Gov. Scott Walker has been seeking a secular agenda of union-busting and selling off state-owned assets early in his first term as Governor of Wisconsin. But lurking behind that has apparently been a belief in divine inspiration. A Wisconsin historian made the point recently that Walker’s unwillingness to compromise matched the zealotry of past religiously-inspired crusaders. And the Madison-based magazine The Progressive has found some old speeches of Walker’s that advance this view.
In a talk to the Christian Businessmen’s Committee in Madison on November 13, 2009, Walker, who was raised by a Baptist preacher, spoke about his personal relationship with God, his “walk to Christ,” and his belief in the need to “trust and obey” the Lord.
He told the group that when he was thirteen, he committed himself to Jesus. “I said, ‘Lord, I’m ready . . . not just in front of my Church and the world but most importantly at the foot of your Throne, I’m ready to follow you each and every day. . . . I have just full out there said, ‘I’m going to trust in you Christ to tell me where to go. And to the best of my ability I’m going to obey where you lead me,’ and that has made all the difference in the world to me, for good times and bad.”
Walker said that God has told him what to do every step of the way, including about what jobs to take, whom to marry, and when to run for governor.
Now, this could just be flattery from a politician seeking the favor of a Christian business group. But I have another data point. And it goes back more than twenty years. An article in the 1990 student yearbook of his alma mater, the Marquette Hilltop, features a pretty similar quote about his religious convictions:
Planning to graduate in December of 1990 with a triple major of political science, economics and philosophy, Walker hopes to continue his political activities such as running for State Assembly against Gwendolyn Moore in 1990.
“I really think there’s a reason why God put all these political thoughts in my head,” he said.
Just to update from there, Walker did not end up graduating with that triple major, though he did get an honorary college degree from The International College of Metaphysical Theology, bestowed on him by a local tea party group. And he got beat by Gwen Moore in that 1990 Assembly race 69-31. Moore is now in Congress.
There’s a digital copy of this available at the Marquette University website, so it’s authentic.
Here we have two stories, twenty years apart, showing that Walker has a legitimate religious zeal to institute his preferred policies. It says a lot about how he’s going about his negotiations. I guess God didn’t tell him to compromise.
Incidentally, in case you were wondering where the Catholic church in Wisconsin has positioned itself in the budget debate, they’re siding with the protesters and toward compromise. I learned about that on Fox News:

I detest ‘true believers’ of any stripe. It doesn’t have to be in a religious sense. It can be politics, sports, music, art, whatever. These are the types of people who are so obsessed with and blinded by the absolute rightness of their personal vision and belief system and conversely, the absolute wrongness of all others. They feel completely justified in using any and all methods to accomplish their purpose. Nothing is out of bounds, they can do no wrong in that pursuit, and they have some sort of Divine absolution. They can lie, cheat, steal, defame, denigrate, anything goes because they are Right, Correct, and Chosen and their opponents aren’t and are fair game.
Fucking fanatics chap my ass.
Well, I really doubt if any benevolent deity put Walker’s thoughts in his head and if I had broadband, I’d have linked to Jake and Elmo’s famous, movie scene quote.
I was hoping you would run with this. Thanks David, the Progressive rates right up there with the punked Kock call.
And with broadband I might have gotten the Blues Bros names right. Ha!
American Conservatism = Christian Fascism
Another politician who is deluded and hearing voices in his head. Scaaaary.
I’ve been thinkin’ that God is a gigantic blogger and the people in the world post comments.
Religious nutcases in political power is getting to be frequent enough to think of it as a redundancy.
I like that!
God doesn’t believe in compromise. He doesn’t have to. He knows what’s right and you just better do what he says.
Digby has a typically excellent post over at her place on Walker that makes the point that he is trying to run Florida like a corporation, in which what the boss says goes. Businesses are hierarchical, and in the United States, where you don’t have the protections against harassment and unfair dismissal that you have in other more civilized countries, the authoritarian strain is especially marked. It was only a matter of time before the model was extended to government. Bush II I think represents the real breakthrough.
Whoops. my mistake. not on Walker but on the other idiot gov in Florida. The point still stands, though.
I wonder what God will tell him to do if he gets his sorry ass recalled next year.
Just heard on Free Speech Radio News that the recall effort for the h8ers is gaining momentum.
Even the Regressive legislature isn’t buyin’ King Scott’s shit. The King addressed the assembled Tea Partiers, bussed to Tallahassee by Americans for Prosperity, on the Capitol steps this afternoon. Sentient beings across the street were very vocal.
“Compromise” isn’t in the bible…
Reminds me of the statement Obama made just a month ago at the annual prayer breakfast. Jesus is his Lord and savior, but he chose William Daley for his Chief of Staff.
Jeeze now there is a big surprise, another religious nutfuck rippin people off. Shit if they are not buggering little children they are fucking the rest of us. Gotta love those goddists.
Heh, I wonder if Walker’s “God” is also responsible for this.
Yeah. Fits both.
Then he can go back to Marquette and really earn that “triple major” he talks about. (If they let the cheater back in school)
Naaah. Missing the “bread” part.
And iirc, neither is withholding school breakfasts for reduced price and free lunch eligible elementary school children.
Let them boy/girl up and share the sacrifice. /s
Sounds to me like Scott Walker is a member of evil Doug Coe’s Family/Fellowship. I tried to research it just now but not coming up with any good links to prove/disprove it. But this is the kind of christianist fascism propounded by Coe and his band of brothers (emphasis mine bc the “Family” is notoriously mysogynistic, imo). Doug Coe is very “into” pushing the notion that his “Fellowship” males are “closer to God” and getting direct orders from the man upstairs.
There is a blog called “Fellowship of Minds” that supports Walker:
http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/2011/02/24/vote-for-wisconsin-gov-scott-walker/
unclear if this is part of Coe’s group, but it’s, uh, something…
Where’s the wine??
It is water right now but give me a moment…aah there it is, Medoc, not bad for a quicky miracle.
Thanks for the link. Joan’s recipes were uninspiring however this was enlightening.
and this
So there.
“Arrogance and stupidity all in the same package. How efficient of” Scott Walker.
Quick, msn.com has a headline about an NPR executive calling the Tea Pary racist. Great read.
I see no one thinks it could be the toxic bottom paint on the boats in the marina. That stuff is super deadly.
Not a good Cab from Russian river?? Sheesh…
Sorry about the typos, I was in a hurry. It’s on MSN.com.
It’s all those Prayer Breakfasts. these men and some women have convinced themselves that Jesus really meant that it was the POOR who would have a hard time threading the needle. And wealth, however it is gained, is a sign of holiness.
Remember? Lloyd Blankfein also says he is doing “God’s work”.
Expect a new Bibble out sometime soon
Authority demands a hierarchy. And by sheer coincidence, we are at the bottom. Authority is not vested in the person oppressing you, it derives from the people above him. At the top is an imaginary father figure in the sky (No, really, he’s there! He talks to me!) with ultimate authority, which you cannot possibly challenge. The top non-imaginary authorities are thus not responsible, they are just following orders. And since those orders derive from ultimate authority, questioning authority is the worst sort of sin imaginable, and any level of heinous act is justified in forcing conformity.
Here’s a working definition of Hell: putting an Authoritarian in a position of Authority.
Dya think.
Aw shucks. And here I thought I was just empathizing with my fellow humans, excluding the PTB ones, who are barely within the human category.
Sorry
A polytheistic religion has a god/dess for each human characteristic or major activity. You pray and make offerings to the aspects of the divine which are causing you grief at any given time.
Monotheism is stuck with a single god which has to handle everything. So people tend to create an aspect of that god to suit their purposes. So you end up with the Prosperity Gospel and Supply Side Jesus. Live a good life, and Jesus will come along and hit you in the head with a sock full of silver dollars (which you can use to pay your taxes in Utah).
‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Seems to get lost in the prosperity frenzy.
Monotheism is part of the general bioevolutionary phenomenon in which humans are alpha-male led herd animals.
WI Public Radio was reporting at the half hour, that Republican Legislators were considering enacting changes to the recall process to save their sorry behinds.
Now that is some creative thinking directed toward solving the budget problems and creating the 250K new JOBS that Wanker has promised. /s
(sundowning here, I had a more mellow attitude this morning)
“Power Of Nightmares”. (Fear) a BBC Documentary.
The first part of the 6 part series explains the origins of Islamism and the U.S. NeoConservatism and how they evolved to the present.
Interesting history of the last 30 years, worth a watch for anyone who wants to understand how America got this way.
part 1 of 6 done by BBC (29 mins.)

You need a nap during the day, and a cocktail at 5p. Both do wonders for sundowners’ syndrome.
Walker appears to be a textbook sociopathic, authoritarian social dominator–and an ideological fundamentalist, too. The concepts of democracy and compromise are typically not part of their vocabulary.
What is it about US culture and political institutions that encourage the ascendance to positions of “leadership” of folks who harbor such childish notions of stark dichotomies, Right Answers and obedience to directives from invisible forces? Eh, fear of Hell, for starters . . .
“I really think there’s a reason why God put all these political thoughts in my head.”
I wonder why God didn’t put the Beatitudes there as well? Or that bit about whatsoever you do to the least of these, oh my brothers and sisters? Although he is a busy guy and probably can’t be expected to handle every Judas who comes along (Jesus to Walker: “My kingdom is not of this world . . .” John 18:36).
What’s that quote about how when Fascism comes to the US it will be drapped in the flag and carrying the Bible? Seems to be the case.
Saw this guy talk recently. Good stuff.

They’ve had a new Bible for awhile now. It’s the same except that it has been purged of the books of Ruth and Ecclesiastes, and the entire New Testament except for the rantings of Paul and the book of Revelations.
Not only being a person in touch with a god of his own making ( his ego) and being dumb as a bag of hair, Walker is getting himself in a hole so deep, he may wind up in prison:
Democrats Lodge Ethics Complaint Against Walker Over Prank Call With “David Koch”
The tighter Walker holds on to his union-busting bill, the weaker his grip on the office of governor.
I can’t wait to see the tractor rally this weekend!
True and they want to teach it in schuuul.
I say study the 12 steps and Joesph Campbell’s “Occidental Mythology” Talk about an eye opener!
Why does none of this surprise me?
If Walker were sincere about wanting to follow Jesus, then you would think he’d actually read what Jesus said about the rich and the poor.
People who make a public show of their religious fervor are almost always putting on a false front so that they can take advantage of you.
Driving my HS student to and from evening activities precludes the later, but I appreciate the concern and advise.
No, that was a miracle caused by Pelican Jesus to feed his flock.
It’s 148 miles to Chicago, he’s got a full load of righteousness, a half a brain, it’s night and he’s wearing his Jesus earphone.

HuffPost has said about an hour ago that Walker is giving up. Actually said that e-mails were just released that says he wants to deal and preliminary reports say that the 8% is the only thing that he wants and everything goes back to normal.I wouldn’t trust him as as could spit.
HA! Outstanding.
David Dayen is upstairs!
Where the Proposed Foreclosure Fraud Settlement Falls Short
Remember Baptists think catholics are spawn of satan and a flase church.
Scott Walker is about as much a true believer as Dick Cheney.
You guys know why Scott Walker repeatedly was caught cheating running for Student President at Marquette Univ.? The Marquette student paper declared Walker unfit to be Marquette Student President.
http://marquettetribune.org/2010/10/26/news/walker-wpo1-tw2-je3-one-question-controversial-claims-continue-in-walkers-campaign/
Gee, Scott, did you ever stop to consider that maybe that wasn’t God, but your own delusions speaking to you?
I am so heartily sick of these so-called “Christians”. What egotists to believe that an omnipotent Deity has nothing better to do than micro-manage their petty lives?
