The cloture vote on the conference report for the financial reform bill will happen this morning, with passage expected by noon. Republicans will have to decide if they want the entire 30 hours of post-cloture time at that point. If they do, the bill wouldn’t get final passage until Saturday, and Harry Reid looks prepared to stay until then to make that happen. My suspicion is that the Republicans will allow a final vote tomorrow and make it out of town for the weekend.
Also tomorrow, the Senate will hear about a new member, as West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin will announce an interim replacement. He or she won’t be installed until early next week, but Reid is already anticipating that by scheduling a procedural vote on the standalone unemployment benefits extension for next Tuesday.
“If Governor Manchin does what he has indicated to me he will, and we’ll have a new senator to replace Sen. Byrd, then we’ll vote Tuesday morning sometime on the unemployment extension,” Reid said.
The majority leader has been forced to wait for Byrd’s replacement because Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) declared his opposition to the bill before the Fourth of July recess and a GOP “no” vote could not be flipped.
It’s unclear if they’ll get unanimous consent and just pass that bill after hopping past the cloture vote, or if Republicans will delay the final passage just to draw things out. Wait, did I say unclear? Clear, is what I meant. So by the end of the week, benefits will be extended. But a new tier will not be created by the bill, meaning that the 99ers are on their own. And they increasingly make up a large portion of the jobless.
New jobless claims did drop today to 429,000.

Meanwhile poll after poll shows that Americans like this dreck even less than they approved of the Health Care Reform debacle. The Ds seem to have some sort of political death wish.
Win a couple of battles and lose the war.
Unemployed for two years? Fuck you. Thanks, Dems!
More band-aids.
“Someone’s got to do something.”
99 weeks of unemployment is such an arbitrary number. Why not 120 or 300? Who’s to say?
The needy need to eat and pay their rent too.
Gee, you know, TARP was like a giant unemployment check for the banksters. The Republicans and Democrats had no problem passing that one pronto. And I think that one will last more than 99 weeks. What party did you say controlled the White House, Senate, and House? If you said the Corporate Party you would be 100% correct. Let’s face it: the Democrats don’t have the slightest clue how to get American back on the right track.
Let’s face it: neither party is even slightly interested in the “small” people. Both parties are only doing the bidding of their real “masters,” which are the corporations. Bail out for banks and Wall ST?? You betcha! Unemployment for the serfs? Eat **** and die!
Hey taxpayers: pay up for Dick Cheney’s Frankenstein operations, but if your granny’s in the same boat as him??? Why it’s time for the death panel for granny bc she’s only a “small” person. Dick Cheney, aka Master of the Universe, gets to have his ultra-expensive operations on the tax payer dollars, otherwise known as socialized health care. Socialized health care is only “ok” if you’re super wealthy; then it’s great to rip off taxpayers for your benefit.
And so: on it goes….
The American dream is just that: a dream.
No summer recess without extension of unemployment benefits. No excuses, no exceptions and if the repugs threaten filibuster, let them stand on that floor and tell all the world why they do not support the bill. It is time to make them pay the price and take responsibility for their NO NO NO position on all issues. I can’t stomach Sharron Angle, so I can’t threaten to vote for Harry’s opponent, but I sure would like to see someone else as Majority leader, like Bernie Sanders (he’s an independent, I know) so how about Chuck Schumer or that lady from CA. Pelosi is making the House rock, Boxer could do the same for the Senate.
I think we need to empower ourselves by calling or emailing the (REP’s) Senates in our state and telling them, we will not vote for any (REP)
in Nov. we have Millions of vote’s they want in Nov. to take control
so why done we use our power call or email them today before the VOTE.
Show them that if they don’t care about the Poor or the Mid-class, we don’t care about them, they where the one’s who got us into this Mess and the DEM’s are busy just trying to get us out of it even with the REP’s
filibuster and their NO NO NO position on all issues, which makes great Bill into so Bill, just remember the REP’s are hoping we will forget
come NOV what they have done to us now and in the Pass and that if they get into control again Thing like SS, Medicare, Medicaid and Healthcare will be thing of the passed alone with the Mid Class in the USA.
Call and email now before they vote, you have to be tied of be used as a ping pong ball.
Thanks for your time
