The activity on the left to fire Alan Simpson from the Cat Food Commission is growing. Today, Rep. Alan Grayson joins the effort. From an email to supporters:
Deficit Commission Republican Co-Chair Alan Simpson just called Social Security a “milk cow with 310 million tits.”
Simpson seems to know a lot about farm animals. Which isn’t surprising, because only a swine would use such words to describe a program that we rely on to pay for food, medicine, and rent. Simpson is known for calling Social Security recipients ‘greedy geezers’, even while living on a generous government pension.
Enough of this nonsense. Fire this guy. And stop the Commission’s goal of cutting Social Security.
Grayson has a mini-site on this at StopTheCatfoodCommission.com.
In addition, several progressive groups have demanded that Simpson be fired:
The point of the commission was to have a bipartisan panel that could work through difficult areas and search for solutions to our problems in what President Obama called a “serious and thoughtful way.” So it’s hard to think of a worse co-chair than someone like Alan Simpson, who once again demonstrated that he has neither the temperament nor the objectivity needed to delve into such an important issue.
The National Council for Women’s Organizations:
We call for the resignation of Alan K. Simpson as co-chair of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. We have given the former Senator several chances at redemption, but his email today to our sister member organization, the Older Women’s League, illustrates his clear disrespect for Social Security, women and the American people, highlighted by his degrading, sexist, ageist and profane language. In the closing few sentences of the e-mail he states, “It’s the same with any system in America. We’ve reached a point now where it’s like a milk cow with 310 million tits! Call when you get honest work.”
Simpson has repeatedly, over the course of years, shown contempt for those who rely on Social Security while berating those who disagree with him. As Paul Krugman wrote yesterday, “he has to go.”
The Alliance for Retired Americans:
I am writing to you about a pattern of disturbing, insensitive, biased and offensive comments by former Senator Alan Simpson, the co-chair of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. On behalf of the four million members of the Alliance for Retired Americans, I urge you to demand Mr. Simpson’s resignation.
The Campaign for America’s Future:
Social Security has worked for 75 years and does not contribute one penny to the national debt. It has no business being part of the White House debt commission’s deliberations.
Yet debt commission co-chair Alan Simpson has used his position to repeat lie after lie about Social Security, clearly signaling his intention to support unnecessary benefit cuts that would undermine our nation’s retirement security.
This has metastasized. FDL’s petition goes further than most, however, not only asking to sack Simpson, but disband the entire commission.
On a conference call with several women’s groups and Rep. Raul Grijalva, advocates repeated Simpson’s long history of dissembling on Social Security, as well as his long history of acts against women, including chasing Anita Hill down a hallway after her Supreme Court confirmation testimony. He simply isn’t fit to serve.
On a related note, Grijalva had this to say about efforts to cut Social Security (this is a rough transcript):
Based on what we’re hearing from our constituents, they see this (the deficit commission) as a threat or even bigger. The will of Congress has already shifted in a whole different direction. The test is happening right now with my colleagues who are campaigning. If they’re not hearing what I’m hearing, they’re not listening. It’s going to be very tough to vote for any major cuts to Social Security for reasons of political survival.
UPDATE: Jack Conway has now added his voice, though he dissembles a bit on the program’s “long-term solvency”:
“Senator Simpson clearly is not approaching the serious challenge of solving the long-term solvency of Social Security with serious solutions,” said Conway in a statement to HuffPost. “Instead, he’d rather use offensive language to make
headlines. Rather than serve as a distraction to the rest of the group, the Senator should step down.”Social Security, however, does not face a solvency crisis; the program’s actuaries estimate it can pay full benefits until 2037 and slightly reduced benefits in the decades after, if not changes are made.
Conway called on his opponent, Republican Rand Paul, to repudiate Simpson. “I call on Rand Paul – not his spokesman but him personally – to disavow Senator Simpson’s comments. We can be fiscally responsible without harming seniors or privatizing Social Security,” he said. A Paul spokesman didn’t immediately return an email.
UPDATE II: Progressive Caucus co-chair Lynn Woolsey: Fire Alan Simpson.
“Social Security should not even be on the table in deficit-reduction talks because it has not contributed a dime to that deficit, which has been caused largely by endless wars, reckless tax cuts and the recession.
“There are many better ways to reduce the deficit, including introducing the public option into the health exchanges created by the health care reform bill. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the public option would save $68 billion dollars over the first seven years. I have introduced a bill to do just that.
“But Simpson seems more intent on targeting Social Security and those who receive it.
“Simpson’s apology is not enough. He should resign.”

Your link to disband the entire commission isn’t working for me on Firefox.
fixed. I was missing the http.
Let the commission at least produce a proposal. Why all of the fear coming from the left? Oh no, Alan Simpson said “tits.” Grow a pair of tits and chill out.
Woot! Woot! This movement seems to be picking up steam pretty rapidly. Thnx for all the updates, David.
Read here often?
I bet not!
The commission should disbanded because no matter what they come up with, it is forever tainted.
Garyson? More kabuki, rotating villains and heroes.
Grayson will get to vote against it because enough retiring/defeated Dems and hard-core Blue Dog DINOs will join with the GOPers to pass the cuts.
Recall that catfood commission.
MoveOn.org and the Progressive Caucus are “progressive groups?”
Could have fooled me.
That sounds about right. When it comes to utterly shameless opportunistic self-promoters Grayson is outdone only by Weiner.
To his credit, he’s quite the showman. He would just do more good headlining in Vegas than being a standard bearer for progressivism.
Why would opponents of Social Security reform want to have Simpson replaced?
Nominating Elizabeth Warren and firing Alan Simpson would go a long way for Obama to regain his footing with progressives.
By the way, wouldn’t there actually be 620 million tits?
Wasn’t the commission supposed to fly beneath the radar of the general public and the media so they could spring some crap at the last moment to steamroll it all though Congress? Alan “Creepy Old Man” Simpson did not follow the script and spilled the beans. He couldn’t control himself (has he ever?) and has blown their cover. Criminals often do that.
Simpson’s not going anywhere. First of all he’s not black (think Van Jones and Shirley Sherrod) and secondly he’s not a professional leftist. These are the only two groups Obama will throw under the bus. Simpson’s safe. It’s the working and middle class Americans that are in real danger.
Wrong reply. Question meant for #12
Sad but true. I fully expect some kind of pointless token gesture like that running into the 2012 elections.
Do you think the fuckin plutocracy is worried about a whiff of “taint?”
If you think Obama is worried about reconnecting with the ones that elected him you’ve been smoking crack.
Firing Simpson won’t accomplish much, methinks; he’ll just get replaced by someone similar. Glad to have some light shed on this nefarious commission, though, and I could care less if Simpson said tits or ta-tas or penis or poo-poo, he’s an @sshole greedhead trying to steal MY money.
Fine to have Grayson doing this. Why not? Just don’t count on Grayson for the long haul is all.
BTW love the graphic: hilarious! Moot!
While I detest him totally the choice of Alan Simpson as a co-chair may have been a god-send.
He is so obnoxious and such a totally mean-spirited hateful individual that paired with a big mouth he is his own worst enemy. I’ve sill convinced that the Big O wants to cut social security by increasing the age of retirement to 70 but Simpson can’t help but do his level best to let us know what he is up to -
Agree. A good point, which is why I’m all for highlighting this nasty old man’s meanspirited diatribes for all the world to see.
these are all great quotes but the all miss one of the most important tools they need to make the point;
“people rely on social security” is not nearly as good as “people have invested in social security and there is surplus in that investment, it is not a handout”
bing
the could go on;
“unlike the redistribution of middle class wealth marketed as “tax deductions for the wealthy” which have NEGATIVE return”
so much these critters can learn from firedoglake
Don’t you people see? Putting Simpson in charge was all part of the eleventy dimensional plan to *discredit* the commission that the Obama team, umm, commissioned, and to nullify all those Social Security hating staffers they, uhh, appointed, and, err, let me get back to you.
I wish the people from these organizations would take more time to point out that Simpson is on a government pension. That’s the best argument there is for getting him fired.
BINGO!!! ☆ ✰ ✮ ✯!!
Love those ☆ ✰ ✮ ✯ Quotes!!
IIRC, obamarahma said something about standing against the repug desire to privatize SS. It seems to me that privatization has not been high on the agenda for the repugs. Instead, obamarahma wants to make a few tweaks to SS. He is not referring to the FICA tax on elevated incomes when he says that. He has allowed the misperceptions to stand that SS is nearly bankrupt, and that the “IOUs” are worthless.
I agree with several commentors here and elsewhere, that keeping simpleton in place is best because progressives can continue to provoke him to get an accurate view of what is being considered behind closed doors. If he goes, the rest of the group will keep their mouths shut and probably no one would replace simpleton. There are enough votes to begin the gutting of SS without him.
I don’t go to the big obamarahma support blogs. Are they continuing with their undying love?
Calling for Simpson to be fired is a bit like blaming the mirror for what you see in it. Simpson was picked because he has no respect for middle class and poor Americans. His remarks aren’t an anomaly; they’re exactly what anyone with any knowledge of the man would have expected.
There’s wisdom in this. He really is the face of the commission, not some crazy person who just happened to be on the commission because he won a lottery.
MSNBC shows (KO,Ed,Rachel) should stop concentrating
on the mosque,Beck rally,Sarah P’s facebook/twitter
comments, and all the other economically meaningless
drivel. These things are put out by the right wingnuts
to confuse listeners.Instead, more shows on SS cuts,
the mortgage mess, jobs and even what’s happening in
NJ (loss of $400 million from Race to the Top.Why?)
Only MSNBC provides consistent TV time for these
more serious items.Let’s not waste it.
Most progressives will vote for Obama anyway. Some are too stupid to know better, and the rest are too afraid of the Republicans.
This is why progressives have no say in DC politics. They will never refuse to vote for Democrats in numbers large enough to change the course of elections. The Tea Partiers have no such compunction. The country will continue to drift right politically, because progressives are too afraid to demand what they want.
There’s irony for you.
You are probably 100% correct, but this year and 2012, I’m only voting locally. I live in an area that is about 2/3 repug so there is no hope for a progressive. If you try to point out problems with repug talking points, the locals will look at you as if you are speaking a foreign language with which they are not familiar.
Unfortunately, once people make up their minds about something they are far less likely to see the opposition point of view. We certainly need better news organizations, particularly on TV, than we have now. Better news would go at least partway toward making your point for you.
Still, at the end of the day, people who won’t change or withhold their votes aren’t going to matter. Politicians have to please the people who can and will make them unemployed or take away their power. Those are the folks who matter.
I really think it doesn’t make any difference to Obama whether we vote for him or not. We certainly are not going to change his agenda if we do nor if we don’t. He is simply a conservative and not close to being a liberal progressive..
I believe he is aiming to get some of the less extreme republicans such as Charlie Crist to change parties and in fact not voting his way may just add to the notion that he needs to pander to the right..
“Nominating Elizabeth Warren and firing Alan Simpson would go a long way for Obama to regain his footing with progressives.”
Maybe so but why do you think Obama wants to regain his footing with the “f##king Re%%%ds”?
Obama will never regain his footing with progressives. He created this monster commission after Congress voted it down. There is no problem with Social Security. There is no reason to create a commission to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. Obama is an irresponsible politician who is further to the right than the blue-dog Democrats.
Diracfock, you are right about MSNBC. But don’t even expect anything better from them. They are information-as-entertainment only, and cannot be otherwise. I would recommend mostly turning off US mainstream commercial news sources. At MSNBC they are stroking your ego for being liberal. Great. It is the same basic schtick as Fox, but targeting different tastes. I would highly recommend reading widely from global sources.

I love this thread…old white men have run the world for so long that they really cannot entertain a different reality. Indeed, I have to be careful about age-ism, to be sure. But white men of a certain age have never experienced not being on top or prejudice etc. It is time for some of these guys to politely and quietly leave the stage. Most of them never learned how to play nice/get along with others in the first place. The time is quickly coming when folks like dumb, mean Cheney or McConnell are not only over the hill, they have been replaced by a different world view.
Not quickly enough, RevBev. Not quickly enough.
Keep him on! His presence and big mouth are the absolute best way to assure that the Cat Food Commission’s recommendations will not be followed. Don’t give us deficit hawks that know how to look polished before the camera. Let Simpson stay and continue to let it all hang out.
People like you are the reason I hate both political parties in this country. “Republicans can do no wrong!” “Nuh-uh, Democrats are looking out for you!” Until I see some actual substantive evidence to believe otherwise, both parties are filled with greedy peckerheads.
70 years old might have been sensible future goal for retirement if the public option and access to health care instead of forced purchase of (likely inadequate, tiered and unaffordable) health insurance for every US citizen had actually occurred.
The healthy life-span statistics, I feel sure will be dropping further and faster than the existing sorry state they are presently in, in this colony of the international TBTF corps.
Simpson was picked because he has no respect for middle class and poor Americans.
Yes, indeed. Simpson was picked by Obama who has utter contempt for middle class and poor Americans. Ditto for liberal and progressive Democrats (some of whom still stupidly support him.)
What Obama thinks is of little interest to me at the moment. You’re right, he’s probably going to stay conservative. The rest of his party is another matter. They are learning that it’s OK to screw their base, and that they will not suffer for that. As long as they continue to have that attitude reinforced by being re-elected, they won’t change.
Obama didn’t vote for all the crap legislation that’s come through Congress this year. Ask Jimmy Carter how things can go when a President’s own party runs Congress. It’s only smooth sailing when Congress wants it that way.
“But white men of a certain age have never experienced not being on top or prejudice etc.”
Really?
I worked as 60 year old stock boy for a big box retailer when I couldn’t get other work despite a college degree and a twenty five year stellar work history. That’s ageism, isn’t it?
Prejudice is an equal opportunity team picker. The teams are different but everybody on the same team has one characteristic that’s the same.
As time passes, everyone is migrating to one team. It’s the poor team and it’s the seventh inning.
BTW, Simpson was arrested as a kid for shooting holes in stop signs. He really hasn’t changed much
Jesus, STFU Lynn.
All that’s happening here is the same shit that happened with the health insurance corporation sellout, dems are squealing at the bad guy to convince us they have any principles at all until it’s time to vote. They see it as an opportunity to get our votes.
Then when it counts they’ll fold like the little punks they are, you too Obama.
[modnote: please skip the STFU, thank you.]
It’s not the “tits” common, as irritating as that is. It’s the fact that, as has been amply demonstrated in numerous sources, Simpson doesn’t even understand what Social Security is and appears to have been placed there to work against the program and the people who depend on it, not to “reform” it. He’s the gross, nasty cover-man for the Obama admin’s behind-the-scenes attempts to shift yet more of the country’s assets to the wealthy. Why don’t you understand this?
I intended to be careful…generalizations are seldom 100%. Please accept my apology. B
“Please accept my apology.”
Not a problem. I’m familiar with clean-ups on Aisle 3. :>}
I got a Grayson petition today to disband the whole thing, since it’s all about cutting Social security. Who gives a flying … about Simpson? with or without him if this crap continues we’ll lose it sooner or later.
Look at this prop:
Lowering the heat around raising retirement age
By the time Obama cons everybody that he “saved Social Security from privatization” by those awful republcians who have nothing to do with it except beating the drum, he’ll be a hero in the “liberal” propaganda machine.
And the rich will still have their tax cuts.
Thanks…nothing more charming than a good sense of humor;)
This is the one issue that might keep the House (and Senate) under Democratic Party control after the Nov election.
How about spay/neuter that catfood commission?
It almost seems as if Obama has been sent in by the Gopers to destroy the Dims from within with the way he’s been acting.
There, fixed it for you.
