The team at MichaelMoore.com is streaming live video all day long from protests in Lansing, the latest site to see a backlash to Republican-led efforts to weaken the rights of workers. Moore says that over 6,000 protesters occupied the Rotunda in the Capitol as of an hour ago. About a thousand stayed overnight last night.
Marcy is closer to this situation, but as I understand it, the protests are not solely over the “emergency financial managers” position. For instance, 1,000 seniors rallied yesterday in Lansing specifically over Gov. Rick Snyder’s plan to tax pensions. Indeed, it’s Snyder’s proposed budget that represents a true reverse-Robin Hood stance:
Gov. Rick Snyder (R-MI) has proposed ending his state’s Earned Income Tax Credit, cutting a $600 per child tax credit, and reducing credits for seniors, while also cutting funding for school districts by eight to ten percent. At the same time, as the Michigan League for Human Services found, the state’s business taxes would be reduced by nearly $2 billion, or 86 percent, under Snyder’s plan:
Business taxes would be cut by 86 percent from an estimated $2.1 billion in FY 2011 to $292.7 million in FY 2013, the first full year of the proposed tax changes…Taxes on individuals from the state income tax would rise by $1.7 billion or nearly 31 percent, from an estimated $5.75 billion in FY 2011 to $7.5 billion in FY 2013, the first full year of the tax changes.
As the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy found, the practical upshot of Snyder’s tax increases is to place even more of a burden on Michigan’s poorest residents, who will see a bigger hike than those at the upper end of the income scale.
People aren’t appreciating the role of corporate tax cuts in all the plans of these right-wing governors. They are exacerbating their states’ budget problems and then sticking the elderly, poor and infirm with the bill, along with the unions. As one senior said yesterday, “It’s about our governor taking our money and giving it to big business.”
Incidentally, when he was elected, Rick Snyder was seen as the most moderate of the Republican governors ushered in last year.
That’s not to minimize the emergency financial managers provision, which has already passed both chambers of the Legislature and is awaiting the Governor’s signature. The bill would allow the Governor to appoint emergency financial managers with expanded powers (there were already EFMs in Michigan), who could terminate union contracts, fire local officials and even dissolve entire local governments. An earlier version, which allowed the EFM to be a corporation, was dropped. Still, this looks to be a total assault on the entire concept of democracy. Even supporters call it “financial martial law.”
Despite the smaller crowds for the protests, Rick Snyder has seen his approval ratings drop markedly as the news of his budget and his financial martial law plan has been disseminated. And taxing pensions proves to be an unpopular idea, opposed 53-41.
We’ve seen this across the Midwest, where Republican Governors making power grabs have become instantly unpopular. It’s particularly true in Ohio, where John Kasich would get beat by 15 points if an election were held today against his opponent from November, Ted Strickland. This is having a drafting effect on other statewide races, as Sherrod Brown now looks comfortably ahead for re-election. In this case, Brown, a strong supporter of unions, actually deserves the support.
The youth-labor wave continues…

Great, a big step in the right direction. Go Michiganders!
Even so, must we use the word “uprising” so liberally? These protests, like Wisconsin, are as inocuous as you can get and still be called protests.
Which is why they don’t work.
Haley from mississippi must know that the only states the GOP will win in 2012 will be in the South, thus why this Dummy is running to lose in 2012.
Old Haley dumb, dumb, is laughing at Mitt, Sarah, Huck, and Newt, he knows they are wasting time, because his stupid peers have destroyed the GOP nationally.
actions like this by GOP governors like Walker and Synder will make it hard for Trojan Horse Dems like Obama to play let us reach across the aisle and work with a WACKO from the GOP. :)
Obama how is the mythical center looking now? :) David Axelrod, David Plouffe, do you still think, progressives and unions want to hear about working with GOP wackos? :)
Me Thinks Obama will be the only person in 2012, talking about the mythical middle, all Dem Senators will be force to run from the left.
Walker and Synder are destroying the mythical center, good for them.
Completely OT, but can we get rid of the video ads? I’ve got two running on this page right now. Trying to stream David’s video and being forced to stream Honda and Digits ads at the same time makes my browser unhappy.
Except in Michigan’s case, it looks like the law might be Unconstitutional.
Thanks for the update on this, which, per usual, is getting next to no coverage elsewhere. Hope the good citizens in Michigan can make the needed changes and stem the tide.
As for Michigan, good on ‘em! This is the voice of the people. A pop-shot on the face of the GOP.
It’s good to know there are some politicians willing point out what a crock of shit the “shared sacrifice” meme is. Even a lot of Vichycrats have adopted that line.
Republicans back in power = people on the streets.
It’s good to see my home state rising up.
I’m seeing serious opposition rising up to Governor Corbett’s proposed budget in Pennsylvania. Looks like there’s a chance this could become a new location for protests as well.
But there’s a catch.
The rethugs will claim balancing the budget is an important public purpose.
It’s amazing how unpopular these Republican governors are, yet they still managed to win. Just goes to show what a catastrophe Obama was for Democrats during that election.
I did say “might” be unconstitutional. I’m not going to waste my time with you anymore since you have become determined to argue with everything I type.
The tax increase could be as much as 1.1% of total income!
Obama is as toxic as Bush was in 2008
Dems in DC better wake up, Obama is not helping you, he is killing you politically
when a president says Nuclear Power is safe, and you may have a Nuclear Meltdown taking place in Japan, this is borderline Palin Stupid.
The only reason the rethugs are back in power is because they have perfected the art of stealing elections so that no one suspects they were stolen.
iVoodooTronic voting = no audit trail.
Paper ballots in all elections. Open counting of all votes in all precincts.
Thanks for this link!
There would seem to be solid grounds for challenging the constitutionality of the shotgun law.
Tennessee is also seeing protests over anti-union bill.
Way to go Michigan! Plus a special kudos to Michael Moore, now you know why the Republicans hate him so much, he speaks the truth. It has never been more evident that “we, the people” can push our government to do what’s right if enough of us band together and show them the way. Proud of all of you!
The POTUS is busy picking his march madness picks while japan and the world is facing an unprecedented crisis. while here at home the middle class are under attack. I am so sick of this obvious puppet in chief. the system is just one big fraud and it can only continue so long as we give it validity.
BTW POTUS and his family off to SAmerica this weekend. Guess we can see clearly his priorities.
The WI Repubs didn’t pay any attention to the protests and it will be the same in Michigan – until there is a strike or violence, nothing will happen until all the recalls start happening.
I think it is time you stopped using your energy to get the govt to do what is right and take back your power and work with like minded people to do what you know is right. this govt is beyond corrupt and beyond saving
some are paying close attention :D
it also reeks of no taxation without representation
Welcome to the front lines, Michigan. We’re keeping the pressure up in Wisconsin as the recalls and general budget move along. The more exposure this gets, the better.
Now let’s see if the MSM covers any of it tonight. Yeah, I know, my hopes are not up.
Damn HAARP ate my last jelly donut.:-)
Some Dems in DC are starting to wake up to the fact that Obama may be toxic in 2012, and he is not that into Dems
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/16/anthony-weiner-obama-not-a-values-guy_n_836664.html#comments
Anthony Weiner basically says Obama stands for nothing, something all of us at FDL figured out a long, long, long time ago.
better late than never Anthony :)
The problem is sales tax, not income tax. The poor pay next to nothing in MI income tax.
Well I don’t entirely agree with you re MM. I saw him on TV and rather
than make practical suggestions (like starting recalls) he was talking
about demonstrations. My (MI) rep is also pushing a bill to let the ISDs
(Intermediate School Districts) provide the Superintendent’s functions for
rural districts which I live in. But these districts are so small that the
Supts. do lots of jobs like bus scheduling, finance etc. Something the ISD
won’t be able to take on. We do need to consolidate though-we’ve got 7 high
schools when only 2 would serve (closing 5 buildings` WOULD be useful). But current
MI law places a barrier there-can only consolidate districts that “touch” ,and can’t
guarantee preservation of current elementary school distribution (which IS desirable)
Any future combined BOE could close these on a majority vote.Incidentally,$ could be
also saved by sending only 1 Republican to legislature;they ALL vote the SAME.And yes many of
us did note $1.9B to business added to $1.4B hole.Univ cut 20%. Rural areas may lose
Fed Essential Air Service support too (7 hrs by car to nearest large city)
ed schultz, has been a bit of an Obama supporter for quite a while, but, not so much anymore.
worth listening to lately, the blinkers are off for Ed.
He is covering assaults on workers for most of his show, most days. He’s calling out Obama and the rest of the democrats very strongly.
Woot!
Santa is going to need some new reindeer this year…
On Wisconin!
On Michigan!
On Florida!
On New Jersey!
On Tennessee!
On Pennsylvania!
…
Then maybe Santa will bring us a real democracy for Christmas this year ; )
“it also reeks of no taxation without representation”
If only that worked in reverse so that corporations that pay no taxes would receive no representation and be forced to sit out the political process all together instead of buying election results.
Good for Michigan. I’m heartened to see protests against these attacks on workers spread across the midwest.
Same old GOP story; rich against the poor.I hope that 21 months is not too long to forget about these sob’s when voting time comes. It seems that Dems need to be kicked around some before they get up and fight.Synder is going to kick the shit out of seniors and the working poor.In the SW corner of the state you have the strong hold of the ex-ceo of blackwater and his dad, like all the fake GOP christians these people are backing Synder and putting fake christian beliefs out front while they hose the shit out of the poor. Dirty SOB’s
Corbett’s budget seems about as draconian as any we’ve seen so far. Naturally, gas firms were taken care of by the lap dog in Harrisburg. The rest of us will just have to scale back so that the market can freely enrich the already rich. Government by the GOP is akin to government by crack dealers — merciless greed run amok.
Violent acts by protesters will only justify violent acts by police. The police hold a decisive edge in this kind of conflict.
Way to go, phred! I love it.
Couple of items I saw while motoring over here:
Wisconsin protests–at DC lobbying firm.
Michigan protests against financial martial law
Seconded.
sort of just like when you have a President say “Offshore drilling will be expanded!” and then you have a Macondo Deepwater Clusterfuck blowout that creates a dead zone in the Gulf… Yeah, I think we are seeing a pattern here!
Oh, and when the Banks fucked over the economy, he made sure to give them the rest of the treasury. Because if they were already too big to fail as it was, then it made sense to make them even bigger (snark)!
My guess is that Obama looks at problems like fighting fire with fire. He sees a fire, so he throws accelerant on it to make more fire. Because he thinks that is what “fighting fire with fire” means. The concept of a controlled fire break doesn’t cross his mind. Just like the concept of breaking up banks doesn’t cross his mind. Or the concept of REGULATING industries. OR the concept of creating JOBS by CLOSING CORPORATE TAX LOOPHOLES that reward offshoring of jobs and incentivize the creation of tax havens offshore!
Remember the look on Bush’s face in the elementary school when they told him about 9/11?
That is the look on Obama’s face from Inauguration day to now. Complete emptiness and deer-in-headlights trance.
South America?!?! I suppose he isn’t willing to go to Hawaii huh? Not when it might be at risk of nuclear fallout. Hawaii just dodged a Tsunamic disaster, and he doesn’t even have the courage to visit them and show his leadership and support of the people of his birthplace?!?
We elected him to go into that damn house and take charge and clean the damn house out. Not to become a fucking butler to mock those of us left out in the damn cold!
Michael Moore is our joy! Who cares what the R’s think! Several of my friends are attending and we can’t wait to hear how it went when they return.
However, relying on legalities will not stop R evil simply because it takes too long and they now have it in place.
Time for real physical actions like protests, boycotts, shutdowns. Emailing ain’t going to cut.
It is a power struggle so lets take their power away and not rely on evening news, though it helps.
I think the unions will gain nothing with reason. Any attempts to sell us short or wait for a chance to “cooperate” (f___ them) will be an embarrassment and a failure. Union leadership needs to kicked all the way to
SHUTDOWN! Just stay home everybody- they will get the point when parents don’t have teachers at school and when the offices in their building don’t have any staffing. They want to see how much power they don’t have?
Great. Lets show them and stop them in their tracks.
SHUTDOWN. SHUTDOWN. SHUT THE WHOLE DAMN THING DOWN. Solidarity. We can not let them do this to Michigan. Michael? Call a shutdown! Bring it on for the folks of Michigan. Practice your civil disobedience and follow your conscience for the greater good.
I may disagree with you. MM is doing what he does best and he will get it on film. We desperately need that coverage. What is your issue? You can certainly do recall without him. On the school Superintendent issue- what are you trying to say? Small school models have always been the most desirable, in fact whole towns survive around them in rural areas. They are a hub for community and they offer jobs- pretty important these days. Your rep may not be doing you a favor if he is making this push to centralize. That is not the answer. Its massive defunding of schools by Rick the Sick. There are several programs to bring smaller school models into (inside of) the larger high schools and for a reason. These are not factories, despite Obama attempts to make them that way.
ISD’s? That is more divide and conquer tactics. Shut the schools down and lets see how everyone likes it. Disrespect the teachers? Taking all the money away? What will become of the students? Does Snyder care? NO.
If we do then it is time to do something drastic to protect our interests.
Neither does Weiner.
He’s gotten in line every time and will continue to do just that.
Another self serving whore, in it for himself like every other DC pol.
I did not rule out strikes as being effective. I claimed that violent acts are counterproductive. They are counterproductive because violent acts justify violent repressive acts by the police. The police specialize in just this kind of thing. So….
