MADISON, WI (FDL) – I’ve explained the mechanics of the State Senate and Assembly votes, and the atmosphere inside the occupied Capitol. Now let’s turn to the politics, which have gotten very interesting over the past 24 hours.
The prank phone call to Gov. Scott Walker by a man pretending to be billionaire industrialist David Koch has become a real tipping point. I don’t know how the national media has reacted to it, but the state media was seriously aggressive in yesterday’s inexplicable press conference.
The first questioner asked Walker whether he could be trusted to negotiate in good faith, given he had discussed with “Koch” methods of tricking the Democrats into coming back to the Capitol building, and after he alluded to having considered bringing “troublemakers” into the crowds.
“For us I think it’s real simple. First I want to say I take phone calls all the time,” Walker said, before being interrupted by a reporter in the crowd who yelled, “Not mine!.” Walker continued: “I’ve talked to individual taxpayers across the state. As I said last night I’ve listened to people both pro and con in terms of the e-mails I’ve received. But bottom line, the things I’ve said privately are the same things I’ve said all along.”
Regarding the idea of planting agitators in the crowds, Walker said: “We’ve had all sorts of options brought to us by staff and lawmakers and people across the state, but as you heard we dismissed them.”
Regarding the idea of bringing the Democrats into the Capitol to talk, only to have the Republicans use their presence in the building to declare the Senate in session for the budget — as Walker said in the call, “I’m not negotiating”. Walker said in the presser: “I’m willing to talk, but ultimately I think it has to lead to a vote. I don’t think that’s a trick.”
This aggressive attitude can be seen in today’s local newspaper articles on the subject. My personal favorite, from the Journal-Sentinel, entitled “Walker devoted 20 minutes to Koch call. Why?”
When a prankster called pretending to be billionaire David Koch, Gov. Scott Walker took 20 minutes out of his packed schedule to provide an unguarded briefing on the political stand-off in Madison.
No wonder: Koch is one of the biggest financial backers of conservative causes in the country, including Walker’s campaign for governor.
David Koch (pronounced “coke”), the man impersonated in the phone call to Walker, and his brother Charles control Koch Industries Inc., a privately held company with estimated revenue of $100 billion a year.
Last year, Koch Industries’ political action committee contributed $43,000 to Walker, the largest donation the Republican candidate received from a corporate committee, and the group’s largest gift in Wisconsin.
The connections between the Kochs and Walker can no longer be denied, and local reporters are making the further connections to the financial interests that would benefit corporate interests in the budget repair bill, including the Kochs. Democrats are pouncing, with one calling for Walker’s resignation. Both Campaign Money Watch and Common Cause want investigations into Walker’s conduct. State bloggers – who have been amazing throughout this ordeal – set up a “Scott Walker hotline”, a toll-free number that people not named David Koch can call to express their opinions to Gov. Walker. You can call at 1-888-882-7921.
On top of this, the protests are spreading across the state. Local union leaders say that today will see the biggest protests outside of Madison in the state’s history, with dozens planned. I may get out to one or two today.
There’s a definite siege mentality around Governor Walker right now. He has turned the tide of public opinion all by himself. The endgame may not come for a while, but Walker is losing his hold over the situation. He may not crack, but his Republican allies, particularly in the Senate, may succumb to the pressure from state media and the public. There was a rumor floating around that a few Senate Republicans would block the budget repair bill in the next day or two, or at least announce their opposition to the bill in its current form. I’m not sure of the sourcing on that. But I can see how they’d want this to end – it’s become very debilitating for the GOP in the state.

Thanks for the inside info David
Walker is becoming a GOP headache
the other big issue, is the Koch brothers getting sweet heart deals “no bid contracts” because they gave to Walker Campaign
During the coverage of these Wisconsin protests, I have been most struck by DNC chair Tim Kaine’s support of public employee unions. As governor of Virginia, he refused to support collective bargaining for the public sector. He mirrored exactly the stance of Governor (now Senator) Warner. In fact, in 1993, a Democratic governor (Wilder) codified Virginia’s long-standing criminalization of collective bargaining for public employees.
So far no one has asked (at least not in a public setting) how Kaine can support rights for the citizens of Wisconsin that are illegal in Virginia.
Kaine is probably planning a run for the Senate, and if he wins, Virginia will have two Democratic union-busters in the Senate. If he loses, we will have a Democratic union-buster and a Republican union-buster (former governor Allen) in the Senate.
If anyone sees Kaine, please ask how he justifies collective bargaining in Wisconsin but prohibits it in Virginia.
Yes!
Walker seems hard-headed, but if “his” R legislators are a little more realistic, this outrageous union-busting tactic may fail.
This, of course, is our best hope: that, like Walker and Christie and the people pushing “death for miscarriages” bills, Republicans always overreach.
They think they got a mandate for stuff they didn’t even campaign on, when all it was was people wanted to send a message, they wanted something different, and they only had one choice in our 2-party system.
I suppose it’s too much to hope that he’s had a genuine change of heart, possibly from watching the thousands of voters turning out?
(Pardon my snark, pls, tejanarusa.) I think “change of plan” is more appropriate; stripping public employees of collective bargaining doesn’t seem to indicate much of a heart.
I just love it when a Republican elected official decides it’s time to over-reach… they always do it badly. And then it backfires on them. I expect that to happen this time, too.
Yeah in my opinion it’s too much. The idea of having to vote for Tim Kaine again positively turns my stomach. If he and Allen are my choices I’ll write someone in.
This just in.
Thanks David.
Heh! Was just coming over to post that here.
While the national media is torn between “oh, that Ian Murphy’s so mean!” and “whoa — look how subservient Walker sounds, talking to the guy he thinks is Koch!”, the Wisconsin media and people aren’t letting themselves be distracted by hissy kabuki over how the call came to be, but are instead focusing on Walker’s own unedited comments, comments which he proudly owns, showing his stupidly, his venality, and his nastiness.
Whodathunk that
flyover countryer, Wisconsin, would lead us out of the wilderness of the last 30 yrs?Heh, that crossed my mid as I typed it….but went with the optimistic slant, for a change.
I don’t live in Virginia, but I’d vote for anyone other than George Allen, even if the DEMs had to import Eric Massa or Alvin Greene.
Unbelievable. The governor of the Law and Order party considering planting agents provocateurs in the state capitol.
If we’re lucky, he’ll hang on long enough to drag the entire GOP down the rathole with him.
you gotta love lib signage.
they spelled “wh*re” correctly in WI. Good on ya, cheeseheads!
What about option 3?
Very rarely does the American public gets a chance to peek behind the curtain of this kabuki theatre we call democracy. That phone call alone should be sufficient evidence that Walker is a lier and disingenuous at best. Even if one just listened to the tone of the conversation, that the furthest thing from Walker’s mind was the public welfare of Wisconsin as a whole. Thus defaulting in his duties as governor of the state.
im glad something has swayed the balance of this fight. We certainly have received no reinforcement or encouragement from our elected democratic leaders or even some non elected decomcratic leaders like clinton, gore, or dean. We need some new leaders starting with every person in this country who is an employee as opposed to an employer.
*gah* WSJ has an AEI hack and a Heritage hack pen this hacktacular POS…
The Public Worker Gravy Train
Yep, I’d like to see those elected public employees take a hit to their pensions and health benefits. see how they like it. Are Bush/Cheney/Clinton/Gore all collecting their pensions? Like they need it? I wonder.
ordered another pizza for protesters last night – to honor Ian Murphy
Thanks for your coverage, David.
Scott Walker just blew his Koch cover. His unprecedented radical assault on public employees has nothing to do with the budget deficit (a deficit caused by the $200 million tax cut for the rich he just passed). It’s about denying basic rights to organized labor and state workers and punishing those that traditionally do not vote Republican. It’s political war, and it must be stopped.
http://www.sunstateactivist.org
One thing is for certain, Mr. Murphy will not be buying this March 17th.
Thanks for what Police Chief Wray from Madison said about being “uncomfortable” with what Walker said on the punked phone call, esp about bringing in outside agitators.
I duly note, however, that a lot of the commenters to this article are highly in favor of Walker & his tactics and are upset with Police Chief Wray for “unduly inserting himself” into the political process.
Seems like some of the conservatives will cling to their tribal identity and ideology no matter what. Rather sad. What’s it take to convince some portion of our citizens that they, too, are being screwed by the elites, like the Kochs, and their hired puppets, like Walker??
A Tale of Two Governors
When a politician like Scott Walker can’t lie convincely enough to spin Fox Newspeak’s meme of the day in his favor, it’s game over — if the electorate’s attention can be distracted away from American Idol.
When he tries to sell off state property to Koch Industries to balance the budget i.e. repay his largest corporate campaign contributors, the people of Wisconsin will have a choice — recall this Koch Whore or stand by and watch their own personal shock doctrine reality show play out.
Gov. Walker may beat Gov. Palin in shortest time served before resigning, which should catapult him to the front of the tea party dog pack for 2012.
I love the smell of republican presidential primaries in the morning.
O/T, but Discovery just launched on its final mission.
A beautiful launch…! 8-)
I don’t think Our Side could get as much mileage from an actual Koch/Wanker recorded conversation. Particularly since it really doesn’t seem to matter to the local media what Koch said; they are focused, rightly, on the taking of the call in and of itself, and Wanker’s side of it.
The things he was willing to say, once his staff arranged the call window and fell for the ‘no-callback’ provision, are really quite remarkable. Wanker thought it was Koch; that’s what drove his side of the call.
Yes, the absence of *any* commentary from our alleged “Democratic leaders” is notable, pathetic and speaks volumes about who they *really work for*… and here’s the hint: they don’t work for you or me, the “average” tax payer.
I’d love to get my tax dollars back on all those politicians’ pensions and health benefits paid for life. Most of them truly don’t need it, but they greedily grab as much as they can, while eagerly doing their best to eviscerate what little bit the “small people” get.
Ptoui!
sweet little chuckle to see all the ME and N Afr ‘revolutionaries’ on my twitter who are NASA geeks
That is a hopeless quest, friend.
I always feel much more comfortable once they clear the launch and drop the boosters. Must be a helluva ride…
Had a pretty good interview just now. I hope I didn’t come off as too desperate but he made a point that he was impressed with me.
The local press are not as bought and paid for as the national press. The writers don’t get the huge salaries, they don’t come up through internships, and they are closer to the people they follow. I know a few small-town reporters and they are truly the salt of the earth. So it is not too surprising that the local press is turning against Walker even when the MSM are supporting him.
One of the worst things that ever happened to journalism in this country is when the NYT went national. As a local paper it was outstanding. Same for the WP. Once they became beholden to national advertisers, the die was cast.
This is the most entertaining thing I’ve seen for quite awhile. I can only hope the activism spreads like wildfire to capitols all over the country.
How can others get in on that … ordering Pizza for those folks ?
Good news.
You know, you are probably right, but you have to take help where you can get it. If we had had your attitude in WWII, we would have left Stalin to fight Hitler all by himself. We are in a life and death struggle here. Wisconsin is the Right Wing’s Stalingrad. They cannot afford to lose, and they will pull out all the stops to win.
Well Done, Margaret !
iz our Generalissimo learnin’ ?!?!
apparently not – Solidarity Protesters to be removed from offices and hearing rooms starting Saturday: link
Best of luck, Peg…! Fingers and toes crossed for ya…! *g*
(((((honey,honey,honey))))
Turning up on twitter #askthespeaker: “When will you give up your pension/health care/salary that I pay for?
Apparently Boehner actually asked for questions under that hashtag.
seems some of you godless socialist types decided to show up at Kochtopus’s shiny new lobby shop in downtown Madison today:D
link
Oh, and Margaret – whew! Good luck, good thoughts, prayers–everything good for you. Crossing fingers and toes, too.
Had MSNBC on in the background earlier, Chuck Todd & the others(guests) mentioned the prank call several times but only to whine about how unethical it was to prank the Gov. and never once mentioned anything that was said in the call. Typical. Glad the folks in WI. aren’t ignoring it.
Best of luck!
Well, of course he was impressed with you! Us pups are impressed with you everyday. Sending tons of good luck vibes your way.
Thanks all. Still a long way to go but this is without a doubt the best interview I’ve had since I got hired at HJF.
Good post.
Walker came across as the lap dog he is for the brothers Koch – one could almost hear the foot shuffling. Walker is is a puppet with tangled strings, the Kochs will be so
pisseddisappointed.yesterday on twitter, Chuck Toad concern trolled a tweet about prank call setting a “precedent” for “entrapment journalism”
I kid you not
Republicans over-reach and Democrats under-reach. What a system.
I am happy for you. Your experience and knowledge would benefit any company. :)
It’s the MSM version of psy-ops, obfuscate the important and belittle the truth. Focus on the periphery not what is clear as day right in front you.
All Walker had to do next was asked when he will get his 30 pieces of silver.
Republicans over-reach and Democrats
under-reachreach around.fixed it for ya :D
They’re only in favor of law and order when they get to pick which laws and orders will be enforced.
David Dayen does yeoman-like work; he churns out an astonishing number of posts essentially error-free in form or content.
Mow if the talking heads would just invite labor leaders on their shows….
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/02/21/948054/-Support-for-Wisconsin-unions-pouring-in-worldwidein-pizza-form!
LOL … Excellent !
Walker is a bit too big for his britches to nowhere.
Virginia is workers’ rights hell. Someone should ride Kaine’s ass about his opposition to collective bargaining. Look, VA is turning left wing and they can’t stop the tide. Yankees like me and immigrants are changing the state. One day we will have union rights in this cheap labor hellhole. One day!
But first Wisconsin. This is only the start of the revolution against the Kocks and Obamas and Bushes and Clintons of the world!
All of my fingers and toes are crossed, Margaret!! Here’s hoping…
BTW, good luck to you Margaret. May the anarchist martyrs look kindly on you!
Thanks ! It’s a small effort, but a large gesture of support.
*Bows to the Master*
Exhibit A of why I so rarely ever watch MSNBC! Ptoui!
That said, I suppose it gives great insight into where Obama and the rest of “our” “Democratic leadership” (yeah: there’s an oxymoron for you) stands on this issue: they are lapdogs for the Kochs, just as much as Walker is… completely unsurprised. Hope Chuckie the Toad is sweating just a little…
Power to the People!!
Petro!! Namaste!
Crossing all digits for you, Margaret!
Be nice to F*ck Wad … it’s hard enough reading teh teleprompter … where’s the time for original thought and critical thinking ?
Namaste !
Union membership down from 30 million to 9 million in past 30 years. Is this the Right Wing’s Stalingrad or the Left Wing’s Stalingrad? I wonder (but we know who won in the end!)
Isn’t the real story here the senators who have run from the state? Isn’t it their obligation to vote and debate state matters? Talk about real cowards, not sure how they will show their faces again in Wisconsin or run for political office in the future. Just pathetic. If you’re beat, you’re beat but do the citizens of Wisconsin a favor and actually do the job you were elected to do.
Only had the MSNBC on cause can’t get Al Jazeera and the other choice was CNN.
I’m still chuckling over the fake David Kock’s “beautiful, beautiful” retorts. Fucking masterful!
The only people permitted to engage in original thought and critical thinking are the upper 2% who run the show these days. And their “thoughts” can be boiled down to: give me all of your money and STFU.
DDay, just wanted to thank you for your stellar reporting from the field … on a shoestring budget.
Tremendous work, Jane and everyone else !
‘sok; good to have some insight into what those lackeys are thinking, but… better than you than me, my friend, to be exposed to their crapulousness.
Hear, hear!! I resoundingly second that! So very grateful for real news every day. Thanks so much to everyone associated with this fine (ad)venture!!
We can hope, but hell the GOP was in the toilet until Obama came along.
I’m sure a feisty Democrat will show up to revive the GOP again. Gotta keep the two party train a’rollin.
Let’s hope it leads to being employed. Got me fingers crossed.
I liked the bit where “Fake Koke” said something about Mika Brezinski (some sexist comment), and Walker was all, like: yeah yeah hubba hubba… LOL. What a sexist a-hole, amongst many other derogatory & low things.
Namaste, Petro!!
One of the lessons of the prank phone call and the current media coverage is always let the control addicts, fundamentalists, ideologues, and punishment freaks speak. Never try to shut them up. Stick that mike right in their face and let them have all the time they need. The bullshit that will come out of their mouths will invariably be more damning than any adversarial critique.
Namaste SD !
Hands on the Monitors for Margaret … OHHMMMMMMMM !
That’s my concern, too. Duly noted that none of our “leaders” has said one d*mn thing about this. OTOH, that may be just as well, but as we all know full well here, Dems are ever ready to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory.
In some ways, I mostly hope the trad-Dem pols stay away and let this be a true grassroots movement. Who knows??? Maybe we’ll get some viable third party types to run for office out of this movement. Now THAT would be excellent.
Tim Kaine = Trojan Horse
with Dems like Tim Kaine it is no wonder why the Middle Class in the USA is dying.
I was just talking about this with a friend … hope this outrage continues, to field progressive candidates for the ’12 Election.
Om shanti Om ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ… to Margaret!!
Good luck!
Exactly. Which is why I’m not too sad that the trad-Dems have run away like the whipped dogs they are with their tales between their legs.
Let’s see if someone bubbles up from this exercise. I’d love it.
ain’t that the truth?? How worthless is Kaine? As much of @ssclown as Micheal Steele is, at least that fool was out there and shaking stuff up. Whenever does anyone ever *see* Kaine? Worthless.
Via NPR headlines:
Boeing awarded contract to build 179 refueling air tankers to be built in Alabama.
But we know most of the parts will be made overseas and assembled here.
They’re like O-bots. CheneyBots? C-bots?
Not only are some folks unreachable, but in my experience, those same folks have usually been unapproachable. They don’t want to be reached. They seem happy in their delusions. Anything that threatens to break through the delusion is something to be hated and/or feared.
Maybe not, this time. Did you see the article (dang, can’t remember where, just recently) about Boeing having reassessed outsourcing? Discovered that the outsourced pieces didn’t fit, spent more time trying to fix problems long-distance, contractors made profit, Boeing lost $$$, etc.
All of which, of course, their own people had tried to warn them about. But supposedly, they’re bringing manuufacturing back to US, having learned their lesson. Not holding my breath, but…
How’s your home puter, btw?
It is definitely *fear* that rules them, plus letting go of very long-held delusions must be frightening and painful. The authoritarian mind-set is also not particularly flexible. Add to that ongoing heavy doses of brainwashing and mind control via the media and the church, and well: voila, that’s the end result… unfortunately. Most of my rightwing fundie family members fall into this category. They will never let their delusions be ripped away from them, even from their cold dead hands.
I saw that piece and it was also covered on WMNF.
From Swim this mornin’ (just to save me typing it over, lazy dude that I am *g*)
Took it to Best Buy yesterday at lunch. Guy took off the access panel and said take it home, put it in the driveway and blow it out with a leaf blower. Lots of cat hair, dust and dirt. Said I didn’t have access to a leaf blower. He said stop at a gas station and use the air pump. Stopped at the Citgo on the corner where I get my gas, put 75 cents in the pump and blew it out. Took it home, used about 20 Q-tips to clean the gunk out of the processor fan housing. It’s been purring ever since.
Would be nice. I heard that “story,” too, about Boeing having big problems with foreign manufactured parts, etc. Hope it’s true, and that they are bringing manufacturing, etc, back Stateside.
This would be a great opportunity for preznint goodspeak to show up in Madison to demonstrate a bit of spinal column, but evidently, it aint happenin’…
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/24/obama-wisconsin_n_827770.html
Ah, here’s the link:
LOL!! Hysterical. You might want to get yourself some canned air, which I think you can buy at Home Depot or online. Sounds like you need to blow out your PC regularly. Canned air is bit pricey, but it beats taking apart your computer to go the gas station. Hilarious! I’m glad it works, though.
Oh my freaking lord. Cat hair! Who’d have thunk?
And now it’s “purring?” Well, I’m glad to hear it.
I expect bupkiss from Barry Zero, and at this point, maybe it’s better for all concerned if he stays the heck away. We all know who he works for, and it ain’t for the govt workers of WI.
Thanks. So it isn’t an urban myth, then. Well good. Hope they learned their lesson.
We buy ‘em by the case at work so I don’t have to worry about payin’ for ‘em. Put myself on a quarterly schedule to blow it out and clean the fan housing. I did get some strange looks at Citgo, though.
You know, this needs to be pointed out to Chuck (I’m All That) Todd: Our fake Koch did not say anything in that call, tactically, that, under current court rulings, a detective interviewing a suspect could not use.
Brief example: that fictional detective could tell a suspect that his partner in crime down the hall being interviewed by his partner was giving him up, so why doesn’t he come clean? and make it easier on himself.
Some here may not like that, but it’s true, and the sword of truth is two-edged.
I’ve got some somewhere….Should prolly do the same. Where would I point the thingy on a laptop? Or do I haveta take the cover off (gulp)?
Cost them lots of buck. They weren’t giving the contractors specs, all kinds of shit. Parts wouldn’t fit together, didn’t meet specs, etc. Idiots.
Never owned a laptop so I can’t help ya.
Yep. Somewhere (this thread? don’t recall) I posted why I don’t mind this tactic at all even tho’ I hate ordinary crank calls. Usually the callee is some ordinary citizen minding their own business, never having done any harm to the caller.
That’s far from the situation here, tho.
Hah! Choke: Rick Santorum thinks liberals have a “distorted view of history.” Especially the Crusades?
OHMYGOD.
Cenk talking about this – saw the story earlier. Santorum thinks the Muslims invaded Europe and the Crusades were about DEFENDING “Christendom?” (and who uses “Christendom” in a modern context?)
Speaking of cats – mine seem to know I’m supposed to be working at home, and they are not helping. As if I weren’t distractible enough at home, they’ve been anxious and active.
Instead of sleeping all day like respectable kittehs, they’ve been wandering around all day, pausing in front of me to whine, cry, meow, look up at me pitifully, etc. etc. They want to go out, I think. Not sure they know.
Finally, all sleeping, just in last hour. Sheesh.
Mine do that to me on the weekends and if I take a day off. ooooo, the dad’s home all day!! Pet me, play with me, brush me. Whiiiiiiiine.
But I’ve been home! I’m unemployed! Oh well, try to explain to a kitty…
Brushing Smokey, who’s been the most anxious, seems to calm him for a bit.
Btw, when I got home after training Mon. morning, he waited a few minutes before peeing right on the tv, and then on the leg of my desk!!!! Wasted considerable time cleaning up.
I almost put him outside…but then realized what the lesson learned would be….
Coming late here but hope my wishing you the best puts over the top and out of the 99er ranks.
Smart kitty.
Esp. if he did it when Chuck Toad was on, or Tweety.
get a fishing rod type toy (so you can still relax in a chair) and tire those kitties out. My biter boy has taken to attacking my legs as I walk by, so I thought of playing with him…it didn’t take to long before he ran out of gas. It really was a win-win.
Regarding the hope that people’s heads & hearts will finally be opened up and turned around by Republican over-reach, good luck with that. All the PTB have to do keep repeating lies and play a waiting game. Pretty soon the over-reach becomes the new normal and it’s time for some bi-partisansy “solutions” that look forward not backward.
Also laser toys. Can get ‘em for about $5 at pet bigbox. My cats know the toy is connected to the light, but can’t resist chasing it anyway.
It’s no problem if police use entrapment to bust some kid for marajuana possesion but how dare someone use an “unethical” prank call unmask the PTB’s true agenda. Where ya been?
Chuck Todd is worse than useless. Where do they dig up those guys?
