The White House reached out to multiple progressive groups today, trying to make amends over the tax cut deal, which he will sign later this afternoon.
“The president is trying to build consensus among labor leaders for his compromise tax policy” said Amy B. Dean, a former official with the AFL-CIO labor federation. The administration has “no problem reaching out to the labor movement when they need labor to be part of their electoral coalition. But they quickly forget that labor has a role to play in their governing coalition.”
Obama and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis are scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. in the White House’s Roosevelt Room with labor leaders, in discussions the White House says will focus on jobs and the economy. Among those attending are Trumka; United Steelworkers President Leo Gerard; American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten; Service Employees International Union President Mary Kay Henry, and United Auto Workers President Bob King.
The President reached out to the African-American community today as well.
I think the chart that should concern these groups is this one, from the Washington Post.
The public believes that the President is sincere in wanting to reduce the budget deficit because he is, in fact, sincere in wanting to reduce the budget deficit. He talks about it being in the medium term, but his opponents in the GOP want that to happen immediately, to cancel out the stimulative effects of this bill. John Boehner said today that he would like to cut spending to 2008 levels “as soon as possible.” Congress will have to fund the government early next year, if a short-term continuing resolution passes as expected.
The fact that health care implementation money and money funding the war in Afghanistan was part of the omnibus spending bill which crashed and burned offers even more hostage-taking opportunities for the GOP. And then there’s this rumor, which I’ve heard as well:
Now the Republicans have identified their next hostage: They’re going to threaten to destroy the international financial stability of the United States by refusing to raise the debt ceiling. What are they demanding for ransom? They want President Obama to slash Social Security and Medicare before this next hostage crisis comes to a head in March or April.
As the story goes, the deficit frauds are already teaming up to basically implement much of the catfood commission recommendations and attach that bill to the debt limit increase this spring. The White House has not publicly stated support or opposition to this plan, and so the planning continues, with deficit frauds in both parties, from Kent Conrad to Paul Ryan, teaming up for basically leverage the moment. In the midst of this crisis, the President will muse about not harming the hostages by ruining the full faith and credit of the US government, and austerity will get enacted. It could look a lot like the tax cut bill, in terms of the speed with which it sails through Congress.
Steny Hoyer’s already talking about tax reform, and that might be a part of this as well. But the real blow would come from massive social spending cuts, including to entitlements, in the very near term, canceling out stimulus. People saw the tax cut bill pass and they reasoned that Washington doesn’t care about the deficit. They don’t, but Republicans do care about their job security. And they have to cut spending to prove they can keep it. They also have the imperative to do it to stop the economy from moving and deny Obama a second term.
Money for poor and vulnerable communities is already going out the door before the GOP House even begins. It’s only going to get worse if Obama willingly glides into the trap being set for him.

Does anyone here think the Hostage Takers won’t win again?
All the trickle-down arguments in the world don’t make failed supply-side economics. valid. The growing gap between the very wealthy and everyone else bodes poorly for the economic future of this nation. The greed-driven approach to taxation serves a very few selfish people at the expense of the long term needs of the country. Only the most cynical can press for continued tax cuts to the wealthiest. Obama did not just sell himself out- he sold out the American people. you can’t negotiate with Republican terrorists.
Let them shut down the government, its not like they do anything for the middle class or poor and I am sure the millionaires will still be able to escape to a nice socialist country til things work out.
Not a nice picture being here daily painted by Dave Dayen.
The next compromise will be that the Republicans agree to not default on the countries debt in exchange for Obama agreeing to abolish Social Security.
Well … you have to give up some things you like in order to avoid things you don’t like that’s just the nature of the process.
Thanks Professor Obama.
Things are going to get very ugly, very soon.
Clearly Obama came in with a first term agenda to complete the dismantling of the New Deal and finish installilng a fascist oligarchy. Once that’s accomplished, it doesn’t matter to him or his puppetmasters if he gets a second term. (Which I can’t imagine happening.)
So, who’s ready for a new third party?
A trap for Obama? He let Bernanke funnel $12.3 Trillion dollars out the back door to the Global Banking Cartel, and this was after TARP. Timmeh is running cover.
He’s complicit and using the Republicans for cover. The people have to pay this bill. http://bit.ly/huMd4Q
This crime is too big to wrap out heads around but when we do finally grasp it, they’re going to wish that space travel to another planet was already a possibility.
Who’s going to foreclose on the Fed? They create the money.
And there is cash flow associated with that 12.3 Trillion.
This process is too smooth for there not to be a plan.
Somewhere there are emails and a list of players.
Pass an enormous tax cut, then tank the spending bill?
Ok, where’s the written plan they are following.
DDay is invaluable to Lake dwellers for reliably bringing us the seriously bad news before we read it in MSM or see it on teevee. So I hope DDay doesn’t take my reaction the wrong way, but after the depth of Obama’s betrayals on our entire agenda since he won the Dem primaries in June 2008, I no longer give a flying fuck what happens to Obama. Obama doesn’t speak for me. Obama is waging permanent war & foreign occupations, not in my name. Obama is coddling war criminals & torturers, not in my name. Obama is selling control of the country and the Democratic Party to the ultra-rich and their playtoy banks, not in my name.
I don’t care which particular evil path Obama follows to destroy what remains of his reputation. We at the Lake should stop giving so much ink to Obama, he is our enemy. We should watch him, but not let his bullshit dominate our time & energy.
Yeah, it sounds like this is one is already baked in the cake. If Obama wanted to fight them, he’d be telling his buddies at the Chamber of Commerce on Wall Street that its their job to put the Republicans on the leash if they want save the stock market from melting down.
Since he clearly has no inclination to fight back, the question is not whether he’ll cave early, but rather what further humiliation will the Republicans impose on him AFTER he caves. They do have a gift for rubbing it in.
sorry Obama, enough of your abuse and betrayal, and then attempted “contrition”. You won’t find me going back to that abuse!
I divorce you as President.
When you give a rat a cookie, he then demands a gallon of milk with which to wash down the meal. “Compromising,” President Obama then offers the rat “only” a quart of milk — along with an additional cookie. …
I’ll never hit you again, honey. I promise.
Obama looks natural in that
sofa upholsterysuit. You mean sort of like this?
Speaking for myself, I say forget it. You made your choice, you can live with it.
Bingo. You hit all the
highlow points.I absolutely agree. By the way, don’t you just love the suit. Actually, in my minds eye, this is the way I have always pictured him.
After pushing through the South Korean NAFTA and pulling the Jenga stick out from under Social Security with tax cuts for the wealthy he reaches out to labor? Really?
Couldn’t get card check passed with strong majorities in congress. Couldn’t bail out workers like he did banksters so auto workers took huge pay cuts and lost substantial pension benefits. Knows that Republicans have a plan to force states to file bankruptcy in order to destroy the public worker unions but says nothing. Pushes neoliberal education policies that are designed to destroy public education in America and replace it with for-profit charter school operators.
If these “leaders” do anything but fill his ears with lots of misery then they need to get a job from him because teachers and other laborers are reaching the breaking point very, very quickly. The democratic party is about to see a tsunami of ex-voters and GOTV workers leaving the party. Do they realize this?
Good one!
the last 20 months = the following
Dems control WH
Dems control Senate
Dems control House
what do progressives get for helping DEMS control DC
1. Hoover Economic Policies
2. Bob Dole Health Care Bill
3. Bush Tax Cuts
Why did we vote for DEMS???
The current Dems in the house and senate will find raising money for 2012 very difficult!
Nothing = Nancy Pelosi passing 400 Bills and Harry Reid killing Nancy 400 bills
the last 20 months the republicans who control nothing in DC got the following!
1. Bush Tax Cuts
2. Bob Dole Health Care Bill
3. Hoover Economic Policies
Currently Progressives have no Chance, we have a bunch of clowns in congress, until we send some real progressives to congress to at least attempt to fight the GOP, we are wasting our time discussing the current batch of DEMS
Our members will not support any candidates that are not endorse by Jane, Glenn, and Adam Greene
I advise all dems to sign up for interviews with JANE, or don’t bother contacting us!
Who the fuck answers polls and gives high marks to this shitheel and his disgusting pillaging of the working and middle classes? Democrats apparently.
Shutting down the government will stop all of my income, but it will be worth the hassle to let people know that the Republicans would rather screw military, veterans, SS recipients, etc.
Just wish I didn’t feel Obama will willing destroy SS. He knows he isn’t ever going to need it, who cares about anyone else.
He will get it done in the next congress…..He is going to ask Labor to support EFCA once more, don’t be surprised if he makes the Public Option part of his campaign platform in 2012 once more.
That’s how craven this creep is.
Pay attention folks to which TV cable shows labour will appear on trumpeting support for the WH.During the tax giveaway to the richest of Americans, the WH sent Goolsbee on Rachel Maddow & O’Donnel cable shows…….they knew who their TV flunkies are.
This is what may finally kill progressive and rank and file Democratic support for Obama. Only a betrayal on this level will shock the rest of the Obama addicts into reality. Until it happens, I fully expect to hear all the bullshit about how “Obama will fight this!” Once Obama caves again and cuts Social Security, Obama addicts will see Obama for what he is. Also, American voters HATE weaklings, and when Obama caves on cutting Social Security, he will be seen as a weakling. Hell, he will make Jimmy Carter look like a man of iron.
What everybody said. Hate this effing bastard. Hate him worse than the deranged pukes, who at least are honestly who they are.
a combination of the best grifters to ever walk the earth and the most pathetic and stupid population ever and here we are, happy happy joy joy
“In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way.” – Franklin Delano Roosevelt
This stuff isn’t happening to Obama. This stuff is happening with Obama. The president is complicit. Here’s something I posted over at The Agonist earlier:
To that I would add this: From his remarks at his budget busting Bush tax cuts Reaganite trickle down economics and lay the foundation for cutting Social Security bill signing ceremony today:
He’s telling us. Some of us hear what he is saying. People like Robert Kuttner are trying to get the story out. So far it’s like screaming into the vacuum of space.
And now I’m back where I began:
“In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way.” – Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Here’s a chart of the estate tax:
http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/Tax-VOX/2010/1215/Resurrect-the-estate-tax-or-lose-250-billion
Clearly Social Security must be cut to fix the deficit.
And there’s your deficit which is sinking the social help we need.
amazing to find out that even Bush couldn’t rob US enough, they had to get the Fed in on the job.
” Give me control of a nation’s finances, and I care not what laws they pass” – Nathan Rothschild
and THAT’s what the Fed has always been about.
No, they’ll blame the nasty republicans again.
And they will kiss his ring, bend over, and let him screw them again. How many times must this repeat??
This started with the Democrats in the 1970 when the Senate started stripping all the wages and benifits from the bottom up.15,000,000 + unemployed and counting.More under employed and even more under paid.Leadership changed in the 1970.The Leadership of the WWII Generation built a nation where the floor sweeper earned enough to live on with money left and benifits. The leadership for the Baby Boomers in the senate have sold out the working class. The Baby Boomers Leadership started a slow sale out of the working class in 1970 to the FIRE SALE going on today.Save the USA clean the Senate.
The sorcerer’s apprentice is going get us. It’s maddening because you know now he will screw us. This is a hard core coordinated plan of collusion with the Repugs and Dem leaders. Kabuki at it’s finest and most treacherous.
Ladies and gentlemen: please relax and get on with your lives. Things are much worse than you think, but this is meant to be. Natural process of destruction and rebirth, etc. We can build a new world after crawling from the wreckage. Activism only slows things down. BTW, Obama will not run for re-election. You can take that to the bank, except I wouldn’t, if you know what I mean. He has enough to cash out now but will probably wait a bit before he pulls a Palin.
What you have to do is learn to love this stuff and see it as the answer, not disaster. Ten years from now the bad guys will be gone or begging for bread.
Thanks. Reading the comment thread on that article is a treat. Now I need a shower.
Who said no one could be a millionaire if not a billionaire in the land of opportunity? Are there no lotteries? Are their no casinos? Are there no game shows. Everyone has it within the grasp of unimagined wealth. At least that’s the official line.
You make some good points, and I mostly agree. However, my observation is that the “Greatest Generation” was actively complicit in & had a leadership & mentor role in selling out the working class. Boomers are clearly responsible, and John Boehner exemplies the “I got mine, EFF you attitude.”
But I witnessed my WWII/Great Depression parents enjoying the “fruits” of all the programs that eminated from FDR’s New Deal that directly benefited them post-WWII and up through the early 1970s. Some percentage of the Great Generation seemed to experience a group amnesia about how the New Deal & related following programs directly benefited them & enabled them to “pull themselves up by the bootstraps.”
What a lot of WWII & Boomers like to “forget” is that: yes, you DID “work hard,” but so do a lot of others. Those that rose more to the top ended up with a GIANT sense of entitlement that was originally encouraged by media personalities like Joe Pyne (sp?) but then the baton was passed to Pat Robertson & the 700 Club, and then to Rush Limbaugh, etc.
And just who will tell the U.S. public they’ve been played for chumps? The corporate media? The political parties? No, the U.S. public will watch as their standard of living continues to decline until they’ll finally say “what the fuck is going on here” and the plutocracy will say “it’s just the natural economic cycle, nothing to be concerned about.”
That great liberal, Teddy Kennedy, was as complicit in fucking over working people as was any Democrat or Republican. Kennedy was instrumental in pushing legislation that deregulated the trucking industry and he went along with legislation that deregulated airlines and railroads. All this legislation was signed off on by Jimmy Carter (even as he was making deals with BCCI).
Thanks, Teddy. Lion of the Senate, my ass.
I have a real problem with casting this as a generational issue. Just cause the Boomers were standing in the bank while it was robbed doesn’t make it their fault.
FWIW, as one of the millions of underemployed and a “Boomer” there are a lot of Boomers who have fought just as hard to make sure things are available to all and to lump us all in with the John Boehners is painting with just a bit too broad of a brush.
We aren’t perfect by any stretch but not everyone who was born between mid-1945 and I think it was 1964 works with the “I’ve got mine, Fuck You” attitude.
And it is only in the last few years that probably a majority of the Senate is made of Boomers if that.
“…if Obama willingly glides into the trap being set for him.”
No trap required. All one need do is look at Obama’s appointments to the deficit commission to realize that he is on board with cuts to social programs and entitlements.
What Obama wants, Obama gets, everytime. Everything else is theater to deceive and confuse the masses.
Last the last two or three post have a lot of daylight shining on team Obama,
His team include Republican Congress critters, banksters and the rest of the economic establishment.
Just wanted to take a moment to thank the old dems that have seen the light. Hope it is contagious.
from Gwendolyn Brooks, “Annie Allen”
Amen! As payback for Hoffa Sr. making Bobby look stupid at those hearings. People forget that that was the first major de-reg. And, don’t forget Bubba with NAFTA, repealing Glass-Steagal and the WTO. So, yeah. The Dem’s have been the Repugs dancing partner for over a generation now. Forget about Labor, Blacks, Latinos, LGBT, etc. It has all boiled down to the haves and the have nots. WAKE UP!!!
2011 will be the tipping point for America.
I go back to what FDR faced in 1933 after being sworn-in as president. The conservative-packed U.S. Supreme Court sought to undo his New Deal initiatives, FDR and Democratic Party initiatives meant to stabilize the banking industry while also putting more “chickens in every pot” of American citizens, initiatives that kept bank deposits away from investment gamblers, initiatives that drove down unemployment by pumping public money into the pockets of people which was spent in the private sector, thus stimulating the American economy from the bottom up, at least for the next four years, until 1937 when President Roosevelt listened to his conservative economic advisers who pushed for “austerity,” balancing the budget and cutting back on government assistance. Unemployment subsequently rose. No more “chicken in every pot.”
President Obama faces a similar situation in 2011 to that which FDR encountered in 1933, except Obama not only has a Republican-packed “Citizens United” U.S. Supreme Court against him, but also will have a Republican-controlled House of Representatives working against him and against any Democratic Party “chickens in every pot” initiative, a Republican House calling for drastic cuts in government programs and services, calling for austerity, while blocking or ending any government programs that don’t directly benefit the wealthiest, IOW, the Herbert Hoover years all over again.
The result?
Rising unemployment and an increase in poverty levels, with a mounting death toll among Republicans, Democrats and Independents who aren’t among the wealthiest. And Faux News, among the wealthiest of wealthiest Republicans, will spin it 24/7 that it’s all the Democrat’s fault (although enough Blue Dogs will be involved) or President Obama’s fault (if he agrees to go along with Republican plans), with nary a disparaging word ever uttered about the budget-cutting throat-slashing hard-core conservative policies of the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. And all the viewers of Faux News will nod their heads in agreement, even as they maybe lose their own job or watch members of their own family die due to further economic downsizing/outsourcing and severe government program cutbacks, all done so the wealthy can become even more wealthy.
And anyone daring to disagree, or rise-up in protest, will be faced with the latest “crowd control” technology battle-tested on the killing fields of Iraq and Afghanistan, cementing the corporate/the conservative/the wealthiest take-over of the United States, destroying America in the process, destroying the future of our nation’s children, including the children of those who did this to our democracy.
Great link.
Teddy Partridge is upstairs!
Sunday Late Night: No Fear
Yes, obama realizes what is happening to the dim party because that is the plan. I knew that he wasn’t going to be a saviour, but I didn’t realize that his intent was the destruction of the dim party. I realized that long ago in his administration. What I don’t understand is why every time a crisis comes up, commentors say that now obama has gone too far and people will begin to desert him. obama keeps doing things to destroy the party and show how little regard he has for his base. For instance, now that he has made this deal with the repugs, he is going to talk to his supporters. Why didn’t he do this before the deal? Well, they might have objected and caused some problems. Now he can just tell them that this was the best he could do and they must live with it. If they complain now, they will lose access (for whatever that is worth) so they will live in the veal pen.
I absolutely agree that he’s going to f*ck us over again and he fully intends to get away with what no Goper Pres. could ever dream of doing, cut SSI. In fact he’s already done it with his Orwellian named SSI Tax Holiday. A friggin Holiday? How clever, how arrogant. But, Obama is more and more open in his utter contempt for his own base and his own following. It’s really sad that this two hustler has conned even his own people who are being screwed every which way under this pricks evil rule. Pathetic how they stick up for this guy even though he’s using their good faith to harm them and their families. He’s a disgusting fraud and if that isn’t obvious now to anyone with eyes then it never will be.
The rich get a $139,000 tax-break while they do not spend it or create any jobs, while those on Social Security get a tax-increase (they have no earned income to get a payroll-tax decrease) and they haven’t received an increase in 2 years. Now the Republicans want Obama to go after them for more. This Reverse Robin Hood has to stop! These people will be dying in the woods soon! Dump Obama.
There are only two possibilities, right? Either he’s being played, and if he is he’s a naive idiot, or this is his agenda.
Can I have a show of hands? How many of you out there in the studio audience believe your president is a naive idiot? Besides Boehner. You sit down.
He needs to be primaried. Elizabeth Warren. Dennis Kucinich. Bernie Sanders. Lady Gaga. In any order of preference.
Commenter’s note: I wasn’t being snarky with the last one. Talk about a wardrobe trend-setter. Besides, she gets her money the old-fashioned way. She earns it.
So unlike anyone affiliated with Goldman Sachs…
I have nothing against Wall Street in general or Goldman in particular; I just don’t like what they do for a living there. Nice suits, though. Really nice suits.
Just primary him.
Actually, the more I think about it, the more the devil in me likes the idea of writing in Bernie Sanders in both major party primaries.
Wouldn’t it be shocking to the DNC or RNC if he won even one primary? Can you imagine Steele trying to explain that one?
You know, I’ve heard just about anything is possible at a caucus. Just sayin’…
I’ll bet this is why I’m never asked to run anyone’s political campaign. ;-)
Well, we all know Obama is a woos.
That leaves cutting the budget up to the Republicans. After all, it was the Democrats who went hog wild on uncontrolled and irresponsible spending.
If the Republicans want to take the Senate, the White House and keep the House in 2012 then they are going to have to make significant cuts. Very deep cuts. That is the public mandate.
Republicans need to keep making huge noises about JOBS. Where are the Obama jobs?
Cutting taxes was OK, but now is the time to pay for that almost 900 Billion it will cost.
It’s going to be interesting to watch and find out how gutsy the Republicans are and how sincere they are about cutting spending.
Sec of Defense has started to make some cuts in defense, but before cutting Social Security and Medicare (old people vote) Republicans will have to make deeper cuts in Defense as well as all other agencies.
Forty cents of ever Federal dollar comes from money borrowed from people that don’t like us very much. So, wrap this number around your liberal heads. FORTY per cent of the Federal budget must be cut. This year or next. Preferably this year.
Now that would be a huge joke! I hope it happens, because Republicans can use him as a whipping boy for all the nations ills.
I doubt Kucinich will be any better.
He’s playing the role of the true progressive.
He had a chance to take a stand on the public option but he bowed down.
Franken bowed on the tax cuts.
I think Grijalva did to.
We have “conservative” republicans in office, ” ” ” conservative ” ” ” republicans in office, mentally insane republicans in office, senile republicans in office, and a gaggle of trained actors.
I hope the unions don’t kiss Obummers ring and say, “We know he’s progressive, he’s just kinda um like sorta misdirectiguided and we have faith in him.”
If that happens how many others are dropping the **** out of any union they’re in if their reps say that?
OK, let’s not worry about issues this time since the candidates don’t. Let’s just get behind the leader and get rid of obummer.
OT; good ol’ Doonesbury, with one of Trudeau’s funnier strips in a while:
http://news.yahoo.com/comics/doonesbury
Patrick, he needs to have the democratic “leadership”, such as it is, tell him that if he runs again, the party will never recover from the political shitstorm that the voters will lay on their heads. I believe this will happen sometime in mid-2012, for the simple reason that it’s true, and that the “firing squad” will be made up of dems who are desperate to have the chance to hang onto cushy, highly-paid-and-perked jobs.
Anyone who thinks Obama is going to have the clout and capital to run again, please post and tell us where he’s hiding it.
