Going to need your help on this one, folks, as I’m a bit busy this afternoon. I will really try this time to populate this with some links later. Thanks.

US debt deal: Five golden rules “So what are the golden rules in getting the deal you want? And can any lessons be drawn from the deadlock in Washington? Two experts give their views.”
Like I’ve said, I’d love to play poker with Obama.
Telex to help defeat web censors “Developed by US computer scientists the software, called Telex, hides data from banned websites inside traffic from sites deemed safe.
The software draws on well-known encryption techniques to conceal data making it hard to decipher.
So far, Telex is only a prototype but in tests it has been able to defeat Chinese web filters.”
Download some malware, go to prison:
Another 14 arrests of these “suspected Anonymous members” today.
Here’s a fun interactive from the Guardian re Rupert:
How Twitter tracked the MPs’ questions – and the pie
David seemed to want to know if we’d provide some material! Hahahahaha.
FBI: Pakistani spy agency secretly lobbied U.S. lawmakers
“Republicans and Democrats were the recipients of about $2 million in lobbying dollars secretly funneled into a U.S. nonprofit by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, U.S. law enforcement officials said in court documents filed Tuesday.
. . .
“Recipients included the National Republican Senatorial Committee ($4,500), President Barack Obama ($250), the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee ($250), Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN) ($2,000), Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA) ($2,000) and others.
“Investigators said that lawmakers had no way of knowing the money was coming from Pakistan. The Pakistani embassy has denied knowledge of the arrangement.”

New Documents Cast Doubt on Federal Anthrax Case
“On July 15, however, Justice Department lawyers acknowledged in court papers that the sealed area in Ivins’ lab — the so-called hot suite — did not contain the equipment needed to turn liquid anthrax into the refined powder that floated through congressional buildings and post offices in the fall of 2001.”

L.A. County is seeing a spike in deputy-fraud allegations
“Watchdog agency says rise in financial crimes may be linked to overtime cuts, because many had become dependent on the extra income. In one case, a deputy torched his car and sought an insurance payout.”

OK. I did my part to help out.
Moments ago former Demand Progress Executive Director Aaron Swartz was indicted by the US government. As best as we can tell, he is being charged with allegedly downloading too many journal articles from the Web. The government contends that downloading so many journal articles constitutes felony computer hacking and should be punished with time in prison. We disagree.
Will you click here to sign our petition of support for Aaron?
The charges are made all the more senseless by the fact that the alleged victim has settled any claims against Aaron, explained they’ve suffered no loss or damage, and asked the government not to prosecute.
James Jacobs, the Government Documents Librarian at Stanford University — where Aaron did undergraduate work — denounced the arrest: “Aaron’s prosecution undermines academic inquiry and democratic principles,” Jacobs said. “It’s incredible that the government would try to lock someone up for allegedly looking up articles at a library.”
lol
you are the legendary linkster!

Chile’s President Allende killed himself, experts say

Jane will be on Ed’s show tonight

Jane Hamsher, Founder of Firedoglake.com
She talked to Congressman Barney Frank, a crusader for cost-of-living increase, who said he will NOT vote for The Gang of Six deal (which includes a calculation that would decrease cost-of-living adjustments). She reported on the 2000 people saying no to cuts to Social Security or Medicare benefits… who visited over 40 Congressional offices to let them know if they vote for cuts they won’t get support in the next election. Now, she’ll talk to us about what comes next.
Re Fatster (#5)
Whenever I read about these foreign agent cases, I think of Dennis Ross:
Dennis Ross: Current National Security Council staff member and Senior Director / Special Assistant to the President for the Middle East, the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, Pakistan and South Asia.
Dennis Ross: Current chair of the Jerusalem-based think tank, the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute (JPPPI)
JPPPI: Funded and founded by the Jewish Agency in 2002.
Jewish Agency: Funded and founded by the Government of Israel.
Tell me there is not a double standard here.
Finally broke down and joined FDL after watching Jane give Big Ed grief about Ed saying the progressives were like the tea party except on opposites sides as in both intractable. A yea Ed except one side is reasonable in analysis while other side are nutjobs. Jane made Ed retract and say he was with the progressive wing in spite of our “unreasonableness”. Classic. Actually been going to FDL first each day and it has way surpassed Daily Koz and Nation as my preferred news source. Great job to all here who make it work
With a likely transition of power in Venezuela, it’s time for a front-page story in the NYT saying Venezuela would make an “Eastern European pencil-pusher chortle.” Included is a cropped photo gallery showing various people standing in line in what we are told are “slums.”
The piece, entitled “As Life Passes by, Venezuelans Are Always Standing in Line to Watch” quotes two anti-Chavez publications (without identifying them as such) as well as a 70 year old travel guide to describe how bad things are.
Chavez has said that the so-called independent media is his worst enemy. He’s right.
Thnx, bmull. Wow.
Justice Department Retracts Court Filings That Undercut FBI’s Anthrax Case
“But the unusual seven-page correction, filed in federal court in Florida, does not erase testimony from government scientists who challenged the FBI’s finding that the late Bruce Ivins was the perpetrator.”

Good Lord, the DOJ under Holder has become a complete laughingstock. Do they have a single competent person working there? Of course, the FBI doesn’t look any better. I was arguing in favor of a cover-up at EW’s place earlier, but now we may be back to staggering, jaw dropping, incompetence. Oh goody, just what we need ; )
Add that to what happened in the Clemen’s case and it’s hard to believe that Holder is running any sort of (sic)see-worthy ship.
Latin American economies are supposed to be doing reasonably well, I just read, employment increasing, mostly with left leaning governments that are independent of USA.
got to fight that.
