Newt Gingrich is in the midst of the worst Presidential campaign rollout in history. He criticized the singature, litmus-test policy of the Republican Party, the Paul Ryan budget, one that Republicans in the House voted for 235-4. He generated such a backlash that he had to personally apologize to Paul Ryan. He received a nasty constituent response I don’t think Pol Pot ever received. He asserted that he wasn’t ready for the sharp questioning of David Gregory – this from a man who has appeared on Meet the Press 35 times. And the coup de grace came last night on Greta Van Susteren.
I want to make sure every House Republican is protected from some kind of dishonest Democratic ad. So let me say on the record, any ad which quotes what I said on Sunday is a falsehood. Because I have said publicly those words were inaccurate and unfortunate and I’m prepared to stand up… When I make a mistake — and I’m going to on occassion — I want to share with the American people “that was a mistake” because that way we can have an honest conversation.
Any ad, by the way, which quotes what I just quoted is a falsehood of a falsehood. Falsehood.
This isn’t the first time Newt has complained about political ads taking his words out of context. Heck, this isn’t the first time Newt has complained about political ads taking his words about Medicare out of context. In 1996, Gingrich gave a speech where he said, much like on Meet the Press, that seniors should be given an option of a private health insurance or Medicare, and that he believed that, as a result, Medicare would “wither on the vine” because seniors would choose to abandon it. Democrats pounced and ran ads that quoted Gingrich’s “wither on the vine” comment. Gingrich, thin-skinned as ever, went ballistic. But Democrats were quoting him accurately then. And they would be quoting him accurately now. Gingrich wants to degrade Medicare by offering privatization, narrowing the risk pool, and encouraging the destruction of the government-run program. And despite his protestations, Gingrich still believes this.
But this effort to put a fence around comments before the ads get cut is a new wrinkle.
All I’ll say is this: when your political party is so desperate for a viable candidate that they’re begging George W. Bush’s budget director to come in and be the savior, you have a problem.

Hah! Paul Ryan is completely clueless about what is going on outside of the beltway. So, apparently, is Newt Gingrich… though I agree with him that taking on Medicare is a bit too much right now, with so many people out of work and out of money.
Remember back when Newt was the far-right ideological bombthrower who worked to shove the last of the Rockefeller Republicans into toeing the new hard-right line? Now the line’s move so far to the right into Crazy Land that he gets scorched for saying things in line with what he’s always said.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen David dayen:
Does Mitch Daniels even want to be seen within 4 years of this election? Seems to me that with Petraeus confined to solitary in the CIA and the very real possibility of the fascists losin’ the House, maybe Daniels might wanna leave the wreckage behind and ride in atop Citizens United money in 2016.
Unless the oilagarchy wants ta make losin the wars the issue in the election and breaks Petraeus out of his golden cage, I don’t see anyone other than Romney…then we are left to the mercy of ObamaRahma’s strategic political vision and whether he actually tries to extend his coat tails or just saves his ass for another 4 years of bi-partisan divided government and the slow boilin’ off of our economy.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNTION, THE STRUGGLE GOES ON AND ON AND..
Shorter Newt Gingrich: “If I say something publicly, and it turns out to be unpopular, then I didn’t say it.”
I think the Soviet Union’s Politburo tolerated a greater diversity of opinion than today’s Republican Party.
Citizen Phoenix Woman:
How is the polarization politics workin’ out for the fascists in the Minnesota legislature, Sister PW? Seems to me that Dayton could give ObamaRahma some lessons about good policy and governance bein good politics. And is Amy K gunna toss her vows of silence and piety and show up here anytime before the next election?
The following sentence is true
The preceding sentence is false.
-N.G
Well, you can’t really blame him for that one – sharp questioning from Gregory would be about as likely as winning the lottery.
Twice.
Without buying a ticket.
Thanks David. Some times it’s nice to see a punk-ass bully run down by the karma train.
I really hope he keeps talking He should, after all he’s a deep thinking idea man
as I said the problem of these Republicans is that they talk!
AKA, “What you think you heard isn’t what I meant to say.”
Still, one wonders whether the Reprivaticans have anything besides joke candidates this time around.
Yeah, I remember that ad very clearly. And I remember that TV stations refused to broadcast it, saying they were afraid of getting sued. And they’ll do the same thing again. It’s all part of the corporate takeover of America. Welcome to the Neo-Gilded Age.
I would contribute to running an ad based on all this great material.
Pass the popcorn!!
Don’t do what I do – as in dump my wives in nasty ways while of screwing around behind their backs, bc, as y’all know I’m such a big-time giant “family values” kinda guy (nudge nudge wink wink) – and NOW: don’t LISTEN to what I say!!!
Just, ya know… oh hell with it: listen to Rush & deal with it.
Yeah: got it, Newt… I think … maybe… you’re all screwballs with nothing much going on except kissing the @sses of the corporations and the upper 1%.
Agree X 2!
The usual will apply here: those who actually read blogs that tell the truth will know about Newt & his typical, usual b.s. about-face when his balls are nailed to the wall by the screaching T-GOPers, but no one else will.
Dumbocrats, this time around, are so beholden to their corporate masters that I seriously doubt that they’ll even try to run ads showing Newt telling the truth. Nah, why would they do that?
Newt’ll twist in the wind for an hour or two, and then it’ll be: case closed & STFU.
BAH!
Newt should just to what he does best, and smear his fellow Republicans (instead of Democrats for a change). He’s good at the smear. He just needs to redirect.
We will know for sure when we find out what happens to the first person to stop clapping at the Republican National Convention’s roll-out speech by (say) Sarah Palin.
made me laugh, thanks.
an immaculate receiption.
Newt Gingrich’s campaign has a fuct up mess from the beginning. Will he accept the inevitable and withdraw in humiliation? Humility is not his long-suit, I know, but I don’t see him making it even close to Iowa.
Newt suffers from bombshell Tourette syndrome. He can’t help it. Newt’s self immolation could not have happened to a more deserving guy.
Flipity flop, Mr Falsehood running for decider 2012.
He’ll be forced out, probably sooner than later is my guess, cuz the money will dry up. Loser.
Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect assessment.
I am glad that Newt is staying consistently inconsistent.
Let’s see…. Trump and Huckabee bowing out; Palin likely to do the same. Santorum and Gingrich shoot selves in the feet. I give it another two months and Ron Paul will be the only one left in the GOP field. I like that.
Barbour dropped out, too. There seems to be an undercurrent pushing Mitch Daniels. Now there’s the ticket! Ha! Can’t even believe his hair. The GOP might still turn to Jeb, I wouldn’t discount another Bush attack. But whatever, we’re gonna have a right-wing preznit.
Oh, and T-Paw too. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Newt’s statement about Ryan’s Medicare plan wasn’t intended to be a factual statement.
Newt should have quoted that sleaze Jon Kyl – You know the infamous…
“What I said was not intended to be factual statement”…
Republicans won’t get excited until the two chubbsies, Jeb and Gates, team up and hit the trail to 2012.
And I wouldn’t belong to any club that would have ME as a member!
If there is any doubt that the sociopaths have taken complete control of the GOP, Newt’s implosion must remove all questions. Read The Sociopath Next Door and the state of the Right in this country will make much more sense.
