Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi were in the room when Gabrielle Giffords opened her eyes last night, less than a week after the tragic shooting that killed six and gravely wounded her. In the background of the commentary of this event, there has been this improbable success story, as Giffords’ condition continues to improve, beyond the expectations of even her doctors.
Sen. Gillibrand told the story on Air Force One last night.
And we just were so excited, so we were telling her how proud we were of her and how she was inspiring the whole nation with her courage and with her strength. And then Debbie and I started joking about all the things we were going to do after she got better. And we were holding her hand and she was responding to our hand-holding. She was rubbing our hands and gripping our hands so we could — she could really — we knew she could hear and understand what we were saying and she moved her leg, and so we knew she was responding. And the more we joked about what we were going to do, she started to open her eyes literally.
And then you have to recognize, her eyes hadn’t opened — we didn’t know that — and so she started to struggle. And one of her eyes is covered with a bandage because it was damaged in the gunfire. So her eye is flickering. And Mark sees this and gets extremely excited. And we didn’t — I didn’t know what that meant. And so he said, Gabby, open your eyes, open your eyes. And he’s really urging her forward. And the doctor is like perking up and everyone is coming around the bed. And she’s struggling and she’s struggling and it’s a good — we couldn’t figure it out, maybe 30 seconds, where she’s really trying to get her eyes open, like doing this, this, this.
And then she finally opens her eyes and you could she was like desperately trying to focus and it took enormous strength from her. And Mark could just — can’t believe it. I mean, he’s so happy. And we’re crying because we’re witnessing something that we never imagined would happen in front of us.
And so Mark says, he says — he said, Gabby, if you can see me, give us the thumbs up, give us the thumbs up. And so we’re waiting and we’re waiting and –
REPRESENTATIVE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ: And she didn’t at first.
SENATOR GILLIBRAND: And we just thought, okay — and you could watch — when you’re watching her eyes, she’s really trying to focus. Like you could see she hadn’t opened her eyes in days. And then instead of giving the thumbs up, she literally raises her whole arm like this — like this. It was unbelievable. And then she reaches out and starts grabbing Mark and is touching him and starts to nearly choke him — she was clearly trying to hug him.
And so like — she was — it was such a moment. And we were just in tears of joy watching this and beyond ourselves, honestly. And then Mark said, you know, touch my ring, touch my ring. And she touches his ring and then she grabs his whole watch and wrist. And then the doctor was just so excited. He said, you don’t understand, this is amazing, what’s she’s doing right now, and beyond our greatest hopes.
If you put aside everything else, you just marvel at the strength of the human survival instinct.
More from CNN.
…At today’s briefing, her doctors say that Giffords can now dangle off the side of the bed and move both legs on command.

Thank you, David.
Filled with joy for Rep. Giffords and her husband!
Wow. But we have to be careful not to Politicize her recovery. /preemptive snark.
I’m sure that Erik Erikson will thank Jesus and the right will want to know that she still supports guns and people having them and using them to shoot people.
If James Brady was shot today, he would have to apologize to John Hinckley. He wouldn’t create the Brady Center Against Gun Violence but would create the James Brady Citizen Arming and Shooting Center. That would fit with the rights demands that the answer to gun violence is more guns. And the answer to people who are against more guns is gun training.
BTW, I wonder what John Hinckley has to say about this shooting?
I believe in miracles…she’s one of them. Just fantastic.
Indeed. It’s going to be a long road for her, but every day it feels like there’s progress.
This is fantastic news.
I’d say it’s more a testimony to the remarkable plasticity and resilience of the human brain than survival instincts myself. Having lived with a child that had a brain tumor and watching his recovery… it really is remarkable how our brains can recover from major physical insults.
This is beyond spectacular progress. Go Gabrielle! Go docs, med and supporting folks! WOO HOO!!
It feels like her progress really contributes to the larger healing…So much to be grateful for in the midst of such tragedy.
Wow, just damn.
GO GABS!!!!!
Such a heartwarming story. I cried, trying to imagine her attempts to focus and grasp what was happening around her.
2nd day of the semester. Got another student who tells me he had a traumatic brain injury from his 3rd tour. Of my last three, two didn’t even last the semester, with one becoming a very sad, time-consuming kid, who I really wanted to help, but couldn’t. Aaargh!
The doctor must have misspoken. He must have meant to say ‘I don’t understand…’. I mean, consider who’s in the room, you know? Great doctors for Gabrielle, great friends, great good cheer all around.
My husband suffered a major stroke in 2006 which affected the left side of his brain and caused bleeding on the brain. He was in the hospital for a total of 7 weeks, part of that time in rehab. Obviously, he’s much older than Mr. Giffords, but he has recovered to the point where he no longer needs a wheelchair and walks with a single stick cane. It’s my understanding that when the left side of the brain is damaged, as in the case of Rep. Giffords, it affects speech and swallowing. My husband was tube fed for all of the 7 weeks but has been able to eat and digest food since he got home from the hospital a few years ago. His right arm has been affected and he will probably never regain its use again. I mention this only because amazing things can be done these days. It has brought my husband back from the depths. One can only hope with her age and her determination, Rep. Giffords will have a successful recovery.
Peace.
I saw a bit on CNN about the doctors clarifying that they use an assessment scale for recovering patients like Giffords and she is literally blasting up the scale, exceeding their expectations, every day, starting with no brain swelling, the efforts to communicate, and now this remarkable activity followed by the ability to begin physical therapy less than a week after the shooting! That’s why the doctors are so happy. They would be saying good things about her recovery even if she were improving much less quickly. But this kind of speed is amazing to everyone. If you know anything about brain injuries they are very treacherous even with much less grave wounds. This really is miraculous.
Praise the gods and goddesses and thanks to all the spirits.
Such good news. May all be well for her. I was saddened by the little girl’s death, you could just see how her eyes sparkled. A loss without reason. So this is something to be so joyful about.
Yes, thanks, David for this presentation. Honest to god it’s so much better than the movie or TV version that’ll be made. It’s so much better than any movie about recovery and love than I’ve ever seen. Wow. And out loud! I’m (we all are) happy as hell and I can’t wait to hear more and more!
This is so heartwarming after days of sadness. Sometimes things do work out right. Go, Gabby.
Keep trying.. I know you wish you could do more but keep trying.. ET you Do help them even if they don’t succeed or understand at first…
Immediate neuro-physio therapy is important. I’m sure they immediately did a little with Giffords yesterday when her eyes popped open. However, even with delays in receiving such therapy, the therapy is still effective. The Japanese give this to their elders proactively in the form of a PDA-based game last I read. General health state plus circulatory health, tissue regeneration rates, yaty, yaty. Multivariate plus the double blind model doesn’t capture the whole story about the power of mind plus will power. Looks Giffords has lots in the will power department. This is up there with someone flat-lining on the vitals, being declared clinically dead one minute and then they stagger off the gurney 15 minutes later. This is the stuff of movies, folks. { Snoopy dance }
This made me cry – of course I have been on the verge of tears since Saturday so it doesn’t take much. Thanks David.
This is so so wonderful, so hugely unexpected so early in her recovery. Thank you for writing this, it is joyful!
Thanks, David.
What an amazing woman. I can’t begin to imagine how her family must feel.
It made me tear up, and I’ve only cried 3 or 4 times in the last 10 years.
I read about it earlier, and also got teary. This is incredibly wonderful!
Wow. This speed of recovery really is miraculous. To begin with, the fact that Congresswoman Giffords’ brain didn’t swell is a miracle. But all of this progress she’s making … I teared up, too, from joy. A bit of joy in the midst of great sadness.
Heard Nancy describe it on the teevee (to Keith?) last night. She didn’t go into this detail, but did mention the Girl Power in the room, sounds like she wasn’t just kidding!
Awesome news.
It feels like you’re really sad and frustrated you couldn’t help. Thank you for caring and for trying.
I am SOOOO happy to hear this. Good for her.
Thanks for sharing your success story.
I am pleased Giffords is hanging in there. As a physician myself, I think it is imprudent for any physician (and that includes the Dr. Guptas of the world) to speculate on overall prognosis this early in the game. Brain injuries are dicey, to say the least. What does bother me, though, is the fact that dozens of people are killed every day in this country by guns. Many are poor and/or people of color. Who speaks at their funerals? No president or senator, that I know of, was in attendance for the funerals of those mowed down at VA Tech. Is a congress person’s life more valuable than theirs? And will Obama decide to grow a pair and push for rational discourse on gun access in this country? Will he address the plight of our states suffocating under this Depression and being forced to cut vital services that help push people toward acts of desperation? The dots are all connected. But I fear the only dot our elected officials care about is their own ass.
This is wonderful miraculous news.
and Sen. Gillibrand thought that getting the 9/11 Healthcare bill passed was exciting. This is an awesome story.
The doctor has a strong point. While it is excellent to see the progress that Congresswoman Giffords is making, exaggeration of the importance of what she is accomplishing is a distortion in its own way. I was thinking that about the Obama speech as well, and on reflection I do not think it was as good a speech as it could have been, even given the significant failures of this administration.
Okay, I am being stodgy and stubborn, but here’s the comparison I would make. Isn’t our focus on Representative Giffords as she recovers somewhat of the nature of the right wing’s concern for the comatose woman whose case was so hyped that it came into the media spotlight and took on a political role? I know that Congresswoman Giffords is a public figure already, so some of that is unavoidable, but we need to let her doctors concentrate on her, and not on what they are going to say in front of cameras.
Another comparison springs to mind, and that is of the tv commercial where the guy says “Gee, I was only buzzed” and everything seems to turn out all right because he really wants it to. We need to remember, as the doctor points out, that everything is not all right, that there are real issues here, not just rhetoric. We’d really like to stop our soul searching and start cheering, but we really can’t, we mustn’t.
Continue healing, Gabrielle Giffords, and God bless you. We also have to do the same.
