The ACLU has issued a warning about travel to Arizona,
The nation’s top civil liberties group on Wednesday issued travel alerts for Arizona, saying the state’s new law cracking down on illegal immigrants could lead to racial profiling and warrantless arrests.
American Civil Liberties Union affiliates in Arizona, New Mexico and 26 other states put out the warnings in advance of the Fourth of July weekend. The Arizona chapter has received reports that law enforcement officers are already targeting some people even though the law doesn’t take effect until July 29, its executive director said.
The alerts are designed to teach people about their rights if police stop and question them.
The Arizona law requires police, while enforcing other laws, to question a person’s immigration status if officers have a reasonable suspicion that the person is in the country illegally. It also makes it a state crime for legal immigrants to not carry their immigration documents and bans day laborers and people who seek their services from blocking traffic on streets.
Here is the problem. When the new Arizona law takes effect you can be arrested and jailed if you do not have clear proof of US citizenship on your person at all times. A driver’s license is not proof of citizenship.
Though the law is clearly intended to harass people who look like they might be from Central and South America, Arizona authorities will attempt to avoid accusations of “profiling” (picking out people of color for harassment) by occasionally stopping and arresting people who do not look Hispanic, claiming they might be here from Canada or an Asian country. They will likely jail sufficient numbers to provide cover for accusations of profiling. This means that, while Hispanic-appearing people will receive the most harassment, everyone else will also be at risk of harassment and arrest at any time.
Crooks & Liars has a great deal more, and concludes, “Pretty nasty state of affairs Arizona is cooking up in the desert.”

Apparently, no matter what you look like, the only way to be sure you won’t be detained is to stay out of Arizona.
You’d think it wouldn’t be hard to get an injunction, since all you have to do is show that letting the law taking effect puts people in danger (which it does because cops who are harassing people can’t protect them, and neighborhoods that don’t trust cops are less safe.) I’m hoping anyway.
Just thought I would as a couple of thoughts on this ‘generic’ behavior.
First, it’s been a longstanding amongst us Spanish-speaking folks that the “growers” are actually Republicans. Of course, this goes way back to the days of Cesar Chavez. In Arizona, and which provided the ‘security apparatus’ for Chavez and his family, was Labor Local 183, and we could never get them to admit to creating this joke, but it cotinues to this day. Thus, 85% of all vegetables consumed in the USA are imported into the USA and from Mexico. Yet, unrecognized is the notional that many political cognoscenti have some of the financial investments in some of these vegetable farms in mexico. When I say ‘farms’ is saying this as an understatement.
Secondly, when it comes to “secure the border” the final determinat or ‘decision-maker’ will be Arizona’s Republican Jan Brewer. Thusly, there can be no CIR until Brewer signs off. And if you don’t believe me, you need only to check in with both of Arizona’s two Senators, John McCain and Jon Kyl, for your confirmation.
Thirdly, we in the Spanish-speaking community, are only asking that the Democrats take CIR onto both the House and Senate floor, and followed by a vote. If so, we can then determine for ourselves, who in the Democratic Party is willing to continue to be our “political allies”. And many Democratic candidates have convinced themselves that they can dismiss the Hispanic voter while in search of Republican votes in their re-election effort. And unlike Grover Norquist, we don’t have anyone in our political community requiring candidates sign a “non-compete” agreement when searcing for these Republican votes. Of course this “agreement” can become an alternative for future consideration.
And finally, I have to pull myself up by the bootstraps in order to post here on any immigration thread, otherwise, having to support “progressives” in their distaste or dislike for the bigots and racists, is a must. Together, we can change America for the better, so if I come across as frustrated, exasperated, and even somewhat disgusting, you will know where my animus originates. Therefore, I will slowly extricate myself for posting almost exclusively on threads pertaining to immigration.
And yet, I am reminded on a daily basis, that Congressman Raul Grijalva had his life threatened, and his staffers have had their lives threatened for espousing a boycott of Arizona. In contrast, State Senator Russell Pearce, the author, one among many, has not had his life or the lives of his families threatened, and which speaks volumes for a consumate behavior for self-restraint among the many CIR advocates in Arizonam and myself included.

Why don’t we just go ahead and dissolve the borders? That’s what everybody here seems to really want.

You’re wrong!
You confuse the geographical boundaries with the boundaries that restrict human interaction between languages and cultures. And if you don’t believe me, Native Americans are segregated to the Rez, and our public schools do not do bi-lingualism relative to Native American languages and cultures, regardless of what you think that “brown people” are inherently demanding, and of course, that is Respect as well as “empowering the individual” within the Democratic Coalition. And that’s why Democrats have a lousy track record when the non-existent attention span is directed at these Languages and Cultures here in the USA. To wit, Native Americans are part and parcel to the “backbone” that comprises the Democratic Coaltion.
And TalkingStick said it profoundly by asking of anyone who will listen, this the Question: “What is your problem with colors?”
