So yesterday, Chuck Schumer and the Senate Democratic leadership hit on this idea to broaden the conversation on the 2011 budget to include the out years, and to look at more than just the discretionary budget, including taxes, subsidies and tax expenditures. This was a decent rhetorical gambit to expose Republicans as total frauds on the deficit.
So naturally, the White House shut it down.
White House press secretary Jay Carney responded to a proposal put forth by some Senate Democrats to broaden negotiations to consider other areas than domestic discretionary spending. Carney said that President Obama wants to deal with broader issues, but that lawmakers must focus on passing a seven-month funding bill.
“We are in a situation, as we were last week, where the government shuts down on March 18,” Carney told reporters at his daily press briefing. “We need to resolve the issue on the table, which is funding for fiscal year 2011. So we’re not waiting for anything to get to those talks.”
It’s that kind of crackerjack political instinct that led to a 63-seat loss in the House last year.
So the White House’s view is to deal with the issue at hand by gradually paying a ransom to the opposition, leaving them to only ask for more. And this cripples any maneuvering by allies, as even Schumer acknowledged yesterday that “his party will have to move in the GOP’s direction.” Part of that is because so many Democrats abandoned the Democratic plan yesterday in the Senate, free vote though it was, because they’re in the grip of the new austerity. But another part of it is the extreme lack of leadership from the party leader in the White House, to the point of actively undermining the negotiation tactics. The Republicans can sit back, yell “Where’s the President,” and drag this out, one drip at a time.
One part of the above-linked story is interesting, however:
Obama’s team — which had anticipated a messy internal GOP fight between mainstream Republicans and tea party faithful — now worry that the contours of a winning GOP strategy on the budget is coming into focus: a series of small deals, with escalating cuts that force the president to defend his pet social and development programs at a time when he had hoped to position himself as a fiscal hawk.
It also remains wary of any deal that involves major changes to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security — and administration officials say that a bipartisan group of six senators working on entitlement reform will not have a seat in negotiating sessions.
That’s a pretty bold statement taking entitlements off the table. The whole thing seems in flux to me. I don’t know the President’s strategy here, and I don’t think he knows it either. Republicans, meanwhile, have hit on something they think will work.

the circus act that is the OBAMA WH, gets it all wrong again.
or do they?
there is an old record that has been played a lot over the last two years,
it is called “Obama moves toward the GOP point of View”
EJ Dionne said it best, National Dems better stop looking at the OBAMA WH for direction and look toward Wisconsin.
DD says
“The whole thing seems in flux to me. I don’t know the President’s strategy here, and I don’t think he knows it either”
this should be a line in a song! :)
this statement sums up the OBAMA WH the last 2.3 years
Where would the National Dems go, Canada?
:-)
Obama seems to get dumber by the day.
Let me guess:
Just as Obama has had the DNC’s apparatus converted to being his own personal 2012 reelection machine and to hell with every other Democrat, he’s deathly afraid of seeing competent Democratic leaders in Congress — hence his animus against Schumer. (This is especially true if they’re actual Democrats like Schumer.) He doesn’t like competition or potential rivals that might be able to oppose his GOP-lite plans for the Democrats.
Obama “knows” that he is a liar and that he is actually a Republican…he’s just hoping no one else notices….except perhaps Repubs he’s trying to court for 2012. He’s a little late to the party. The Repubs will get pretty much anything they want..in fact..why not just hand the whole shebang over to them…makes no difference at all.
The WH sends the ransom in a bit at a time, and the republicans send our beloved hostage back to us one limb at a time.
What a good idea.
Brutal.
Funny!
When Obama talks bipartisanship he’s actually just acknowledging that both parties are packed with neoliberals and since he’s a firm believer in the Shock Doctrine he doesn’t want any lip from anybody else.
neoliberal ideologues = Vichycrats and Regressives
Great line – pithy and accurate.
I’m thinkin’ Barstow…
I guess great minds really do think alike. ;)
Ah, it’s all about eleventy dimension chess…maybe he is at the tenth dimension now…or maybe it’s all a ruse so all the Republican/corporate wants get handled and the bipartisanship is the cover for it. The presidency of the USA is simply another name for corporatist whore and has been for about 30 years.
would strike me as the operative word, WRT “entitlements”.
I think that’s a sleight of hand statement. A 5% cut wouldn’t be “major”, would it?
I’m thinking it may be more convenient to just change the title to CEO. President is a sham.
yet the supposed porgressive blogs continue supporting this president
he is worse for this country then a republican, period, with a republican president the democrats can mount successful opposition to the very same corporate policies of obama, so long as it’s a democratic president he can lobby for right wing agenda and get it easily passed
we need this guy out of office and I am personally going to lobby for whoever the republicans run
Hasn’t he already done just that?
Oh he knows. The President’s strategy? Same as it ever was. War and Shock Doctrine. Give the Social Security Trust Fund to his lord and master, Peter Peterson. Otherwise, betray any Obama supporters remaining, cave, capitulate and give the oligarchs everything they want. Also undermine the Democratic Party and Democratic activists.
The long term strategy is expand the imperial wars, and assassinations and mercenary armies, for eventual use in the Homeland against the “Left”.
The final confirmation for this belief? If we deploy troops on Libyan soil.
I’m with you, but I still hold out a small sliver of hope that maybe the fool is just completely incompetent.
Scott Walker may be Koch Brothers’ man, but Obama is Bob Ruben’s man.
That’s his strategy? He’s allegedly a Democrat, there’s a Depression raging, the last election ushered in stage 3 fascism, and that’s his strategy?
Good thing the Republican Presidential candidates have the collective IQ of a grilled cheese sandwich, or this would be an actual race.
It is sickeningly clear that were being sold down the river by the White House Dems. I think it’s time we begin to groom a Democratic Fighter for 2012.If there is one? This Country’s Democrats, in power in every State and the US Govt. could take a lead from the Wisconsin Demonstrators ! Strangly they seem to have ignored Their Brothers and Sisters .I wonder where the support from the Democrats(So called)in the White House is ? We need solidarity or without a doubt the Repugnants will create a Fascist Govt. Which they have demonstrated is their goal and they have initiated a takeover of many States most flouting the Law and the will of the people.
If you look at what he’s done, this is an explanation that works.
You owe my lunch an apology.
Another shocking revelation about ObamaCo and their failings at even a passing resemblance to democrats.
Obama & the White House = Clueless gaggle of dumb-fucks.
I said it before in another place regarding Obama’s election day mandate:
Never has someone with so much, done so little, so quickly.
obama is a liar. he had no intention of governing as a real dim because he is university of chicago economic shock doctrine believer. he is trying as hard as he can to deliver the country into the hands of the oligarchs without being as ham handed as walker. I live in repug country, so my dim vote won’t get anything, but I will not waste it on obama. I’ll write in or skip it.
Obama’s “strategies” and “tactics” leaves me quite disgusted, and the “only” pivot point to be found in all this political insanity, is for the Democrats in the Senate to plant their feet firmly and say, “Hell No!” and nothing less.
Of course, this is not going to happen.
However, I will suffer quietly and took to the future and where an actual “progressive” has the actual “conjones” to challenge Obama for 2012. And Brown of Ohio, would be my preferred candidate for the party’s nomination. And yet, when Senator serve in the Oval Office, they tend to collapse and Obama has now collapsed.
Jaango
Really, people are still looking for the person who ran for president in 2008 to magially show up. NEWS FLASH! ELVIS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING AND HE AIN’T COMING BACK. Meet the new Obama, a corporate shill and full time punching back for the right. The only question left in this budget debate is will there be a middle class left after Obama finishes his surrender to the right this time.
I think I finally figured out why Obama ran for president, one, because he wanted to be the first black president(and before anyone calls me a racist, I voted for the man and I’m black, I’m just willing to tell the truth), and two, to completly destroy the progressive movement. It looks like he’s achieved both! If not for these reaons then why, because he’s let the Republicans and Conservadems run Washington since he arrived. Hell you’d think they were his superior.
Clearly, the number one priority for 2012 needs to be, “OBAMA MUST GO!!!”
Thus far, he has done absolutely NOTHING to enhance the deplorable conditions into which the Wall Street gangsters delivered America; in point of fact, he has enhanced ONLY the Wall Street gangsters themselves!
He is a TRAITOR to our country and should be so charged, along with his predecessors who were equally culpable. Hell, he can’t even find the intestinal fortitude to charge those predecessors with the crimes which they so clearly committed.
The American Democracy is in the balance, and I am not sanguine with regard to its future….or lack thereof. Given a second term, Obama may be able to lay claim to a new title…..The Terminator (of said democracy).
All of which leads this WWII veteran to proclaim: “I AM CERTAINLY GLAD TO BE 85…..NOT 25!”
Obama, once again kicks the Dem party and it’s supporters.
What is wrong with that man? Seriously! Who the heck is telling him he should do this and in this way?
Insanity prevails from the highest office in our Nation!
Obama is a secret
MuslimRepublican.Either he’s a Republican mole or the worst political negotiator to ever occupy the Oval Office. Considering how he eagerly embraces all of Bush’s most egregious policies, I am convinced it is the former.
The Regressives want Obama gone cuz they can’t stand having an African American in the WH.
We want him gone cuz he’s a fuckin’ neoliberal asshole.
Michael Moore for prez.
I’d vote for him. He’d have to shave, though.

I would personally buy a copy for the President.
A baseball cap in the Oval. Would be a great sight – a real person.
Ok – Obama is a con job is old news
But writers for other sites are either incompetent or fail to follow the politics they write about is a bit new.
Rep Eric Cantor, House majority leader, said a month ago that the plan was to do bi-weekly extensions killing 2 billion to 4 billion each time – with the discussion being on finding and killing those funds needed for Obamacare and bank regulation.
So 3 days ago we get http://thehill.com/homenews/house/147725-50-billion-question-where-will-house-gop-draw-the-line reporting this.
And the White House is just now aware of the GOP plan?
I dare say any FDL lurker could do a better political job that those Obama surrounds himself with. So the question is why does he set up this wall – this excuse – of incompetence in my staff, and the only answer I can come up with is that he has already decided to cave and so informed the GOP.
Seems that, as unlikely as it may be, that Senator Chuck Schumer is the only defender of the social safety net left – and he must fight both the GOP and Obama. We know from the public option that Senator Reid will only do what Obama wants him to do.
“I don’t know the President’s strategy here, and I don’t think he knows it either.”
The President is waiting to hear the President’s strategy from the guy brought on board to devise that strategy: Bill Daley. To predict Bill Daley’s strategy, ask yourself: “What would make JP Morgan Chase happy?”
Among others: David Koch. That’s my bet. Hope you don’t mind my edit to your question. JMHO that it more accurately reflects the consanquinity between Obama & WI Gov Scott Walker.
I think his title should be “Celebrity Spokesmodel In Chief for the Ruling Plutocracy” .
Eh – I’ll go with that. Obama’s doing what his corporate lords & masters have paid him very handsomely to do.
Why anyone could be “surprised” by this at this point is beyond me. Obama has been “doing” exactly this kind of action since he got elected by the PTB to do their bidding.
It’s like he’s clarence thomas’ nephew or something, ain’t it ?
Actually instead of CEO I think Obama’s title would better be: Regional Manager. It seems to me that he treats the office as if he’s been elected to the highest level middle manager position in the world. Lots of paper shuffling, lots of fun junkets with golf outings, a decent expense account, now and then some Power Point presentations to fluff the higher-ups, some difficult lunch meetings, some management-by-walking around to hand out atta-boys to the lower levels.
Good Christ on a bike, what a clueless fucking asshole Obama is.
Far from it, it looks to me that Wisconsin is evidence of a resurgence of a national, populist, progressive movement in its initial stages. That’s the nature of the zeitgeist that we’re in. The popular uprisings we’re seeing now in the Middle East is also a sign of the times. They’re connected.
DING DING DING DING DING! No more calls, kids, we have a winner…
Excellent comparison!!!!
Pfft! He doesn’t have a strategy except the same old long term one of keeping the boot of the rich on the necks of the middle class.
That’s an official WH photo? Are you kidding me? LOL!
Obama and others have continued to limit our range of thought (Newspeak), so that we don’t even consider more healthcare, more Social Security benefits, free nursing homes, free college education, $12 an hour minimum wage, 30-hour work weeks, seven weeks annual vacation, two months maternity leave.
Instead, we crawl around in filth, competing to pander the most, crying that our “cuts” are the best. It’s disgusting to see a once brave populace reduced to begging to keep what they have, and never daring to raise their voices for real economic justice.
Obama doesn’t want to be Reagan. He wants to be Pinochet.
Our next President, Margaret already knows that. Don’t forget to write in the name.
I don’t like O but there is no way on earth I will vote for a repug, given what is going on now all around us.. We have to find a way to live with him and get what we want.
O makes Reagan look like a tree hugging liberal.
I love it! He sure doesn’t have much vision, does he? He looks at the job description and says “okay, I can do that.” No lobbying for better policy, no rallying the troops, just show up, punch in, clear his inbox, and punch out.
This reminds me of when, during the Bush Tax Cut “fight”, Schumer wanted to create a separate tax bracket for those making over a million dollars and not give them a tax cut, that would have had congressional support to pass. Obama, NATURALLY, told them not to do that. Derpity herp derp.
yes, plus the only Region he cares about as Regional Manager is the inside the beltway region. That’s his assigned territory.
Vision? Vision? What is that? He don’t got no vision, he don’t want no vision, he don’t need no vision. Not recently anyway.
I’d rather have a Republican in office enacting hard right policy, rather than a “socialist muslin” who was elected to the office running under a (fake) progressive banner. Truth in advertising.
No fing way. You see I don’t go for Walker, Newt and that crowd so much. They could fuck up the world in no time at all. They have proven it or maybe you havn’t noticed. And where did you get “socialist muslim” from??
I guess King is an example of “truth in advertising” to you? How bout that piss ant Eric Cantor?
It might be better if there were a Republican in the WH.
Democrats and some progressives, it seems, will let a Democratic president do things they’d fight from a Republican.
Really, if Walker were a Democrat and hurting the middle class and the union, wouldn’t we all be hearing about pragmatism and realistic budget constraint and the perfect being the enemy of the good and how the evil Republicans would be so much worse?
Obama froze wages for federal workers and raised taxes on all state and federal employees, as well as on the working poor. He cut taxes on the wealthy and allowed federal bailout money to go to obscene bankster bonuses and salaries.
And a lot of so-called liberal and progressive voices gave him cover for that.
The more the Republicans have power the more the people are galvanized and willing to fight back on the streets. Voting for Obama does a disservice to the solidarity of the working and middle class.
Obama isn’t doing things all that differently than Bush. I’d say the world looks more fucked up now than it did in 2007. I know I am much less optimistic about the future of this country.
MusliN. TeaPary verbiage. Worst case scenario is the general population thinks a LIBERAL is in the office of President enacting conservative policies that don’t work. So many “independents” who listened to Obama’s campaign rhetoric, and get wind of their email forwarding, mouth breathing, wingnut relatives spewing about the “socialist muslin” don’t realize he is actually further right than Reagan.
Yes. And voting for Obama does a disservice to the solidarity of the working and middle classes because Obama IS AN ENEMY of the working and middle classes.
Mr. Dayden:
You continue to assume the Obama supports Democratic/Progressive goals and is, now in office, completely incompetent at achieving his goals.
I believe the evidence is now overwhelming that the opposite is true: He does not have goals consistent with Democrats/Progressives and is very good at getting what he wants…while pretending that the Republicans made him do it.
This is particularly true in the economic sphere; Geithner has clearly persuaded Obama to the supply side/low corporate taxes/trickle down economic approach preferred by Wall St., banks, CEO’s and Republicans, including Bush.
Evidence: Obama was very successful at persuading Democrats to support his escalation in Afghanistan; even liberals such as Boxer voted against health care amendments opposed by Obama that would have allowed gov’t. negotiation of Medicare drug prices and reimportation of drugs from Canada; Obama worked actively to quash progressive financial reform; no consequences for Wall St./Banks who brought us this recession and protection of Bush people from any accountability for malfeasance and law-breaking, while attacking whistleblowers across the spectrum.
Please wake up and smell the coffee: Obama works more or less openly and actively to thwart progressive (often mainstream Democrat) proposals while pretending to be at the mercy of Republicans.
Until we accept this depressing truth about our president (whom I campaigned for and contributed to), nothing is going to change… He’s going to keep marching rightward and rewarding his wealthy benefactors while we scratch our heads and surrender the fight. (As Greenwald says, why should Obama pay attention to liberals when all we do is whine and then back him/defend him anyway.)
Obama has given bipartisan cover for all of the worst abuses of the Bush administration. If McCain had been elected, at least Democrats would have continued to oppose things like indefinite detention, and Gitmo. Now it is accepted by both sides of the aisle, or, at least, both sides of the aisle without principles.
Yes.
“It also remains wary of any deal that involves major changes to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security — and administration officials say that a bipartisan group of six senators working on entitlement reform will not have a seat in negotiating sessions.”
The operative word is “major”.
Z
I like how raising the cap on SS wouldn’t even be considered by Prez Wingnut McAssKisser.
Schumer an actual DINO is what you mean, right? This guy has been in hock to Wall Street since Day One. He’s a camera whore who’ll fold on everything except Israel.
Funny!
You must be in California. (Me, too. Been to Barstow. Not a fun place.)
Yes, Frank, you are correct on all counts.
It doesn’t have to be that our only choices are Obama or some other Republican. There are qualified progressives who should be challenging Obama in the primaries.
Great Post!
very true

The Treasury issued its monthly report on the deficit today at 2 PM ET. For 5 months of the fiscal year, through the end of February:
From Table 1

$641,257 fiscal 2011
$651,403 fiscal 2010

Him and my sorry excuse for a
Senatorhuman being, DiFi.My reply to #75 is wrong. #75 is correct.
Should be but apparently aren’t.
Tax the rich.
This Obama shtick is getting to be like the crocodile hunter show. Steve Irwin sets off to find the Obama, where could he be hiding? Maybe he’s over at Cheney’s old undisclosed hovel?
Peek a boo, so cute!
Ignore #78. I am talking too much.
Doesn’t it seem like about NOW would be a suitable time for Kucinich to throw his hat in the ring again? He might even find an army to march for him this time… they sure won’t march for Zero again.
forgot Crikey!
Only Barack Obama could distract me from the vile, hypocritical fatce that is Peter King right now.
Obama wants his historic achievement(whatever exactly it is) at any price. Comparing him to Neville Chamberlain does Chamberlain a disservice.
The White House wants to control its message. In this case, that means not send one, which really means, “I hear you and agree with you, GOP leadership”. It gelds cabinet members or Congresscritters who go “off the reservation” and fulfill their duties by speaking out and defending their agencies and their legislative priorities.
The White House wants to “hold its fire” for pending negotiations. As Digby says, that means it’s willing to give up on everything: Social Security, jobs, banking reform, education, health care funding, the rule of law, the lot.
It’s as if the emperor’s praetorian guard, faced with an overwhelming force, told the legions in the field to hold fire; only the praetorians could use their weapons. Since there are only a handful of them, they hold fire and wait. Meanwhile, the legions wait, prohibited from defending what they and, more importantly, Main Streeters, hold dear, while the emperor negotiates away his throne and their country.
Rome lost its Republic to imperial ambitions. Emperors long paid lip service to the Republic, but none of them were capable, willing or able to return to the Republic. The US teetered on empire for a long time. Bush tipped us over the edge. Obama pays lip service to the Republic, but has no intention of returning power to the Senate, let alone to the citizens.
Beautiful!
Obama must go. He is a republican and a traitor. We are the Dead.
Democrats will never support Kucinich. If he runs again as a Democrat I won’t support him either.
Obama strategy? Why its triangulating the DNC. Obama is no Democrat and he is very successfully throwing the Democrat party.
Sounds like the “Death of a Thousand Cuts” to me..
He fooled enough people for long enough to do the deed and it isn’t just the unions which show this, it’s everything he’s done since the Gang of Six.
And I have no doubt he will be re-elected and the real tyrant will emerge in the second 4 years…just like Bush did it.
They don’t need the US citizen anymore; for work for votes for anything. If you really LOOK at the history of this country, you can see that everyone who ever came over was looking for a quick buck. They’ve treated this country like a raddled old whore from the beginning.
Nice to see another African-American who voted for him who is disgusted by him now. You and the Glen Ford at Black Agenda Report are the only liberals (maybe you’re liberal) I know who tell it like it is with obomber.
As far as I’m concerned this guy is just another filthy republican. I should have voted my principles and voted for McKinney. I sure as hell wont make the same error in 2012.
Kucinich has already said he wont run against Obama. Besides, for me he’s down a couple of notches. He spent months knocking obamacare for all the reasons we talk about here. He ultimately voted for it in the end. I am sick and tired of every single dc dem. I guess many felt the same and that is why they got their asses kicked last november.
We will never get ahead with this lilly-livered coward of a president. Blame him for the huge losses in 2010 and the upcoming huge losses in 2012. I don’t care if he is the first black president he cannot be allowed to destroy the democratic party. He is incompetent – and each decision puts the entire democratic party and the progressive movement behind. How long do we allow him to continue?
The solution is obvious.
Just offer to kill the death tax for the super wealthy in a 7 month CR.
The Republicans will trample each other to vote YES.
Don’t send him any more money. Don’t volunteer. Don’t vote for him.
Says the battered wife to her battered children.
