I haven’t been totally keeping up with events in Libya, but apparently Moammar Gadhafi has found some loyalists carry out his murderous schemes:
With escalating hostilities bringing Libya closer to civil war, Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s forces struck back at his opponents on three fronts, with special forces, regular army troops and, rebels said, fighter jets.
But the rebels dismissed the attacks Monday as ineffectual, and Colonel Qaddafi faced a growing international campaign to force him from power, as the Obama administration announced it had seized $30 billion in Libyan assets and the European Union adopted an arms embargo and other sanctions.
As the Pentagon began repositioning Navy warships to support a possible humanitarian or military intervention, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton bluntly told the Libyan leader to surrender power “now, without further violence or delay.”
The attacks by the colonel’s troops on an oil refinery in central Libya and on cities on either side of the country unsettled rebel leaders — who have maintained that they are close to liberating the country — and showed that despite defections by the military, the government may still possess powerful assets, including fighter pilots willing to bomb Libyan cities.
Gadhafi sat down with ABC News and pulled a Charlie Sheen, claiming that “the people love me” and would die to protect him.
While Gadhafi continues to try to murder his own people, US and British forces moved closer to a showdown, including a potential military component. The contingency plans are in place for a no-fly zone at the very least, while Pentagon ships are in the area. But there is at least some opposition to the idea of an extended military commitment, and from some unlikely sources:
“Dependent upon the method of delivery and what we decide to do we could decide to have a war in Libya to join the war in Afghanistan and Iraq,” Sen. Dick Lugar (R-IN) told reporters, saying he opposed arming the Libyan resistance or imposing a no-fly zone. “You know, people need to be very thoughtful about entering wars without a declaration and without much more congressional scrutiny of what’s involved.”
Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told reporters that a no-fly zone as part of a multinational effort could be effective, but warned that talk of arms shipments was very premature.
“I’m not sure who’s who yet,” he said of the nascent movement to overthrow Muammar Qadaffi. “Anything we can do to expedite his departure and get him off the world stage would be good, but you have to think these things through. One thing I’ve learned from Iraq and Afghanistan, you have to think these things through.”
Graham and Lugar have their own reasons and I don’t think they line up with my own. But anytime someone in Washington puts the brakes on empire, it’s worth noting.

jeebus Lindsey, even war-lovin’ Barry McCaffrey was poo pooing a no fly zone as ineffective and resource draining yesterday
US warships are enroute. Wait until the “shock and awe” comes into play. It’s coming. Probably under the “UN Peacekeeping” fake BS flag.
I generally think your writing and Posts are timely and great. But why compare Charlie Sheen to a bloody dictator. Sheen opposes the wars and the neo-cons. Perhaps you could pick a more accurate comparison, with Wolfowitz, or McCain.
“The people love me” is more likely to come from the White House propagandists when they talk about the great ego-tripper Barack Obama.
The real reason for targeting and attacking Sheen is his 9-11 public comments. But Sheen does have a number one tee vee show.
Graham will change his mind as soon as warmonger McSFB puts a word in his ear.
Doesn’t make him any less batshit crazy, which was the intent of the comparison. Mayhaps you watch too much teevee.
As diaried (?) here earlier the Libya rebels don’t want any outside help.
They seem to be doing pretty well on their own.
Got that right. For mostly a ragtag bunch of civilians with some military thrown in they did a damn good job of holding off Gadhafi’s goons. If they capture some of the heavy weapons they’ll give the goons a lickin’ that will keep on tickin’.
And Holy Joe.
Actually, I do not but Charlie Sheen is a talented actor. Once he “came out of the closet” questioning the 9-11 Commission, the Establishment started attacking him. Sheen can speak for himself and he has. I do not want to get OT, but again, i think the comparison to Sheen was a mistake. There are plenty of warmongers who could be better comparisons for crazed blood thirsty world leaders, such as Barack Obama.
That’s a given. Short Ride’s never seen a war he didn’t like. Fuckin’ asshole.
Gloat with a nutter’s eye,
rant on TV,
egos like the Hindenburg
have Sheen and Gadhafi
The dude is batshit crazy, regardless of how talented an actor he is (like I give a rat’s ass) or how mean the establishment has been to him. Batshit crazy. Obama doesn’t go on teevee and say he’s got Adonis’ DNA. Know who Adonis was?
he’s got such range! /s
all he ever ever played were variations of himself.
I once saw Richard Burton on stage doing Shakespeare. That’s acting.
Not doing badly at getting parts of Libya they control back to functioning either.
Guaranteed, “thinking it through” is a euphemism for “the people don’t like us, so how can we horn-in on the oil without pissing them off?”
For once I agree with Graham though I’m sure not for the same reason. I deplore violence done upon the Libyan people but we don’t need and can’t afford to occupy yet another country. NOT that I’ll have anything to say about it. I’m sure Ms. Graham’s opinion will change faster than Obama running away from the left as soon as the MIC and oil MOTU leans on him a little bit.
They don’t care who they piss off I think.
True, but at this stage, they have to realize it’s going to be easier to get the oil corp workers back and the pumps making profits again, if the new government isn’t ready to tell them to shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.
Judge orders Wisconsin Capital re-opened immediately:
I just saw Jane Fonda at 73 hold the audience at the Ahmanson in the palm of her hand for Moisés Kaufman’s “33 Variations”. That’s acting.
Sheen? He plays a celebrity on TeeVee…he’s got the part down really well though…
Back to the post…I don’t understand the push to open another war theater in Libya. Is it for control of the oil (duh, I know), or to make a political point? Are the neocons that afraid of representative democracy and self-determination? Is this a proactive move against projected Islamic participation in controlling oil? Is the idea that if ‘we’ control the oil, we hold Europe and China by the short ones?
Egypt didn’t bring calls for military action, Libya does. Gotta be the oil…
Perhaps Sheen does have a mental illness. Perhaps he has a drug dependency. My comment about his 2&1/2 Men, is that Sheen’s opinions and lifestyle offend the “opinion makers” more than the public.
But the addiction of Barack Obama to power and violence is far more terrifying than Charlie’s behavior. Obama jokes and laughs about murder.
I do not think Obama is joking. He is a psychopath same as Ghadafi, and he is bombing people same as Ghadafi.
The comparison was about batshit crazy. All that other shit is irrelevant.
Seriously. Maybe Frank33 hasn’t seen the Sheen interview? And how similar it was to the Gaddafi interview.
The reasons the Libya rebels don’t want help is (1) Then the gov’t would claim the rebellion was led by outsiders, (2) The rebels want to do it themselves so they can claim full credit, (3) They know that outsiders would make claims on any agreement (see Woodrow Wilson in WWI) and (4) They know that outsiders would f*** it up (see wedding parties, Afghanistan).
The most likely scenario for a no-fly zone: cratering airports with warplanes held by Gaddafi loyalists so they can’t get them in the air. There’s no need for the US to do this. But US presence is a more credible threat (“Look at the crazy imperialist Americans”) than other nations although other nations could do just as well. The ideal imposition of a no-fly zone would come from Arab and African countries, but fat chance of that.
I don’t know if one will be imposed. This is not the top option although it is rightly the one most discussed. And there are indications that the international community are taking cues from people who have contact with the folks in “Free Libya”.
Even the appearance of international organizations dithering again has become a negotiating tactic. What is clear is that most countries likely to be holding Libyan governmental assets or Gaddafi loyalist assets overseas have frozen them (Switzerland was the first).
And I bet that Chrisiane Amanpour gets a thorough debriefing when she gets out of Libya. That interview appeared to be face-to-face.
I have heard several of Sheen’s recent rants. He has the right to rant as much as you or I. But to call someone mentally ill for their opinions is something that is becoming familiar.
Again, not to be OT, but Khadafi has been oppressing and exploiting his country or years. The Bushie Crime Family had no problem making deals with Khadafi.
It is the corporate stenographers who are diminishing the real story of neo-con deals with Lybia. So Sheen is a useful “shiny object”.
