The news that the Obama Administration deported 400,000 undocumented immigrants in the last fiscal year, setting another record, did not come as welcome news to immigration advocates:
The Obama administration might be touting the nearly 400,000 deportations of illegal immigrants last year as evidence that the White House is tough on enforcement and dedicated to reform, but don’t try to convince Rep. Luis Gutierrez.
The Illinois Democrat – perhaps the most vocal immigrant-rights advocate on Capitol Hill – said Tuesday that the record-breaking figure is “nothing to be proud of,” but instead represents “a symptom of our decades-long neglect in fixing the immigration system.”
“We are deporting hundreds of thousands of people who came to the country to work, raise families, contribute to the economy, and want nothing more than to be allowed to live and work here legally,” Gutierrez said in a statement. “Setting a record for deportations and incurring the huge expense of sending so many people away is nothing to be proud of as a country.”
Gutierrez has said to me that the Administration feels that 400,000 deportations comprises something of a quota system, to satisfy a series of contracts to carry out the deportations, authorized by Congress. To tamp down the anger about this in immigrant neighborhoods, the White House claims a focus on criminals, though their definition of criminal activity is so broad, including things like parking tickets or driving without a license, that it’s worth looking at the numbers with suspicion. Indeed, CBS reports that “Officials could not immediately say how many of those crimes related just to previous immigration violations.”
It’s axiomatic that this emphasis on deportation, mostly done through the flawed Secure Communities program, mostly affects Latinos. But now there’s an actual study showing this. And according to the report from the University of California, Berkeley law school and the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York:
The report also found that about a third of around 226,000 immigrants who have been deported under the program, known as Secure Communities, had spouses or children who were United States citizens, suggesting a broad impact from those removals on Americans in Latino communities.
The studies find 93% of all those dealt with via Secure Communities are Latinos, despite being only 2/3 of all immigrants. The report also found a small number of immigrants held for no discernible reason, including hundreds of American citizens.
This is why governors across the country have tried to drop Secure Communities, created during the Bush Administraion, and why it led to such outrage earlier this year. Since then, the Administration ordered a deportation review to ensure that only those convicted of serious crimes go through the deportation system. There’s not much data on that shift, which has only been in place for two months, in this report. But Adam Serwer does see some signs.
So here’s an interesting wrinkle in the record deportation numbers the Obama administration announced Tuesday. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement stats show that the administration had 164,245 criminal removals through July 31st. The total number of criminal removals for fiscal year 2011 was 216,698, which means that ICE had 52,353 criminal removals in August and September. That means that nearly a quarter of the total criminal removals for 2011 happened in the last two months.
Why does that matter? If the numbers are correct, then the numbers show that the Obama administration was serious when it announced in August that it would focus immigration enforcement resources on unauthorized immigrants it believes pose a threat to public safety.
There’s still the issue of what is defined as “criminal” under the plan. And there’s supposed to be a full review – the revving up of criminal removals in August and September doesn’t suggest that has taken place. As Gutierrez said, “The announcement cannot be merely a pacifier for those of us crying out for justice and compassion; it must actually stop the deportation of those with deep roots in our country like long-term residents, DREAM Act students, military families, and immediate family of U.S. citizens.” We still don’t really know the outcome, though this sign could be better news.

Remember when candidate obama railed against bush’s secure communities, but now…………
Obama appears not to realize that 50 years ago it would have been HIM in a jail cell awaiting deportation.
In this election, it appears that anything positive said or done for immigrants or anybody who looks like a immigrant will be considered a net negative.
Boxturtle (And I wonder how long it will be before Texas comes up with a shoot on sight rule for desert walkers)
partisan democrats are giddy about the new improved obama (aka, campaign obama)
of course, they don’t care what obama actually does, only that he sounds better
and that’s why the democratic party is an abject failure
Any bets the WH will increase and brag about increasing those numbers once the Presidential election season starts? After all O’s strategy is to win over White Voters trusting that the GOP will scare Hispanic and Lefty voters in general into voting for him.
O thinks if I take a position to the right of Reagan on any issue the GOP will then take a position to the right of me on that issue this will make me seem Moderate and get me the Moderate Crazy vote leaving the GOP with only the full on Crazy vote.
I will grant you from a Hispanic and Lefty view this looks like betrayal and it has lost Obama tons of Dem seats but just like Bush O can’t ever admit a mistake instead he doubles his bet when he is losing.
Somehow we elected a smarter version of George Bush smarter but with all the same character flaws.
This is just another bullshit attempt to appease the right. Which, of course, will not work.
That was a COMPLETELY different person from President Obama.
Boxturtle (President Obama SAYS the same things, but acts a bit differently)
Giddy about what may I ask?
If the numbers are correct, then the numbers show that the Obama administration was serious when it announced in August that it would focus immigration enforcement resources on unauthorized immigrants it believes pose a threat to public safety.
Oh Holy Hell! The administration is enforcing the nation’s laws and deporting illegals who have committed crimes????? (Doesn’t being an illegal alien mean you have committed a crime anyway? But I digress).
Happy (yeah, it was much better when we just let criminals roam the streets)
They’ll have to be careful. Look for third parties unconnected with the WH to talk it up in the South and West, while Obama promises the DREAM act in the rest of the country.
Boxturtle (And look for the GOPers to use “Jobs for prisoners” as an example of GOP success)
Gutierrez has said to me that the Administration feels that 400,000 deportations comprises something of a quota system, to satisfy a series of contracts to carry out the deportations,
Contracts to Private Prisons? Contracts that justify picking up and almost deporting legal Hispanics just based on skin color? Illegal Immigrants come in all colors I don’t see O sending INS to Irish and Polish neighborhoods in Chicago and yes we have plenty of illegals in those neighborhoods.
There are also Black and White Mexicans too but they pass as real Americans. O is targeting the Brown.
In other act of O humanitarianism, in O’s first 33 months as prez he has killed double the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan than W did in his entire 8 years.
giddy about the “warrior for the working class”
obama is speechifying , his poll numbers have moved up, and the partisan deems think ows will save obama
go to plum line, talking points and dkos and you’ll see what i mean
Here’s a quota system for you:
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of illegal aliens should immediately be adjudicated and deported from this great country of ours.
I don’t care if they walked, drove, swam, sky-dived, or tunneled their way into the US. I don’t care if they have US Citizen spouses, children, or goats. If they are here illegally, they are committing a crime and should go back home immediately.
ONE
HUNDRED
PERCENT
“The studies find that 93% of all those dealt with by Secure Communities are Latinos, despite being only 2/3 of all immigrants.”
Not really a surprising statistic if you’re not distinguishing between legal and illegal immigrants. What percent of all illegal immigrants are Latino?
The border states populations all grew during the last ten years much of this growth was illegal immigrants their crime rate per person went down. So if Crime is your big concern lets get rid of the real Americans. Illegals are getting stopped for traffic tickets and getting deported.
If your concern is illegals taking jobs then go work on a farm in Alabama crops are rotting in the fields also if Obama were to jail CEO’s of Wallmart and McDonalds both of whom have in the past been finned for hiring illegals then I would think O was being fair in this policy but he is not doing that is he?
Obama’s political strategy since he was elected has been to play defense. This is another example. Like all elected democrats for as long as most of us can remember, he seems to be terrified of attacks by the right on ground chosen by the right. So no closing of Guantanamo, no real shut-down of the occupation of Iraq, no shut-down of the war in Afghanistan, and expansion of the war on anyone who says bad things about the US and has the misfortune to be a Muslim, arresting and deporting illegal immigrants. And of course, bailing out banks.
I think this is why the OWS is so unsettling to him. He only knows how to play defense against the Right. The OWS is screwing up the game plan.
A friend of mine once figured out that if you started boarding them on buses, commandeering the entire fleet in this country, it would take about a decade to deport them, or estimates to that effect.
Do

You actually know some? I haven’t seen or felt any giddiness. A little hope against hope maybe, but nothing more. He’s going to find it hard to stir up the troops when the troops have mostly defected.
Are you going to go pick the fruits and veggies that are withering and dying in Alabama?
O has been reading his Reagan whats next O has a third party leak a story to the Times about an imaginary illegal getting welfare checks and driving a Caddy eating steaks?
as i said, check out the mainstream dem blogs like dk, tpm and pl
hope springs eternal, it seems, though i’d say it’s self-delusion springing eternal
Frontline did a program on this. There’s a lot of abuse going on in the detention centers plus none of the people picked up are allowed an attorney.
I can’t let moronic liars say stuff unchecked if we ignore him then the press who looks to us for story ides might think if we don’t answer back that we ignore him/her/it because we can’t answer it’s questions.
Nice got a link?
Can’t tell if troll or just stupid.
Assume we do this. Assuming we could round them all up (we can’t) and assuming we could commendeer every bus in that nation (we can’t) and assuming that Mexico would simply let us unload across the border (they wouldn’t) in about 12 years you would have deported all the illegals. Assuming thee were no legal challenges. Assuming that no new illegals cross the border during that time.
Granting all the above, who pays for it? And who pays for the GDP hit when all the work currently being done by illegals stops?
Boxturtle (Reality calling. Please pick up the brown courtesy phone)
You owe me a drink.
The first part is quoted from the article here/above. The second part is a question which I don’t know the answer. Was hoping someone here would have answer.
Texas has a new law on the books as of Sep. 1.
Illegal immigrants who once couldn’t wait to sneak into the United States are now clamoring to get tossed out as quickly as possible.
“I’m writing in hopes that you’ll consider me for deportation,” Rosales’ letter states.
http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/state&id=8386927
And will you raise taxes to pay for deporting them? Will you take the jobs they are not doing? at the same pay?
I am all for raising the pay on the shit jobs illegals do but O the Dems and GOP are not on board with that.
Will you support putting in jail any CEO who hires illegals all it takes is a phone call to Social Security to confirm if an illegals SS number is real funny how many illegals are hired by CEO’s who don’t make that call.
By keeping immigrants illegal we force them to take lower pay and lower our own wages as a result.
Raise wages regardless of legal status and why would an employer hire illegals over English speaking legal Americans.
Cracking down on illegals is a wedge issue America’s right tried to blame illegals for the bad economy just like Germany blamed the Jews for its bad economy. Notice years before the banking crisis Lou Dobbs stopped doing a business show on CNN and did a hate the immigrants everyday show. If anything the powers that be knew the economy was going to go down and decided to create a scapegoat ahead of time.
Then let’s start now and build more buses as well. It could really spur the economy at the same time.
GREAT IDEA!
*sigh* I can only type so fast. Boss keeps coming by and wanting me to work.
Whatcha drinking?
Boxturtle (We got a special today on fresh troll blood)
Green tea, thank you very much.
This and many other things this president has done is dispicable to me. Obama did these things, not because he fundamentally believes in them, but because he mistakenly thought it would buy him some political capital or favor with the right. This idiotic man thought that if only showed the right he could be as right wing as they could be, maybe then he would convince them to “come to the table of brotherhood”. How stupid and naive was this. When the first thing that comes of the Senate Minority Leader’s mouth, Mitch McConnell, is his only goal is to defeat you, you might want to take notice of that.
Yet this man thought that if he showed the right he could be tough on enforcement by increasing deportations and sending national guard troops to the border, they just might be willing to do a comprehensive immigration bill. Damn, I’d love to be in a poker game with Obama, I’d clean his clock. Any fool with half a brain could see the right hates immigrants, and only wants to tear this man down, no matter the cost, yet he, even until this day, still thinks they’ll do the right thing on immigration. HE’S WRONG YET AGAIN!!!!!
PRESIDENT OBAMA, THERE ARE NO MORE MODERATE, SENSIBLE REPUBLICANS. HAVE YOU BEEN WATCHING THE GOP DEBATES!
Is it really a crime to take a job nobody else will do at those wages and at that much danger Farm Workers have horrible lifespans, infant mortality rates etc I blame the farm chemicals.
Rather than saying we should pay them more and make the jobs safer so Americans will want to do the jobs too we would prefer crops rot in the fields?
O’s and Alabama, AZ’s etc policy seems criminal in its neglect of illegals and stupid because it also hurts the economy.
All people legal or illegal need the protection of the law in wages and workplace safety the law can’t just apply in one direction meaning illegals get arrested for breaking the law but have no legal workplace safety or wages protection.
By ignoring our fellow men we lower our own wages and workplace safety Hispanic Immigrants with no Healthcare live longer than Whites with Healthcare unless we are farm workers this raises the question of just how bad are the chemicals we put in the food?
By ignoring the canary in the coal mine we risk ourselves.
O went to White Schools sometimes, there are always some minority kids who will ditch their own to try and fit in with the cool white kids and they often make their bones by dissing the other minority kids because the Whites say your different than they are.
I have seen this mentality before it does not say much about O’s character.
We have a troll who wants to raise taxes to deport all illegals.
.
We have a troll unwilling to do the jobs the illegals did before we deported them.
We have a troll who is so far silent on jailing CEO’s who hire illegals.
In conclusion we have a troll who has an workable plan that he/she/it is unwilling to pay for to create jobs he/she/it is unwilling to do but he/she/it seems to think CEO’s who hire illegals should not be held accountable for.
I think we got a GOP think tank *cough* brain here today. :)
Ask him why the laws against bank fraud aren’t being enforced. Why are some laws more enforceable than others? Oh wait. I know. Some laws are just for ‘little people.’
You seem to be someone who will sacrifice liberty and security all for a cheap smoothie.
At some price, someone will. That’s the free market at work, pal. I don’t care if it means $5 tomatoes. At least our borders will be secure and we will be employing AMERICANS!!!
Actually, GDP will go up. The wages to pay the AMERICANS picking the fruit will have to go up – so be it – meaning wage levels and employment will soar. I think that’s a good thing, don’t you?
Don’t tell me you would worry about inflation. This same site talks allt he time about how the Fed pumping out more and more money has not done a damn thing to spur inflation, so why would paying people a living wage cause it to go up. Ar are you against a living wage and maybe a higher minimum wage for farm workers?
Which is it? Which side of your mouth will you speak out of today?
Happy (sometimes the turtle speaks but makes little sense)
No, I don’t expect anything to be cheap but those farmers are going to go bankrupt if their crops are not harvested. Farmers live pretty much on the edge as it is, so they will be finished if they have no income. And didn’t you read the article yesterday that they had tried to hire Americans in Alabama and they couldn’t or wouldn’t do the work?
No, we have a CITIZEN here who:
1. Is in favor of enforcing our laws – including jailing CEOs and business owners who knowingly violate employment and immigration laws
2. Will be HAPPY to pay more taxes to secure our borders and increase our national security
3. Has a great job as is, and is not interested in picking fruit any more than I am interested in digging ditches. But I’ll be happy to pay higher prices so that companies can hire AMERICANS to do those jobs.
So you want me to feel sorry for farmers (in any other context, you would be hating on small businessmen – raise their taxes, etc. – so why the change in tune?) who have been breaking the law until now?
Really?
Now if you will excuse me, I really have to go back to oppressing the masses. I have some water to pollute, babies to abort, and a hedge fund to run.
Ta ta
Did you “tool” by in your Porche or your Aston Martin, today, to deliver this load of wiz-dumb, damnhappytoshare?
For such a gung-ho, red-blooded, American, you certainly set set some lousy rich-guy examples.
BTW, if your Porche “does” stick-shift your Aston, then who will adopt the resulting little Portions (they would be German-Brit mongrels, of course)?
Exactly how long ago did your ancestors migrate here? Unless you can claim native blood? When do YOU think the cut-off “point” should be? Bearing in mind that the Hispanic people have been in the Americas for quite a long time, naturally.
Just some friendly, curious questions, little buddy.
D-dub, it’s an AMG, not an Aston Martin. Though I DO fancy the DB9.
My ancestors came to this country through legal means, many generations ago. I don’t begrudge immigrants any opportunity to join the American family, but they should come here legally. Don’t forget (you seem to be monitoring my posts – creepy) that I make a TON of money placing H1 visa workers and permanenet residents in IT contract positions. So I am all for immigration, just legally.
Thanks, buddy.
First let me say that I have been guilty of this too but we have got to stop feed these assholes. He can go away now certain that he’s scored some points against those stupid DFH’s. He can go back to Redstate or Stormwatch or what ever cess pool of hate that he crawled out of and claim victory over use Libruls.
We have got to stop that. We know why they are here. Just talk around them. They don’t matter and their assinine assertions are irrelevent.
Maybe prices will actually go down without the illegal immigrants.
http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20111002/BUSINESS/110939928/1036/?p=all&tc=pgall
Ah … Mercedes …?
BTW, did you ancestors come before there were restrictions?
Or later on?
Merely curiosity, happy.
(Not monitoring, just happening upon … and, I knew you couldn’t resist the chance to exchange some words with one of your favorites on FDL.)
And, you are most entirely welcome, little buddy.
I can’t stand it. Sometimes I think the only thing I hate more than the thought of one of the GOP clowns in the White House, is being so pissed at Obama for screwing us.
Then I see what so few people did with the courage and inspiration to begin the OWS movement. And I begin to wonder:
What is the one thing that would really threaten Obama to straighten out? A massive movement among Democrats to stay home on election day if he continues to shove shit in our faces. It’s not like we are asking for more than he promised.
And so far, he shows no clue in any real understanding of the OWS movement! That is so unbelievable. He NEEDS a kick where he will pay attention.
As an American citizen–not by choice but because my parents happened to fuck here (funny how that legality happens)–I would happily prefer to be neighbors with any undocumented immigrant over the likes of bigoted, ill-informed, self-destructive “citizens” like yourself. Any day of the week. It is precisely this sort of bigotry and ignorance that makes the US such a god-awful stupid, boring place to live. Undocumented immigrants improve my quality of life. You and your ilk decrease it.
Yes, German engineering. Das great.
I am not sure exactly what restrictions they came in under. But what’s your point? My position on obeying the law is in no way impacted by my ancestors’ guilt or innocence on the subject of immigration. If you had a murderer in your family would you be feel somehow that you could not support homicide laws?
Not to inject more race into this, but many people complained that ending slavery would cause prices to go up because of lack of free labor.
Didn’t happen.
Just curiosity.
The early immigrants, like most of my ancestors, mostly in 1600s, just kind of called the place their own, the earliest ones, of my ancestors, were here to greet them, and the later ones, my ancestors, the males, were impressed into the Civil War …
I simply wondered if your family had experienced a history of prejudice or mistreatment?
Just questions about “perspective”, so you needn’t be afraid or become defensive.
You’ve made your position, on any number of things, quite clear, rest assured.
The Rule of Law, I suspect you would agree, should apply, equally, to everyone whatever their “station” or “standing”, and, further, I would hope you might agree that, sometimes, “the law” has less to do with justice than with protecting the status quo? For example, “the peculiar institution”, comes to mind … “Slavery”, the “right” under law of one person to own another.
Just curious, happy, just curious.
Your ideas and opinions are now open to abuse, ridicule and psychoanalysis. Despite the fact that many millions of Americans agree with you completely, your thoughts will not be countenanced here. Open borders means we are not a country. No country on earth, including the most liberal and enlightened, allows undocumented people to freely come and go. There are really good reasons for this, some of them economic, and some security related. The thought that someone can sneak into a country, work off the books, send their money home; and enjoy free medical care, education and food stamps provided by taxpayers doesn’t seem to bother some people at all.
I have a question: If we don’t build a fence and patrol the border, and we don’t deport people who are here illegally, then how do we combat and end illegal immigration?
The answer is: we don’t. And that’s just how both parties like it. Dems love it because Latinos who become citizens (often domestic-born children of illegals) tend to vote Dem. R’s love it because it’s cheap labor for the ag and service industries, plus it pulls down wages in many other blue collar fields. (Construction being a prime example.)
So, what we have is lip service by the Dem party, and the feeling of all the bleeding heart types that America has the responsibility to open its borders to everyone who wants to live here. We have the resources to provide housing, education, food, medicine, open space, public safety, etc., to absolutely all 7 billion people in the world. Of course, this is ludicrous, but to be in favor of eliminating illegal immigration and illegal immigrants is to be branded racist, rather than rational.
“The thought that someone can sneak into a country, work off the books, send their money home; and enjoy free medical care, education and food stamps provided by taxpayers doesn’t seem to bother some people at all.”
Sounds like you’ve described every corporation with an offshore tax haven. What is it that causes some people to defend these actions when they are committed by folks with power and money and at the same time attack those with the least amount of power and money in the equation? Well, them bosses do need all the help they can get from regular folks.
If there is anything so susceptible to ridicule it is thoughtless bigotry and willful ignorance, like claiming that undocumented immigrants “enjoy free medical care.” From where did you hear this, Lou Dobbs? In what parallel universe does this take place? If you look at the economic data, you find that undocumented immigrants pay for what little public services they receive just like any other citizen: through the taxes they pay (income, sin, property, sales, etc). In fact, undocumented immigrants pay much more in taxes than they get back in services, with the greatest disparity in the states that have the highest numbers of immigrants. But fear, identity narratives and deference to authority frequently trump facts.
