Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced at a Pentagon briefing that President Obama has authorized the use of armed Predator drones over Libya. The unmanned planes have been used extensively in the Afghanistan and Pakistan missions, among other places. In fact, an amendment to the latest FAA Authorization bill, if passed by Congress, would allow for the use of drones in US airspace. So why not Libya?
Drawing another line in the sand after crossing several, Gates said that the President was holding firm on ground troops in Libya, vowing not to send them. Regime change “was always a political goal” best accomplished from inside Libya, Gates said, and the US role in the conflict was to provide space for that regime change by reducing Moammar Gadhafi’s military capability.
So far, that hasn’t been entirely successful, with the eastern front stalemated and Gadhafi forces still shelling Misurata. In fact, the success announced today, that rebels have secured part of the western border with Tunisia, was accomplished without the use of any coalition planes at all.
However, there’s this pressure to “do more” to help the rebels, and so here come the drones. Marine General James Cartwright said in the briefing that the drones are “uniquely suited” for urban combat areas to minimize civilian casualties. I’m sure that will come as a great comfort to Afghan wedding parties. And the Pakistani government, which called for an end to the drone program a couple weeks ago.

Let’s get the required: Who coulda anticipated out of the way at the top.
Why do I keep seeing an old Bugs Bunny/Yosemite Sam cartoon where Bugs keeps daring Sam to cross the lines in the sand he draws until Sam crosses one time many lines and goes off the cliff?
Did he really say drones are “uniquely suited” for urban combat?
It won’t be long before President Chris Christie is targeting Public service Union offices in the US with these drones.
Border patrol, urban combat, policing our neighborhoods.
Hillary keeps talking about the cluster bombs Gaddafi is using
Would it be impolite to point out that Hillary voted against banning their use in civilian areas?

I bet there are a bunch of Pakistanis who would disagree with that statement.
WTF. Looks to me like more of that attitude of “We’ve got a bright shiny new hammer and everything’s a nail!” I am beginning to wonder if we have to put most of Washington, DC in prison to shut these wars down.
T’wouldn’t be impolite. But it would make you sanctimonious purist. /s
Because Joe Biden is remarkably similar to Yosemite Sam in attitude, intelligence, and demeanor.

clownsdrones seems to be Mr. Obama’s version of a stimulus package for the most needy. The non-invasion and non-regime change don’t seem to be going well; entirely predictable. But Mr. Obama should admit that he’s at war; he’s not policing anything except public commentary.Touché, earl.
This jokey moment of Obama is looking worse and worse with age.

AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen David Dayen:
Where are these aweful things made and who’s got the contract? I think we can hear a couple a million “ka-CHING”s every time one drops in on a family at supper.
Obama’s lookin more and more like LBJ all the time…but after taday I think he’s not gunna be seen at a lot more “town halls” if he gets shelled at his fund raisers. Don’t they see it comin’ for Christ’s sake??!!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Years of drone failure to get Ossama suggest Gadhafi will die of old age before we get him. Why doesn’t Obama just admit failure now?
Seconded Drones have been a failure for years someone with clout keeps them getting funded.
I agree. I’m sure that the drones are not “uniquely suited for urban warfare”. Unless you can assume that everyone beyond a certain line are military.
It looks for all the world like hammer-nail. Plus replacing them creates jobs.
Based on what I saw at the beginning and this decision, I would recommend keeping the US military as far away from strategic and tactical decisions as possible.
A Dunkirk-style evacuation of civilians from Misurata is what is needed. Turkish ships have been evacuating the wounded, but there is need for more ships to evacuate civilians who aren’t wounded–including the guest workers who have been trapped at the port of Misurata.
.
Any bets a certain Marine General wants to retire to a cushy corporate board job?
Citizen TCU:
Nobody wannned ta get Osama…the Saudis woulda sent a couple a airliners at the White House if they had got ‘im.
No, they don’t. They’re clueless about what people outside the Village think. When the administration sez it doesn’t follow the polls, they’re only half lying. Polls that favour them they tout. Polls that don’t they ignore.
Drones target supposed terrorists in Pakistan in open fields but either the intel is wrong or the drones have crappy aim and they still kill civilians.
Imagine how much more the damage will be in a crowded city.
Sorry my mistake :)
Every day, we take away the human rights of a another small part of the world.
Well, shit, they’re coming for us, now.
Once we get used to surveillance drones flying around, the next step will be arming them. They’ll use armed drones to hunt down criminals once local municipalities can no longer afford a police force. The drones will serve as judge, jury, and executioner; kaboom.
Sure, there might be some collateral damage or the occasional death of the wrong target, but hey, nobody cared about it happening in Pakistan or Afghanistan.
Look at the bright side. I’m sure every government official involved will apologize to the families each and every time.
We’ll just have to learn to live with it.
Killing us to keep us safe. Got a problem with that?
Cognitive Dissonance Obama thinks everyone loves him except the dirty hippies. I suspect Obama’s aids do see this coming and will invent a terror threat so Obama can speak only to pre screened for Loyalty crowds in the future.
Wow… who could’ve predicted THIS? I’m shocked, I tell you, shocked… /s
Someone’s making a LOT of money, thanks to YOU and ME, the middle/lower class taxpayer.
And some innocent citizens in a ME country are getting killed and maimed, thanks to YOU and ME, the middle/lower class taxpayer. No, we didn’t “approve” of this (well, actually, some DID), but it’s OUR money that’s being spent to fund this, er, kinetic military action.
Sigh… all we have been saying since forever is give peace a chance, but it’s not as lucrative as bombing the shite out of dusky folks.
Drones depend either on specific intelligence and accurate location of targets or on the drone pilot’s (in Nevada, remember) ability to interpret accurately what he/she is seeing on the drone’s camera. Intelligence is always subject to the actions of double agents or of mistranslations from the local language. To understand the interpretation issue, try finding the military bases in Sirte on Google Maps. Or try to identify trucks in Google Maps of Misurata. And these were taken when there was not a war going on.
The other issue is what happens if the weapons fire from the drone misses an actual military target at which it was aimed. Where do those rounds wind up?
NATO (and the US) because of their mandate must worry about these issues. Gaddafi’s troops, however, are under no such constraints.
Eventually, other nations’ predator drones will be fying in the U.S.
The technology will exist.
“Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced at a Pentagon briefing that President Obama has authorized the use of armed Predator drones over Libya.”
I’m guessing this was Biden’s idea

It seems that the only thing Amerika is good at anymore is blowing shit up and raining Hell Fire down on those who reject our version of Peace and Freedom and they got Oil.
