments who probably don’t want to pay for advertising. Oh, and the occasional house fire or car wreck. That’s about it. The Savannah Daily Disappointment isn’t much better, and about 95% of their content is AP feed. News? What’s that?
Fine then our side should send copies of our speeches to and demand the same amount of air time.
If we are smart we can wait until she does a speech and then have our candidate point out where she is wrong.
The Lefty Blogs can help we are very good at fact checking instantly with the google.
Laura Wells is against the 2/3 rule for tax hikes. Where does Jerry Brown stand on this?
Just how is Meg Whitman doing in the polling, on the issues, any scandals yet? Voting Districts get redrawn with the Census soon the GOP needs to win big at the State Level or voting districts will get redrawn and the House could go our way big with expected jumps in minority populations.
Meg’s canned video presentations are the new wave. Look for more of this kind of “campaigning” in the future. The Supremes have guaranteed that politicians will be bought with unlimited corporate funding. Republican rhetoric can no longer withstand scrutiny on any level – it can only be sold to the public – if no one can question it.
Any questioning destroys their timeworn rhetoric. All their policies have failed.
Cut taxes and raise more revenue – enough to get California on budget – that’s absurd.
Cut taxes and create more jobs? We’ve cut taxes for years already. Where are the jobs? Outsourced.
Shouldn’t American companies that produce products with outsourced labor and materials be taxed more than local companies?
Republican BS cannot withstand any questioning on any level.
Video bits are the wave of the future.
Seconded!
I agree with your premise. Why don’t liberal websites feature third party candidates and pretty much ignore these R and D doofuses? Everyone says third parties dont’ stand a chance. Well, of course they don’t, if sites keep going on and about R’s and D’s and teabaggers and Sarah Palin. I would love it if recognized sites would start inroducing us to some good candidates all around the country. Maybe the candidates would get some air time on “liberal” shows like Olbermann and Maddow. It’s worth a try.
David, I like this story on Meg Whitman–it’s interesting–but Cassiodorus has a point. Additionally, at this point I’m so sick of bloggers telling me how bad the teasbaggers are, I only scan the comments just to see if anyone is getting as PO’ed about the same old “teabagger bad” story as I am. I do appreciate all the work FDL does, but is it possible to see news that features third party candidates in the future?
Sorry Racists will always get the the Shiv from Lefty Blogs. They never said a thing about Bush but now they are upset about Obama? Why Obama’s Presidency is Bush’s third term.
Do they have any ideas which would work? Cutting taxes for the rich won’t create jobs Bush proved that.
Anyone who didn’t support Obama during the primaries was a racist. Anyone who didn’t support him in the general was a racist. Anyone who doesn’t support him in his Presidency is a racist. Jesus, don’t you get tired of playing the same stupid tune. There are indeed rank racists in this country, but I wouldn’t trust you to identify them.
God how I wish we had some new blood in the Democratic party in California. Sadly it appears the old guard is going to hang on until they are all 90 or older. Also limits to the number of terms a State Senator or a State Representative can serve has seriously depleted the bench. I fear we are going to see more and more of the likes of Whitman and Schwarzenegger, gazillionaires that have no clue about government, only in it to assuage their bloated egos. I pray that Brown can win in this kind of popularity contest…
Once again, Laura Wells has stepped up to the plate and suggested we scrap the 2/3 rule for tax hikes. And I rather doubt Meg Whitman would be able to push further tax cuts through a Democrat legislature — it’s not going to happen in this political climate.
So are we going to wait until they start shutting down CSU campuses before we listen to the Greens?
