Two months after the tragic shooting in Tucson, President Obama quietly placed an op-ed in the Arizona Daily Star commencing the debate on gun laws that should arise as a result. This is a pretty muted response, but let’s see what he views as priorities:
• First, we should begin by enforcing laws that are already on the books. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System is the filter that’s supposed to stop the wrong people from getting their hands on a gun. Bipartisan legislation four years ago was supposed to strengthen this system, but it hasn’t been properly implemented. It relies on data supplied by states – but that data is often incomplete and inadequate. We must do better.
• Second, we should in fact reward the states that provide the best data – and therefore do the most to protect our citizens.
• Third, we should make the system faster and nimbler. We should provide an instant, accurate, comprehensive and consistent system for background checks to sellers who want to do the right thing, and make sure that criminals can’t escape it.
Porous background checks are bad for police officers, for law-abiding citizens and for the sellers themselves. If we’re serious about keeping guns away from someone who’s made up his mind to kill, then we can’t allow a situation where a responsible seller denies him a weapon at one store, but he effortlessly buys the same gun someplace else.
Obama describes this as the beginning of a “new discussion” on guns in America, while being careful to state that his Administration has not curtailed Second Amendment rights, which he believes have been definitively adjudicated by the nation’s highest court.
As for the Criminal Background Check System, I would say that the President has the ability to implement whatever changes to that system he wants. He could lean on the states to provide data in a more timely manner. And there is a lot unsaid here. The “gun show loophole,” which allows people to purchase guns without a background check, is the elephant in the room.
Obama avoids the discussion of high-capacity magazine clips like the one Jared Loughner used, or the broken American mental health system that never gave Loughner care he clearly needed. Once again we have a cautious middle course. But even on those terms, I’m not sure what he’s endorsing here. Does he want to close the gun show loophole? Does he need legislation to carry out his vision of responsible and consistent background checks? Is it all just a matter of enforcement?
This op-ed leaves more questions than answers.

Obama’s no real answer means no real opposition to anyone’s stance. It’s pudding campaigning, because every time you stick your objective finger into an issue, it disappears.
Obama is the stealth GOP leader, and when he approves Medicare and Social Security gutting, the old people will get really angry, even more than when they are shopping and scream at a clerk for overcharging.
SO, we have a President who seems to approve easy purchases of deadly weapons, and we have tens of millions of soon-to-be-angry seniors over Medicare and SS cuts, who can buy a gun at their local discount store for a hundred bucks.
This seems like a formula for revolution by armed, don’t give a damn old people, many of them terminal, who have nothing to lose, and would like to leave a personal legacy of truth and honesty in government to their children and grandchildren. SOme of these folks are already crazy, but with guns and a cause, they could be considered dangerous, and – millions of them?
Obama supports gun control they way he supported the “public option.” Window dressing by the Narcissist in Chief.
Obama is so timid though that as soon as the gun nuts start screaming about socialism again, his response will be to legalize open carry of fully automatic weapons.
Yep. Worthless son-of-a-bitch.
I’m amazed that Obama even stuck his toe in the water regarding guns. How very “left” of him. s/
The only thing that obama does not do “gingerly” is BLOW REPUBLICANS!
And people didn’t believe larry sinclair…
Your comments about seniors is just plain crazy. What’s wrong with you?
obama knows he has no integrity to provide leadership in the anti-union/anti-worker/anti-middle-class climate we see today.
He knows that a timid statement about guns will soon be shoved down the memory hole.
And then he can go back to doing the “hard work” of his corporate masters.
Another book on its way to you.
Obama stands for nothing. i sometimes visualize him (even while he’s doing his silver-tongued schtick) as one of those balloony things that you see blowing atop the opening of a car dealership or a BBQ joint…….just waving in the breeze. Full of hot air is the only way he stands at all.
Made no sense. I can’t figure what s/he is talking about.
I’m rather amazed that the Great Pretender said anything about gun control, but then again, there’s this little thingie going on in Japan that’s sorta distracting the rubes, so why not now? Seems like Obama’s *timing* is “good” cover for him.
As someone else opined, I expect any efforts at any kind of gun control by President Opposite to be just like the Public Option, which was quite popular amongst the majority of voters (but not so much by BigPharma or BigIns). O’s words about gun control will be twisted by BigGunz’nAmmo to bring out the screaming crazies, and that’ll be that. Mark my words…
Really politically stupid to open a can of worms with a stupid op-ed which does not address the problem in any way at all. Handguns are readily available at gun shows and Flea Markets with no paperwork and no waiting period. Many States have ridiculous pro-gun laws. In Florida, it is lawful to own as many unregistered guns as you want. In Florida, you can shoot someone in public if you “feel threatened”.
Rush Limbaugh is going to kick O’s ass over this. Then O will have to apologize for desecrating the memory of Charlton Heston.
heh… thanks for that image; quite agree; good call.
Wow! I don’t know what to say, except thank you, very much indeed. :)
Why then, Obama can “strike a pose” with a cardboard life-size cut-out of Heston – smiling to beat the band – just like he did recently with cardboard Sainted Ronnie of the Raygunz on Time Magazine:
http://www.time.com/time/covers/0,16641,20110207,00.html
Someone brougt this copy of Time to my house recently, and I had to flip it over very fast before my eyes melted out of my head.
Why doesn’t Obama just declare he’s a hard-right NeoCon Republican and be DONE with it???? (rhetorical mostly)
Slim volume but Tariq says volumes.
Great photo on the cover of that. I’ll check into that one. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, too.
Can’t wait.
Vogue
Can’t – he was annointed buy wall-street to be chimpy’s third term. Not even the movers-and-shakers of the repug party wanted mclame/palin to win.
In obama, they had a trojan horse that would pick up where dur chimpfurher left off and, after destroying the Dem party, repugs would be able to dominate politics for a generation.
You’ll be jumping up and down sayin’, “Fuckin’ A ditty bag. Right fuckin’ on.” Guaranteed.
What would make governors like Walker, Snyder, Kasich, Scott, Brewer, Christie,…respond to anything President Obama wants? What punishment does he have for them or incentive to kick gun ownership information to the national level?
He placed an op-ed in the Arizona Star. The state where a majority is convinced that Obama is coming after their guns. So much so that they showed up at an Obama health care town hall with open carry and an “assualt weapon” (the press’s definition) trying to provoke an incident with the Secret Service.
Does not seem like a statement of policy change to me. It seems like putting the ball for effective screening in Gov. Brewer’s court. It throws the “enforce the laws we now have” complaint back on a politician who panders to the NRA. The editorial is essentially telling Jan Brewer to get off her superannuated butt and get her data into the federal database. Wonder how he’ll be received on his next trip to Scottsdale or Yuma?
That might not be ballsy in California, New York, or Massachusetts, but I can think of two dozen states where it would be, and Arizona heads the list.
Well, I’ll be saying “fuckin’ A ditty bag” but then I was a squid…
Obama is endorsing whatever people want to read into the op-ed.
He’s honing his mirroring skills for the re-election campaign: I am whatever you want me to be.
If O would have posed with Reagan like that before the election, Sarah Palin would be Vice President right now.
O should be on his knees and the Gipper’s zipper should be open. (Reagan famously loved getting head.) And O loves to polish GOP knobs.
Surely then, we’d have had a complete overdose of Right Wing Fuckery instead of Bipartisan Right Wing Fuckery pretending to be lefty.
Agree with your points. Absolutely… and yet so very frustrating – eh?
ew ew ew… NOW I really need brain bleach, but I cannot argue with what you said. That Time cover is bad enough as it is… ick ick triple ick
You don’t understand the gun-show loophole.
The “gun show loophole” is mostly a myth. If a gun dealer sets up a table at a gun show, then they have to go through the same paperwork that they always do.
Where the alleged loophole comes from is that federal law does not require that a handgun transfer between two private individuals in the same state go through an FFL. Private individuals may obtain a table at a gun show for the purpose of selling off some of their private collection. It is however a federal offense for a private individual to knowingly transfer a firearm to a prohibited person, and there’s nothing stopping those two private individuals from making that transaction outside of a gun-show.
Wonder how much his campaign committee will have to pay folks to show up. Nah, he’ll do all his campaigning on da teebee. No embarrassing no-show crowds to contend with.
Looks like I’ll be doing just that! Need to pass it on when I’m done (which is what I do anyway).
obama knows that his love for nuclear power plants is a potential liability right now – so he “enters” gun control debate with some mealy-mouth crap without any meaningful action.
This is just a distraction and it keeps us from asking some really important questions about energy policy, worker rights, the economy, and foreign policies.
And don’t forget his endless unfunded wars (yes – he now fully owns them).
To obama, this was a safe move and an attempt to change the dialog to something that really is not important right now.
Yeah: strike a pose. That’s all the Posuer in Chief is able to do.
More than frustrating – absolutely scary. The repugs are clearly showing us the direction they want to take the country.
obama does not have a different vision and certainly does not have the backbone to do anything about it if he did.
The only hope will be to eventually convince the majority of dems that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and treason are not OK because now it is “our guy” committing them.
True. Something that’s not *as* important right now but may effectively derail important discussions about nuclear energy, our own nuclear plants & whether they are safe enough or not, discussions about green energy/ technology, etc. Yep: good derailment, whilst also predictably riling up the ‘Baggerz for no real reason, except for the “look over there” distraction factor.
It’s about waking up trad-dems and other left-leaning folks to what’s really happening. I have a heck of hard time getting the discussions rolling with trad-Dem friends; they simply don’t want to hear it. I feel that they have become as brainwashed as anyone on the right.
It is scary…
Nah, it keeps the talking heads and others from asking questions. It makes us ask more questions.
Once again O finds the sweet spot guaranteed to piss off the left & the right to the max: too weak for the left & anything is too much for the right.
OT– WOO HOO! FDL just topped 500 members! Congratulations!!
On the surface, it may appear to be a “good distraction” and a safe one for him, BUT the events in Japan, Wisconsin, Michigan, and across the nation are much bigger than the “hopey changey” guy.
He will not succeed in changing the dialog, he looks stooooopid to those that pay attention, and he just further undermines his credibility on everything else he says.
Cahnstance is having an attack of the crazies. Must be that spring is coming.
Heh, mine are still sacked out in the windows, soakin’ up da rays.
But they don’t answer the questions we ask!
We just get more of the same (and more distractions).
That shit worked for him the first time, but now that he has a record to run on, maybe not.
In less than a week. Not too shabby.
SouthernDragon @ 45: Hawt stuff!
I have an Obamabot friend. Talk about denial. I’m beginning to think he could rationalize the sun falling from the sky. You’re right, doesn’t want to hear it.
“the broken American mental health system that never gave Loughner care he clearly needed.” UH, I believe it was his parents responsibility, not society’s. BTW, wasn’t it Sarah Palin’s fault??
TROLL ALERT !
Yes, many dems are as out-of-touch, delusional, and brainwashed as any teabagger or repug-that-is-not-a-billionaire.
obama has lost many of the regulars at dailykos – this is going to hurt in 2012
Some insane websites like thinkprogress and washingtonmonthly mock repugs 24/7 yet give obama and dems a free pass each and every time he capitulates to them.
What could possibly be more insane than proclaiming that repugs are the problem and failing to acknowledge the many many ways obama and dems capitulate and empower them time and time again.
Thank you, alamode, for informing us that you think Loughner was Sarah Palin’s fault.
If one’s parents are wealthy enough to pay for mental health care that might fly. Loughner’s parents clearly don’t fall into that category. There was a time when mental health care could be had in almost every state. No more. Do you have any idea what psychiatrists/psychologists charge per session or the cost of neuroleptic medication?
I also agree with those who made the point that this is an attempt to distract from the nuke disaster in Japan & O’s close ties to the ind.
Seems like a really stupid way to do that, but O hasn’t done much smart stuff since the inauguration.
Got his kids a dog is the only thing I can think of.
obama was not fraudulently hoisted upon the American public as “change you can believe in” so that he could do anything smart.
It is not part of his job description.
I forgot about that. LOL
I’m speaking from both his corp masters’ POV as well as from ours. He’s lost a lot of support from both groups.
Obama’s dog.
At least the dog seems to have some backbone.
BTW, I love the sculpture in the picture accompanying the one in this post. There may be more than one of them, but the one I’m familiar with is on the U.N. Plaza in NYC.
Bo gets all his needs met by the women in the household. Obama would make him crazy.
He is doing his corporate masters just fine!
I’m sure in his extreme case he gets donations and gov. help.
Correct.
Actually, if you go to a gun show, you will likely see signs saying “All gun laws will be strictly observed” or something similar. Usually, there will be at least one FFL holder there to do both the paperwork and make the call for the instant background checks and report the results.
The thing is, anyone can do a private transaction with anyone else to transfer a gun, but if you do the transaction without using an FFL, then the transferor (seller) is exposed to criminal liability if the person he transfers the gun to is a “prohbited person”.
And the list of who is a prohibited person is long – people who have a domestic violence restraining order against them, people adjudicated as drug addicts/drunkards/mentally ill, felons, people who live in a state different than the transferor – for starters. Frankly, anyone who does a private transfer without going through an FFL and a background check is an idiot. Most FFLs will do a check and act as – in essence – a broker for a private transaction for about 20 or 30 bucks. Risking 5 to 10 in a federal pen to save 20 or 30 bucks is the sign of an idiot or a criminal, neither of which one wants to deal with.
BWAH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!
And when I was underage, every bar I went into had a sign that they check IDs!
Needless to say, I was able to get sh!tfaced buying any and all the booze I wanted at all of these establishments that I wanted.
Put up a sign, yeah! That will show them. And if not, we can always send a sternly worded letter!
Unless the buyer or seller turns themselves in how does anyone know?
More to the point, this is OBama sticking a pointed stick in the eyes of both parties’ bases.
He will stir up the wingnuts who believe he’s going to take their guns and make them into Muslims. These folks are, largely, Palinites. Teabaggers. In the context of the Repug Establishment declaring war this week on St. Sarah of the North, stirring up the Palinites is smart politics, because it helps keep the weakest Repug candidate viable and causes more division among the Repugs.
He will also stir up the O-bots who will now believe “he’s doing something for us. Let us worship.” And the scary wingnuts showing up at Congressional town halls and the like with their black guns will scare the shit out of the Dem base, all the better to motivate the Dem base to work for O’s re-election.
Moreover, by reopening a recently scabbed-over wound, it prevents the dispossessed (who, on the right, make up the majority of the Teabaggers and Palinites) and the anti-corporatists (who, on the left, make up the core of the Dem opposition to Obama) from further reaching out to each other. Jane was on to this a long time ago, when she tried to reach out to the schlubs on the right who are getting screwed by the same corporatocrats who are demolishing the middle class. By reigniting open, rhetorical warfare between the wingnuts and the anti-corporatist, liberal base, Obama keeps the left and right from uniting against the corporatocrats whom he serves.
All in all, it’s smart politics on O’s part, looking toward his campaign and taking care of his real base – the bankers, warmongerers and torturers.
He won’t get any donations but he’ll get plenty of govt help now.
Well, for an easy example, when the cops show up at Jimmy Wifebeater’s place and Mrs. Wifebeater’s call said “he’s got a gun”, one of the questions Jimmy’s going to have to answer is “where did you get it?” When Jimmy is looking at 5 to 10 in the federal pen (or state pen) for being a prohibited person n possession of a gun, he’ll roll on the guy who sold it to him.
In practicing law, I once had a witness in a case – a prisoner who ratted out his cellmate for saying he was going to hide the razor in his waistband the next time the guards handed them out, so he could slash a guard’s throat. The ratting prisoner was asked why he turned in his cellmate (ratting being a bad thing to do in jail) and his answer was “I like a nice clean shave. If he does that, the guards won’t give us razors to shave, and I won’t get a shave.” If someone will roll on his cellmate for a nice clean shave, they’ll surely roll when faced with years in jail.
some good points, one issue voters suck.
LOL If it keeps him from getting violent I’ll donate to keep him on his meds!
Walk into a gun shop with that attitude and you’ll be seeing the door on your way out in short order.
Like I said, you don’t have to go through an FFL to transfer a gun if you don’t want to, but you’re an idiot not to. And, if you go through an FFL, he will put you through all the same paperwork and the instant check, just like anyone else. It’s his livelihood and his freedom and he is surely neither going to give you his shop nor go to jail for you.
That’s assuming he even knows the seller’s name. Quite an assumption
Problem is there’s too many idiots and greedy f-cks out there.
Exactly – obama does not work for us and he knows it. More and more people are seeing it.
obamabots never will, but then, that is why they are obamabots.
Most of America will not agree, in 2012, that we saw change we could believe in.
You obviously haven’t bought a gun in West Allis, Wisconsin! More cop-killing guns have been sold out of this store than any other in America!
If you don’t think I can buy a gun at any gun store while I make smart-alek pro-NRA remarks that mock gun laws, you don’t know what you are talking about.
Good analysis of another dimension of the politics of this very political op-ed. Not sure how much notice it gets beyond Arizona however. I mean outside the lefty and righty blogosphere. So I guess it’s to keep us so rhetorically polemically busy that we forget about more important issues.
Gingerly indeed…
obama is a coward and a fraud.
I never thought I’d have anything in common with my repub co-workers … and now, we can “all get along” — Obama (Soetoro?) is useless … I am truly freaked out at having something/anything in common with those people … might as well have voted for McPain-in-the-Ass and Tundra-Woman … at least Tundra-Woman looks hot in skirts and heels … the First Wookie, not so much …
No, he won’t.
Bloomberg’s spies at the Arizona gun show proved how easily dealers provided weapons to people who told them they couldn’t pass the background check: a specific class of people who cannot be sold guns.
Same, same from Obama. His idea of governing is to dupe the people into thinking he’s advocating for change, when in reality it’s really about protecting the status quo and the profits of the wealthy corporate elite. Grow some balls Obama and please lose the arrogance. People just can’t take anymore bullshit.
