Democratic candidates are already dead in the water in Louisiana, so I wouldn’t term this an October surprise. But Robert Gibbs told reporters today that the Administration would lift their moratorium on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico soon, possibly by the end of the week.
The moratorium was never meant to be an outright ban on deepwater drilling, from the Administration’s perspective. They sought to put a hold on the process until better safety and accountability measures could be written and put into place. Originally this was expected to last until the end of November, but clearly the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, which has the federal oversight responsibility, feels they have enough confidence in the new rules to allow drillers to return to the waters.
Many of those new rules have already been announced, and they would place slightly more costs on platform operators, around 2% for deepwater drilling and 1% for shallow-water drilling. Surely we’ll hear that this “excessive” regulatory burden is driving the whole industry to go Galt, and we should give up on overseeing the cementing, casing, drilling fluid and blowout preventers because the good people bringing up oil from the Gulf can do it themselves.
Mary Landrieu would probably be roused to lift her hold on OMB nominee Jack Lew if the moratorium did expire this week.
UPDATE: Apparently that moratorium will be lifted today, according to Rep. Charlie Melancon (a Democrat now running for Senate in Louisiana).
UPDATE II: And Mary Landrieu still won’t lift her hold. Apparently the White House needs to say sorry, or something.

Gosh I guess it only took a couple of months to clean up the corruption in the MMS. So now that the regulatory angency has been cleaned up, I guess there are no more risks with deep water drilling.
I could have sworn that the Administration had said not to blame them, becasue they were in office only a little over a year. They said they did not have time to clean up the corruption at the MMS.
The administration is starting to really enjoy this hippie punching.
Each time i feel my contempt and revulsion for this administration has reached it’s limit they make that extra effort to expand it further.
Go Democrats, Yea Obama! You are reaching Cheney territory for me now.
We should only wish we were Hungary!
WOW! They got the new technology THAT fast. amazing!
Actually I thought Obama asked a bunch of old, leaky wells to shut down. does this make that null and void too?
Ahhh yes, the new transformational politics…
Right, because offshore drilling will solve our energy problems!?
Jeebus Fcuking Crystal.
I’m beginning to loathe this WH with heat of a thousand suns. And I thought that would only apply to Bush the Duh.
Screw Mary Landrieu.
oink!
The fierce urgency of bend over.
Creepy fascist America.
not with a ten foot pole… eeww
Not even with Barry’s dick.
Deep water drill…?
What an abomination. It’s outrageous. The oil companies admitted they don’t have the technology to stop a deepwater gusher. Oh, that’s right, corporations are free to shit on all of us and walk away scot free.
We incur medical costs from their toxic wake, and pick up the cost of damages. The jobs ruse is amusing. All of our free traders have no problem shipping every US job overseas and suddenly they’re concerned with unemployed Americans in the Gulf. Make me laugh. This is about oil company cash.
Same thing with defense contractors. Those jobs are the only jobs
Congress is interested in saving. Defense contractors pay big bucks for
Congress to keep funding perpetual war.
The Gulf floor is covered in a death blanket of toxic goo, globs of oil are still floating on Louisiana shores, and BP has already closed up shop. Back to business as usual. Salazar hasn’t done jack shit to regulate anything.
I predict that Obama sanctions deepwater drilling next week.
Apparently the need to reform Senate rules so “Lone Wolves” can’t abuse the process applies to Landrieu as well as Demented.
Landrieu is acting like typical Senatorial scum, but why is Obama such a wimp? He might have noticed that the country is in a bit of trouble right now, and it would help if we had one guy acting like the President instead of one hundred Senators running around acting like three year olds.
But then I guess that’s by choice. He seems to have no problem doing stuff behind the public’s back or kicking a bunch of defenseless bloggers that piss him off.
Makes him look like a bit of a cowardly bully.
Bummer for him.
Eli is upstairs!
America The Couch Potato
Precedentially pitch-slapped right back into the BP Obamanible ABYSS!
Harry Reid ignored Chris Dodd’s hold (FISA retroactive immunity). Not long afterwards, Harry Reid honored a Republican Hold.
Now Harry is honoring Landreau’s Hold.
Reid apparently honors holds only when they benefit Corporate Interests.
Give em Head, Harry.
What a F%$$ suprise the wh rolls over and nothing changes
I’d like to suggest they do something more emphatic. Preferably something extremely embarrassing for Landrieu.
I was thinking more “bends” than “rolls”.
