The Maine press and the national media devoted full coverage to the Lady Gaga/Servicemembers Legal Defense Network rally yesterday in Deering Oaks Park in Portland, and 2,500 supporters joined her at the event to press for the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
Gaga accomplished something that Barack Obama never did during the health care debate or the stimulus: she put pressure on Maine’s Senators by appearing in their backyard. In fact, just that event alone represents more lobbying than the President has done on this entire bill in the Senate. And she doesn’t have Air Force One; she drove up I-95 in her tour bus 11 hours from Raleigh, North Carolina to make it to Portland. When the defense authorization bill was assured of passing the House as well as the Senate Armed Services Committee, then and only then did Obama and his organizing team pile on to press for passage. Now, with the vote in peril, they’ve done next to nothing, outside of a perfunctory statement of support (earlier Obama did promise to make calls to Senators on the DREAM Act, which is also attached to this bill, so I’m not sure how that plays in).
However, it’s unclear whether Gaga’s efforts were enough to sway Maine’s two Senators, who hold the fate of the motion to proceed today in their hands:
“Let me be clear, the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ law should be changed,” said Collins in a statement. But she criticized Reid’s handling of the bill.
“Now is not the time to play politics, and I again call on the Majority Leader to work with Republican leaders to negotiate an agreement so that the Senate can debate the defense bill this week,” she said.
Snowe said the 17-year-old policy is ‘overdue’ for review, but added that a vote on the policy should wait until the defense department’s comprehensive review, ordered in March, is complete.
“We should all have the opportunity to review that report which is to be completed on December 1, as we reevaluate this policy and the implementation of any new changes,” she said in a statement.
It’s worth noting that nowhere in Snowe’s statement or Collins’ statement do they explicitly say they would vote against cloture on the motion to proceed, regardless of what the LA Times says. However, both of them expressed a clear preference to join their obstructionist GOP buddies and hide behind procedure to continue enshrining discrimination into the personnel decisions of the armed forces.
We’ll see what they do today, at approximately 2:15pm ET. Is HRC scoring the motion to proceed, or will Susan Collins get to skate again and appear on the cover of Equality magazine?
A word on procedure, Reid’s plan if the motion to proceed passes is to vote on three amendments: the DREAM Act, an GOP amendment stripping out DADT (which doesn’t have 60 votes), and an ban on secret holds. Then, he would move off the bill and over to either a continuing resolution to fund the government or the Obama tax plan. The Senate would return to the defense authorization bill after the elections.

I hope the rest of the speech provided context that made that snippet make sense. Who cares about her favorite cut of meat? How does wearing a meat dress relate to DADT?
I’m pleased to see someone lend their celebrity to a good cause, but the snippet seemed to be about her, not the cause
Check out the link under “2,500 supporters” in the post above:
I’d say she tied it to the cause pretty well.
Republican baggage: The Rot that keeps on giving http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2010/09/how-serious-is-the-gmac-problem-pretty-serious-and-not-just-gmac.html OT
The whole speech.
NYT Republicans and others are expected to filibuster DADT repeal. http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/21/senate-democrats-dont-filibuster-gay-service-ban/?hp
A free concert in Maine to support repeal of Don’t ask Don’t Tell would get even more attention since its likely a free concert would get a much bigger crowd.
A sign saying free concert if you support Gay Rights at the entrance would convince the Press its a political rally.
Plus I’m guessing Maine a small state does not get to many free concerts from stars as big as her. A few months planing and promotion and I bet her crowd would be bigger than anything Colins and Snowe ever got put together.
I am just brainstorming some nightmare for Snowe and Collins if they don’t get on the stick and support this.
I think Gaga is doing what Stars should have done years ago.
Gaga keeps this up lets see the Press try and claim the kids are going GOP on the issues. Nope they leave Obama because he’s not Left enough.
Lets see any GOP Star or Politician pull in Gaga numbers for an anti Gay Rally.
Did she write that speech? If so she should write here either that or who ever wrote the speech should still Props for reading that speech.
Personally don’t understand all the fuss. The U.S. armed forces are engaged in two illegal wars, in which all the participants are complicit, but no one seems to have any objection to that. Gaga’s pitch is to make more persons complicit, when they would be better of clear of the military.
We all want the wars to end. Gays serving is a separate issue. However if we tie Gays serving openly to our continuing to fund both wars we force the GOP to either go on record for Gay rights or join us in ending both wars.
Such a move is what true House and Senate Leaders would be doing because either way we win.
If the homes are not foreclosed then what happens to their status as bank assets? What happens to the home loan debt written on that debt?
Do the Banks or the Federal Reserve own most of that Debt? If these foreclosures are stopped this debt might become worthless.
Good I want them to I want them to lose a generation of younger voters who are more supportive of Gay Rights.
I just wish Obama had a pair and would realize that first priority anti gay voters will never vote for him. But Gay Rights voters even 2nd or 3rd priority Gay Rights voters would remember the day Obama actually found a pair and stood up for Gay Rights.
Maybe Gay Groups can organize sending Obama a million pairs of Brass Ones?
Stall tactic until after the election she is afraid of her own Tea Baggers. Lets face it she won’t flip she’s only liberal if there is no sacrifice involved if its safe to support a cause.
You could write both Collins’ and Snowe’s entire political history in 8 words: Always a day late and a dollar short.
Yes. She said she wrote it during the 48-hour period preceding the speech and the point that impressed me the most was that the straight soldiers who are homophobic should be the ones who “should go home,” because they are the ones with the problem.
I think she gave a rousing speech the likes of which I haven’t seen in a very long time. I guess I’m an old fuddy duddy because six months ago I was only vaguely aware of her by her stage name, Lady GaGa, which I thought rather bizarre.
Well, now I’m a big fan.
I love fabulous and outrageous passion and sincerity. She’s all of that and then some.
The difference being, she actually wants what she says she wants, and is willing to stick it out there to get it.
Senator Susan Collins just announced that she will filibuster the repeal of “Don’t ask, don’t tell.”
EDIT: I added the italicized 3 words
The way I heard Cynthia’s comment was if she’s got important points to make, why not show a snippet of that.
Obama reveals his true fierce advocacy for homophobia by nominating John Amos, a homophobe who opposes repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” to lead the Marine Corps.
Well there’s a surprise… NOT.
I blogged yesterday that Monday’s NYT had an article about Snow & Collins which can be summarized that both are very, very afraid after the DE primary… T-baggers got their souls (not that they had much in the way of a soul anyway).
ReThuglicans: the ones you can trust to be racist and homophobic no matter what.
Sorry, here’s the link.

Remember, this is the Obama WH that thinks it just has to be a little more republican than bill clinton, and remember GITM is put forward as the issue that helped cripple the clinton WH, even though the Clinton WH was crippled by its own right wing economic belief system.Maybe obama should use Lady duh duh to replace rahm
yet another example of “Mr. Fierce Advocacy” in action. Seriously, has their ever been a President who has trashed every single campaign promise made and governed as the exact opposite of what he campaigned as. I mean, Good God Almighty, does the man have a soul at all?
I greatly appreciate Gaga’s advocacy, but I think it was for nothing.
The last paragraph of the piece says it all:
In other words, the bill will have amendments, which means it must go back to the House to be voted on again. But the House is likely to be under Republican control after the elections; so therefore the amended bill will not pass the House vote.
Unless the House is able to vote on and pass the amended version before the recess, I see no way it will pass. The Republicans have made it perfectly clear that they are willing to let the defense authorization act rot unless they….wait a minute…maybe letting the def auth act rot is a good thing? A backdoor way to force us out of two wars? Nah…we can’t let that war money stop flowing now can we?
“wait a minute…maybe letting the def auth act rot is a good thing? A backdoor way to force us out of two wars?”
if any members of the CPC had any balls at all…that’s not a bad thought. But then again, the C does stand for castrated, doesn’t it?
The answer is “no”.
IMHO Obama’s pandering to the religious right again, and the-homophobes — at least the ones that can get over the black thing as long as they have a hate target.. It’s his secret constituency. Remember Rick Warren at the inauguration?
I don’t think this nearly as much to do with gays as it has to do with his own political future. He’s very narcissistic.
