I wish that headline was in any way hyperbolic. And this comes out of a five-year study, not a quick answer to deflect criticism. This is the formal opinion of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.
A five-year study commissioned by the nation’s Roman Catholic bishops to provide a definitive answer to what caused the church’s sexual abuse crisis has concluded that neither the all-male celibate priesthood nor homosexuality were to blame.
Instead, the report says, the abuse occurred because priests who were poorly prepared and monitored, and were under stress, landed amid the social and sexual turmoil of the 1960s and ’70s.
Known occurrences of sexual abuse of minors by priests rose sharply during those decades, the report found, and the problem grew worse when the church’s hierarchy responded by showing more care for the perpetrators than the victims.
The “blame Woodstock” explanation has been floated by bishops since the church was engulfed by scandal in the United States in 2002 and by Pope Benedict XVI after it erupted in Europe in 2010.
I missed the part of the Summer of Love dedicated to pedophilia. Maybe that didn’t make the director’s cut of Woodstock.
I don’t even want to grant this theory the credit of allowing it to be hypothetically true. But for a moment, I’ll do that to say this: so you mean to tell me that priests were made of such weak moral fibers that because they saw hippies on television and in their neighborhoods, they were compelled to rape altar boys? And that the blame for that rests with the hippies? And that this is the opinion of the group that is leaned upon for moral guidance by millions of people? Indeed, the argument goes that without the backbone of religion, there is only chaos in the moral universe? That’s whose representatives said this?
Here are some other gems from the report:
In one of the most counterintuitive findings, the report says that fewer than 5 percent of the abusive priests exhibited behavior consistent with pedophilia, which it defines as a “psychiatric disorder that is characterized by recurrent fantasies, urges and behaviors about prepubescent children.
“Thus, it is inaccurate to refer to abusers as ‘pedophile priests,’ ” the report says.
That finding is likely to prove controversial, in part because the report employs a definition of “prepubescent” children as those age 10 and under. Using this cutoff, the report found that only 22 percent of the priests’ victims were prepubescent.
See, you’re a full-fledged man at 10 years old, more than capable of making your own sexual decisions. That’s why the Catholic church will marry your 10 year-old without any moral compunctions whatsoever.
The bishops paid $1.8 million to conduct this study. They could have just got Joe Klein or someone to tell them to blame the hippies for quite a bit less.

BAA-WAAA-HA-HA-HA! Are these clowns serious? Who do they expect to believe this balderdash? That’s to much to ask of even the most delusional of their true believers to swallow…
As a victim of child sex abuse I have to say I find this absolutely repugnant. The Catholic Church and all of the folks therein who were complicit in this in any way should fucking hang.
They could’ve given that money to the victims or put it into a fund for psychological treatment for victims. But fuck them, right? Again?
When I think of the RCC, turmoil, and the 60s, I don’t think of hippies… I think of Vatican II.
You also missed something quite important and worthwhile about the report — it forcefully and specifically rebuts the social conservative claim that gay priests are more likely to abuse children.
Saw this overly expensive “white-wash” job in my nooz paper this am. Good thing I hadn’t eaten breakfast yet bc I started to GAG!
Eff the frackin RC Bishops & whatever other “establishment” Opus Dei types that got behind this repugnant POS lying propoganda meant – yet again – to prop up a bunch of perverts who wish to get away with child molestation and suffer no consequences, not even a tap on the wrist.
Breathing fire right now and not happy. Karma’s a bitch. That’s all I can say right now without being modded…
They are just making it worse … even worse than it was, and they apparently don’t have a clue, because if they had a clue they wouldn’t say these things or they would get some friggin’ pr advice about not saying the wrong things.
They keep showing us just who and what they are. We need to pay attention.
These are important lessons ~ perhaps more for us than for them. And of course they can’t or won’t learn anyway.
From the NYT:
And who did the preparing and monitoring? The hippies or the bishops?
As usual, management is trying to place the blame elsewhere except management.
They just keep making up more and more excuses for their unforgiveable behavior!
What burns a hole in the entire responsibility measure they try to make is when they say the Bishops will report abuse to the police! Yeah, like when Jesus walks on the earth again.
Perhaps, but do you think that’s *really* going to be pointed out, much less used in any way to back the civil rights of gays anywhere?? I doubt it. This is a white-wash job, the sole intent of which is to absolve, per usual, a bunch of powerful rich men (mostly white) from any responsibility or consequences of their egregious & heinous & frankly (bc of who they are) *sinful* actions.
It’s up to RC parishoners to determine what to do next. Full disclaimer: I am not, nor ever was, RC, but I find this despicable.
Because reporting became better, or because the level of abuse increased?
Personally I suspect reporting became better, and the practice has been occurring for at least the last two thousand years. I seem to remember the Ottoman Empire was into what we now call pedophilia, and it probably started well before the Ottomans.
There is a quote somewhere “Women are for children, boys are for pleasure”…Afghanistan?
Well isn’t it obvious why the connection wasn’t included in the picture? You should probably go back and re-study those photos of the grassy knoll. It all ties in. Everything flows from there. So…
“…scuse me while I kiss the sky…”
The Catholic Church is as corrupt now as it was during the Borgia’s and just as much in denial. What an absolutely ridiculous rationale for perversion.
Doesn’t that quote go back to the ancient Greeks?
Citizen KrisAinCA:
Bless your heart Citizen Kris, our family has also been horribly scarred by Catholic pedophilia and the damage done to individuals is extended to the larger society and Western culture which after being intellectually anesthetized has been emotionaly murdered by the institutionalized Christian church over the last 2,000 years. My cousin at the age of 13 was abused by a priest and years after an undisclosed settlement and a multitude of problems with his 4 sisters, we discovered that the priest had been systematically abusing the younger sisters even in their own home over the course of several years.
The fact that Christianism and the rotting remains of the Catholic Church remain as triggers for political terrorism and what has amounted to genocide covered by “the rule of law” is the single most intractable problem in our society. Our Constitution gives us the tool to do away with the scourge of religion in our society if we have the couirage to use it. Freedom of relion is freedom FROM religion.
My heart goes out to you and your family Citizen.
Lemme see now, I’m still a hippie but little girls and boys have never been on my radar. Does that mean I’m a misfit?
Citizen SoutherDragon:
No you’re just a run of the mill diviant like the rest of us…only with a Southern accent.
edit
That’s how management operates, no matter the organization.
Pervert! /s
No, it doesn’t mean that you’re a misfit. However, do your best to refrain from being anywhere in the vicinity of any of the following: a) a RC Church, b) an RC priest, or c) an RC school.
Simply by being within a mile radius of any of the above will make YOU completely & totally *responsible* if some RC priest decides to start fiddling around… it certainly won’t be responsibility of the RC priest to, you know, exercise restraint when confronted by “hippie vibes” somewhere within a 1 mile radius… (yeah: snark, but was the $1.8 mill report being snarky by saying something relatively similiar???)
After all it was the protesters carrying “priests must be allowed to rape children” signs that set off the chicago PD in ’68
Thank you, Norske.
I hope no one wonders why our politicians are such degenerates when this is what many take their moral cues from.
Yep, normal corp double talk
*heh* A whiskey and smoke tinged, Southern accent…! ;-)
Is it possible these guys could have coped better if they weren’t celibate?
Is it possible that Obama’s lasting legacy will be hippie punching? The thing he’ll “go down in history” for?
I plan to use it the next time I hear someone blame the epidemic of clergy sex abuse on gay folks.
I generally agree with you that the bishops are attempting to deflect some of the blame for their egregious actions, but I think they’re trying to deflect it on to Vatican II rather than on to hippies.
Given the similar epidemics of abuse among the decidedly non-celibate Southern Baptist, Mormon, and ultra-Orthodox clergy, I’d have to say no. The problem is authoritarian religion, not any particular configuration thereof. And that’s an existential problem for the RCC.
Hrrm. I always heard that lyric as “s’cuse me while I kiss this guy.” No? (;>
I was raised in an enlisted military family on Catholicism and Astrology. The Catholicism did not take.
The Astrology did… and it has proven to be pretty valuable.
I will no longer have anything to do with the RC church… those white guys have no clue about the impact they have on the lives of ordinary people, especially women and children.
No one can excuse or defend the abuse – we can only condemn it.
But this post would be one sided if it was not noted that of the near 200,000 priests that have existed in the US Church since WW2, less than a thousand have been accused and fewer convicted (?my numbers are 5 years old and may have changed in the past 5 years) – indeed it may be a pedophile level that may reflect population levels of that evil, and not a Church specific level. Power and access means of course disaster when this evil is in the Church – and the cover-up “to protect the good name of the Church” made it much worse. I am aware of this evil in the history of my family for folks alive in WW2 and since – and victims were and are very close to me so please spare me any righteous replies. Yet within that small cohort of family of a few hundred, the number is only around 1%. I refuse to color the other 99% of my family as evil – and I extend this logic to the Church.
Finally, the post is written as if the Church made these statements – despite the fact it did not. The John Jay College Of Criminal Justice, a senior college of The City University of New York, did the research and made the report. Any complaints should be taken up with the reports authors.
No, pedophilia is a compulsion. The utter and malignant self-aborption of compulsives is a hallmark: nothing exists but their NEEDS. I’m not sure what you do with them because they’re so impregnably resistant to acknowledging the their behavior. I can guarantee you Schwarzenegger’s apology was pure public relations and in no way expressed how he felt. If he regrets anything, it’s getting caught out.
Your can go a long way in life revolving entirely around your own axis. Don’t think for a minute these people are just low life scum rooting around in dumpsters for scraps and dodging police. Low life scum they are, homeless cellar dwellers they’re not.
Given the pedophile rings among atheists in the EU – extending into Belgium political circles – that have been uncovered – I doubt that religion has any thing to do with this evil.
Hmm, isn’t it: ““s’cuse me while I disappear”…?
They don’t care, KarenM. There’s a difference between clueless and uncaring, made evident when clueless gets a clue and changes. Uncaring never changes.
Astrology is a wonderful way to access foundations. Have you read Betty Lundsted, Astrological Insights into Personality?
Gives whole new meaning to the rhythm method.
And people are supposed to trust these gibronies when it comes to birth control?
The RCC claims it’s a church so it should be forced to be one. It should be: 1) stripped of it sovereign nation status, 2) its banking and any hedge fund operations should be closed and liquidated, 3) its corporate holdings in hospitals that flaunt US law, its insurance underwriting operations and any other undisclosed financial operations that have nothing to do with operating a church group should be closed and liquidated. Financial penalties for representing itself as a church but operating as a business should be assessed and collected in a lump sum as dawG knows our social services programs need the money.
Red caped loons. Ptoui!
What an abuse and insult to all who are/havebeen abused everywhere, anytime.
I can’t even read it all, David, much less the links.
I sure appreciate YOU wading thru it so we don’t have to.
A pox on the CB’s, their conference and all who would abuse others in any way.
N blessings to Kris n anyone else who want it from me.
Mr. Dayen, you continue to do what most of us could not do, thank you, even when it hurts. You are a staunched soul, hoss. And a blessing to all of us.
I “good” with that.
On a related but slightly OT note, I wish that *most* churches were stipped of their tax exempt status and treated like the political/business entities that many are.
The Belgian pedophile rings were connected to the RCC… and led to the tossing of the church’s records by the Belgian authorities.
What they found was that more than 10% of Belgian Catholic priests had been the target of credible allegations of sexual abuse. Given the (continuing) failure of the RCC to address the epidemic of abuse in a credible and transparent fashion, one must assume that this is a general problem, not a specific one.
in this regard, I have no compunctions with regard to sanctity of life.
Right on.
Be well, hoss.
You make a good point, and there are some huge problems with pedophilia and the sex-slave trade in both Eastern & Western Europe that doesn’t get enough attention, imo.
That said, I don’t believe (can’t say for sure) that any church is “protecting” the pediphile rings of which you speak in Europe. Those rings may find “protection” from some other powerful organizations (again, I don’t know), but to my knowledge, not from any church.
In theory, at least, churches are meant to play a certain role in society and for the parishoners, and when the powerful in such churches perpetrate, excuse, cover up for, and otherwise ignore abuse of parishoners, esp kids, that’s a bit of a different story. The main issue here is how the “management” of the Church behaved when confronted with the abuse clearly perpetrated by those who were meant to be trustworthy.
Well you revealed something I didn’t know, which is that at least some of pedophile rings in Europe *did* enjoy the “protection” of the RCC. Thanks for the info.
OT but have say that I completely agree. Everything that’s ever been revealed about Schwartzenegger shows him to be vile & sexists, a really egotistical, self-centered jerk. FWIW, I never could figure out what Maria Shriver saw in him in the first place, but that’s as far down that road as I want to go.
It does seem that when some/many achieve power, any compassion or wisdom or self-control or moral restraint or commen sense, etc, just flies out the window. Many really do go along with the adage: do whatever the eff you feel like; don’t ask permission; just “apologize” later.
Whatever… scum is scum.
The fucking Bishops and Cardinals are playing the same tired game of Cover the Church’s Ass once again. The finger of blame can be pointed at a blind and greedy institution that only cared about power and money, and especially decided under John Paul II to make anti-abortion the litmus test for promotion of its priests to higher positions in the hierarchy. John Paul’s ultra-conservatism all but wiped out the reforms and the liberal clergy of Vatican II, and made the Church a less tolerant, far more hostile and reactionary institution. And they want to canonize the SOB? Just like Reagan, conservatives must have their Big Daddy figure to worship.
and according to the Church, anyone over the age of ten is no longer pre-pubescent, with the clear implication being that the sex was justifiable and consensual, or at least comprehensible?
I just threw up in my mouth a little. Good thing I left the Church decades ago, otherwise I might be tempted to the sin of violence against the first priest, monseigneur, or bishop I see.
‘Scuse me while I kiss this guy!
It was all caused by a misheard lyric.
A sure sign that you are being handed bullshit by authority is when that authority says, despite the power that comes with the position, that they are not culpable for errors within the system over which they preside. Same old game: all the power, none of the responsibility.
$1.8 million dollars to protect their power instead of using those funds to do the work their religious figure instructed them to do? Sadducees.
“Blame it on the Stones, blame it on the Stones, you’ll feel so much better knowing you don’t stand alone, join the accusations, save the leading nations, get if off your shoulders, blame it on the Stones.” –Kris Kristofferson
Don’t forget the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
But you nailed it. Sexual abuse is inherent in authoritarian religious structures. And I have seen several examples of “lone wolf” type gurus and preachers of various sorts, unaffiliated with a big brand name, getting busted for various kinds of sexually abusive behavior.
Men and women who claim to speak for a deity are liars. Once they are accepted as individuals who control the gates of heaven and hell and can speak for a god or gods, they have attained the most powerful tool of psychological coercion in existence. Of course, whenever possible, they obtain actual physical power, such as in the Irish slave laundries run by nuns and the numerous orphanages and boy’s schools that have been exposed worldwide as slave and rape farms.
Given the opportunity, the Bishops, Falwells, Robertsons, Mormons, Muslims, Baptists and other fanatics will create again, a world where reports of religious abuse are simply not tolerated. Those conditions occur worldwide, wherever the god shouters have the power to make it so.
catlicker bishops? fuck those fucking fuckers and the pope they rode in on.
never believe anything until it has been officially denied.
Y’know, if they’d said that–since sexual mores changed a lot then–more priests started having consensual relationships with other adults, it would be a pretty reasonable claim (I’d believe it, for one), and not even reflect too badly on the priests.
But this is the sort of thing you’d expect from men who are so sexophobic that they honest-to-Ned can’t see the moral difference between two grownups getting together on their own volition and raping a minor.
And they want to make the former Pope a Saint! Patron saint of Pedophilia???
I concur and why not just finish the whole separation of church from state in the US once and for all with: 1) a secular ethic based on basic, common human goodness, 2) marriage and divorce as a civil legal affair for all who want it?
