I noticed with alarm that some of my friends on the left evinced a certain amount of sympathy for Lindsey Graham. They said that he worked really, really hard on an energy bill, was committed to the policy, only to have immigration cut the line for political purposes. I wonder how they’ll react to his vow to filibuster the bill he’s reportedly so invested in unless Harry Reid drops the OTHER bill he’s leading the charge on entirely.
Earlier today, Reid appeared to reverse course, saying climate/energy would be the next logical issue to address, followed only afterward by immigration reform. So everything’s groovy, right?
Far from it. Tonight, Graham told me that he will filibuster his own climate change bill, unless Reid drops all plans to turn to immigration this Congress [...]
Graham has said for days that he’s dropped out of climate/energy talks, but pressed tonight, he said that he will filibuster his own bill if Reid tries to bring it up without tabling immigration altogether.
“If they can do this without me, go ahead…. I am not going to be part of an energy-climate process that has no hope of success,” Graham said. “I am not going to let that happen with my vote.”
Aside from this development showing just how unserious Graham is about moving these policies forward, consider that, as a power broker on energy, immigration, or closing Guantanamo, Graham was a miserable failure. He did not move one member of his own party to his side at all, including himself, apparently. Furthermore, on the climate and energy bill he created a Frankenstein’s monster that only an oil company could support. Why am I supposed to shed a tear that his feelings are hurt?
The LA Times surveys the record and finds that Graham is primarily concerned with being a big macker inside Washington without having to actually vote out of lockstep with his party (94% of the time with the majority of Republicans in this Congress). It works because “liberal” dupes inside Washington give him the benefit of the doubt. Waiting on them to recognize their error would waste a good decade or two, so I won’t.

Sorry for the OT, but Bush craziness is never OT. In her forthcoming memoir, Laura suggests she & W may have been poisoned at German G8 summit.
Furthermore, on the climate and energy bill he created a Frankenstein’s monster that only an oil company could support. Why am I supposed to shed a tear that his feelings are hurt?
I think you’ve answered it right there. Graham is being used as cover to try and enact corporatist legislation. The corporatist Dems always have to find some sort of cover in hopes of not being blamed for the horrid legislation they attempt to foist upon us. If the Democrats didn’t have Graham, then they’d find themselves in a situation like with the PO where they showed themselves to be a bunch of liars, but with Graham they can blame working with him for making the legislation so crappy.
Yeah, he OD’d on looove potion, and made casual overtures to Chancellor Merkle …
How could they tell?
As for Huckleberry Drama Queen, he must really be feeling the heat from the ALIPAC effort to out him as apparent punishment for not being tough enough on undocumented migrant workers.
Graham’s “climate bill” is a terrible, which should come as no surprise after HCR. But his determined effort to keep immigration off the table is because, if this is a central issue heading into November, the Dems will retain control of Congress and Graham’s party can’t have that.
*My friends here will laugh at the notion, that Dems have control of Congress in the first place.*
Now, Michele Bachmann would have had no problem swapping places with Angela Merkel. At least until he tried to kiss her.
Also worth noting: The Arizona and Texas Goopers are blaming Obama for his failure to address immigration, saying that’s why they’re having to go all Nazi “Papieren, bitte” on it.
And in Washington, the national Goopers are filibustering (okay, threatening, but in today’s DC that’s the same thing without any actual inconvenience) immigration reform.
Good thing we don’t expect the wingers to make sense.
There’s another thing complicating the immigration efforts: He’s being openly threatened over it by a group who wants him to take a hardline stance.
Yeah, probly on Angela Merkle’s orders in an act of revenge for touching her in that demeaning way he did on camera that time. Punishment for her having to watch that clip at any moment.
There’s also the angle of Graham wanting no part of an immigration vote this summer to protect his pal John McCain.
WOW … take the “L” out of ALIPAC and waddya get ?!!
It really says something when Lou Dobbs thinks you’re out of line …
The one-ups-manship between W. and Dad never ends.
Not only McCain but every ReThug running in November would face an uphill battle … and that is exactly what the Dems need to retain control of Congress.
Lindsey was called out for being Gay by his own side so forget about him cooperating with us the guy is going to run so far to the Right/Back in the Closet he is going to be Right of the Tea Baggers and just behind J Edgar Hoover.
The GOP not us as we were accused of doing has blackmailed him.
OT – I thought Jane would get a kick out this, another fine mess by the
Susan G. Komen for the Cure:
As for Angela Merkel possibly poisoning W: you go, gal. Poor Merkel is stuck having to cringe and shudder every time she thinks of that incredibly demeaning event, not to mention having W touch her. UGH.
I had no love lost for Lindsey’s purported plight. Feh. I figured that whatever it was that Lindsey helped to write would be a steaming pile anyway. If his alleged feelings are “hurt,” like: whatever. It’s all just part of the ongoing Kabuki show signifying that no one, absolutely no one, in Congress has any interest in or intention to do anything at all in any way to solve or resolve the major and pressing issues facing this country. As long as they’re making money from K Street…. the country be damned.
I could not believe the bizarre Let Me Finish tongue kiss Matthews gave Graham yesterday. Can we say total disconnect from Lindsay’s actions belying his words?
If the Dems are Lucy, Matthews eagerly curls up into the football.
Census is coming up the GOP needs to win big or voting districts get redrawn to favor us.
*My friends here will laugh at the notion, that Dems have control of Congress in the first place.*
It’s not that they haven’t had control, it’s what they’ve done with it. It’s actually been the Congressional Dems who have lied about not having control so that they use that as an excuse. The Congressional Dems wrecked a once in a generation opportunity when they had enormous control.
Bmas has a fresh cross-post up: George Will Goes Bipolar Over Brown
Mathews and Lindsey are both self hating Gay’s Mathews comments about how Manly Bush looked in his flight suit stepping off the jet to declare Mission Accomplished could not have been gayer.
Prairie Sunshine !
Now I’ve gotta check out that video …
TCU !
Thanks for that image of Commander Codpiece … no Lunch for me, thank you ! *g*
Isn’t Graham that sorry son of a bitch Rahm’s go to guy? Why would Rahm’s judgment be any better on that than everything else he has fucked up?
One ancillary benefit of the Dem woodshedding in November will be the drying up of Village articles on what a genius Rahm is.
How screwed up has politics become that it’s totally normal for a Senator to FILIBUSTER legislation he claims to like because he doesn’t like the order in which it is coming up for debate.
I can make an almost prophetic statement that this current congress and current president are going to go down in history as the worst in the history of the country. The reason is simple. They are systematically destroying the freedoms that we were founded on. I know the constitutional mantra of the democrats for all their actions is “promote the general welfare.” However, it does not say “provide the general welfare.” There is a big difference. Now I do agree that there needs to be reform on a wide array of issues. Unfortunately, we have lost freedoms with the Health Care Reform Act and we will only be able to rectify that massive mistake after the congress and the new president in 2012. The new health care reform bill should retain some of the good things of the current bill, mainly allowing young adults to stay on their parents insurance until age 26. Furthermore, I think that the key to health care reform for the currently uninsurable is government subsidy to high risk clients. If you can tell the insurance they will not take an hit to the bottom line they will be willing to take on more high risk individuals. You have to remember that insurance companies are in the business of risk assessment and risk management for a profit. To demand that they take on high risk clients without some chance of remaining financially viable. This single tenet would satisfy both the conservative desire to retain the sanctity of American freedoms by keeping the government out of the lives of individuals, keeping a huge industry intact to help prevent a period of massive company closures and huge unemployment numbers (which will be an effect of the current bill). It will also satisfy the desire of liberals to see that everyone has the opportunity to get insurance (which I think is a noble and necessary goal). Next is financial reform, the government should not involve itself in the economic system other than to protect the laborers and the consumers. Take the current case the SEC has brought against Goldman Sachs. They are attempting to apply 2010 standards to something that happened in 2007. This is not only illogical but immoral. You add to that the fact that Goldman Sachs did not actually break a law and is being dragged through the ringer to bolster an emotional outrage against Wall Street so that Obama and his fellow democrats can further their goal of communizing America. Also if you look at the root causes of this recession 1) The Community Re-investment Act (CRA) forced lenders to give loans to unqualified borrowers (i.e. borrowers that did not have to provide proof of income and proof of residency etc) this created the tool of sub-prime mortgages. Banks and other lending agencies realized that these sub-prime mortgages and forced loans to unqualified borrowers were and still are toxic they sold them to Fannie May and Freddie Mac (which are government institutions). Fannie and Freddie then packaged as a tool that could be sold on Wall Street. All Goldman Sachs did was play both sides of the field. If a person were to put a bet for his favorite team with one bookie and against his team with another should he be brought before Congress, I don’t think so. I think that financial reform should allow for more stringent rules on the rating systems so that tools such as mortgage backed derivatives and make it absolutely clear that the government will never again bail out a company for their risky behavior. The precedent that was set in 2007 must never be allowed to happen again. The next major issue will be immigration. We must protect the borders and by extension the constitutional rights of citizens and legal residents. If the Federal government refuses to do this then the responsibility falls to the states. However, I do think that it should be handled at the Federal level. Such reform should deal with effectively and permanently sealing both the southern and northern border. Institute a program where illegals pay a stiff penalty in both monetary terms and in terms of community service. The penalties should be stiff enough to weed out those individuals that are not here for reasons consistent with American values but lax enough to permit those that want to make a better life for themselves and their families. While they are paying these penalties they would be granted probationary visas. While they are here on a probationary status if they commit a crime above a class b misdemeanor (arbitrary starting point) their visas would be revoked and they would be faced with extradition to their country of origin. For those persons that were brought to this country without making the conscious choice themselves (i.e. children) they would be granted a probationary visa for the term of five years pursuant to good behavior they would then be granted a full visa and could apply for citizenship. While this is similar to the “amnesty” position of many liberal elements in this country it differs in the major regard that it is not a free handout or entitlement. People that are here illegally should be made to pay a price for their transgressions. Simultaneously, we need to reform the visa process to make it quicker, more affordable and more streamlined. This country has a rich heritage of contributions made by legal immigrants to this country. The American Industrial Revolution was started and propagated by legal immigrants and to deny the contributions that legal immigrants can make would be a grave mistake. The next major effort of this administration will be to enact a comprehensive climate control bill. The main tenet of this bill will be and always has been the cap and trade/cap and tax. This clause would be disastrous to American business because it would force companies to buy a non-tangible commodity which would force them either out of the country or to raise their prices dramatically. This would have the effect of destroying our economy more than it already has been. A true reform would be for the government to promote new clean technology and allow companies to make a profit from marketing those new products. The private sector has and always will be able to research and bring to the market place new technology much quicker and for less than the government could ever dream of.
All of this begs the question why is this administration insistent on destroying or subjugating huge portions of our lives while lying to the American people that they will be beneficial and have no negative impact on our economy and way of life.
Couple of great lines in this post David.
I’m glad others are peeking under the sheets of Graham’s energy bill. Personally, I’d prefer to see it die rapidly and permanently.
