WiFi has seemed to come around here in Las Vegas, allowing me to deliver LIVE EXCLUSIVES about the Netroots Nation convention. Actually, I don’t have a whole lot to say. Here are some tidbits:
• Ran into Lt. Dan Choi yesterday, when he learned he was officially discharged. He still hasn’t seen the documents yet, but they are with his family. Choi was in jail a couple days ago for shutting down Las Vegas Boulevard protesting Harry Reid for not bringing ENDA to a vote in the Senate. He said it was odd to not be in his military uniform in jail.
• Bill Halter appeared on the morning panel, and I got to steal a few minutes with him. I asked him about the difficulty running against candidates who “progressive-wash” themselves. Blanche Lincoln came out with this derivatives title that she “wrote” right before the primary, blunting Halter’s message of Lincoln as a Wall Street fighter. Halter said that the complexity of the specific issue made it even harder to counteract the message – it was hard to wrap Arkansans heads around the fact that Lincoln left a big loophole in her Section 716 of the bill, for example, or that she didn’t filibuster the bill when Maria Cantwell was doing so precisely because her derivatives title became unenforceable. This is something that progressives need to figure out, because incumbents have done this over and over again to inoculate themselves from criticism from the left.
• Elaine Marshall’s campaign manager announced that internal polls show her leading by 2 points over Republican Richard Burr. The numbers are 37-35. Marshall, the more progressive candidate in the primary, is winning her general election campaign, or is at least very competitive; Blanche Lincoln, the more corporate candidate, is getting blitzed, even in her own internal polls, in the general election. These are both southern states, so it’s close to an apples-to-apples comparison. Says something about what type of candidates can be more effective. (This is actually a good rundown of the Halter panel, and the progressive determination to force primaries and get better Democrats.)
• A lot of buzz about Bill White’s campaign here in Vegas. White, the mayor of Houston, is running for Texas Governor, and has doubled up secessionist Rick Perry in cash on hand. A lot of that money is apparently coming from Kay Bailey Hutchison supporters. There’s a strain of Republicans who are backing White because they’re frankly offended by Perry’s extreme ideology.
• You can read the deets on the training session today I participated in, about covering Congress. Marcy Wheeler and Mike Stark, among others, were on hand. I thought it was a pretty good distillation of how to do what I do on a daily basis. As I said, it felt a little like the factory worker training his replacements, but we need replacements! We need a lot of citizens engaging and paying attention to the machinations at the federal level just so the powerful cannot get away with spin.
Anyway, it’s good to be here and talk to people and swap stories. If I can come up for air, I’ll post again.

I would like to know, now that the primary is over, if Bill Halter will repudiate his bigotry on immigration.
Thanks, David, for letting us know what’s happening at the Netroots meeting. Something in the news sounds good, too:
Geithner: Taxes on Wealthiest to Rise [Bush tax cuts to expire]
LINK.
I can’t help but wonder, and I think I’m fairly tin-foil free, if Timmy has been tapped to give us this great news so maybe we’ll relax a bit on getting Elizabeth Warren appointed to head the Consumer Protection Agency.
TIMMAY!
Since it will take action by the Senate to extend those tax cuts, it will be unforgivable for the Democrats who don’t want to extend them to allow the legislation to sail through the Senate without a filibuster, particularly in light of all of the filibuster thwarted legislation that would have helped ordinary people in the last couple of years. That will be a nail in the coffin of the Democratic majorities in both houses I think.
Bill White is a FORMER mayor of Houstopolis and nope, Perry is not popular with anybody. His “rally” in Austin got a lot of press but in the end, he only managed to attract 200 people total and some of those were counter protesters. Perry would have been out four years ago easily if Friedman hadn’t run.
dday, I’m interested in attendance. I’d expect it to be down, owing both to the economy & to the Obamabotness of Kos. Can you ask what the trend is this year vs. other years? Amy Goodman is covering it & talks about the ‘thousands’ attending, which would be a lot more than when I went in 08. Is it really up to that order of magnitude?
Here is a link to a Dkos diary that has more about the White House claim that they’ll let Bush’s tax cuts expire.
damn ! logged in hoping to see video of that magical Dayen/Walden karaoke I read about on the journolist thingy :D

Maybe hundreds of thousands of signatures in support of Elizabeth Warren might just might pull a tiny bit of weight

Yup.
Very good question. And speaking of attendees, yesterday I actually heard (I think it was) L. O’Donnell refer to Moulitsas as “the godfather” of progressive blogging. I threw up in my mouth a little bit.
Is anyone at Netroots talking about ways to destroy Andrew Breitbart? That’s a very important goal, IMO.
thanks for the picture of those two.
Are you shitting me? Did that happen?
Seems to me that the obvious counter would be to say “She’s for this now? What about all the other times?”, with examples. That would take a little research (find bills in the past she supported or tried to kill), but at the time it was pretty clear that people had done that research already.
Yes and no. I abhor the lying scum tool Breitbarts of this world as much as anyone else.
But my question is: why are our so-called “left leaders” – this time in the guise of BHO, Vilsack and the NAACP – dancing to well-known serial liar Breitbart’s tune??? I’ve been ranting about this, so I’m being redundant, I know.
But I think the bigger issue is WHY did the NAACP, BHO and Vilsack knee-jerk react to Breitbart’s predictable LIES and diss, distance themselves from and fire an innocent citizen, Shirley Sherrod?
Is anyone else out their chilled by how this came down??? Going after Breitbart is one thing, but Rupert Murdoch will just pay off someone else to do what Breibart does. There’s no end to the Breitbarts of this world.
WHY, though, have our laughingly called “leaders” so willingly abandoned one of their own constituents at the first flick of the finger of spooge scum bucket like Breitbart.
And what are WE doing in response to BHO, Vilsack & the NAACP’s treatment of Shirley Sherrod???? The very weak “apologies” are really insufficient, imo, as any kind of “reparation.” Clearly, Democrats and leftists should only EXPECT to be treated like Ms. Sherrod by our political “leaders.” WHY are we putting up with THAT???? Forget Breitbart. WHO are we voting for and why????
If they aren’t so pissed off they can’t see straight and aren’t plotting walking straight out of Netroots Nation and into a General Strike, I don’t care.
The Democratic Party has surrendered this country to Fascists, not only without a fight, without even an angry voice being raised in the Fascist’s general direction.
