Dick Armey basically jumped on the tea party bandwagon when he saw how Republicans could ride them to a return to the majority. But Dick Armey doesn’t really give a damn about whatever counts as core tea party “issues.” He just seeks raw power and the ability to engage in some profit-taking for his rich contributor friends. When the tea partiers actually start asking for follow-through on the issues they care about, that’s where Armey draws the line.
Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey urged freshman Republicans and the new House GOP leadership to temper themselves so as not to make the mistakes he and others made following their historic takeover of the chamber in 1994.
“We didn’t manage our enthusiasms and the fact of the matter is it ended up getting us in trouble,” said Armey in an interview as part of Advice for the 112th Congress: A POLITICO video series with former members of Congress.
He cited specifically the budget stand-offs in 1995 and 1996 which prompted the temporary closures of some federal government offices – and did serious political damage to the congressional Republicans that took the blame for it.
“[W]e ended up with that horrible nightmare called ‘the Government shutdown,’ which didn’t need to have happened and would not have happened if we had had a better management of our—oh, of our appreciation for the fact that we were the first majority in 40 years,” said Armey.
These guys are such frauds, and I think the monster they’ve created won’t stand for it this time around. Armey isn’t totally wrong that an extreme conservative course would lead to electoral ruin – that’s how I understand him – but when you elect a bunch of extreme conservatives, don’t be surprised when they seek out extreme conservative ideas.
And as for the “cooler heads will prevail” theory, when you have Dick Armey on his knees pleading with the forces he “leads,” it’s problem time.

Does this mean that Glenn beck will tone it down too?
Well, Dick, if you lie down with dogs, you can get fleas. So, your miserable, elitist, hate-filled GOP got in bed with yet another bunch of hatriots. Gee, and you’re worried….
Dick’s problem was he under-estimated the raw fury that exists out there…! 8-(
Dick,
Met him once. Total fraud. He misses being with the “in” crowd, so high school.
are you FKM?? never…
Goodness… It’s been like forever since I’ve crossed threads with ya, IV…! Aloha…! ;-)
Which do you think will have more repercussions; Foggy Bottom’s cables, or, the soon to be released Elmer files…? ;-)
I don’t know….the ‘baggers were pretty stupid to begin with letting themselves be co-opted by Armey’s group. All they have to do is figure out a plausible sounding rationalization why it would really stick it to the libruls if they behaved in a rational manner. On the other hand, it will have to be very well designed and probably resented to the ‘baggers by somebody other than Armey.
Ha! Oh I’m laughing, this is so funny. It was just bound to happen when the Republicans weren’t in the minority any more.
I knew that the debt ceiling fight would strain the relationship, but I thought it was Korea Free Trade that would finally tear it. So funny to see things go south so quickly.
Oh my sides hurt.
I’m wondering what the lead GOBaggers (Armey, Tim Phillips, etc.) have planned for the moment when the faithful realize…
They are too smart to NOT have seen this coming.
I anxiously await the “Republicans In Disarray” reporting from the Media./s
You can bet they have a plan and you can bet the liberals will be blamed.
This is going to be like taming a rabid dog. The baggers are “locked and loaded” and ready to take on anyone who crosses them. Good luck, Dick.
It could be as far-fetched as an escape hatch (‘McConnell & Boehner promised us…’) or as simple as ‘Piss off.’
Whatever it is, you can bet it was tested and tweeked before they roll it out.
Yeah, Armey has been here before.
He’s a profiteer and a cock-fight promoter, but he remembers his history.
*heh* ‘Piss off’ has a similar consonance as ‘f*cking r*t*rds’, right…? ;-)
sad to say david, you over estimate “the tea party”
they are marionettes, all it will take is a tea party leader sponsored by the koch brothers to change their position and bing, position changed
while “the tea party” in the streets do seam like ideologues, they are in fact brainless puppets, they have a hand up their butt and they will do as they are commanded
Roughly the same vein. My guess is he will split the difference. Something like ‘Tearing down the Socialist construct of the Obama administration is going to take some time. They designed it to be impenetrable, but we’re doing our darndest…’
Spot on. This describes the problem as I see it. The whole Tea Party movement is based on lies and misconceptions to begin with. I’ll bet out of any 20 random selected tea baggers, there might be a 50 percent chance of finding just one who even knows what year the Constitution they constantly and erroneously invoke was ratified and adopted. They are malleable, not well informed and almost a mob. Armey and his ilk are trying to walk a very fine line with them between political party wing and out of control mob. Are they gullible enough to remain under control? I think there’s a pretty good chance of that actually because their whole movement is based on them being easily lied to and manipulated. But if they get out of control….stand the eff by because they’ll sweep the Republicans aside as the disappointed “values” crowd never could.
Gingrich and Armey are wasting their time conniving for a seat at the Tea Party Patriot head table.
It ain’t gonna happen.
and not one of them will know the original boston tea party was a revolt against a relaxation of taxes, not a revolt against raising taxes
not one of them will know it
I don’t know about Gingrich, but isn’t Armey already at the head of that table? Isn’t he the go-to guy when the majors want someone to come on and spout a little?
I’m truly surprised at how muted the response has been so far to the onset of the Great Recession… Maybe the Mayans were onto something after all…! 8-(
Yeah, they drip irony, do they not? The Indemnity Act would convey no meaning to them.
I think Chuck Shepherd is about to reclassify this story as No Longer Weird.
That’s just when this particular long count ends. If anybody thinks the world is actually coming to an end, I invite them to give me all their stuff. :)
I agree, Margaret, this has already been anticipated and planned for. And in any case, as angry and impulsive as most baggers are, misguidance is easy: just point them in the direction of their ingrained bigotries. Their predispositions are simple and endlessly exploitable. With a hater, there is no point too far, nothing too low or too vicious. Which is why all this now, now, let’s all just simmer down and get reasonable is either inconceivably stupid or unforgivably manipulative.
Every calendar has to stop somewhere.
I’d rather rely on Edgar Cayce than the Mayans, myself.
Most people who “believe in the Mayan prophecies” have no idea what they say/are. They just think the world’s coming to an end. Which, of course, it could; just a few more oil and Coexit dumps will turn the sea into a cesspool.
While not a Christain I could hope to see His return and the look son my evangelical neighbors face as I got on the bus while they gesticulated. ;^)
I wish I understood the fury of the Tea Partyers. They are mostly retired and well-off ex-Bush twenty-percenters. What do they have to be mad about? They’ve got Medicare coverage. The tax cuts for the rich got extended. The Obama administration isn’t prosecuting any Bushies, not even the torture memo writers. Indeed, most of Bush’s executive power grabs and unconstitutional programs have been expanded.
There are 15 million people who are justifiably furious, but they have not been able to hold rallies because they are too busy filling out job applications!
I think I’ll not rely on prophets, seers or mathematically limited calenders. As for the rapture, I figure I win either way. If it happens and the righteous are truly the ones raptured up, then I’m going to paradise, if it’s the hard core, everybody hating bible thumpers who are right, then they are going. I’m rid of them forever and I get a lot of free stuff.
Yep. Bigotry and prejudice is such an effective dog whistle and those lessons are never learned…or too easily forgotten.
I personally think it’ll be a shift in the magnetic poles, which is a definitive mathematical probability, and, would literally rock our world…! Jez saying…!
*heh* I survived Y2K…! ;-)
Yeah, that’s going to suck hard immediately and for weeks, months or years afterward, depending on how suddenly it is. And that’s not a probability, that’s going to happen:
Me to me to…
Nothing much will happen. The Kochs & Armey will blame the teh eeeevul liebruls & the dirty lazy rip off minorities & bang! Case closed. We’re not talking about thoughtful or analytical poeple. They’ re easily manipulated by inciting them against the usual “enemies.”. Duh
What do the baggerz have to be mad about?? Eff all. They’ve been sold a bunch of baloney & they enjoy their victimization to liberals & minorities. Most of them are doing just fine. They’ve been poisoned & lied to incessantly for the past 30 years by RushGlenn & rightwing thinktanks & Fox & their churches. A steady diet of hatred makes anyone dysfunctional & irrational.
Dick Armey doesn’t have anything to worry about. Republicans only took flak for the government shutdown because Clinton called their bluff and made them do it.
This President doesn’t work that way – his policy is to capitulate to the “hostage-takers” so that the “hostage doesn’t get hurt”. Obama’s self-described policy is to give the Republicans whatever they want to keep them from doing whatever they’re threatening. Debt ceiling, government shutdown, whatever.
TBogg is upstairs!
Michele Bachmann’s Jesus-Lovin’ Barry-Bashin’ Batshit Crazy Hour
The reason the teabaggers are so angry is that a black man was elected president – let’s be truthful. Obama was inaugurated Jan. 21, 2008 and the teabaggers held their first public demonstrations in mid-February, protesting with signs that read TEA = Taxed Enough Already. They had been whipped up by the passage of TARP in the early days of the previous October, and their demonstrations included a protest against the bank bailout.
How quickly they forget – almost half the American public believes TARP was passed under Obama* (this statistic applies to Independents and Democrats as well as Republicans). That the Bush administration pushed TARP through congress was easily forgotten, but the fact that a black man inhabits the White House is impossible to ignore.

Armey’s being rational…though only compared to Tea Party ‘tards. I disagree wthe characterization of his motives…though I dislike the man.
Hopefully, they’ll ignore him.
The House is a volatile place and the House Repugs could be gone over rocking the boat on the debt ceiling, and other maneuvers.
780,000 years ago? That’s some sharp observin’!
No. More like the Tea Party got into bed with the scum sucking p.o.s. Rethugs like Armey.
Army thought he could rule over the Tea Party knuckle heads, and set the agenda. I hope they drive him crazy(er). I’m really suprised he is an economist, but so is Aurthe Laffer, and we are living his nightmare.
