Sigh. So I guess I have to comment on Sarah Palin’s statement on the Tucson shooting, which was actually a statement about Sarah Palin, of course. First of all, the faux sincerity achieved by shaking her head a little bit from side-to-side is grating. But enough of the theater criticism.
Second, you have to love the statement, cribbed from Reagan, that “we have to restore the American precept that each person is accountable for his actions” from the woman who sent out her spokesman to claim that the crosshairs map actually had “surveyor symbols” on it.
And third, there’s this “blood libel” part. I have to figure whoever wrote this for Palin knew precisely what that metaphor was all about. It’s not an accident that Palin likens herself to a persecuted religious sect. She has the victimization thing down pat. But there’s a certain monstrousness in comparing being criticized, by political opponents and media figures, to claiming that Jews eat their matzos soaked in the blood of Christian babies as a pretext for a pogrom.
Finally, I join with Palin in her criticism of Bob Brady’s proposed bill that would criminalize speech. That’s not the answer, and I particularly don’t trust government to decide what constitutes protected speech and what doesn’t. But there’s a difference between freedom of speech and freedom from criticism. Palin wants both, and the latter appears nowhere in the founding documents or the laws of the land. Nobody forced her to become a public figure, and nobody gave her a card offering immunity from criticism. If you don’t want to be misunderstood for inciting violence through rhetoric, the best remedy is to not put yourself in that situation to begin with. That’s best settled with a norm and not a law.
I’ll leave the rest to Jim Clyburn:
Clyburn said that Palin didn’t grasp why such rhetoric was so troubling, regardless of the motivations of the alleged shooter of Giffords. The No. 3 House Democrat referenced the Civil Rights Era, and said that some of the shrill rhetoric in modern politics are reminiscent of that time in history.
“I have some experiences that maybe she does not have,” he said. “When I see and hear things today that are reminiscent of that period of time, I am very, very concerned about it, because I know what it led to back then, and I know what it can lead to again.”
I noticed Sharron Angle came out on the same day to defend her “Second Amendment remedies” statement. These two, Angle and Palin, are fighting phantoms. Nobody blames them directly for whispering in Jared Loughner’s ear. The violent rhetoric stands on its own as subject to criticism. What conservatives who protest too much want is to immunize themselves from any criticism whatsoever, and shut down anyone who calls for a reduction in the tone of debate, even if they call out both sides. Rage worked in the last cycle, and at some level conservatives don’t want that arrow taken from their quiver.

To be redundant: if these people don’t mean what they’re saying, they WHY are they advocating and directing their constituents/minions to actively pursue violence against those with whom they disagree?
It’s quite simple, really. No one is advocating for “stifling free speech,” but when you very clearly state the case that you are encouraging your followers to be violent against “the other side,” then there is a level of responsibility for what you said.
The question must be asked of conservatives over & over: if you don’t mean what you say, then why are you saying it? Words have consequences, and there must be consequences for what we all say to each other.
Exactly so, David. In Sarah’s world it’s all about Sarah. And talk about a masterstroke of horrible timing. Sarah is roughly akin to that wacko family from Kansas these days.
Chalk this one up as another example of Sarah Palin Reloads.
Sigh. This “blood libel” thing is a very big deal. Palin will say whatever she is told to say and whenever she is told to say it. This is less about Palin the human being and more about those she relies on to tell her what to say. Bush started it with his “crusade” comment. But Palin and her cabal have taken it to a new and dangerous level. Peace
How do you reload a surveyor symbol?
1. Sarah put a gun sight on Gabriella’s district, Jesse Kelly told people to pull the trigger on Gabriella, and a nut job finished the sequence.
2. If Sarah was Sarah Palinistan from Pakistan and had done the same thing, both Bush and Obama would have targeted her compound with a drone attack. And Dick Cheney would be out there proclaiming that even if there is only a one percent chance that Palinistan was involved, it would be worth the risk.
3. Any political leader that cannot understand that words have consequences does not deserve to have any political and/or supervisory experience.
4. Wouldn’t it be great if the only people taking about killing other people were the crazy people needing mental health care–instead of any politician wanting to get on the front end of a media news cycle?
5. The ONLY victims here are the people killed/wounded.
Palin just. doesn’t. get. it.
And why did she take down the innocent surveyor map within hours of the shooting? Something tells me it wasn’t because they thought it was time to resurvey. no retreat… resurvey! ..and that dog-whistle “blood libel” …wow this is some twisted perverted thinking.
Thank goodness somebody has had the guts to bring up that Palin woman! The media and the blogosphere just refuse to discuss that woman! There’s a good chance that the nation’s voters will forget that crazy fraud and even quit watching her TV show if somebody doesn’t analyze everything she says and blame her for some stuff, like the latest leak in the Alaska pipeline and the Saints loss to the Seahawks.
That parking lot was full of actual blood. Including the blood of a Christian child.
Unbelievable.
Why doe s she and anything she says MATTER? She holds no office, is not running for anything yet and is nothing but a narcistic moron with a big mouth. I just don’t see why the media follows her around like a puppy dog.
Because people eat that shit with a spoon. People suck.
Who writes for her? She, I am sure, has/had no clue what Blood Libel is…and if she does, she’s proving to be even more of a moron than imaginable. Oh yeah, God told her to say it, since she took her time to get God’s guidance as she states..yeah, right… Doesn’t that make her kinda…I dunno… crazy? Also, what happened to taking responsibility for yourself. She is proud of her patriotic actions for this Republic. She makes me sick.
She’s a dangerous, ignorant Stalin-wannabee demagogue whom the MSM finds extremely lucrative and entertaining.
Don’t cry for me Sarah-vita.
“What conservatives who protest too much want is to immunize themselves from any criticism whatsoever, and shut down anyone who calls for a reduction in the tone of debate, even if they call out both sides. Rage worked in the last cycle, and at some level conservatives don’t want that arrow taken from their quiver.”
Exactly that! What else will Rush, Beck, Malkin, Coulter, and the rest use to incite rage and fear within their listeners? If they don’t have their crowds worked up they don’t bring in the money from ads or media moguls.
YEP!
Inchoate “Rage worked in the last cycle, and at some level conservatives don’t want that arrow taken from their quiver.”
I devoutly wish that Palin would be ignored by media, including Fire Dog Lake. Frankly, I said early on that is was a mistake to implicate Palin in these murders. One can qualify one’s criticism but when Palin and murder is used in the same sentence, the impression is created that she is being blamed. Yes, all her violent rhetoric was reprehensible but tying this to the murder just muddied the water and gave her another argument for her victim hood. As much as we think she is a mindless twit, this episode will only strengthen her amongst her followers/worshipers.
Rage works to get them elected cause they got nothing else. They have to incite rage and fear to small minded persons in order to have a following.
The rage will only increase in the next cycle as the ragers have a new reason to be incensed. This episode confirms that the liberal media is out to get Palin and those of her ilk.
She appears more angry about being forced to defend her actions, than she is compassionate about anything or anyone.
Blood Libel interesting choice of words I never really heard it before. How many people who are not anti Semites know those word?
We have all made fun of Sarah avoiding answering Katie’s questions about what magazines she reads. We have all laughed at the Star Treck guy reading Sarah’s rants as Beat Poetry, we have felt fear over her hate and lies.
We all assumed she is stupid but maybe she reads the Racist version of Ebonics?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebonics
Poor Sarah. I feel so sorry for her.
Betcha this comment is one from the left that won’t be quoted by the right to show how our rhetoric is just as bad as theirs is. :-)
Could someone ask McCain how he feels about her now?
He helped bring her to the national scene and she took it from there.
ROTFLMA OFF!!!!!! (spit)
Youze so funny.
IF it was so damned innocent, why did that map come down off her website before anybody even brought it up? It’s like the child who breaks something and then runs to tell the parent that s/he didn’t break it before it’s even been discovered.
Without the hate and vitriol what do the conservatives have? Nothing! Unless it’s the corporate media.
Sooner or later, the Iron Law of Celebrity will catch up to Palin. She’ll become a victim–at long last, a victim–of over-exposure; and the public will direct its short attention span to some new, younger, and flashier version of her.
I got some pineapple upside down cake just outta the oven. It is really really sweet. But if you’d like a piece, hold out your plate. *g*
Really do countries with hate crime laws have worse political, abortion doctor, right wing nut job pissed at the government killings that us?
I will grant that America’s huge wealth gap between the rich and the poor is also a factor but still I must disagree.
They got $$$$$ and more $$$$.
Just how many personalities do you have in there?
Yep. See #15. Beck is still on the air but with fewer ad sponsors. Until they get the message that America no longer wants to hear or see that it will continue.
Unfortunately for the country but fortunately for them the country is teeming with small minded people.
Naturally, it’s Politico, so the reporter didn’t ask Sharron Angle, “So, maybe Jared Loughner wasn’t mainlining your and Sarah Palin’s speches. But tell me this: Since you were talking so casually about Second Amendment remedies, explain to me why this doesn’t qualify? The election didn’t go the way he wanted it, so he used a Second Amendment remedy. That’s what you said might happen, and you didn’t seem to think it was such a bad thing. So you must be down with this, right?”
h/t
Ohhhhhhhhh. I love it. Yes, I’d like some. Here’s my plate, pile it on!
and they need the $$$$ to sell an inferior product.
Always entertaining to wach caribou Barbie open her mouth and stick her foot in it.
“Blood Libel” plainly came from her deeply antisemitic writers and handlers.
Stick a fork in her.
The rights we have act in support of each other and are ranked in importance.
First is the right to life without which we can’t enjoy the other rights then liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
The right to bear arms exists to defend our lives first our rights second. A well regulated Militia does not give guns to crazy people because that threatens lives. The right to bear arms is in defense of the right to life first because their is no freedom of speech if your dead.
Giving guns to crazy people and inciting them 24/7 with hate threatens my life and my freedom to speak.
Inciting people with lies and hate to attack people threatens those people’s lives.
The right to bear arms exists in support of the rights of life liberty etc same with free speech they are not greater than the right to life.
Your right to guns and free speech ends where my right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness begin.
Yeah, can we somebody to ask him that? Who would do that? Jon Stewart, maybe? I have no idea who else on MSM would have the balls to do it.
Another courageous move from a brave, gun totin’ he man of a politician:
Conservatism is the refuge of cowards but apparently it’s becoming less of one. Now they’re heading for the hills. While (some) Democrats want to limit access to assault weapons, Republicans just want to ensure their own safety.
Here you go. Small piece goes a long way. And you’d better schedule a dentist appt soon before you dig in. *g*
Talk to Spocko he thinks Rupert is carrying Glen’s show because they have none of the big name sponsors that they can normally get for a show in his timeslot.
Product isn’t inferior from corp POV. Makes ‘em lotsa profits. Buying pols has about an 8,000% (+/-) return.
“Selling” is merely the surface distraction.
“They” use the $$$$$ to steal more $$$$$$$$$.
If it ain’t welded to the floor, it’s out the door.
You remember that “table” that everthing was taken “off” of?
Well, that just went with the last “load”, Bluetoe2.

LMAO! Sarah Palin, meet Mr Shark
Capeheart: wrong tone. wrong words.
And on this day of memorial, I’d note, wrong timing.
But then, we, and the media are talkin’ about her, now aren’t we? You betcha.
Thank you. My point, exactly. IF they’re so intent on “second amendment remedies,” then WHY are the rightwingers running fast and hard AWAY from a Second Amendment “remedy” when it’s actually “employed” by a citizen against “the other side”????
My question is not rhetorical, and I think it should be asked over and over again.
No, Angle/Palin/Glenn/Rush didn’t whisper directly into Loughner’s ear, nor did they give Loughner a gun. But what Loughner did is what these rightwingers have been exhorting their constituents to do for years, but especially over the past 2 years, and in particular, to do it TO Democrats/the other side.
WHY are conservatives running away from this? Isn’t this what they wanted to happen? IF not, then why are they directing citizens to do just what Loughner did?
Scarecrow has a fresh cross-post up: Sharron Angle Rediscovers Her First Amendment Remedies
Ding!
Other than the time the Bush Crime Family made that attempted hit on Raygun, when was the last time someone used a second ammendment remedy on a Republican?
It just doesn’t happen.
Yep, eCAHN, MANY happy “returns” …
Best investmint money can
‘Cuz it makes so many “things” possumal.
(Wish dis was snark)
DW
Well, now. Since I’ve gotten that sugary sweet of Pineapple UPSIDE down cake of Echan’s I can say a few sickenly sweet words too.
Poor, poor, Sarah. I feel sooooo very sorry for her. Oh yeah, let’s not forget Rush and Glenn. Poor Coulter, she is just as victomized as the rest. OMG! M. Malkin. She definitely doesn’t get enough credit either. I feel terrible for them and how they have been regarded. Hate Mongers and Corporate whores is a bad rap, ya know. /s
Okay, I’m sick now. Way too much sweet.
We don’t watch Glenn Beck. No awards for that, we just don’t watch much television or listen to talk radio.
My husband walked into a friend’s house yesterday and they had Glenn Beck on. Per my husband, you could see why folks might believe that stuff, because Beck was so smooth and glib about what he was saying. He has tried to talk with the friend, but he believes and nothing we could say could change that belief.
The friend considers me the “extreme liberal”. You’re allowed to laugh at that. As I’m more blunt than my husband, he tries to convince my husband, but has given up on me. The Republicans have gone just too far for my husband, so there is no chance of success there.
I agree with Spocko. 100%!
I think Rupert is carrying Glenn’s show because it is a “loss leader.”
Most of Beck’s sponsors have fled Beck’s weirdly insane ravings, but, more’s the pity, Beck draws a giant audience, who most likely continue to keep their dial set to Fake after Beck’s weird show is over. Plus I guess Rupert gets a cut of Beck’s Goldline scam, which seems to be making a ton of money from Beck’s credulous rube$$$$.
Laughing. Too. Hard. To. Type………
Just read
Sarah knows that Reagan lied completely made up a Chicago welfare mom living on food stamps driving a Caddy and eating steak with fake government benefits?
Sarah knows how much hate that statement created? How many African Americans have been beat up or killed over the decades by people who believed Reagan’s lies?
Lies endlessly retold on the same Hate Media that spreads Sarah’s lies? Lies the Main Stream Media hacks Never Expose as they watch people die.
You’re trying to convince the wrong person. Hence my characterization of him.
blood libel? Sarah sports a lead bible.
Pathetic. No accounting for ignorant, self-centered, accountability deflecting, MSM manufactured idiots.
A good question, and one for which I have no answer other than the one you name in your post: Reagan.
If the conservatives’ hate speech doesn’t “do anything,” then why is it that only Democrats/liberals are attacked?
Has the MainStream Media mentioned yet that the Murderer read a racist, anti Semite news letter? Its been a few days since that news got out but I have not heard any mention.
And the MSM wonders why people go to the blogs for news?
Right, the “people” have more faith in the corporations than in “their” government. Suckers!!!
It is a type of mind control or brainwashing. I don’t know how else to explain it but my neighbors are the same. They think the repugs are their saviors yet they get absolutely nothing in return except more hate and fear.
Heh.
Right on, David.
There was a blog post here yesterday quoting from a German publication, which pointed out that Giffords is Jewish, and that Loughner had read some anti-semitic stuff before going on his rampage. Apparently Germany has some deep concerns about what’s going on the USA, in general, but this post (too lazy to find it, sorry) basically stated that the hate speech being used by conservatives here is waaaaay to similar to what happened before the rise of Hitler, and Germany’s advice to the USA is to (to paraphrase and use my own words) “wake up before it’s too late & dial back the incendiary language.” There was acknowledgement in this article for how powerful language can be in motivating people.
LOL! His biggest complaint is that they are investigating him! Stupid.
Two exceptions are George Lincoln Rockwell, American Nazi, and George Wallace. Otherwise the bullets are reserved for Democrats or the “left.”
The weak minded and the fearful have always been easy to manipulate like that. This has stopped being the land of the brave and started being the pasture of the sheep.
Of course! Like Palin, this is all about him.
First you demonize the opposition thereby making the final solution inevitable if not palatable.
In which more of the crazies will fall out in support. I hate that, but it is true. What I find more amuzing is how those in DC are hunting ways to get around the monster they created. King is one big example.
Part of it, I think, is that these people (most of my family are super rightwing fundamentalists) are “in so deep” with their conservative ideology that it HAS to be very scary and frightening to actually admit how completely and utterly WRONG this all is.
That’s not to say that the “traditional” conservative viewpoints/opinions are “bad.” In fact, the “old” conservative notions had many good things about them, esp in terms of *some* of the fiscal conservatism. But as we know, the present day conservatives have moved far, far, far away from that “old time GOP” and they’re out their on the fringe and becoming ever more facistic.
So, it would be very hard to “wake up” and admit to yourself that nearly everything you believe is a complete phoney sham, that you’ve been totally lied to, that your “gods” have feet of clay, and that, in fact, you’re being utterly ripped off by morally reprehensible crooks who never had your better interests in mind at all.
Hard to wake up to reality and *think for yourself* esp when you are an authoritarian *wanting* “big daddy” to think for you & tell you what to do.
I believe that’s why so many conservatives become so enraged when a liberal tries to talk them in an adult fashion. It’s just too scary to admit that they’ve been “had.”
Yes, of course. That is the objective, and that’s another reason why it’s so hard to have a “reasoned” conversation with many conservatives. Good point.
It is definitely brain-washing. They all say the same words and concepts. It is probably our nation’s biggest cult.
Her delivery seemed to lack any compassion. Maybe she should take lessons from Boehner.
“The American people aren’t stupid” is always the preamble or the subtext, isn’t it? Let it be You-Know-Whose’s epitaphs.
Yes. Agree on the old time Conservatives. There is no such thing today, they have all been put to bed and replaced by corporatist. I can say the same about my party in DC as well.
Palin is a sociopath, who doesn’t know how to have compassion. That’s been evident since the beginning of her sadly meteoric rise.
Notice that they’re focusing on covering their own asses rather than making things safer for us? Can’t be pissing off the NRA, no way! Not in these days of citizens united.
It’s definitely true about both parties being corrupt corporatists, but many on the left can see what’s happening and act accordingly (albeit some are still asleep at the wheel). But many on the right appear quite incapable of “waking up” and really grasping what’s going on.
We can thank McCain for bringing her to National attention. That Maverick is always up to no good. ;-)
They’re still being bought off by all that sweet sweet payola from the guns ‘n ammo industry. That’s more to the point of who they don’t want to piss off. And they don’t give a sh*t about making citizens “more safe.”
That is what is most horrifying! They are running from the monsters they created!
In a sense, I think that they’re not really “running” from the monster; they want the monster to still be there to keep *all citizens* fearful. So they are more or less denying that the “monster” really exists. Certainly they are taking no responsibility for the power of their words, and believe me, they KNOW how powerful their words are. It’s not accidental.
Yes, indeed. Speaking of blood libel, one certainly can’t get blood out of a stone.
Speaking of Senator Gall and Wormwood, he’s certainly made himself scarce since the shooting.
I wish Jonah would ask her in his best Charles Gibson voice if she agrees that the use of term “blood-libel” is offensive.
But sadly I would imagine her response would be, “In what respect
CharlieJonah?”blood libel? Sarah sports a lead bible.
She also lives in a bubble and speaks babble.
heh… yeah, noticed that, too. guess, though, we’ll see some statement somewhere along the line with McCan’t stating how thoroughly he supports his Frankenstein monster, no matter what. Hope it gauls him.
FGS, I wish someone would point out the difference between expressing opinions and wishing someone dead.
It was quite illuminating to hear the very type of objectionable vitriol in a very minimal role play by Mark Shields on the newshour. Just hearing it in that context was a stark contrast to their usual style of discourse. There was was also the added bonus of Mark’s point that when you demonize your opponent, there is no possibility of coming together in agreement ever. Because when two opposing parties do agree, then one is “sleeping with the enemy”. A traitor. Or whatever. It was very well done imo.
Given the fact that the targeted victim of the violence had previously called out Palin for crossing the line for her violence inciting map and comments, this is especially despicable.
What if Palin opened her mouth and no one reported on it? What a wonderful world it would be!
Indeed a salient point, and it’s been a crux of the whole issue for a long time. The rightwing has set up a “no-win” situation, which has resulted in their constituents believing that ONLY they are “correct,” and no matter what Democrats/the left does, it is, by definition, “wrong.”
It has certainly inured to the benefit of the elites who use this strategy to rip the peons off. But when the rightwing has been brainwashed to look at politics as if it’s sports teams, this is one of the results.
Forgive me, onitgoes, but I imagine the word you want is “galls”, however the term you used, would probabaly be even moe upsetting to McCain as de gaul-ling would put him right “up” there with “french” fries as being un-American in the worst possible, French-ified, way.
;~DW
Indeed, but Rupert Murdoch, and his powerful elite buddies, have made sure to give her a very loud and powerful voice. Well, I’ll be clearer: it’s NOT Palin’s “voice” that we are bashed with. It’s the “voice” of Palin’s powerful overlords. That said, focusing solely on Palin, the person, is pointless. The point is that Palin is the mouthpiece for the powerful elites who have carpetbagged our nation. We have to pay attention, no matter what.
Thanks. I willingly stand corrected. Merci!
I enjoyed it, onitgoes, and got a fine laugh, so I am, seriously, indebted to you.
DW
Put yourself in Sarah’s shoes (hey, don’t give me that LQQK): How would you feel and how would you react if Jane Hamsher said this about you: “Sarah Palin’s political career is probably toast, due in large part to the fact that the GOP doesn’t want her messing up their plans for the next Presidential election like she did the 2010 Senate races.”
heh… glad to provide a bright spot of humor on an otherwise not so funny topic… we all need to have a good laugh sometimes.
onwards… I must away. Be good to one another out there in the trenches!
See you soon, onitgoes.
DW
Anyone know if there’s anything to the rumors about the kingfishers in Alaska saying they wouldn’t prosecute Palin — something about how she bought her home? — if she resigned and beat a hasty retreat? Ain’t that obstruction of justice?
GDay, DW. Just delurking to say that I’ve enjoyed the discourse this morning. I’m swinging in and out of the Lake, whilst doing some things around the house and stuff. (Baked apples with cinnamon, anyone?)
Keep it up, dogs.
-Zach Osler (reportedly Jared Loughner’s best high-school friend) in ABC “Good Morning America” interview
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/jared-loughners-friend-says-suspect-did-not-watch-tv-disliked-the-news_b48040#
If I were her, I’d be looking for a sales job. She can certainly convert weak minds, and at least she’d be productive.
She doesn’t want to get it and doesn’t NEED to get it. Her hard core base of supporters love her more with every ignorant assholish utterance. She is the patron saint of aggressive ignorance. If she didn’t exist the media would have to invent her.
Of course, words and images cannot influence people to act. That’s why there are no commercials on TV right?
I would like to believe that she is intellectually incapable of truly understanding what she is doing, it is difficult to believe that she is doing this with intent.
There were empty words of sympathy for the victims, devoid of emotion, there were plenty of indignant words for those whom she perceives as criticizing her. What a great way of limiting freedom of speech for those who are not “with her”.
She interprets a call for toning down language that can easily incite impressionable individuals as an attack on herself.
I did notice that those who criticize her are those who “embrace evil and call it good.” I never knew that it was evil to call for unity, and ask that people do not use violent language and images, considering that there are many unstable people in this country, who are easily pushed over the edge.
I wonder how William Krystol let the “blood libel” thing slide by? He is one of Sister Sarah’s mentors and prime promoters. I suspect that as in the case of Shrub, he knows she is an idiot, but useful idiots in power are central to his agenda. So he has no doubt done a forehead slap in the privacy of his office, but if tens of thousands of dead Iraqis did not chasten or deter him, why would a winger going all 2nd Amendment on some Congresswoman with a ‘D’ after her name give him pause?
Both Alan Dershowitz and Jeff Goldberg are letting Miz Caribou Barbie slide…
Why Sarah Palin’s Use of ‘Blood Libel’ Is a Great Thing
Ignoring her won’t diminish her power or the power of her ideology, though. It has to be confronted, because otherwise, silence will be seen as assent in their mindset.
That’s not surprising. Sarah Palin seems infinitely willing to keep the Israeli gravy train going and that seems to be Dershowitz’s biggest concern. If intellectual honesty and basic notions of human rights don’t matter to Alan Dershowitz, why would Mooselini’s misappropriations matter to him either?
