Incredibly, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is launching a half-million dollar ad buy into New York City with one weekend to go until a special House election in NY-09, the seat once held by Anthony Weiner.
According to buy information obtained by Hotline On Call, the DCCC has made a $483,500 TV ad buy in the district, starting tomorrow through Monday. The broadcast TV buy will not air on September 11, the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The Democratic super PAC House Majority PAC has also bought advertising time in the district as well.
The fight to succeed disgraced former Rep. Anthony Weiner has turned into a neck and neck race in the Brooklyn and Queens district. Democratic Assemblyman David Weprin went up on air yesterday with a $270,000 buy on New York City broadcast television, as polls have shown Republican Bob Turner closing in, despite the district’s 133,000 Democratic voter registration edge.
You can see the ad here. It plays off Bob Turner’s recent comment that “I never met a loophole I didn’t like.” Half a million in what amounts to four days is a lot of coin. The election is on September 13.
I always thought, and in a way I continue to think, that Weprin will win this race. It’s true that Weprin had his share of gaffes, but only Republican polls have shown the race closer than six points. The overblown concern is reminiscent of the concern over Janice Hahn in CA-36, and in the end she won comfortably. However, in that race, the DCCC never jumped in. And they have to be in possession of some polling that tells them they need to raise Turner’s negatives. A SuperPAC associated with House Democrats is chipping in an additional $100,000. And I’ve been getting fundraising appeals from Democratic leaders all day.
Understand that this has an impact on not one, but two elections. There’s another special election in NV-02 on September 13, and a few weeks ago one PPP poll showed that a one-point race between Republican Mark Amodei and Democrat Kate Marshall. But the DCCC never budged, never sent resources, and Amodei has buried Marshall with ad spending. So the D-Trip concedes that race, probably because they were conserving funds for NY-09, which by all rights should have been a sleepy blowout.
That half a million dollars would have come in very handy next year, when Democrats make a push to take back the House, no? Instead, it’s being chewed up in the expensive New York City media market to protect a bad candidate whose district will probably get chopped up in redistricting anyway. This is a really bad scenario, and it’s largely because of the national malaise and weak numbers for the President and Democrats. Republican numbers aren’t better, but in a seat like NY-09, the Democrats are seen as the incumbents. And the nation is in an anti-incumbent mood.

For the most part Weprin’s “gaffes” weren’t really gaffes so much as failure to rise to level of bigotry that is prevalent in his district.
Why doesn’t someone ask Wasserman “what’s up,doc?”

Thanks DD. Appears more ineptitude on the part of the national Democratic Party. THAT…is a problem.
Let me guess the Dems ran a Blue dog candidate and now if they lose they will argue that their handpicked candidate was a bad campaigner.
When the Dems lose seats its never about public disappointment with Obama. Its never about Blue Dog Dem policy ideas being as popular as cold lumpy oatmeal on a winter morning.
What do local Dems on the ground have to say about the campaign? I know nothing of this district. Its hard to weigh in without more background.
Why is David Weprin a bad candidate? I know nothing about Weprin. I’ve gotten two emails from Kirsten Gillibrand stumping for contributions, but I haven’t sent anything. I don’t trust politicians, any of them, enough to send money on their say-so.
I hate any kind of oatmeal. Yuck!
Just out of curiosity, what sort of a candidate is Kate Marshall? Nobody’s asking me to send money to her campaign–which might mean she’s a keeper.
Oatmeal cookies with raisins are the only oatmeal I like
In WSJ poll earlier this week, somewhat over half said they would throw out every member of congress including their own.
Would the Dems need to spend so much money on races if they just elected candidates who openly campaigned on government should create good paying jobs?
Amazing did they just wake up to the fact that there was an election going on?
How do they even win an election and yes send no money to this clown outfit called dccc or any other friend of theirs.
Tea Baggers are just over 20% they want to keep their Reps so that means the rest are low information voters who are still undecided.
I think the Left wants real Lefties and is more than willing to axe Obama and the Dems there are so few Lefties worth voting for at all these days.
I’m left but I would support a real democrate
As for me, I don’t see why the U.S. needs a congress at all. I’d just dismiss every single one. We’re already run by a dictator. Might as well save those other salaries in the Osterity drive.
David you need to start calling them what they are and end this dem vs repub illusion. They are Corporate Puppet (R) and (D)
I thin we should start calling the super committee what it is too. thoughts anyone. fascist committee, the politberue (sp)
None of this would have been necessary had not the Democratic Party joined in the media and Republican manufactured controversy over Rep. Weiner sending illicit photographs of himself.
The manner in which Democrats habitually ostracize members of their own party, including the rare articulately combative member like Weiner, is another reason to not support said party.
Local Dems think that Weiner should not have resigned but the stupid party pressured him to, so now we’re left with this hack who will probably lose, but who cares, it’s not like he was going to stop the wars or do anything other than what Boss Schumer says to do for his hedge fund donors.
Turner got a nice intro to listeners to WNYC on the Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC. Lehrer tends to treat Republicans on his show rather tenderly and seldom allows callers to ask questions (most listeners are not big R voters and many are very well versed on issues). Turner was painful to listen to. He’d run against Weiner, and I’d expected he would be well versed on the issues, but he mostly just had his Tea Party-esque talking points, while saying he had nothing to do with the TP.
When I listened to Weprin, I was disappointed as he didn’t seem all that up on demography for the district, but I didn’t hear the whole segment.
Former Mayor Koch came out early for Turner, based on his belief this Christian Republican is stronger on support for Israel than an Orthodox Jew, Weprin. Koch can be quite the joker and loves being a fly in the oinment to Dems, it seems to me.
In a quick google, it appears most of the local newspapers are strongly endorsing Weprin.
The Dem leadership should have left Weiner in the seat. He could have been redistricted out or they could have let his constituents vote him out; however, I think they just did not want the continual jokes on late night TV. Weiner was well known, lived near the big broadcasters, and the MCMers (members of the Mainstream Corporate Media) would not have let go of the puns.
But I’m in NJ, so whadda I know?
Interesting read n thanks.
I wonder what media that money is going to, tv antenna or cable, both, radio?
N then I wonder what the cost is for a :30 second spot on antenna tv in NYC, on cable, on radio . . .
Cuz I’d guess it’s well over $60 per :30 for antenna tv . . . but I doln’t know.
Any pups know about media buy costs in The Big Apple?
Yer askin us to ask the wolf in sheeps cloth to tell us something besides DNC Party talking points?
I guess, I shoulda intuited the snark tag . .

Heh, if one don’t analyze the individual issues that sentiment is based, I’d say GOOD ON THE DIRTY UNWASHED MASSES!
Sadly, that stat is likely well populated with greed, avarice, bigotry, misogyny, homophobia, class warfare n all the other foibles of this human species.
Still, I’m grinnin.
Look out PTB, tide’s a rollin the more you stomp on us.
Yep, unitary ownership/leadership posing as a democracy.
See First Roman Emperor.
N so shall we go, too, only faster.

Dude got too sexy, not kewl in any manner for our erecteds.
He got what he deserved, he failed to conduct himself properly in the position his voters elected him.
That’s not negotiable.
Neither is the dem party protecting someone who fails on this principle.
It’s just not acceptable. N bad behavior is not negotiable.
Hell, I must be crazy. I’ll bet it’s over $600 per 30 sec spot on antenna tv . . or more . . . maybe easily double that. My bad.
When given a choice of voting for a faux Republican and a real Republican the electorate will always vote for the real thing. You’d think the Dems would have learned that by now but then they don’t really care anymore. It’s all one big party anyway.
It could be worse. At least Steve Israel isn’t coaching your local NFL team.
Weprin is a typical NYC political hack with little in the way of ability. However, the district is so strongly Democratic that he should win,I read that he had a 6 point lead in one poll.
I can support that. And if elected………
dday – you know this stuff better than I do, BUT
IF your little kleptocracy of sell out scum buddies needs a cash boost, you take care of the campaign CON$ultant scum buddies up in NYC who get to siphon their 4? 14% off the ad and media buys!
IF you spend 1/2 a million in Nevada, how the hell can you take care of your right up the road beltway buddies ??
rmm.
Here’s how bad the Turner campaign is: they keep calling me (robo; I never pick up) and leaving me messages that this is the most important election EVA. Then they have Ed Koch call me (I actually like Ed) and whine like a son-of-a-bitch about what an idiot Weprin is.
Here’s how bad the Weprin campaign is: I actually mistakenly picked up a live call from them and they asked if I was gonna vote for Weprin. I said that I’m not sure but most likely I’ll write in Weiner’s name. That’s right, I am sooooooo pissed that somebody else decided that I cannot choose my own congressperson that I’m probably gonna do that. The Weprin guy started yelling at me about what a pervert Weiner is. Yeah – that’s gonna get an undecided voter over to your side!!
Morons all.
